How protective Legolas is of Gimli! I liked this, but Gimli wants to make things right for both of them concerning legolas' family. I'm curious about this paper . Please, update soon. Bye.

It was a nice chapter. Even knowing the elves are the wisest I think it was nice, very nice, to have Gimli speaking to Legolas like that. And the fury of Legolas' brother in the end... about washing the floor with blood was very funny!

I've always liked Tolkien's fate for the Wood-Elves - in POME, they never leave Middle-earth at all and simply fade into the forest, and I like to think that Thranduil remained with them. It seems to me that this was the fate meant for Legolas, and the cry of the gulls is symbolic of the ties he has made to mortals. He can no longer find peace in Middle-earth because his immortality has become more a curse than a blessing. I take his relationship with Gimli to be virtually canonical, and I rather think that one reason Thranduil allowed him to settle in Ithilien was that he knew he was going to lose his son. It's a bit like Melian looking at her daughter and seeing her mortality. By allowing Legolas to go to Ithilien, Thranduil shields himself from the grief that will force Legolas to leave Middle-earth. I'm nure ure if this is quite the reaction Legolas expected from his family.

"This was not how disagreements were settled among dwarves but he had to admit, it was quieter." - I had to laugh at the picture this brought to mind!

I've always wondered how much Mithrandir might have had to do with the decision to send Legolas with the Fellowship. Externally, we know that Tolkien only settled upon a son of Thranduil because he would have been going that way, anyway. I'dI'd rather think that the right elf was chosen, perhaps destined to be the representative of the elves in the final confrontation with Sauron.

I agree completely with your explanation of the roots of Legolas and Gimli's friendship. I've thought before that Balin's death and Gimli's reaction had a strong effect on Legolas, and perhaps the's 's fear in the face of the Balrog had the same effect on Gimli - they came to see one another with sympathy, rather than as elf and dwarf. It also seems to me that Legolas would be carrying a fairly heavy burden of grief for Mithrandir. He most likely knew him er ter than any of the Fellowship.

Gimli's observations of King Thranduil give an interesting viewpoint of the meeting and of the family's relationships. I especially liked the distinction between Thranduil's role as King as as father.

this is one of my favorite chapters!

"I am your shield brother. That gives me the privilege and obligation to defend you both in battle and should any disagreement arise between you and my family, it is my right to stand with you. If they discern that, then there will no hurt feelings should such a situation take place. You are my lover and I want my privileges as such to be known and the exclusiveness of the bond accepted. Do dwarves have the same views?"

Gimli nodded and held the blue eyes with his own, their hands clasping together, "Though we might add that as myt frt friend, you have the right to know me better than anyone. To hear my secrets and to be certain that yours are safe with me. As my one love, you have the right to share my good times and the responsibility to be there in the bad times. Just as I have with you. I'm going to have to tell you more of my people and our culture soon."

these two paragraphs seem vow vows to me. the two have fully declared themselves in everyway to each other. i love this so much. perfect!
thank you for this great story!
    love, ellen
