I have been having a terrible time reviewing on this site. I will try this chapter again.

    Part 9

The poem was nice, very wood elfy. I liked the idea of Legolas being able to be in communion with the trees last thoughts. His fea reaching for what it can for comfort was an interesting idea. Of course it would be a tree, a dying tree to comfort his loss. The tree probably old and having led a long life and a wood elf so young to be traumatized by such unnatural loss.

Oh my yes let's lower those inhibitions so he can reveal all. As for his memories, we all seek independence and sometimes pay a painful price for it. He paid a very high price, learning more about himself than was comfortable to know at such a young age. He slowly became estranged from his family and people because of his desires. Now he is truly estranged from all these elves at Imladris. They can be split into two camps; those who have some interest in him and those who deride him. But neither camp really knows him just as at his home no one really knows him either. He had a good guardian. She protected him and kept his secrets for him. Galdor must do the same or he'll be truly alone with no one to watch his back. The consequences this time are much more serious.

Again you have made a very complex, multi-layered society. How do you keep doing that? So he is the product of an illicit union. I can't wait to see how that came about. He has been in a state of grief almost all of his short life. He has to live a lie to preserve his family, illicit though they are, his very life in the woodland realm is at stake here. Talk about being closeted. Yikes.

He has never seen his whole body. It must be a shock to see the tattoos in toto for the first time. He sees the full change with Calarlim gone from his life and Galdor in her place for now. And the gong rings for tea. Oh my the hobbits.

I was glad he had a nice little break with the hobbits and got something to eat. I think a stressed elf would need to eat and sleep even if they can go without when they need to. He is all cheered up now to continue the gauntlet that Galdor must have him run.

Yes, I always imagined Glorfindel to be superb myself. From the very first time I read about him. I realize that Legolas would have a different view of him but we can agree on the superb part. I thought Galdor took a nice approach to the "problem". He has no need to be shocked and that allowed Legolas to be more open and more accepting that something could be done. They did go around in a circle thought didn't they? It was interesting that Galdor senses that Legolas has already made the choice and it was inevitable. Just as inevitable that Galdor should be there for a purpose also. Also that Glorfindel stood up for Legolas, and would not let anyone belittle him, even stood beside him against his own troops. There must be something there also. But this banished thing must be looked into and also Glorfindel, how much does he want the wood elf. Just a nice treat or a long time banquet. I am sure we will find out.

    Part 8

So Galdor knows all about Erestor and Glorfindel. This has probably been a long running problem since this might come before Glorfindel died. Living forever might be a mixed blessing when it comes to some things.

The arboretum sounded lovely. No wonder the wood elf was captivated by it. I have a magnolia tree now and I was thrilled when it bloomed this year. They had a chimenea to warm them and poor Legolas needed it. He is upset he has to make a public declaration of his failing. Since the Imladris elves were very unkind to him he probably is right about how they will react to the news that the Greenwood elves failed to keep their hands on Gollum but let's face it the orcs were going to get him no matter what.

Ah According to Galdor Erestor is beyond reproach in all but one area, Glorfindel, his bete noir. And we get a gossipy servant who will be more than happy to denigrate poor Legolas. He just cannot catch a break can he?

That whole scene where he has a meltdown because of losing his Edwon Nana was so sad. I did like the phrase "it is a mother's right, whether first or second, to die for her child." I would. I would also kill if the circumstances were right. I used to be very pacifistic about killing but then I had a child. No one touches my child. So now he is on a fast track to fading. And his meltdown would be considered weak and immature. They have to be tough in Greenwood or they probably don't survive.

I was glad you gave some honour back to Oropher and his House. I like Oropher and don't like the way he is portrayed in a lot of stories. I like Thranduil also but I can accept him as a bad guy if the portrayal is honest and for a good story. Legolas is of the House of the Swallow and the House of Oropher (the Beech?). Gondolin is such a sad, sad story. Like much else that impacts the elves, the kinslaying, the march across the ice, Beleriand etc. Just goes on and on.

So sad for an elf to be cold, poisoned and cut to pieces. It was nice for him to think of the ashes of Gondolin as seeds that found a good sprouting place in the Greenwood. Tawar is very important to the silvan elves. I think The Way would be very easy for them to convert to.

At last Legolas feels better and realizes that this may have been ordained by the Valar.

    Ready for what?

You sneaky author you. And thanks for the card. It was much appreciated after a rough few days. This week will ne'er be forgot by me.

    Part #7

I really enjoyed the elder eldar sitting around with a wizard and comtemplating Cuthenin's future. So Glorfindel pledged and couldn't keep it. Well that won't work with our wood elf. He needs someone permanently in his life it seems. I love the layers to this story.

I loved Mithrandir being frustrated by the lack of candor and directness - pot - kettle - black. We get more explanation here. Glorfindel would be tied to Legolas and Legolas would be in the catbird seat. Well that sounds good to me. Things could be worse.

I really like the idea that they are all drawn to Imladris by different means and for various reasons. They aren't really in Kansas anymore. Life is in the process of changing and they will all have to hang on for it. Paradigm shift. And the differences in the cultures is fascinating. You have such a vivid imagination to come up with all these different points of view.

Galdor's discretion is commendable but maybe not very helpful here. The thought of a brother or sister being the soul keeper was interesting. They already have a part of his fea and would not need more than that link to keep him alive until the grief passed.

A Vision!! Now this makes Glorfindel realize that this is not a simple thing he wants to sign up for. This sounds like a very ancient sect and one that most elves have left behind. I like the Tawar thing myself. I liked seeing Glorfindel back pedaling like mad when he finally caught on to the seriousness of the situation. So they are all going to check the poor wood elf out to see how he is really faring. Not very well I am sorry to say.

So everyone hits the stage at about the same time. What a cacophonous time for everyone. I would be overwhelmed but Legolas behaved very properly, thus impressing Elrond. This was just a really great scene. We have the dwarves being very nice about Legolas, the men who have listened to gossip/slander and turning up their noses at the wood elf, the twins overwhelming the poor elf, and above all the elders watching him like a hawk for signs of fading and finding it all too easily.

Now we have Glorfindel and his concern. I think he is on the verge of being twitterpated and he is a little uneasy about it but Legolas seems to like it a lot. Such a nice Legolas/Glorfindel moment. Can't keep his hands off the wood elf and the elf thinks that is just fine. Glorfindel needs to find out if this is just lust or something a little more permanent. He certainly has surprised those who know him well. They know something is up.

Legolas is just so sweet in this story. Talking about a favorite food, showing the proper respect for Elrond and then Galdor since he seems to be a high mucky muck in Legolas' eyes. Also the difference in how they view the fight and how Legolas handled it. Very nice chapter.

Yes your tale is AU,so is every other fanfic written. I don't care how canon a writer tries to be it is all AU. PJ was AU also. We all should recognize and accept that. I am enjoying your hard work very much. Since I couldn't write a story if my life depended on it I have to look to those who can to fulfill my desire for more Tolkien inspired works.

    Part 6

I did like when Legolas retained his dignity surrounded by dwarves, clothes in tatters, barefoot and begrimed. Elves are like that. It is to his great credit he carries himself royally. How much the elves in Imladris miss the point of Legolas. He isn't trying to make himself the centre of attention at all. Not the first time or the second. They only feel that way because of Noldor arrogance. They would put on airs so they feel that Legolas is doing the same.

Ah. Ithil'wath. Things will heat up now. Legolas sets down his gear knowing he is in for it again. I thought that even if he loses he will gain, in understanding showed the difference between the two elves. Legolas has the better attitude.

Well the statement about his peers was a really low blow, but Legolas' comeback was great. Not only is Ithil'wath a fool he has very poor taste. Even some of the elves don't care for his nastiness about the dead elves left to rot in the pass.

The twins. Sigh. I liked them so much in the books. Tolkien made them sound so noble and mighty. And then we have a grubby Man. Arwen can have him I want the twins. The three set out to defuse the situation but I think not at this point. Ithil'wath really has poor control over his tongue with the Man statement. Ouch. The dwarves are clearly looking forward to this and so are your readers. I thought your twins and Aragorn had such lovely manners. Too bad it didn't rub off on the warriors.

OOH Brutal savagery among the mythic wood elves. Well more dangerous after all. And we get another verbal jab from the twins. And they choose cudgels. That sounds so painful. Aragorn realizes that the dwarves have some first hand knowledge of the wood elf's abilities. Well Ithil'wath is just asking for it after all. I really like your dwarves. I can see your Gimli on the quest.

Legolas, small and slight to Ithil'wath. Frodo was small and slight too and look at what he accomplished. Size may matter but heart matters more. So save your pity Ithil'wath you'll need it for yourself. After lots of laughter from the guards they begin to realize this isn't going to be a walk in the park and get very quiet.

Ouch. So the elder sets the pace and Legolas gets whacked a big one. I did like Legolas' thoughts about how big brothers had prepared him more than adequately for combat. That is their job after all. If they aren't around to take care of little brothers then they have to prepare them to take care of themselves.

I liked the image of Legolas spinning, swirling, hopping and jumping around the sun glinting off his hair like the "uncivilized" wood elf that he is. My, is it getting warm in here?

So now the whole fight is just getting boring. He has learned all he can. In Legolas' estimation Ithil'wath isn't nearly the fighter he deems himself to be so it is time to wrap this all up and he does. Well he might have made things worse for a few elves but for the majority they can clearly see that Legolas was not lying when he made his statements. He is a valorous warrior and he won't be hassled in Imladris when this gets around as it surely will.

Well the dwarves are cleaning up as far as the bets go. Seeing eye to eye. That was a beautiful scene. First between the dwarves and Legolas, then the elves all shaking hands. It also shows that unlike some of compatriots from the Greenwood, Legolas can make common cause with a race that is usually shunned by his realm

I also enjoyed the banter about brothers and how they always have their littler brother's interests at heart. Yeah right. That is why Legolas' adar taught him a few extra tricks. To keep him from his brother's tender care.

I loved him trying to get out a complete sentence. I can just see him like an observer at a tennis game. Turning his head as each one of the brothers put in his two cents worth. What a hoot. Yes I think Imladris is going to be a very confusing place for such a new elf/warrior. I like your twins and Aragorn. They just take charge and help the new elf along.

    Very nice.

    Part 5

Oh now we have hobbits. I read the books for decades (that makes me sound so old, not necessarily wise though) and I was always hobbit-centric. I adored hobbits. It was only with the movies that I became interested in the elves. 'Lorien, Imladris and Legolas were just wonderful. So now I read fanfiction to learn more about them and how other people view them.

The miscommunication was funny. Even the Mirkwood/Greenwood comment that upset Legolas. It is true that Men came up with that one and the wood is much too sacred to the elves to call it Mirkwood. Elves would not appreciate that apellation at all.

I am so glad that someone is being nice to Legolas. Well at least with no ulterior motive. I think Glorfindel has a little bit of the hots for sweet virtuous Legolas. The hobbits got a laugh out of him anyway. It is so nasty to have to put on begrimed clothes over a nice clean body, poor elf. He would like to be cleaner. He approved of manners in the Shire. Well the hobbits certainly possess better manners than many of the elves in Imladris. This is so we can have angst though so I will forgive them when the time comes, if it ever does. The hobbits certainly chirked up this elf and he needed it badly.

Oh now the Naugrim and just when he was having a nice sing-a-long with the trees. He was so enjoying himself. We go from the nice manners of the hobbits to the rather odd manners shown by dwarves. I thought it was a nice touch when he was younger he tried to learn their language and watched over them so they could be safe. Of course the elves never let the dwarves know they do this since there is certainly bad blood between them since Erebor.

I thought the point about how much the dwarves would weigh is a valid one. They have on chain mail, at least one battle axe and they are not sylphlike in their person. I wondered at Gimli keeping up on the race to save Merry and Pippin. It seems he would have a heart attack before they got far but this isn't my world so I will continue to suspend disbelief.

First Gimli careened into the baggage and knocked it all over and then the other dwarves had to run for their lives. Then he got pole axed by the light and fluffy elf. I think Legolas showed us what kind of temper he has a few times now. Young and ready to rumble.

So now the dwarves want to make nice with names like Hammer Hands and Axe Foot. I do think they would be eager to show off their prowess and it seems they are able to accept someone else's prowess also. It seems all will now be bygones. I thought the hospitality of the dwarves to Legolas if he showed up unannounced at the Lonely Mountain was funny. And they all knew it was funny too.

So now they all go marching to the training grounds with Legolas gory and besmirched with four dwarves singing a marching song and Legolas wants to be inconspicuous. Nice try.

    Part 4

Your Erestor is being a nasty git in your story isn't he? Although I find him kind of a hoot too. I can just see him cluching his pearls, snacking on petit fours over tea and being so finicky and precious like a Victorian matron with a particularly juicy bit of gossip. Even though the room is more male than it can possibly be for such a gossipy ellon. I love the observatory part though. I do think the elves would spend a lot of the time and energy gazing at the stars and studying them. The stars are so important to their lives. Lindir is nicknamed Red Ringlet. I have to fall over laughing here. That is a good one.

Oh dear we have a snotty Erestor again. At least Elrond is in control of his household. Good thing considering his cousin is kind of a handful. What has poor Legolas Cuthenin ever done to Erestor to make him so snotty about the archer? He seems to be fixated on abasing him as much as possible. Although I did like dripping from the amniotic sac. That was funny indeed. Sending Legolas to meet his death wasn't nice though. He did a good job of getting the message through even though he lost everyone. He can't help that, blame orcs.

Well this is surely a love affair gone wrong between Erestor and Glorfindel. They have this power struggle going on as to who will hurt the other the most. How sad that two immortal lives, one who has been reborn, have to waste their time in such a futile endeavour. Elrond acts like a noble Lord even if his seconds don't. Oh Rumil was the third part of this triangle. Does this colour Erestor's view of wood elves?

So now Elrond puts on the Lord hat and lets Erestor know that he views Legolas as almost a kinsman. That is very nice of him. I am sure he has had many reservations about his kinsman over the years but he is willing to let bygones be bygones why can't Erestor his cousin? I did like Erestor getting really raked over the coals for his wagging tongue. As long as I am not in the hot seat I am OK to watch someone else get it.

So Glorfindel "wronged" Erestor and has never paid for it. Well this will be interesting to keep tabs of.

Now we have serious discussion of what effect this loss will have on such a young warrior. I think Erestor will think twice now about his wagging tongue since he has been well and truly scalded here.

I enjoyed the history you gave the House of Oropher and Legolas. I am drawn to tales like this. Ones that add to Tolkien in a very meaningful and believable way. I look forawrd to more information about the wood elves from this Galdor elf.

How nice of Erestor to want to "warn" Legolas of the perfidy of Glorfindel. Sounds good. At least he got waylaid and then he ran into another situation that he couldn't really make use of. I like your twins. They sound like they would be great comrades at arms for an inexperienced warrior. I think it is sweet that Legolas isn't used to being waited on. Sounds like the woodland realm is kind of on a military footing with no nonsense tolerated. I like that Erestor is going to have to adjust his moods, I think his attitude could use some help also. I look forward to more of this battle and I just hope that Legolas doesn't get hurt too much in the process.

    Part Three

The hot springs sounded so nice. We have some in my neck of the woods. They used to be nice places to go. We have had some murders there and nice people don't go any more. They have become a haven for drug users now. Very sad.

So nice for Cuthenin to get some respite from his physical pains. I can tell right away that Glorfindel and Erestor don't like each other. What a nasty little confrontation they had. And it sounds like it is not an unusual one either.

No clean clothes. How painful for him to have to put on his bloody ones after getting all clean. And sandstone? Ouch they will sandpaper their elven butts sitting on that.

At least Cuthenin has some diplomacy to display to counteract Erestor's total lack thereof. He doesn't want to cause any more conflict. Well any more than he already has. We get to see Erestor's personality is quite nasty here. Cuthenin's mastery of Quenya will probably rise up to bite Erestor in the butt at some point. I can see the wisdom of the messengers being so well informed and educated. They could easily pick up little tid bits for the king at times. Especially if they are just considered lowly, stupid wood elves. Always get people to underestimate you and you can easily surround and defeat them.

I did like Glorfindel's concern with his well being and poor Cuthenin, poisoned and badly damaged by the nasty orcs. And then Erestor has to make fun of that too. The blue swelling as a sign of poison was a nice touch.

The tattooing sounds lovely. It is so nice he is an elf. He won't get all wrinkled and saggy skinned. I have seen tattoos on old people and it is not a pretty sight. It is sad that part of the reason for the tattoos is the elven equivalent to dog tags for GIs. Life in the woodland realm is no picnic that's for sure. I also liked that the tattoos were personal but he wasn't ashamed of them for any reason. He has nothing to be ashamed of so far. He has done a good job, he is a wood elf after all and can live by the old ways. I know the Noldor believed that they were well educated but although many elves saw the light of the two trees it didn't stop them from being cruel and unfeeling to other elves. I would have been with Oropher in his flight from them. I don't like bullies.

So both Glorfindel and Erestor can read the runes and tell that Cuthenin is Legolas, the third son of the king and this gives Erestor some more ammunition for baiting the wood elf. He's not really nice at all is he? It will be interesting to read the history between the two Imladrin elves and see where all this comes from.

I would hate to share a pool with the archer right now though. He is all blood boltered and is soaking and washing all that off in a communal pool. Icky. I would have asked him to rinse off before he got in with me but then Glorfindel is a warrior and he might not even notice. I hope not.

I did like the ogling of the poor naked warrior. I would ogle too. Sigh. Now we find out he prefers males and that is forbidden in his realm and that is a burden he has to bear that also wounds him. Poor thing.

The Quenya is a nice joke on Erestor, and Glorfindel for that matter. And yes Erestor was a bore, he doesn't need to be paid any heed to. I was glad to see that Glorfindel seems to have the hots for the wood elf and vice versa. This will be nice to follow. Somehow I don't think Legolas Cuthenin is going to be able to drop his bad news and hare off into the wilds quite so quickly as he wants to.

Nice chapter. I quite enjoyed the idea of three naked elves in hot water. Physically and metaphorically.

    Part Two

Lovely description of Imladris. Wouldn't you love to live there and be calmed by the presence of the elves? The difference between Imladris and Mirkwood would be so pronounced. We then get a glimpse of the trip Cuthenin took from the eyes of a total non-traveler. I don't think elves or people moved around all that much considering the obstacles presented by orcs and bands of men up to no good. And Cuthenin thinking the stables were the elves housing and then getting his first glimpse of the Last Homely House East of the Sea was nice. It must have seemed like a palace to him. And his realization that the horses were better housed than the elves of his homeland. Very sad. I got a kick out of his horse wanting to check out this nice new stable and get his share of the oats.

He was alone and adrift until his Vanyar saviour came to his rescue again. I have to agree that Cuthenin is not at all up to the melee that must have been taking place in the main house. Hobbits, and Dwarves and Men! Oh my!! He is suffering so that he needs peace and quiet and some trees to sing to him, comfort him. I did think it was sweet that Glorfindel doesn't want to offend the messenger by giving him the second best. If he only knew how relieved Cuthenin is.

Oh dear. He is suffering from really deep grief and wants to get his comrades and put them in body bags. Elves can die from this kind of grief. At least he gets Glorfindel's view of battle and death. This can't but help because no one will disagree that the Balrog Slayer has a unique view of both. He helped the archer maintain some kind of equilibrium and that is good.

What a good idea. A nice talan in a big old oak tree in a grove of other trees. The wood elf is so relieved to be in such a homelike setting even though Glorfindel is a little startled. So when Glorfindel comes back the messenger has collapsed from grief and fatigue and sleeps the morning away. Glorfindel must have lots of elves to do his chores for him since he gets to stay there for when the messenger wakes up. Which is a good thing considering the rest of this scene. Poor messenger. He feels he was to blame for Gollum's escape. I did like Glorfindel's comments that the orcs would have come no matter what and having him outside probably saved many elven lives. I was surprised that he had no arrows. He should have tried to reclaim some for his own safety but maybe he felt so unsafe that he just took off like a bunny and ran.

Glorfindel's little speech to Cuthenin was masterful. Some can not accept that there will be casualties and those in command just have to suck it up and go on. He can show Cuthenin the reality of the situation and allow him to free himself of guilt. After all the elves are immortal and their fear will go the Halls of Waiting and Cuthenin will one day meet them again. Glorfindel did know how to make the messenger face the reality and burden of leadership and that he feels Cuthenin is capable of this difficult task and that is like balm on the messenger's fea. Such a nice moment of growth for him.

Not timid to be stark raving rude nude in front of strangers. I would be.

This was a nice connector chapter. Since elves reach their majority between fifty and one hundred I would guess that the messenger is at most one hundred. Like a babe in the woods in elven terms so we would expect him to be very green and untried. Poor baby. It will be interesting how this immaturity will play out in this tale.

    Part One

I have to label chapters or I get confused about what I have or have not reviewed.

We have lots of elvish here which I really like. I appreciate that you translate immediately rather than at the bottom of the page. If I have to scroll down it really disrupts my enjoyment of the flow of the story.

Elladan and Elrohir out having fun. Well they are young. What about three thousand or so, maybe less. Let the boys have their fun as long as it is at the orcs expense. Of course dad is always going to be glad to have them home in one piece but Glorfindel can understand their attitude.

The Dark One's eye fixed on Rivendell. It would be anyway. I am sure he knows where all the elven rings are. They would be spots of light in a dark world. Light he wants so much to extinguish. They will all be cloaked until they leave Rivendell which is a good thing.

I enjoyed the "ancients" and their conversation and then Mithrandir gets called "Old One" by Glorfindel, who is no spring chicken. His warriors having all seen more than one age of fighting. I can never really wrap my mind around being immortal.

Now we have all the dead orcs scattered around. Always a nice sight to a warrior. And the damage done by silvan elves from Mirkwood. The Noldo can keep their mouths shut about that. I wrote that before I read the scene at the ford. They do need to keep their mouths shut don't they? The messenger shows remarkable self control considering. Stupid Noldo.

I relished having Glorfindel and the messenger eyeing each other and assessing what is going to happen. The poor messengers not lasting long was sad. And this one being so young and the questions that brings up in Glorfindel's mind. Expendable or more trustworthy. My family is always quoting a phrase from "Thoroughly Modern Millie" So sad to be all alone in the world. Then we laugh. But the poor messenger is all alone having lost all his companions to the orcs and now having the Noldo make fun of him. How vile.

I like your Glorfindel. I have been reading a tale about him where he is less than noble. He is quite nasty as a matter of fact. I like him noble but flawed and in need of companionship. Preferably male.

Well the messenger has self control up to a point and the point has been over reached. After all he has his honour to consider. Elrond's honour is at stake also. Could his warriors not show propriety if not kinship to this messenger? Messengers were to be treated with the utmost respect and given the best treatment. They were emissaries of their respective rulers. The Noldo don't come off looking very good here especially the MoonShadow elf. Ha! He got fired. Put that in your elven pipe and smoke it you git.

Kind of a mixed bag here. Many of the other warriors look down on poor Cuthenin as more common than men. Kind of insular here aren't they? The need an attitude adjustment. Well no good will come of this. At least I hope not because strife and battle is much more interesting than elves swanning about looking good. Although a little of that is fun too.

So poor Cuthenin is under a heavy burden. He has a message to present and has lost his companions. It would be awful if he had to go back home alone considering how bad the orcs are. Well we shall see.

I look forward to reviewing the next chapter and please forgive any typos. They are the bane of my existence.

Well worth the wait! Love that Thranduil gave his support and announced as loudly as he could that he loved this child of his, regardless of the circumstances of his birth. And that the princes also supported Legolas. Can you refresh my memories? Have they ever been jealous of their youngest brother? They seem to have completely accepted him as their own. And what of the rest of Thranduil's family? Have they more or less accepted him, perhaps have even become somewhat fond of him?

I'd like to hear more of this fellow that has incurred Glorfindel's disfavor through an admittedly eyebrow-raising act. What exactly were they doing? I assume that the cousin is also a follower and is thus examining the brands. And what of the two princes' assumption for the reason of Glorfindel's outburst? Was it genuine, or was it feinted for the purposes of covering for Legolas' preferences?

Oh, and can't wait for the grilling Glorfy's in for!! lol

    Hey!
What a wonderful surprise when I got up this morning and just thought I would check to see if anything had been updated. I don't care how long you take in describing things or getting to certain points. It's such a pleasure to read so well-crafted, not to mention well written, a story, I wish it would never end; although I know it must eventually.
I'm still trying to send that good karma your way. Take care.
    Later,
    Daphne

Great chapter!!! I guess you choosed wisely, Thranduil loves Legolas and in time he will come to understand his son's option and accept it. I would love to see Thranduil giving him his blessing.
