Warriors' Due
Torchlight danced random patterns against the walls of the Hall, moonlight adding to the ambiance as it streamed in through the latticework of the branches of the great mellyrn overhead.
Clad in white, softly glowing in the moonbeams, Lord Celeborn and his lady-wife, Galadriel, stood at the head of the dais as the soft strumming of the lutes faded away. When silence once again filled the Hall, Lord Celeborn's deep, rich baritone filled the air.
"They guard. Through rain, through snow, through searing heat and blistering cold, never in their duties do the Guardians falter."
"They guard and we are grateful," answered those in attendance.
"Our home is protected, our children kept safe."
"They guard and we are grateful," came the communal reply.
"They show courage and strength in battle."
"They guard and we are grateful," again the voices rose to fill the Hall.
Lady Galadriel's soft, musical voice picked up the thread from her husband, and although much lower in volume was still heard by every ear.
"They guard. They give of themselves without recompense, wholly and without hesitation.
"They guard and we are grateful."
"They sacrifice themselves to keep us safe."
"They guard and we are grateful."
"Tonight, on this night, this one night alone in a decade, as we have for upon an Age we give them their due."
At a slight signal from Lord Celeborn, every head in attendance bowed reverentially, hands touched to hearts as the Guardians of the Wood, led by their Captain, marched in silent unison up the center aisle. Each Guardian saluted his Lord and Lady before stepping to the side, eventually lining both sides of the Hall. Each tall and strong, each bearing his bow and quiver they stood shoulder to shoulder in their Grays, proud, solemn and silent.
Haldir, alone in his blood-red cape and silver breastplate, stood near the foot of the dais. Head held high, his gray eyes reflected the silver moonlight as he focussed at a point in the far distance, seemingly unseeing of the audience who stood in attendance.
"These are our Guardians, our Faithful, our Protectors," Celeborn said solemnly. "We give them their due."
At a barely perceptible nod from the Silver Lord, a long line of ellith glided silently, gracefully into the room.
In keeping with tradition, each elleth was dressed in identical simple, white gowns. No stones glittered, no jewelry adorned their girdles, no brooch caught the moonlight. Their hair hung free and unbraided, flowing in graceful waves down their backs and held from their faces by a circlet woven of tiny white flowers. Eyes downcast, they stood in a respectful silence, hands clasped before them holding sprays of the same white flowers as adorned their hair.
"These are our future. Our Life-givers, our Daughters of Lorien," the Lady continued, raising one graceful, slender hand to gesture at the maids standing before the dais. "In them rest the hope and dreams of the Eldar. As the Guardians sacrifice themselves to keep us safe, so these maids will also give sacrifice of themselves."
"We are grateful for their sacrifices," spoke those who watched.
"You who have chosen to give of yourselves this night shall be the blessed of Eru. He will smile upon your sacrifice, and it will be remembered when ere you set your feet upon the shores of Aman."
Celeborn raised his hands, his voice carrying through the Hall. "Let those who sacrifice to guard and those who offer themselves to them be as one. Captain, choose."
Haldir, his face still set in a stony, expressionless mask walked slowly down the line of maids, eyeing each in turn. He had already decided which he would choose - had decided in fact, the moment the line of ellith had entered the Hall. Like all decisions made by the Captain it was made quickly, without hesitation, and never doubted once made.
She stood near the rear of the line, petite for an elleth, the top of her head barely reaching to his shoulder. He had seen her about the city before, scurrying on some errand or other. Timid, she seemed shy and uncertain of herself and it was this unaware and unaffected attitude that had caught his attention. Most others, especially during a year of the Guardian Night would flirt openly with the Captain trying to make an impression in his mind, for Haldir, as March Warden and Captain, was the only Guardian allowed to choose his companion. The rest would be paired by chance.
She had never sought him out for such games, had indeed only brushed past him once in a chance meeting. Her blue eyes had flicked upwards, apologetic, a brief, shy smile ghosting her lips for a moment, but she had uttered no word and had swiftly gone about her business.
Still, he walked the entire line twice, eyeing each in her turn until he came to a rest before the maiden of his choosing. Her eyes never left her feet, but a blush crept up her neck to color her cheeks as his boots came to a halt in front of her.
"The choice has been made," Celeborn announced, gesturing toward the Captain who still stood silently before the maiden. At the formal announcement, the lutes struck up a soulful, melancholy tune as the remaining maidens began to slowly walk the perimeter of the room. At the end of the song the ellith stopped, each facing a member of the Guardians.
"And so it is done. Your due awaits you, Guardians of Lothlorien, Protectors of the People. Go, claim your due and protect us always." At this pronouncement by Celeborn, the Guardians and their paired elleth, led by Haldir and his, silently walked from the Hall.

Following the flowing red cape of the Captain, her eyes trained on his boot heels, she followed him wordlessly across the bridges and walkways of Caras Galadhon, stopping only when they had reached his talan.
Maintaining his formal posture while she remained with her eyes downcast, a slight tremor running across her shoulders, Haldir asked in a low voice, "You have chosen this path freely?"
"Aye," she murmured, her voice nearly inaudible.
"Have you second thoughts? Speak now and you will be released from your vow."
"Nay," she replied dutifully to the traditional question.
"Then enter, and I will claim that which is my due." Haldir held open the door and allowed the elleth to enter of own free will. He followed behind her, closing and latching the door.
On a small table set just inside the door, a delicate silver ewer sat accompanied by two intricately engraved goblets. Pouring each of them a cup of the dark red wine from the ewer, Haldir handed one to the maid, who took it with a trembling hand.
They each tipped the goblets to their lips taking a sip of the sweet wine reserved for use only by the Guardians and their chosen on this one night alone of the year. Strong and heady, the fragrant wine had been fermented with herbs that would ensure a quick relaxation by both.
His eyes watched her face carefully as she closed her own eyes and drank deeply of the wine. Setting the empty goblet on the table, her face flushed with the effects of both the wine and the proximity of the great Captain.
Shifting his eyes toward the only other door in the talan, Haldir indicated in which direction the elleth should go. Inclining her head slightly, she took a deep breath and seemed to steel herself, then proceeded through the door into Haldir's bedchamber.
Remaining in the outer room, Haldir drained the last of the wine in his cup, setting it down on the table near the maid's. Sighing, he removed his breastplate setting it on the floor near the table along with his bow and quiver, and his cape, hanging it on a peg near the door. Shrugging out of his jerkin and thin, silken undergarment, he folded them neatly and set them on a chair. Kicking off his boots, he shed his leggings with equal efficiency, folding them and setting them with his jerkin.
Nude, he stood for few moments collecting his thoughts. Memories of past Guardian Nights flitted through his mind, flashes of faces and soft, warm bodies remembered with fondness. This one was a bit different than the others that he recollected. More timid, more shy more frightened, although she strove hard for bravery. He had not missed the trembling hand that had held her cup. More than the usual eager and oft times enthusiastic behavior of his past choices, this demure and quiet elleth excited him in a way the others had not.
He walked to the entry of the bedchamber, standing framed in his bare glory by the doorframe. His hair, braided in the traditional warrior braids, hung like a wash of molten silver down his back. Broad of shoulder and chest, muscles rippling with the strength of ages spent as a Guardian, narrow hipped and long legged, he was perfection personified. Gray eyes, capable of searing glares now softened as they beheld the young elleth who awaited him, shivering on his bed.
Petite, fragile-looking, looking nearly lost in the expanse of the bed built for the much larger Guardian, she lay as a pale vision, her golden hair splayed across the pillows. A pastel-colored apparition of creamy white skin, peach-tipped nipples, delicate pink lips and soft blue eyes.
Those soft blue eyes grew a bit wider, her lips parting and her tremble intensifying as they beheld him in the doorway. His very presence was nearly overwhelming, made more so by the sight of his organ, already rigid and ready, rising from its resting place between his sculpted thighs.
Haldir lay himself beside her on the bed, propped up on one elbow. Laying his hand gently on her cheek, looking into her frightened eyes, he whispered, "Fear me not."
"Aye, Captain," she managed to reply, although her mouth felt as dry as sand.
"You are inexperienced," he said softly, his hand remaining on her cheek. It was not a question he could tell by her demeanor that she was not.
A small nod and a blush that bloomed beneath his hand confirmed his thoughts.
"Has everything been explained to you? Are you aware that this may not be pleasant for you?" Haldir asked, concern evident in his voice. Virgins rarely made the decision to participate in the ceremony almost always the celebrants were experienced elleth, and with good reason. Virginity put too heavy a burden on the Guardian, and on occasion attachments were made that ought not to be formed on such a night.
"Aye, Captain," replied the elleth in a small voice.
"I know not your name," Haldir whispered, now stroking her cheek softly. "I would know it, if you will give it."
" Loniel, Captain. Daughter of Erynlann, and Aearwen."
"Aye, I am acquainted with them both. I remember you as a mere babe in your mother's arms before your father was sent as emissary of his Lordship to the Great Caverns of Mirkwood. When did you return?"
"Not long ago, Captain just after the last of the winter snows."
The small talk had worked to help settle her nerves, as was his intention. If she remained tense it would likely be much more unpleasant for her than necessary. In a small part of his mind, he was grateful to whichever Vala had guided his choice. Another of his Guardians, although brave and true every one, might not have had the patience or desire to be gentle with her, especially the newer recruits who were participating for the first time themselves.
He allowed his thumb to trace her lower lip before lowering his head to kiss her lightly. She tasted of the wine they had sampled, and the flavor on her lips drew him back to kiss her again, longer and deeper as his hand slid down her graceful throat to her shoulder. Beneath his fingers her skin was as velvety soft as a rose petal, and he made a small sound of pleasure in his throat as he continued to kiss her.
He would not rush this, both for her sake and his own. This night came only once in a decade and he had learned from experience to draw it out, to make it worthy of memory.
Breaking contact with her lips, he looked again into her eyes, now half-hooded with the desire his lips and his fingers had awoken in her, as they peered back at him. Pleased that she was responding to his touch, he allowed himself a bit more passion. Seeking her lips once more, his tongue swept across them. Rewarded with entrance, it slid across her own, enticing and inviting hers to dance.
His hand found her breast, cupping the soft flesh and kneading it gently in his palm. She moaned softly into his mouth, her back arching slightly into his touch.
Leaving her lips, his own traveled the graceful lines of her jaw and throat, laying a trail of soft kisses as they passed. Gently he nipped at her flesh, and was rewarded with another soft moan. Working his way down, his lips found her nipple, hardened already by his other attentions. He laved it with his tongue, circling it, flicking it, before taking it into his mouth fully. Suckling at her breast while his hand still teased at its mate, his member grinding wantonly against her thigh drew a moan from his own throat as he felt drops of wetness, evidence of his own mounting need moisten the soft skin of her leg.
As her heart began to beat faster and her breath grew quicker, she lost a bit of her shyness. Her hands wandered to his hair, sliding the silky strands through her fingers. Gently, they traced the delicate tips of his ears, and he groaned loudly at the shivers that ran down his spine at her touch. She pulled her hands away as if they were burned, frightened that she had displeased him.
Releasing her breast, he looked up at her, his eyes glazed with desire, whispering, "Please do not stop touch me, little one " His lips attacked her breast again, scarcely able to contain his passion as she resumed her exploration of his ears. Her unskilled and hesitant touches drove him to a new level of excitement that he had not felt since he himself had been inexperienced on his first Guardian Night. Nipping and suckling, he marked her breast before moving still lower to the tender flesh of her belly.
He lay his head on her belly, giving himself a moment to collect himself, to rein in the fierce desire that was sweeping through him, threatening his self-control. Her hands gently massaged his shoulders, as if she knew he was struggling and sought to comfort him.
Turning his head, his tongue again took up its circuitous path, painting a wet trail across her sensitive flesh and sending ripples of pleasure across her skin.
Before him lay her secret place with its promise of honey and sweetness. Using his thumbs he opened her folds, exposing her hidden treasure to his eyes. She gasped as his tongue tasted her, flicking lightly against the nub he had exposed. Drawing it into his mouth, he sucked it gently before releasing it once more. Again and again his tongue danced across it; again and again his lips drew it in and released it back until she began to writhe on the bed, begging him for something of which she had no name.
His name upon her lips as she arched her mound into his mouth severed his last vestige of self-control. Rearing, he lifted her hips, aligning himself with her entry, and slipped steadily, but gently into her depths. A quick, short thrust broke her barrier, and he sheathed himself fully in her channel, moaning his pleasure as her wet heat and tightness enveloped his organ.
She felt a burning pain, and knew from what she had been told that he had taken her maidenhead. The pain rapidly subsided, replaced by a new and wondrous feeling as he filled her completely. She took as much pleasure in the ecstatic expression on his beautiful face as she did in the feelings he was teasing from her depths as he began to move within her.
He established a rhythm that would soon bring him his release, and so sought to give her hers before that moment. Finding her nub with his thumb, he worried it, teased it, taunted it, all the while encouraging her vocally, telling her of her sweetness and heat, until her entire body began to thrash as her orgasm hit her with a force that nearly rendered her unconscious.
He found his soon after, thrusting hard and fast, throwing his head back as his silver hair flung behind him in a shimmering curtain. He roared his pleasure, his voice guttural and primal. Collapsing on top of the quivering elleth, he panted as waves of pleasure continued to roll through him, gradually ebbing and fading away.
Finding her lips again, he gathered her close to his chest, cradling her tenderly in his arms. When his breath was finally restored, he whispered the time-honored and traditional expression of thanks and gratitude for her sacrifice. "For this night, you have become the Guardian. For this night, you have become the Protector. You have kept me safe, held me close, and given me the strength and will and desire to continue in my duties. For this, I salute you and am grateful, Daughter of Lorien."
She remained silent, although she kissed him softly before she rose from his bed, hiding the soreness she felt between her legs. Dressing swiftly, she did not look back as she left his talan, returning to her own.
They would meet again by chance at the odd festival or gathering, or simply as each went about their business in the city. Neither would ever speak of that night, though both would think of it, and both would harbor a fondness for the other. Perhaps they would someday form a relationship with each other or another, perhaps not. Only Eru knew, and he did not share his secrets.
The Guardians were given their due, and Lothlorien was well protected.
The End.
