1. Saruman
The
small company, let by Gandalf and King Theoden were at the outskirts of
Isengard. The Countess had not missed the surreptitious looks directed at
her by both Gandalf and Legolas, more often now as they approached the Black
Tower of Orthanc. Gandalf had warned her more than once that Saruman was
not to be killed; Legolas's concern for her of recalling her previous visit to
the Black Tower was in his eyes as they got closer
to Orthanc. She wondered herself about what she would feel, if she would
remember anything. In the end, when they came within sight of the Black Tower,
she waited, almost expectantly, to feel something. But she remembered
nothing, felt nothing. Until they came through the
trees to the broken wall of Isengard.
They
could hear the hobbits laughing and talking before they came out of the trees
and actually saw Merry and Pippin, sitting on the broken wall, alive and
well. Gandalf had told them the hobbits had survived their capture by the
orcs but the joy and relief they all felt at seeing the hobbits was in the
looks they gave each other.
The
hobbits finally noticed their approach.
"Welcome, my Lords, to Isengard," said Merry, rising to stand
unsteadily on the wall.
The
hobbits had come down from the wall and Pippin rode with Aragorn, Merry with
Eomer as they rode to the Black
Tower, where a moving
tree was waiting for them.
Legolas
watched and listened with delight as the others, who also had never seen an Ent, exclaim to each other over the talking tree. The
Countess had been too many places and seen too many different kinds of beings
to share their shock but she smiled as Treebeard addressed the wizard.
"Young
Master Gandalf," he said. "I'm glad you've come. Wood and
water, stalk and stone I can master. But there is a wizard to manage
here, locked in his tower."
They
all looked up at the balcony of the Tower but they saw no one.
"Show
yourself," said Aragorn quietly. They all
knew they would have to deal with Saruman, but they all dreaded seeing him.
"Be
careful," said Gandalf. "Even in defeat, Saruman is
dangerous."
Gimli
spoke up. "Then let's just have his head and be done with
it." The Countess couldn't help but think that this time, Gimli
spoke with much wisdom.
"No!"
said Gandalf quickly. "We need him alive. We need him to
talk."
"You
have fought many wars and slain many men, Theoden King, and made peace
afterwards." Raising their eyes to the top of the Tower, they saw
the tall wizard in white, leaning on his staff, looking down on
them. "Can we not take counsel together as we once did, my old
friend? Can we not have peace, you and I?"
But
King Theoden made it clear that he was in no mood for peace with the Wizard and
Gandalf tried to reason with Saruman, tried to get information from the
defeated Wizard.
Saruman
only mocked them. "So you have come
here for information?” Saruman said silkily. “I have some for you," he said,
nodding slightly. He brought his Palantir out and held it up for them to
see. "Something festers in the heart of Middle Earth. Something that you have failed to see. But the Great Eye has seen it,"
continued Saruman. "Even now, he presses his advantage. His
attack will come soon."
Gandalf
urged Shadowfax closer to the Tower.
"You
are all going to die," said Saruman, his quiet voice making the prediction
even more chilling. "But you know this, don't you, Gandalf?"
He voice rising, he continued. "You cannot think that this Ranger
will ever sit upon the Throne of Gondor. This exile, crept from the
shadows, will never be crowned King. Gandalf does not hesitate to
sacrifice those closest to him. Those
he professes to love."
The
Countess saw Aragorn’s head lower and she felt a flare of anger, not at
Saruman but again at Gandalf, anger that she'd thought she'd managed to
extinguish.
Then
it was her turn as Saruman continued. "So, Monster, Gandalf let you
live. No doubt he finds you as useful as we did."
The
Countess just bowed her head; guilt washing over her.
Saruman
turned his attention back to Gandalf.
“Tell me, what words of comfort did you give the Halfling before
you sent him to his doom?"
Saruman's
words found their mark again and everyone could see Gandalf's shoulders slump
at the Wizard’s words. "The path that you have set him on can
only lead to death."
Gimli
had had enough. Saruman would tell them nothing useful,
only harm them all with his poisonous words. "I've heard
enough!" he shouted. "Shoot him!" he urged Legolas.
"Stick an arrow in his gob!"
Legolas
had heard enough himself and didn't want Orenin, didn’t want anyone to
hear more of Saruman's poison; he reached back and pulled an arrow from his
quiver and fit it to his bow.
"No!"
said Gandalf again, stopping Legolas. "Come down, Saruman!" he
shouted up at the figure on the Tower. "And your life will be
spared!"
"Save
your pity and your mercy," shouted Saruman. "I have no use for
it!" And raising his staff, he sent
a fireball down to the base of the Tower at Gandalf. But before the
others could react, the fire died away and they saw that Gandalf and Shadowfax
were unharmed.
"Saruman!"
shouted Gandalf at the clearly startled Saruman. "Your staff is
broken!" And at that, Saruman's staff came alight and flew apart.
They
then saw another figure come out onto the Tower behind Saruman. It
was Grima. "So this is where he ended up," she said to Legolas.
King
Theoden addressed him. "Grima! You
need not follow him! You were not always as you are now. You were
once a man of Rohan! Come down!"
Though
Grima bowed at those words, he did nothing more than that but stand and stare
down at them.
"The man of Rohan?" Saruman said. "What
is the House of Rohan but a thatched barn where brigands drink in the reek and
their brats roll on the floor with the dogs? Victory at Helm's Deep does
not belong to you, Theoden Horsemaster!" he said with contempt.
"You are a lesser son of greater sires."
Theoden
tried again. "Grima! Come down.
Be free of him." Perhaps he could
give them useful information.
"Free?!"
shouted Saruman. "He will never be free."
"No,"
said Grima.
"Get
down" said Saruman, turning to him. "Cur!" and struck
Grima in the face, knocking him down and out of their sight.
"Saruman,"
said Gandalf, trying again. "You were deep in the Enemy's
counsel. Tell us what you know!"
Saruman
turned from Grima back to them. "You withdraw your guard and I will
tell you where your doom will be decided. I will not be held
prisoner here..."
Suddenly
they saw Grima again, his hand holding a knife upraised behind Saruman.
He stabbed Saruman twice before Legolas let loose his arrow and hit
Grima. But it was too late.
Saruman
turned and fell backward off his Tower, a long fall that seemed to take an
eternity and all they could do was flinch as Saruman landed with a
horrible thud, impaled on one of his great spiked wheels.
Gandalf
said urgently "Send words to all our allies and to every corner of Middle
Earth that still stands free. The Enemy
moves against us; we need to know where he will strike."
The
weight of Saruman's body pulled the wheel forward and, with a great groan, it
went around and they watched Saruman's body disappeared into the water.
"The
filth of Saruman is washing away" said Treebeard. "Trees will
come back to live here. Young trees…"
Pippin
slid down into the water from his place on Brego
behind Aragorn.
"…wild
trees…" continued Treebeard.
"Pippin?"
asked Aragorn.
Pippin
ignored him and, finally finding what he sought, he lifted the Palantir of
Orthanc out of the water and looked at it carefully.
Gandalf
urged Shadowfax over to the hobbit.
"Bless
my bark!" said Treebeard in surprise.
"Peregrine
Took" said Gandalf sharply. "I'll take that, my lad."
Pippin
looked reluctant but gave it to Gandalf when he said "Quickly
now!" Gandalf covered the Palantir with his cloak and then turned
Shadowfax to face the others.
Aragorn
pulled Pippin back up onto Brego and after their farewells to Treebeard, they turned their horses to return to
Edoras.
