Chapter 1

Deep deep down in the blue sea, there is a kingdom long forgotten by those, who live their lifes on land. The people that live in this kingdom are creatures of ethereal beauty – they are the mer-elves.
It’s difficult to describe these wondrous creatures. In millennia few ever seen them and less were able to put their beauty in words. Above the waistline, their body wasn’t different from other elves, except that their skin was very pale, almost white. Beneath the waist however, they had a big tail fin, that enabled them, to swim swifter than any fish in the sea.

In the center of that undersea kingdom, a palace, built from red coral, stood. Here lived the mer-elves’ king.
He was a stern but just ruler, proud but kind. And he was well loved by his people.

The king, a widower, had 12 children, which he loved dearly. But the youngest prince held a special place in his heart, for Erestor was a treasure. His pale skin seemed to glow, his black hair played sensuosly around his head and his eyes... no one had ever seen eyes of that particular colour. A mysterious blue-green, much like the ocean itself, yet different. Disturbingly unreadable – eyes to drown in... and in their depths, they held sparkles of light it seemed.
But it was not only his comeliness, that made Erestor special. His inner beauty even outshone his appearance. He was intelligent beyond his years and an eager student. He was a caring soul and had many friends. Often his laughter could be heard in his fathers halls. Either his laughter, or his singing – for Erestor possessed a beautiful voice.

The young prince had only one flaw – if one would call it thus: He was a hopeless dreamer. He could sit for hours, listening to romantic tales about great lovers of old times. Sometimes he forgot the world around himself, staring hours at the beautiful coral reef with it’s various colours.
And often, Erestor dreamed what life outside the water would be. Many a tale he had heard about the elves on land, their wars, their heroes and legends. He longed to feel the warmth of the sun upon his skin or look at the sky just for once. For Erestor hadn’t been allowed yet to swim to the surface like his brothers and sisters had. No mer-elf was allowed to do so before he reached his coming of age.

But finally, this day arrived.
The morning of his 50th birthday, Erestor was sitting at the dresser, once more lost in his dreams, while the servants braided sweet smelling water lilies in his hair. Today he would finally see the sky, smell the air, feel the sun upon his skin.
The young prince didn’t even notice his father entering the room until the king placed a hand at his sons shoulder.
“Oh adar – I’m sorry! I didn’t hear you come...”
“I’ve noticed that, ion-nîn! So are you ready for some new experience today?”
“More than ready – oh, I’ve waited so long for this!”
“My little Erestor – seldom have I seen you so excited.” The king sighed.
“You do not wish me to swim to the surface, adar?”
“It’s not that... just your old adar being a bit melancholic about his youngest becoming adult. Think nothing about it. Look at you, my dear one – you look wonderful today! Soon, you will be flipping your fins and leave me.”
“I will never leave you, adar!”
“Oh, how I wished these words were true! But it won’t be long, until you fall in love with someone... and I won’t keep you here against your heart’s wishes for there was only one thing, I always desired and that was your happiness.”

A few minutes later, Erestor was on his way to the surface, accompanied by his father. The higher they swam, the brighter the water became, but also a little more rough. Swimming here was completely different from deep down in the ocean. And than Erestor could see a bright light ahead.
“What’s this, adar?”
“This, ion-nîn, is the sun. It shines upon the water surfaces and is reflected there. We are now almost there...”
Another flap of the fin and they reached their destiny. Cautiously, the king stuck his head out of the water and after being sure it was safe, he motioned for his son to do the same.
When Erestor first looked around, all he could do was stare in awe. The sun shone brightly and glittered upon the water. The sky was coloured in a kind of blue, the young prince had never seen before. The wind blew strong this day, but the sun warmed Erestors skin.
“Look at the sky, ion-nîn.” the king said. “Do you see the dark clouds there? They are still far away, but the wind is already strong. Soon, they will cover all the sky and you won’t see the sun anymore. We shouldn’t be here by then...”
“But we just came here, just a little longer... There’s so much to see. What’s this behind there?”
“That, Erestor, is the land. Do you see the rocky shoreline? It’s dangerous to swim there – you could get hurt.”
Erestor turned and pointed to exactly the opposite direction.
“And what’s this?”
“This is the horizon, the place where the heaven touches the sea.”
“No, adar – I mean THIS! The black shadow over there.”
The king looked closely and really, there was a shadow...
“Now, this would be a boat, Erestor.”
“A boat- really?” Erestor’s voice was full of excitement. “Oh, can we swim a little closer, saes!”
“But just a little, Erestor! And be careful! I don’t want us to be seen.”

Glorfindel stood on deck and gazed towards the east. Soon, he would see the shoreline of his new home. Lindon. The blond elf knew nothing about that kingdom, except for the name of its ruler: Ereinion Gil-Galad.
Was he a just king? Greater than Turgon of Gondolin?
Gondolin! The thought of his former home mad him sad again... would Lindon now become his new home? Would the elves there know him? Lord Glorfindel of the house of the Golden flower of Gondolin, the mighty balrog-slayer who gave his life to safe Gondolin’s people and who was now reborn by the grace of the valar... would people see him thus? The thought made him sick.
Suddlenly, something in the water caught his eye. He looked closer, but it was already gone.
Then, a hand was placed upon his arm.
“There is a storm coming, Glorfindel. Ulmo isn’t kind today... We have to prepare the boat!”
“There was something... in the water, Cirdan!”
The other elf laughed. “Are you seeing mer-elves, mellon-nîn?”
“Don’t be silly... that’s just a myth.”Glorfindel shook his head. “Most likely it was just a fish. Let’s prepare the boat. Tell me what to do...”

Erestor was extremely quiet, when they swam back home. His father worried...
“What is it, ion-nîn?”
“The storm, adar? Won’t it be dangerous for the people on the boat?”
“Maybe! But that doesn’t concern us Erestor.”
“Shouldn’t we help them?”
“NO! They are not our business. If they are so folish, to travel over the sea instead of staying on land, it’s their problem.”
Erestor didn’t reply anything, but his heart was still troubled.
Back in the palace, there was a great party with all his friends waiting for him, but while everyone had fun and was making merry, the young prince couldn’t enjoy neither the great dishes, nor the company of his friends.
He had to make sure, the people on the boat made it through the storm safe – he simply had to...
So, Erestor in secrecy left his own party and swam back to the surface.

The sea was very rough now. Cirdan bellowed orders to his mariners, while all that Glorfindel could do, was not to be in their way. The waves crushed down on the boat heavily, leaving the floor slippery.
Suddenly there was a flash and a deafening thunder, and Cirdan screamed: “Careful, the mast is coming down!”
Glorfindel turned around, but it was too late. The breaking mast hit his head hard and threw him overboard. Everything went black....
