10. Healing
Legolas
walked through the glittering caves, not seeing the beauty around him, just
going to Orenin. Gandalf had returned, bringing
Eomer and his men; Helm’s Deep was saved.
But Legolas could not break out of the fog that had enveloped him after
the victory. He found her in a room carved
off a large cavern.
She
had felt his presence coming toward her; she sensed the disturbance in his mind
but she smiled as he entered the room. "Your world is full of
wonders, Love," she said, turning to him. "I've never
seen..." She trailed off and her smile faded. She watched him
as he came in, sat down on a rock and dropped his bow.
Her
heart flipped and she ran over to him. "Legolas, what's wrong?"
she asked, looking over him carefully. She could see no visible wound on
her elf. Her eyes widened. "Aragorn?" she whispered.
He
looked up at her. "Aragorn is unharmed."
"Then
what is it, Love? What is wrong?" He did not answer and after
studying him for a moment, she thought she had it. Feeling guilt but
determined to help Legolas, she said "I know that Haldir is dead,
Love. I am sorry."
"Not
only Haldir," he said, his eyes glassy with
tears. "All of them."
She
frowned at him, not understanding. "All of...?"
"All
of the elves who came to Helm's Deep are dead." He looked down at
the ground. "All save one."
"Legolas?" She sat down next to him.
"I'm so sorry, Love," though her only sorrow was for him.
She put her arm around him and pulled him close.
"Orenin,
it is my fault."
Her
heart tightened. "Oh, Love, no. It was not your fault."
"I
shot at that creature twice. I missed him both times."
She
listened fear for him growing in him as he continued.
"I heard you shout, Love. I tried.” His voice broke. “And now they are dead." He
began to weep in her arms.
"Legolas. Oh, please. Oh, Love."
Kissing the back of his head, her heart broke at his grief. "Love,
you couldn't have stopped that creature. Haldir put an arrow into him;
another elf by Aragorn did as well. There
was a force beyond it driving it forward."
"I
failed you. I failed him. I failed them."
"Legolas
please..." She was desperate; his weeping made her feel like the end
of the world was at hand. "Legolas.
Love..." She couldn’t watch
her beautiful elf wither under this pain, regret and guilt. And made her decision.
She
tilted his chin up to her and looked into his eyes. "Legolas, look
at me."
"I
told you forever; I'll love you forever; I told you I love you..."
Orenin
was sitting on the ground cradling Legolas's head on her lap. He was
asleep, his eyes closed and she stroked his face, looking down at him, singing
a fragment of a song she'd heard on a visit to her world a long time before.
Gandalf
followed the singing through the caves.
She
stopped singing as he appeared at the opening to the small room. She
looked up at Gandalf and nodded at him in acknowledgment at his return, then her eyes went back to Legolas's face. "I
never get to see him sleep," she said gently. "He is awake when
I go to sleep and awake when I wake up."
"You
have seen him sleep more often than you know," said Gandalf.
"Elves sleep and dream with their eyes open." He paused. "Except when they are in healing sleep." He
shifted his staff from one hand to the other and took a deep breath.
"What did you do to him?"
She
looked up at him, unable to conceal the guilt on her face.
Gandalf's
eyebrows raised and he whispered "You didn't..."
Her
eyes blazed with anger. "Never! I
would never do that to him!" She looked down at Legolas and her expression
softened. "I love him so much, Gandalf." She
sighed. "You saw that breach in the Wall?"
Gandalf
said "Yes?"
"He
blamed himself for that, for what happened.” She looked at him defiantly. “It
wasn't his fault. He couldn't have stopped it. He feels guilt for
the deaths of the elves who came here." She
gently hugged Legolas to her breast and kissed his forehead. "It
wasn't his fault," she repeated. She looked up at Gandalf and sighed
again. "I just..." She thought for a moment.
"I just rearranged his memories. He'll remember his competition with
Gimli; everything else will be just background."
Gandalf
smiled slightly. “Yes, Gimli is
looking for him to give him his count.”
Gandalf sighed and gently said "Perhaps you should have let Legolas
deal with it all in his own way."
She
glared up at him. "You didn't see him! You didn't see him
cry." She could not suppress the
anger rising in her at Gandalf anymore and it came spilling out of her. “Where were you?” she asked him
in a low but intent voice. “You
could have stopped it! You could have
stopped it all! They didn’t need
to die. He didn’t have to go
through this!”
He
sighed and then said quietly, “I am bound by my role in this world. I am to advise and guide…”
“Yes,
that’s all very helpful,” she snapped. “I’ve known too many like
you. Advise and
guide,” she said contemptuously.
Looking down at Legolas, her manner softened and she said "I would
kill worlds for him..."
Gandalf
interrupted her. "He would not be pleased to hear you say
that," he said sharply.
She
looked at him through narrowed eyes and said "I only meant that if I
could do that, I would do this. He doesn't deserve to carry that
guilt. And I love him too much to allow it. Not when I can do something about it."
Gandalf
considered them for a few moments, then said "We
leave for Orthanc..."
"First
thing in the morning?" she asked with a short laugh.
"Yes,"
he said. He turned to go, paused and turned back to her.
"Because a thing can be done, Lady, does not
necessarily mean that it should be done," he said gently.
Looking
down at the face of her love, she didn't even look up to watch Gandalf
go. "We'll be ready."
She waited for a while, just gazing at Legolas. Then she leaned over and kissed his
forehead. “Love, wake up.”
He
opened his eyes and smiled at her, then blinked in puzzlement. “Was I sleeping?”
She
stroked his hair. “Yes, for a
bit. Gandalf was here; we’re going
to Orthanc in the morning.”
He
frowned thinking how seeing Saruman again might affect her. “Orenin, will you be able to do
that?” He stood and, taking her
hand, helped her to her feet.
She
shrugged. “I don’t remember
anything of my time there. Why would it
affect me at all?” She
smiled. “Gandalf said Gimli was
looking for you.”
Legolas
laughed. “He will want to let me
know his count of orcs killed.”
“You
go. I’m going to go get a bath
ready.” She raised her hand and
stroked his cheek. “My love, you
look positively…disheveled.”
Aragorn
found Gimli sitting on the body of an orc, smoking his pipe; he stopped and
turned to him. "And what was your final count, Friend Gimli?"
he asked.
"Well,"
said Gimli. "I'll not count the twenty I slew in the Caves.
They were easy pickings and Legolas did not have the chance at them. I'll
declare my count at forty-three."
Aragorn
smiled and clapped him on the shoulder and continued on. Seeing Legolas,
he approached him. Legolas asked him "Have
you seen Gimli?"
Aragorn
pointed back the way he had come and said "Before the Wall. He is
waiting for you." He smiled. "He is anxious to share his tally with
you."
Legolas
began walking the way Aragorn had pointed but he stopped and turned back to
him. "I have decided not to count
the twenty I slew after he was sent to the safety of the caves. I'll
leave my count at forty two."
