Chapter Ten
“I don’t know if that is wise, Elladan,” Elrohir offered. “Legolas is likely not in the mood to hear your excuses. It might be best to let me…”
“I am the one who caused the problem,” Elladan interrupted, pulling his tunic back on. “I will be the one who faces him. I will beg him if that is what it takes.”
“You are going like that?” Elrohir asked, eyebrows raised. “Sweet Eru, you are dense.”
“What? Why?”
“Elladan, you have that whore’s smell all over you,” the elf knight said, shaking his head. “Legolas will not listen to anything you have to say.”
Elrond’s eldest ran his hand through his hair and nodded. “You are right, a bath is in order.”
As Elladan made his way to his room, Elrohir followed, hoping to think of something that might help his brother while speaking to Legolas.
“Legolas will ask what you will do if Ervinai is carrying your child,” Elrohir interjected. "What will you tell him? I would like to know the answer to that question myself.”
“I will not be forced into a loveless marriage, child or not,” Elladan insisted.
“Father will be adamant that you do the honorable thing. You will defy him?” Elrohir couldn’t believe what he was hearing. Elladan had always been the one to do the right thing at all costs; now he was rebelling and Elrohir worried what that might ultimately mean for them both.
“There is always the chance that Ervinai is not pregnant, brother,” Elladan reminded him. “You know how conniving she is as well as I do. It is a lie - one made to keep me in her company, and it will not work. I want a chance with Legolas and I shall have it even if it means choosing to cling to mankind.”
“You would have us all die!?” Elrohir asked in horror. “Legolas will not sail if we choose to remain here and he will suffer, for the call of the sea is already shining in his eyes. For someone who claims to feel as you do about him, you will bring him pain and grief? I will not allow it Elladan!”
The elf warrior started the bath and was silent for a moment. “You cannot make his choice for him, Elrohir. Or have you decided to not choose as I do? Will you separate us for eternity? Will you suffer my loss as father does Elros’?”
“You are being insufferable, brother,” Elrohir pointed out as Elladan slipped into the tub. “We said we would make our choice together, but I will not give up Legolas or cause him pain and neither should you! There has to be another solution to this problem you have caused.”
“I can only hope Ervinai is not carrying my child,” Elladan offered, “but that does not explain my actions of this day. I pray Legolas will grant me forgiveness and give me a chance to make amends.

When Legolas left the twin’s rooms, he made his way back to his guest room trying to convince himself that seeing Elladan’s chest covered in love bites didn’t bother him. It wasn’t as if the elder twin had made any promises to him. They had just agreed to be lovers until they left the valley. The closer he got to his room, the more depressed he became.
Legolas walked into his room and closed the door before heading to the balcony to try to sort out his feelings. There was no question in his heart or mind that he loved Elrohir. If the warmth and emotions he felt while he was with Elrohir meant that he loved him, then wouldn’t that mean he loved Elladan as well? After all, he had first felt those things with Elladan. Elrohir even said he didn’t mind that Legolas felt the same for his brother and that the prince would find the answer to all his questions in his heart.
“My very untried heart,” he muttered to himself. Could he hold what Elladan had done against him when no oath had been spoken between them? No, he decided, he couldn’t. That decision, though, didn’t make him feel any better. Legolas was hurt - hurt that maybe Elladan didn’t feel the same about him, but that didn’t give him a right to be angry. But he was angry and frustrated and confused. All feelings he was used to hiding. Growling, he turned to go back in his room and saw Elladan standing in the doorway. His hair was still wet from his bath and his clothes clung to his body. Stunned, Legolas stood there looking at him and waiting for him to speak.
“I knocked,” Elladan explained, softly. “When you didn’t answer, I…wanted to make sure you…Legolas, please, allow me to explain.”
“You don’t owe me an explanation, Elladan,” Legolas replied, somewhat firmly, stuck in place. “We made no promises to one another.”
“No spoken ones, perhaps,” the elf warrior countered nervously. “If you meant nothing to me, I wouldn’t be here. Please?”
“We should probably talk about this inside,” Legolas suggested, aware there were elves about, even this late in the evening. “I was about to have a glass of wine. Would you like one?”
“Yes, of course,” Elladan replied, stepping aside so Legolas could enter the room.
“Please, have a seat,” the prince said, gesturing towards a chair as he poured their wine. After handing Elladan’s glass to him, Legolas sat in the chair facing the twin with a table between them.
“There are no excuses for my behavior today and I will not offer any,” Elladan stated as he took a seat. After a nervous breath, he continued, “I allowed myself to be seduced and used in a way that shames me. I went there with the intention of breaking things off with her and I did. My feelings for you will not be denied.”
“Yet they were,” Legolas responded sharply.
“It was *your* name I shouted when I peaked,” Elladan admitted in frustration.
Surprised at the admission, Legolas sat there wide eyed for a moment before replying with a grin, “I imagine that was unexpected.”
“It was,” Elladan said, glad to see the prince’s grin. “I am sure a lesser elf would have been beaten to death.”
“What is her name?” Legolas asked out of curiosity.
“Ervinai. And I have never given her any reason to believe she was anything more than bed treat,” Elladan assured him.
“And I am not?” Legolas asked, eyebrows raised.
“Nay, you are so much more than that, Legolas,” Elladan swore as he made his way to kneel in front of the prince and take Legolas’ hands in his own. “I love you as I have loved no other.”
“And Ervinai is out of your life?” Legolas asked, needing to that hear she was.
Elladan sighed, but kept his eyes locked with Legolas’. “When I told her I would never see her again, she told me she carries my child.”
Legolas pulled his hands away and looked at Elladan in anguish. “You come here asking forgiveness and I granted it. You say you love me and you
*know* I return that love. And now you tell me another carries your child!?”
“Legolas, she is lying. I know it in my heart,” Elladan replied hastily.
The prince pushed past the twin, knocking him to the floor. “You may know it in your heart, Elladan, but that does not make it true. If she does carry your child, am I doomed to love someone who cannot truly love me in return?”
“I will think of something. We will be together somehow, someway, I swear it,” Elladan vowed.
Legolas sat on the bed and ran his hand through his hair. “I am suddenly tired. Can we just talk about this tomorrow?”
“Aye, tomorrow afternoon I will know for certain,” Elladan agreed quietly. “I will leave you to rest, my Prince. Would you like me to have Elrohir come by?”
“Nay, I will see you both tomorrow,” Legolas answered softly.
Elladan nodded and left the prince’s room reluctantly.

After the noon meal, Elrond and Elladan approached the healing halls, eager to have the matter with Ervinai settled. Legolas and Elrohir were off to the archery range to practice while waiting for news from the upcoming examination.
As Elladan followed Elrond into the antechamber, he noticed Ervinai sitting next to her father, Sidhon. When she saw the twin, Ervinai smiled at him, confident she would be tied to Elladan for eternity. Sidhon stood when Elrond approached, bowing to the lord in respect, and Ervinai followed his example.
A sick feeling struck Elladan and he almost allowed his neutral countenance to falter. In just a few minutes he would know whether he was to be a father and forced into a loveless marriage. Thoughts of Legolas did not calm him as he thought they would. They only served to remind him what he had to lose if Ervinai was carrying his child.
Lost in his thoughts, Elladan greeted Sidhon as Elrond explained the nuances of the examination to Ervinai.
“There is no need to disrobe, and your father is welcome to observe,” the Elf lord explained. “A midwife will also be present. Why don’t we find a room and get started; I am sure there are other things you have to do today.”
“Will Elladan be allowed to be there, as well?” Ervinai asked sweetly.
“Nay, I think it would be better if Elladan waited outside the room,” Elrond replied, firmly. “You are not married or even betrothed, and it would not be proper.”
Ervinai looked disappointed as Elladan suppressed a snort. There was nothing proper about the elleth, but he did not wish to be in the room. He would rather wait in the hall, where he could pace.
As Ervinai, Sidhon and his father disappeared into an examination room, Elladan slumped against the wall. He hoped the Valar would hear his silent prayers for a life with Legolas.

When the third arrow in a row failed to hit the center of the target, Legolas groaned and turned to his lover. “I cannot concentrate on this, Elrohir.”
“I know, my Prince,” Elrohir replied sympathetically. “We should have gone to the healing halls with Elladan, for support if nothing else. Of course, Ervinai would have been very unhappy to see you again…we should have gone!”
Legolas laughed and hugged the elf knight. “It would have been fun to see the look on her face, but if she is…”
“Do not think about it, seron vell,” Elrohir said, kissing Legolas’ forehead. “Would it be so terrible to just have my love?”
“Nay, ai, nay, Elrohir, never think that,” Legolas replied fervently, grabbing the elf knight‘s biceps, gently. “I love you with all that I am and would live happily with your love for eternity. Never doubt my love or what your love means to me.”
“I will not, ernilen,” Elrohir promised softly. “Sharing your love is harder than I thought it would be, even if it is with Elladan. I have shared a lot of things with him….I never thought I would share the one I love.”
“Aren’t you the one who told me I should not feel distressed that I feel the same for him?” Legolas asked softly.
“Aye, and you should not,” Elrohir replied.
“But in doing so, I hurt you,” Legolas pointed out, gently.
“I am not hurt - just realizing what it is we have started,” the twin clarified.
“Do you regret loving me?” Legolas asked with wide eyes. “Starting this?”
“Nay, my Prince. I will never regret that,” Elrohir said, pulling him into a deep kiss.

Elladan looked up as Elrond exited the examination room and approached him.
“Ervinai is with child, Elladan,” his father stated with a frown.
Elladan sucked in a breath and grabbed his stomach, sure he was going to become ill. “And?”
