Chapter 10: He shouldn't have left me.
Legolas knew how king Théoden thought of the dead; he didn’t care for them. Leave them. Like he supposed Legolas should leave Aragorn when he’d fallen.
He couldn’t leave Haldir. Wouldn’t.
Night had come and gone and still he sat cradling the lifeless body while tears of loss and sadness fell from his eyes.
His throat was sore from all the crying he’d done and his body felt as cold as ice. His light was dimming and he was fine with that.
What life had he without Haldir?
It wasn’t until morning that the Elf was sought out by Aragorn, “Legolas? Legolas, come, you must go inside, sleep… eat”
A light gasp left the ranger as lifeless eyes met his for but a moment, before they returned to the lifeless body in his arms, “Legolas, Haldir wouldn’t have wanted this for you”
Angry eyes shot toward him, “Then he shouldn’t have LEFT me!”
Aragorn knelt down next to the prince, “He didn’t leave you, he was taken from you.”
Legolas pressed a light kiss to the top of the Elf’s head, “Just the same, he’s gone and I am nothing without him”
Aragorn touched Legolas’ shoulder, grasping softly, “It may feel that way now, but you are not alone. He shall wait for you and when it is your time, you’ll be reunited. Haldir wouldn’t want you to rush that moment.”
Frustrating though it was, Legolas knew the ranger was right. Haldir wouldn’t want him to take his own life, worse, if he should… they’d never be reunited in death.
It didn’t ease his heart or the overwhelming sadness he felt.
Aragorn pulled him into a gentle embrace that shattered his mask of control –as far as he’d been able to fool the ranger- and Legolas became a sobbing mess.
The Ranger held the Mirkwood prince, allowing him to grief and pour out the full of his emotions, without any interruption.
It wasn’t until the sobbing ceased that Aragorn uttered a soft, “Let’s give him the passing honour he deserves”
Legolas froze in his arms. So far he’d agreed to everything the ranger had uttered, but to say goodbye to Haldir and let him go? That suddenly seemed overwhelming.
His hold on Haldir returned, grasping the lifeless body tightly, “I wish I could bring him back…It’s not impossible. Glorfindel returned…Why can’t he??”
Aragorn frowned lightly, “We do not know the wishes of the Valar, Legolas. The choice over life and death is not ours to make. We must send him to Lothlorien, to his Lord and Lady, along with his brothers at the very least. They deserve that much, don’t you think?”
A light nod followed the words, though it wasn’t entirely heartfelt.
Aragorn was the first to stand, helping Legolas to his feet, “We should get a carrier, for the bodies. I’m sure the Elves that remain would gladly help us”
The Mirkwood prince nodded, “Haldir should get his own. That honour should be his”
Legolas might be bias, but he led the elves there, his armour stood out most of all, therefore the ‘glory’ ought to be his most of all, “I would like to arrange that”
Aragorn nodded, “If you need any help… any at all… Find me”
The Elf gave a nod, but knew he wouldn’t make use of that offer.
Inside the keep he found the best carriage and though really there wasn’t such time to spare, he looked for the most beautiful flowers he could find to decorate it.
Legolas chose to keep Haldir in his armour, looking royal, strong and like the warrior he was.
He pressed a final kiss to the Marchwarden’s lips, “I will love you Haldir. Always.”
Another wave of anger rushed through him. Haldir had no right to leave him behind, but Aragorn’s words echoed through his mind and reminded him of the truth, “He didn’t leave you, he was taken from you.”
It was true, Haldir would never have left willingly.
A wayward tear trailed down his cheek that he brushed away angrily, “I will be strong. I can do this.”
The Elves were soon sent on their way, leaving Legolas alone in a city of stone where none of nature’s comfort reached him with a group of Men eager for battle.
It was Gimli who found him, giving him a mug of ale, “Here. You look like you could use this, master Elf”
Legolas acknowledged the offered drink with a nod, “Hannon le”
The two shared a drink in silence for which Legolas was grateful. It was the silent comfort that he needed it.
The Ranger joined them soon, with a mug of ail of his own. The silence remained.
It wasn’t until the dwarf excused himself with the suggestion he wanted to find some rest that the silence became overwhelming.
Aragorn seemed to pick up on that as he lightly grasped Legolas’ arm, “I know that nothing I say will change the weight of the situation, but at least he passed on knowing he was loved, knowing you were safe.”
Aragorn was right; it didn’t change much.
Still the thought was comforting, “I think I shall rest some…”
Aragorn nodded. The Elf hadn’t slept in a day, despite the hardships of battle. He needed the rest. Aragorn watched as the Elf moved off and over to his room in the Keep.
The ranger wasn’t sure why, but he felt compelled to follow.
He moved to the prince's door, but stayed outside of it, sitting himself down against the door. He wanted to be near him.
His instinct hadn't been wrong as all too soon he could hear the Elf crying anew.
Aragorn slipped inside and moved to the bed wordlessly after setting his weapons on the floor.
He laid down on the bed next to the Elf and drew him into his arms. Legolas struggled at first, not wanting to accept the comfort because he felt it betrayed Haldir's memory, but Aragorn was relentless, "Be at ease, son of Thranduil, find comfort so that you might find some rest. Think no more of it."
Legolas relaxed into the embrace then, accepting the ranger's comfort.
It took hours for him to find sleep, but as he did Legolas subconsciously curled into the ranger's embraced, turning around and nuzzling his chest, finding comfort and a sense of protection in those arms.
"Legolas? Legolas, wake up to me"
The Mirkwood Elf opened his eyes as though in a daze, "Where am I?"
It was then that Haldir revealed himself, "Námo awarded me some time, I couldn't part from you the way I did... He wasn't happy you kept him waiting, but I knew you'd be stubborn and would refuse to take to sleep. Thank Aragorn for me, later."
Legolas crossed the distance between them within moments, latching on unto the Marchwarden as if he never intended to let go, "I don't know how to do this without you"
Haldir offered him a light smile, "You're already doing it, my sweet prince. I know your heart, but know that I want you to live. What comfort you need, what love you find, do not shy away from it because of me. I know your love, let me look upon you and see you live your life to the fullest... I could wish for no better thing"
A frown crossed the prince's features, "You ask such a thing of me..."
Haldir cupped the Elf's face, kissing his lips softly, "Live the life that was robbed of us, so that I might find peace through your happiness...Saes, Legolas... Promise me"
But Legolas had no time to make such a promise as the world around him faded away and when he opened his eyes anew, he found himself facing Aragorn who offered him a worried glance.
It wasn't until he brushed a hand along his eyes that he realized he'd been crying. Again.
Still a resolve had settled within him as he muttered softly, "I promise"
Aragorn raised a brow in question at the odd choice of words and the Elf offered a light smile, "I saw Haldir... He.. He told me to live life to the fullest, that... I shouldn't shy away from things over him..."
The ranger gave a nod of understanding, "Good advice"
Though not necessarily easy to follow.
