Chapter 10: I can’t
Standing up to Haldir hadn’t been easy, in fact Legolas could barely believe he had dared to do so. Could it be true? Could it be that although this had started out as a task to be fulfilled the Marchwarden had actually desired him? Cared for him?
Legolas couldn’t stop himself being curious, couldn’t stop himself from wondering.
Try as he might he could not put it out of his thoughts, despite the fact that Elladan had declared interest too.
Legolas couldn’t help but compare the two. Elladan was gentle, kind, a warrior with a loving heart. Elladan had never wronged him, never betrayed his trust…. Haldir was considerably larger, more muscular than Elladan, with him Legolas didn’t feel any concern. The Marchwarden was proud, but with reason to be.
Legolas felt attracted to the both of them, even though the two were as different as night and day.
It made trying to figure out where to invest even more difficult.
He pulled the cover up over his head again, but it was a useless attempt. Sleep would not come and if it did it wouldn’t last; as always. Nightmares haunted him when he slept, memories from the past revisited. At times Legolas couldn’t even tell if he was dreaming or not.
With a sigh he pushed the covers up and away before sitting up and putting a hand to his head.
The prince moved out, dressing and leaving his talan, taking his bow and arrows with him as he left.
Though the prince had been told to linger around the center, he just couldn’t.
He refused to risk running into either Haldir or Elladan and so he travelled to the very borders of Lothlorien.
A cry resounded through the forest moments before he heard the horn that alerted the wardens of enemies.
Legolas didn’t know what he was thinking as he found himself running, not away, but toward the source of the alarm.
Rúmil was the first to notice him, “Prince Legolas, you must go… There’s creatures out there… I’ve never seen their likeness so close to our borders.”
Legolas shook his head, “I can help”
And so the Prince chose a great Oak tree to give him cover before he readied his bow and let his eyes wonder.
Being a Wood Elf his sight was naturally better than that of other Elven kind and so he had little trouble finding the intruders and killing them one by one.
A loud battle cry distracted him for a moment as Haldir passed him by even as the prince yelled, “Don’t!”
Frustrated with Haldir’s eagerness to rush into battle Legolas kept his focus on the Marchwarden.
The arrows flew one by one, hitting each target even as Haldir vanished further into the woods.
Rúmil followed at a distance and Legolas remained. He was no help in close combat.
Still he moved in bit by bit as the two Galadhrim moved further away. It wasn’t until Haldir came running back with a pack of creatures following behind that Legolas understood he had been ambushed.
An order was given for the Elves to fall back into the safety of the Wood, but Legolas remained still firing arrows into the creatures that pursued the two brothers until they too were safe.
Only then did he fall back and climbed up the tree with ease shooting more and more of the creatures until none remained.
An angry shout came from down below as Legolas climbed down.
Haldir stood, clearly upset, but Legolas just shrugged, “You do not command me, Marchwarden”
Rúmil’s lips parted in shock of the prince’s words as he offered Haldir a worried glance, but Haldir excused it, “If you hadn’t killed most of these creatures, I’d show you who commands who.”
There was a glimmer of fear in Legolas’ eyes that made Haldir feel guilty instantly, “As it is, I can only thank you for aiding my brother… and me. We might not have made it if it hadn’t been for your aim.”
Legolas bowed his head, “I would’ve aided any in such a situation. It’s the right thing to do”
Though still not entirely happy that his authority had been questioned, Haldir couldn’t help the light smile that crept unto his face, “You honour us all with your presence, prince of Mirkwood, you set a strong example for others to follow that many wouldn’t have considered. Thank you”
Rúmil meanwhile couldn’t have looked more stunned had he tried.
It wasn’t like Haldir to praise insubordination no matter the consequence or outcome, but Rúmil knew better than to question it.
Legolas bowed his head, “It was but the right thing to do, now if you will excuse me…”
Haldir gave a light nod, watching as the prince left them before he felt Rúmil’s eyes on him, “What?”
His younger brother grinned, “You like him, don’t you”
His brother’s look of frustrated annoyance sucked the fun right out of it, “What is the matter?”
Haldir released a quiet sigh, “The Lord Celeborn has forbidden me to pursue him, because his Grandson shares the interest”
Rúmil pouted, hugging his brother, “It will be alright. You’ll figure out a way”
The Marchwarden shook his head, shaking free of the embrace, “I can’t. End of subject. Now, I shall report the attack to lord Celeborn, you keep the armed forces with you, just in case”
His younger brother gave a nod and with that the Marchwarden was off.
Meanwhile the golden-haired Elf walked through the forest aimlessly as thoughts played through his head. Why did the Marchwarden’s compliments mean so much to him? Why did the Marchwarden make him feel like he could take on the world and be victorious?
He’d been so preoccupied with his thoughts that he didn’t notice Lord Elrond until he walked into him, “By the Valar… I am so sorry! Apologies my lord, are you well?”
Lord Elrond appeared more amused than upset as he nodded, “I am fine, Legolas Thranduilion, but you don’t appear to be fine yourself. What is amiss?”
The prince hesitated for a moment but answered in the end, “I cannot make sense of my mind. I cannot seem to make choices without second guessing them.”
Lord Elrond offered a light smile, “Might the subject of this choice be the Marchwarden and my son?”
Legolas offered a light nod, but Lord Elrond was the one to continue conversation, “Take my advice to heart young one, let life lead itself and stop trying to figure it out. Enjoy life and let the choices unravel itself. If you follow your heart and trust it to guide you, it will figure it out on its own”
The words were sensible, but that didn’t necessarily make them ‘easy to do’.
It didn’t help as the Lord went on, “Take your time to get to know them and see for yourself who best matches your wishes.”
Legolas bowed his head in gratitude for the advice, “Hannon le, Lord Elrond, I shall take your advice to heart.”
Lord Elrond was right after all; there was no need to rush it. They had forever and if that was too long for either Haldir or Elladan to wait it made the answer to the matter all the easier.
A smile came to rest on his lips, but it vanished as Lord Elrond mentioned another matter, “Legolas, I wish for you to spend some time in these woods, enjoy the comfort of the trees and learn what you must in the art of battle… I shall remain for some time however, to aid you. We must prepare you for your future… Thranduil shan’t always be King and though it’s been but a week now you’re already making such tremendous changes… Your father shall come to realize your worth, too”
Again Legolas bowed his head, “I dare not hope for such a thing, but I shall take your lessons to heart none the less. Thank you for taking this time.”
Lord Elrond nodded, “Glorfindel and Erestor shall manage in Rivendell without me, loathe they’ll be to accept my absence, this is quite important and they shall understand even if I’m sure they’d wish to have been a part of your growth.”
Legolas bowed his head anew, offering his gratitude for the words without speaking before Lord Elrond excused himself and Legolas remained while contemplating the words.
He never thought of using the things he learned here to reflect upon his title, but now that it had been suggested Legolas could only think how much the idea appealed to him and he wished to make it so.
His father would see his worth, he would make his father proud.
