Chapter 3 - The Watch of the Mighty
Deep beneath the tranquil aquamarine waters of the Encircling Seas, the Lord of the Oceans pondered. His dark helmet, crested with white foam, lay at his feet. A glittering circlet of coral and seashells crowned his head and his countenance furrowed in deep thought.
He was garbed in mithril mail which glowed silver and green. From his body came a great pulsing light and his eyes danced with liquid whirpools.
This was Ulmo, the mighty Valar, of of the greatest of all, whose home and domain were the oceans, rivers and waterways of the world. From here he watched the comings and goings of the Children of Illuvatar. He had always loved Elves and Men and forgot them not in his wanderings, usually inspiring them to the songs of the sea from whence came the great ballads and epic stories of Men.
Seldom did he go to the councils of the Valar, living apart from the others, who still dwelled in Manwe's hall, upon Oiolosse within the uttermost tower of Taniquetil. Ulmo kept his ancient watery domain separate. From here he watched all, he knew all. And he knew that in this did Manwe and Varda depend on him, for in his comings and goings he perceived many things that were kept from the other two.
Long had Ulmo watched the shadow of the Encircling Seas well beyond the Enchanted Isles which were no longer a part of the world. Small had this shadow been once and grown in strength it had in the short space of three hundred years.
Ulmo did not believe his brothers had seen this shadow yet. Or perhaps they had perceived it and thought it naught but a wandering specter left from Ungoliant's passing.
He too had once thought this to be true.
Until the shadow had loomed beyond the southern lands of the Pelori Mountains in Aman. There it had come out of the southern seas and now walked the land. Even his herald, Osse, had seen this. How could Manwe not have seen? Or Varda, his spouse, missed it also?
A glimmer of light came from the drop of water he now held in his golden hand and he watched it carefully.
Leaning his glowing face closer to the droplet, Ulmo whispered, "Aiya, nenya vaire. Tana nin."
Softly, he blew upon the delicate droplet and watched it shudder and at once it revealed the secrets he and his brothers, millions of drops like himself, carried within.
Ulmo watched silently, as the unfolding images within the drop began to unfold. When the droplet had no more to reveal, Ulmo smiled and nodded a silent thank you. Gently, the drop lost its shape and was absored into Ulmo's hand.
The mighty Vala sat back upon his coral throne and pondered. Long had his voice been silent in Aman and now he realized the message must go forth. Not from Osse, whom the mariners still distrusted, but from his own lips.
In moments, Ulmo wielded the great white sea shells that he called the Ulumari. Raising these to his lips, he blew the first notes of alarm ever heard in Arda and Aman since the passing of the Ring Bearers to the West.

High atop Taniquetil, Varda and Manwe listened to Ulmo's message.
Manwe, Lord of the World, brotho Meo Melkor and beloved of Illuvatar, stood silently, his head turned toward the Encircling Seas beyond Tol Eressea. His raiment was of mithril and it shone with golden light. His face was fair to behold and his eyes were gentle in laughter and terrible in anger.
Understanding, Manwe turned his glowing eyes to the southern pass of the Pelori Mountains and watched for long moments. Likewise, Arda listened attentively.
In a moment, Ulmo's warning broke off and Varda spoke, "Long have I listened to this shadow beast but now it comes with a different intent, husband."
Manwe's glittering eyes turned to his beloved spouse and in her face he saw the light of Illuvatar. Mightier than he was she, he knew, for it had been she whom Melkor had truly feared. Special was she in the sight of Illuvatar for when the stars were made in that exact moment did the Elves awaken to their light. It is for this reason that they loved her and called her Elbereth, sweet Queen of the Stars. But she was the queen of his heart, Manwe thought with fondness and knew her words carried truth.
"What do you hear?" he asked her.
Varda stood, lovely in a raiment of living starlight, and Manwe watched the dancing sparkles shimmer, wane and dim, to ebb and grow again upon her clothing. Her hair was a glow of silver moonlight and it flowed past her shoulders. None who saw Varda failed to be captivated.
Varda smiled, "Many things. Many hearts." Her star-kissed eyes sparkled upon Manwe's countenance. "Much must be undone before we can make things aright again."
Understanding, Manwe's keen gaze fastened once more upon the darkened areas beyond the Pelori. There, to the South, lay the ancient lands of Avathar. This place had once been the home of Ungoliant and other creatures which had roamed Aman long before the coming of the Valar. His eyes pierced the gloom and he looked with interest.
"A new tree from the First Born has awakened and made a home there." His comment was quiet.
Varda turned her silver eyes and looked. Although she did not possess her husband's keen eyes, since her skill was in listening, shuld uld still perceive the shapes to which Manwe referred.
"Indeed, they have." Was her only comment.
"Have you perceived them before, Varda?"
"Nay, husband, I have not heard their song until now."
Manwe frowned, "Illuvatar has kept them from us."
Varda did not reply.
"They have no shadow in their hearts." Manwe continued to watch the e bey beyond the Pelori in the southernmost region of the Avathar.
"But they dwell in darkness, for the sun n'eer shines but for more than a brief moment of time, and the light of the stars casts not away the gloom. They are unuhuine-quendi." Manwe's features were sad.
Varda looked upon her husband's face, "If you but wish it, I will seek Earendil and shall Vingilot sail high over their skies each night and the light of the stars shall come to their lands."
Manwe smiled and turned to Varda, "Beloved, dare we change the course of what should be? These unuhuine-quendi have awakened within the darkness. But there is no shadow in their hearts. They are like unto children. We must watch and be ever vigilant."
"Do we seek them out, husband?" Varda asked, watching her husband's face intently.
Manwe's golden glow shifted and flared slightly, "Nay, we must be certain of Illuvatar's will."
Varda smiled and listened, her silver eyes distant, "They call upon Osse." Her eyes turned back to the darkned land. "They seek his counsel and pray to an end to storms." Her husband was right, she thought. They were like children.
Manwe nodded, "And they shall have it, for though we remember his ancient treachery, Ulmo forgives him still and naught but the innocent forget Osse's mighty storms."
Manwe's eyes darkened in memory of the time when Osse had betrayed them and sided with Morgoth. His treachery discovered, Ulmo had forgiven him upon his repentance and had allowed the Maia to return to the fold of the Valar. But Manwe had not forgotten and neither had the mariners of the Quendi who mistrusted the Maia and his tempers.
Most often the terrible squalls and storms that wrecked ships and destroyed coastlines came from Osse's fits. On Aman they were more subdued and he well knew to keep his fits far from Manwe. But on Arda, Manwe fully knew that it was Osse's tantrums which brought the fierce storms upon the shores of the world. Long had Manwe counseled Ulmo to reconsider, but his brother still saw redemption in the Maia and still found light within the Maia's heart.
Sighing, Manwe stood back and spoke. "Let us watch this shadow creature and awaken our brothers and sisters to it. It draws near these new-found unuhuine-quendi, but it is a p a part of them. Mayhap the creature is naught but a fleeting memory of Ungoliant." His eyes watched the darkened lands south of the Pelori. "Mayhap not."
Manwe turned his bright eyes toward his spouse. He saw she watched him with a gentle smile.
"Have you news from your Watcher?"
Varda shifted her silver gaze toward the waters of the bay beyond Alqualonde. "Nay, but he watches still."
Manwe followed Varda's gaze and silence came between them for a short while as they watched and listened.
Varda drew close to her spouse, "Although he is true and watches, he can do no more for now. Husband, mayhap Aulë can discover what this creature is, for he can come and go deep within the land and listen to it. If there are creatures in Avathar we know nothing of, then Aulë may discover what it is."
Manwe thought for a moment. "And yet these new quendi were kept from us, wife." His eyes shifted to Varda's shinning face. "They were awakened into Aman and we knew not of it 'till now. That is the will of Eru and we shall not defy it. Whatever this means, we shall wait upon his grace."
Manwe nodded, "Come, wife and queen. A council shall be called."
And so a council was called in the Halls of Manwe and long did the Valar debate the message from Ulmo and Manwe's discovery. Lorien, keeper of dreams, explained he had discovered a new consciousness and had not found the source. He promised to delve into the dreams of the unuhuine-quendi as they had come to be called by the Valar. Mandos, he who kept the souls of elves deep within his glittering halls revealed unsettling news: slowly were the feär of some quendi disappearing from his domain. What were the fates of these none knew, not even Mandos who often had the ear of Illuvatar. Long did the Valar ponder upon these matters and none an answer had. But when their council was ended each was given a task and they would meet once more to decide the meanings of these strange events and the fate of the elves who had never before been seen in the Ung Lng Lands.
Then they turned their attention to the shadow creature of which Ulmo had warned. None of the Valar knew of its existance and this greatly troubled them for they all knew that the dark lands south of Aman had long been the home of creatures far older than themselves. If Ungoliant had herself been bred there, what other things could also be roaming freely? And where these unuhuine-quendi in danger?
Away from the council came the Valar, each tasked with a discovery. Much happened quickly in Manwe's Halls, a thing unheard of since the time of the War of the Rings.
Then did Manwe privately seek the counsel of Illuvatar.
But the answer that came perplexed the great Vala, for all he perceived in the mighty winds was, "Help them. Bring them to the light."
