Thranduil rose with a muttered curse, wincing as his well-used body protested the early morning movements. A wealth of vivid bruises covered his hips and chest, and he felt sure his throat was likewise adorned. A flash of golden hair and ivory skin showed the whereabouts of his guest, and the woodland prince slipped into his own robe before grabbing a velvety throw for the admittedly glorious elf who stood on the balcony, bare as a babe.
The dawn sky burst into brilliant color, azure streaked with wisps of pink and gold, and still Glorfindel stood silently, the cool air caressing his bare skin. Only when Thranduil wrapped his shoulders in a swath of soft warmth – welcome, even to one so impervious to cold as the reborn Balrog-slayer – did he speak. “I will miss this.”
The prince did not pretend to misunderstand. “As will I. And yet...”
Glorfindel smiled warmly. “You are an elf besotted. I am happy for you, mellonen. Will you tell me of this lucky one?”
“Miluien,” Thranduil sighed, as though the name alone invoked the gods. “Her name is Miluien, and she touches my soul, though we have not spoken of it. I see forever in her, gwadoren.”
“Then the Valar grant you your desire,” Glorfindel answered, a chill of foreboding streaking down his spine. “Seek her out and cherish every moment.”
Thranduil looked at his companion curiously, but did not question the cryptic remark. “And you, mellonen? Is there none you would cherish forever?”
Unbidden, a vision of sparkling indigo eyes danced in Glorfindel’s head, as a fierce warmth flooded his heart. A gentle smile curled the Balrog-slayer’s lips as he met his friend’s questioning gaze. “Mayhap there is.”
