11. On the River
“Never
before have we clad strangers in the garb of our own people.” Celeborn was giving the Company his farewell
from Lothlorien. “May these cloaks help
shield you from unfriendly eyes.”
Earlier,
the Company had been told that they would leave Lothlorien
by boat, that the next part of their journey would be
on the river. They had been escorted
down to the river and, with the assistance of the Lothlorien
elves, they had packed up the boats with supplies and
more arrows for Legolas. Aragorn took
Frodo and Sam in his boat, Boromir was happy to have Merry and Pippin in his
and Legolas had the Countess and Gimli in his, best able to carry a heavier
load as he was so light himself.
The
Countess had wanted to stay with the boats as Galadriel presented her gifts and
made her farewells to the Company but Legolas had insisted that she stand with
him. Uneasy at being in Galadriel’s
presence, feeling unable to face her, she kept her eyes to the ground.
“Look
at me, Lady,” said Galadriel gently.
The
Countess looked up and into Galadriel’s eyes.
She saw no condemnation, no disgust, no
fear. Only acceptance
and compassion. So moved by the
Lady’s grace, if the Countess could have wept, she would have done so. Galadriel’s gift to the Countess was a sword
and long knife held by a leather belt, “To replace the blade of light you
sacrificed in Moria.” They were covered
in elvish script.
The
Countess smiled at Galadriel, hoping her gratitude showed in it. “Thank you, my Lady,” she said softly. “They are beautiful.”
“Take
care of them,” Galadriel smiled. “They
have served me well.” She turned next to
Legolas.
And
on down the line she gave her gifts, taking Aragorn away to talk to him for a
while. Then the gifts given, they
stepped into their boats and were on their way downstream.
They
hadn’t seen what Gimli had received but he seemed to have gotten over his
dislike and distrust of the elves in a very short time. The Countess knew how Gimli felt; she felt
admiration, respect and gratitude for Galadriel’s grace. Legolas asked what his gift from the Lady had
been; Gimli told him and then sighed and was silent for a long time.
Later,
as the boats were coming out of the shaded valley into the sunny main riverway, she covered herself with her cloak to shield her
from the sun. She heard Gimli ask
Legolas “What’s the Elvish for most beautiful of creatures?”
They
stayed on the river all day, not stopping for the night until well after dark; it
was still very light as the moon was still full. Legolas’s uneasy mood had been caught by all
in the Company and was only increased after Aragorn told them of the warning by
Celeborn of an additional threat.
The
Countess and Legolas left the others and walked up the ridge, away from the
river, into the forest. Neither of them
hungry for dinner, they walked through the woods; they still found nothing to
indicate any immediate danger and Legolas’s unease decreased a bit. He took her hand, raised it to his lips and
kissed it. “We must be quiet. It may be some time before we can join
ourselves.” He sat under a tree and
looked up at her. “I am sorry, Love.”
She
looked up into the forest, shrugged and then smiled at him. “I feel it too but that threat is far away
and you and I are here now,” she said and put her hands to her cloak’s
fastening.
He
said “No Love. Leave that on.” He smiled and said “But take
everything else off.”
She
removed all of her clothing except for her cloak and then walked over to
Legolas who had undone his leggings and freed himself. She straddled him and quickly inserted him
into her and she began rocking over him.
For
once glad of her need for quick release, Legolas let her take the lead; when he
felt her tensing, approaching her climax, he rolled over onto her. He clapped his hand over her mouth to prevent
her from crying out and buried his face in the crook of her neck and shoulder
to muffle his own moans in release.
After a few moments’ rest, she moved to get up from him; he tightened
his arms around her and rolled onto his back, keeping her close on him. “One moment, Love. Stay on me,” he whispered. “Let me be your bed for a while.” He pulled her cloak over her, covering them
both.
She
closed her eyes and smiled in her happiness, listening to his heart beat.
Legolas
stared up into the trees for a while, then asked
quietly, “Orenin, is there no way for you to be freed of this curse?”
“No,”
she answered in a low voice.
He
just waited. Did she think he could not
hear the lie in her voice? Even in only
the one word?
She
sighed and lifted herself up to look at him.
“I’ve heard that there is a way.
But the sacrifice is too great, Legolas.” The death of one she loved more than her
life, the life she had given away her soul for?
Just to be free of the curse? “I
would not pay that price. Even to walk
without fear in the sun again.” She put
her head back down to his chest to listen to his heart beat.
Some
little time later, though lost in thought, Legolas heard Aragorn’s
approach. Discreetly keeping his
distance, Aragorn said “It might be wiser if you came back down to the
river.” Legolas raised his hand in
acknowledgement and Aragorn left them.
Legolas
held Orenin for a while, stroking her hair, waiting for Aragorn to be far
enough away, then said “Love, we should go back to the camp.”
She
sighed. “So soon?” she asked, but got up
from him and they dressed. When they had
finished, she held out her hand to him.
He took her hand in his and they walked down to the river to the others.
The
next day passed quietly enough; they knew they were at the end of their part on
the river when they passed under two great statues. Already they were at the end of their time of
relative safety of the river. They
beached the boats. “We cross the lake at
nightfall,” Aragorn announced, “hide the boats and continue on foot. We approach Mordor from the North.”
“Oh
yes?” asked Gimli. “Just
a simple matter of finding our way through Emyn Muir, an impassable labyrinth
of razor sharp rocks. And after
that, it gets even better! A festering,
stinking marshland as far as the eye can see.”
“That
is our road,” answered Aragorn calmly.
“I suggest you take some rest and recover your strength, Master
Dwarf.”
“Recover
my…!?!” sputtered Gimli.
The
Countess and Legolas had been staring up the riverbank, into the forest; he
turned and walked over to Aragorn. “We
should leave now,” he whispered.
“No,”
said Aragorn. “Orcs patrol the eastern
shore. We must wait for cover of
darkness.”
“It
is not the Eastern shore that worries me,”
said Legolas. “A shadow and a threat has been growing in my mind.
Something draws near. I can feel
it.”
Before
Aragorn could reply Merry who had come out of the forest with some firewood,
looked around the campsite, dropped the wood he carried and asked “Where’s
Frodo?”
They
all looked around the camp but Frodo was nowhere to be seen. Fear flared in Aragorn, and then suspicion,
when he looked around the clearing and could not see Boromir either.
Sam
had noticed that too and shouted “We must try and find him at once. Come on!”
“Wait
a moment!” cried Aragorn. “We must
divide up into pairs, and arrange – here, hold on! Wait!’
It
was no good. They took no notice of
him. They all scattered to look for
Frodo and Boromir, not daring to call out for either of them, afraid of what
they would find, and even more afraid of not finding anything.
“Orenin,
do not leave me,” Legolas said. “Do not
go to Mordor without me,” and ran off into the forest after Sam and Aragorn.
She
was puzzled at that but said to herself “I wouldn’t leave you Love,” before
running up into the forest from the shore with Gimli and the other hobbits.
