Now that Lindir has learned the truth to what happened in the past, he must make a decision on what he will do. Can he risk a chance at love again?
Third Age, 109, Imladris
It was early in the morning when Lindir opened his eyes. The sun was just beginning to rise and he could hear the birds twittering outside the closed and curtained window. The room felt warm and stuffy, a surprise compared to the freezing cold he felt yesterday. He slowly stretched and turned his head, looking to find a healer to open the curtain and let in some fresh air. Nothing sounded nicer than a deep breath of the soothing cool air. A tall, cold glass of water did come in at a close second. What he saw instead caught his breath in his throat. His muscles tensed momentarily at years a of pent up fears and distressing memories come to life, until he gradually remembered the visit and apology he received last night. He really hoped that that was what happened last night, he hoped that was reality and not a dream, because there stood Thranduil in front of him at the present. Frozen in place, Lindir followed the regal elf with his eyes as he approached and gently sat beside him on the bed. The golden King reached his hand out to run down Lindir’s silky hair in an attempt to soothe, however, Lindir instinctively flinched away. The sadness and pain at that move that shone in Thranduil’s eyes made Lindir feel a twinge of guilt. Thranduil then rested his hand beside Lindir’s on the bed, a hair's breadth away from fingers touching, but not quite there.
Surprise, fear, frustration, exhaustion, anger, a nudge of joy deep inside, confusion and a myriad of other emotions and feelings washed over Lindir. He did his best not to overreact, however he could not stop his shaking. This time Thranduil did reach over and cover Lindir’s hand with his. Lindir did not draw his hand away, although his first instinct was to withdraw. Thranduil’s hand on his felt familiar and comfortable and suddenly Lindir was choking back a sob at the memories of what used to be. Thranduil gently began to rub and caress the hand in his, trying to sooth Lindir. Lindir fought to remain still. Through every thing that happened, he still could not bear to see the pain in his former lovers eyes when he flinched or pulled away. This was difficult for Thranduil as well. Seeing the one he loved, and still loves, was difficult, especially when he had ruined it all, thrown away a perfect relationship in favor of falling into the darkness of his grief and into the malicious web of lies and deceptions of others. There was nothing he could do to change the past, however, he was determined to give Lindir the truth and whatever vindication he felt necessary. Now that Thranduil was aware of the plotting taking place behind his back, he vowed to put an end to it and never again let it hurt the two he loved most in the world ever again, his son and Lindir.
Lindir was still too overcome and shocked to say anything, so Thranduil began the conversation with a bit trepidation. Right away, the first thing Thranduil did was reassure Lindir that nothing that happened in the past or present was his fault. Every accusation and degradation was a falsehood conjured up from pain and deception. He assured the frail ellon laying before him, that what went wrong was caused by Thranduil’s own weaknesses and the manipulations of others. He let Lindir know that Lindir would lead the way of their further communication and relations after he explained what had happened. If Lindir wished to never speak to him or see him again, then that would be painful but Thranduil would comply. Gathering a deep breath, Thranduil started his story, beginning with the birth of his soon to be former wife, when the manipulations really began in full swing.
Even before the birth of Nostar’s daughter, Erdolliel, Thranduil’s father, the King had pressured Thranduil at times to look beyond his relationship with Lindir to one of higher rank, one that could produce heirs. While he never rejected Lindir or directly meddled in his sons relationship, the King quite often did get in arguments with his son in regards to finding a long term relationship that would carry on noble bloodlines. Those nights Thraduil would come to bed with Lindir with frustration or worry in eyes and demeanor, those arguments with his father were the cause. After Nostar’s wife gave birth to an iel, Erdolliel, Nostar began to put a bug in Oropher’s ear constantly about arranging a marriage between Thranduil and Erdolliel when she came of age, as Nostar was the highest ranking noble in the Greenwood outside of the royal family. The more Nostar pushed this arrangement, the more Oropher encouraged his son to lay aside his relationship with Lindir. At two points he had threatened to contract an arrangement, despite Thranduil’s protests. In the end, the King did not follow through, as Thranduil threatened to leave Greenwood completely if Oropher attempted to dictate his life in that manner. He did make it known to Thranduil, however, that his greatest wish was to see Thranduil wed to a well bred lady and to have grandchildren to continue the bloodline and rule of the realm. This fleeting wish had a great impact on Thranduil later when he did marry. He blamed his father’s death partially on himself and felt the need to make reparations to him. The fact that his mother faded soon after his father’s death just enforced the need for a royal family even more so.
Lindir became wide eyed at just hearing the beginning of the tale. While he had always guessed that Oropher would have preferred a female for his son, he did not realize the extent. Thranduil had always shielded him from that aspect of politics and had always reassured him of his love during the time of their relationships. Oropher, while not always welcoming, had at least treated Lindir civilly in the centuries they were together. He continued on listening to Thranduil’s tale in a state of disbelief.
During the years leading to the war, Nostar continued to plot on how to grab more power and indoctrinated Erdolliel in his manipulative quest for power from a young age on. He continued to encourage an arranged marriage throughout the years. Thranduil found that Nostar had been involved in dark dealings with evil creatures flourishing in the dark corners of the forest. While he could not prove it, Thraduil felt that Nostar had something to do with the death of Lindir’s parents, hoping the grief would drag Lindir off to Námo’s Halls as well. Thranduil had begun to piece together much of this critical information together when he became suspicious of Nostar weeks ago after the poisoning of his son, meant for Thranduil. Investigations and interviews made by a trusted few close to Thranduil brought much to light that had once been unknown to Thranduil. If only he had seen as much before...
Later on, with the Woodland Realm’s involvement in the war, Nostar found the perfect opportunity to make his first big power move in his play for ultimate power. He switched an important missive concerning the time and placement of attack at the Battle of Dagorlad. All day the various factions of elves, men and dwarves had debated their plans, and when decisions were finalized, Nostar sent Lindir with the note that changed the Greenwood’s position and timing in the attack leading to the massacre of the army as well as death of King Oropher. The plan went better than Nostar had hoped. He had hoped to blame Lindir for the note, saying Lindir was angry because he had been spying and heard the ongoing discussions of an arranged marriage, that in reality he knew nothing of. Not only did he manage to spill lies into Thranduil’s ears regarding Lindir’s true role (which was simply a messenger from Nostar to Oropher with no knowledge as to what the missive contained) and his “envious nature,” he had also taken out the King through his death caused in battle. In his grief over the death of his father, and the fact Thranduil had seen Lindir handing his father the missive, he had allowed himself to be deceived by Nostar’s duplicitous ways.
Overcome by his grief and furious with the belief that Lindir had betrayed him, that was when Thranduil sundered their relationship and banished Lindir from his side and his home, sending him out to seek his death. Perhaps had his mind not been so crowded in grief at his father’s death and despair over the death toll his warriors suffered, he would have more clearly seen through the deceit. Never before had Lindir been envious or petty in their relationship. In fact, he had been quite understanding as far as court politics went and what that meant for them. He never once complained about not making their relationship public. Thranduil’s pain, however, coupled by the scheming of one that was supposed to support and protect the royal family, his father's chief advisor for Valar’s sake, clouded his mind and he ended up decimating Lindir’s heart in the process, sending him away to nothing with nothing.
So very grateful Thranduil was that Erestor found Lindir and took him in. Put him back together. Lindir could not believe what he was hearing. Like Thranduil at the time, he had no idea these lies and deceptions were taking place behind his back. His heart ached for all that Thranduil had suffered, and continued to, however he was still very angry that Thranduil abandoned all trust in him at that time. He never gave Lindir a chance to explain. Lindir had feared for his life on that terrible day, Thranduil has shook, choked and struck him. There had been nothing else for him to do but to flee with the clothes on his back and single book, his journal in hand. Lindir felt much regret he had never got an opportunity to defend himself. Perhaps they could have uncovered Nostar’s deceitful nature long ago, instead of more than a century later and saved them from further exploitation and heartbreak.
After the loss of his father, the death of so many warriors and the “betrayal” of his beloved, Thranduil became hardened and moody and cold. He shut his kingdom and himself away after returning from the war, masking his pain away in isolation. Feeling guilty for his father’s death and in turn his mother’s, and at the time thinking the very person his father did not want him to have a relationship caused his very death, Thranduil sought to carry out the one wish of his father’s he could yet fulfill. With strong encouragement from many advisors, he wed Erdolliel. It was not a joining of love, just a union of power. Erdolliel, already indoctrinated in her father’s bid for ultimate power and bitter at her husband’s lack of warmth toward her, worked with Nostar to create weakness and strife in the court. Their last bid for advancement had gone very wrong, however and Legolas had gotten poisoned. Thankfully he survived without too many complications, however, this had tipped Thranduil off that something was going on and he uncovered a whole mess of complications.
Ever since his suspicions arose he investigated the best he could into their past, present and intentioned future moves to hopefully convict them and be rid of them with Elrond’s assistance. When Thranduil finished his tale and informed Lindir that Elrond and Glorfindel would help investigate and punish all who were involved Lindirs’s mind swirled with emotion and confusion. He was mentally exhausted. He closed his eyes and whispered to Thranduil, “This is much to take in. I do not know how to respond to all I have learned. I need some time to think. Seas.”
Thranduil nodded his head. While disappointed he was not getting much response from the ailing elf, he understood. Thranduil himself needed time to comprehend all he had learned today. Thranduil certainly did when he began to piece things together. Thranduil nodded and said, “Yes, I understand. May I come see you again tomorrow?”
Lindir’s mind whirling murmured in a small dazed voice, “This is just all so much. I will send somebody for you when I am ready to speak with you again.” With that, Thraduil stood, squeezed Lindir’s hand and exited the healing room.
