“G-G-G-Glorfindel!” Erestor exclaimed, hands clasped to his chest in surprise. “Wh-Wh- What are you doing here?” he squeaked, voice shaky with both fear and relief. Erestor thought he had slipped away unnoticed from his healing room earlier, but evidently he had been mistaken. He really must be exhausted and unwell if he could not sense that he had been followed or that someone had been waiting patiently for him in the still and silent darkness of his room. Apparently Glorfindel had stationed himself outside of Erestor’s healing room earlier in the day, knowing Erestor might try and make a break for it. He knew that Erestor could not stand the cold and sterile rooms of the Halls of Healing. Glorfindel followed Erestor to make sure that he was not attempting to sneak back to his office to try and work . When he saw that Erestor intended to bathe and then change into his sleeping clothes, he decided to wait for Erestor in his rooms. Until he was certain that Erestor was in his bed, sleeping soundly, Glorfindel did not trust that he wouldn’t try to go to his office to either do some more work there or swipe some documents to bring back to his chamber.
Erestor sat, slumped on his bed, eyes drooping with exhaustion as he listened to Glorfindel explain his reasoning for following Erestor and hiding out in his darkened room. Too tired to argue with Glorfindel about being put under guard and about why he should be allowed to at least grab some basic work to bring back with him, Erestor slid himself under the comforter, and made to go to sleep, a silent dismissal hanging heavy in the air fraught with implication that Glorfindel should leave now. Several moments passed by, with Erestor’s eyes growing heavier and heavier by the second, but Glorfindel still hadn’t left.
“You can go now,” Erestor murmured from within a cocoon of blankets. “I’m not going anywhere for tonight,” he added, punctuated with a big yawn at the end.
“Not going to happen,” growled Glorfindel.
Erestor peeked out from his nest of blankets at Glorfindel’s gruff reply. Glorfindel remained sitting stone-faced in the chair. The only difference now being that he looked settled in to stay for a good, long while. He had the chair reclined back and his feet propped up and resting on the foot stool. The expression on his face declared he would heed no arguments. Erestor sighed, not particularly thrilled with the turn of events, but also far too tired to argue or demand the Glorfindel vacate the space. Assuming Glorfindel had had his say, Erestor closed his eyes and once again began to drift toward the sweet siren's call of sleep.
Suddenly, Glorfindel’s low voice cut through the silent tension that had been building in the air. “You scared me today…So badly Erestor… I thought I was going to lose you.” Taking a second to gather himself, Glorfindel continued on with a new edge of trembling and tears in his voice. “I am not leaving these rooms. I will not leave you to be on your own right now. I know you Erestor, the second you gather a fraction of strength back, you will be back at it, working yourself to another breakdown, or worse, fading. So no, I will not leave. I am staying to be sure you can get some rest and recover.”
Erestor, stunned and not knowing what to say regarding this outburst, simply sobbed out one word, “Glorfindel…,” choking off any others. Several seconds passed and Erestor did not continue. He was trying so hard to stop the tears from coming. From shouting shameful confessions and angry words that he would not be able to take back once said. Pressing his face tightly into his pillow, Erestor focused all his effort on swallowing down the sobs and cries of pain and locking away all the angry and revealing words that wanted to spill out from where they had been caged for so long inside of him. He couldn’t, he wouldn’t let Glorfindel see him cry and be so vulnerable again. After how much he had hurt and betrayed their friendship and put those cracked Erestor’s heart, Erestor refused to open himself up again. If he did, all his years of pent up and pushed back feelings would come tumbling out. He would expose all the weak and soft parts of himself and then after that the venomous anger would come. He would end up saying things simply to try and hurt Glorfindel as badly as he had hurt Erestor. Things that despite what happened, would be cruel and spiteful and would dredge up painful memories of the past. He wouldn’t do that to the person that he loved, or at least thought he could love at one point. Even through all of the betrayed feelings and anger and confusion and breaking down, Erestor still cared about Glorfindel deep down inside. Ugh, he was such a mess. He didn’t know what to think or how to feel in this maelstrom of feelings and emotions.
Waiting for Erestor to continue after he had choked out Glorfindel’s name in that painfully strangled voice, Glorfindel realized a short time later that Erestor wasn't going to carry on with his statement. In fact, he could see the outline of the blankets cocooning his slender body trembling. So instead of waiting for words that would never come as Erestor was currently choking them down, Glorfindel decided to say some words of his own.
“I’ve seen you struggling, and fighting and failing and hurting so hard these past weeks, Erestor, and it hurts my heart. I’ve tried every way I know to reach out to you, but you won’t let me in. You won’t share your burdens. You lock away your deepest feelings and deprive yourself of happiness for no reason. It feels like you are punishing yourself, for what, I don’t know. It must be for some self imagined crimes, because you are the most genuine, generous and giving elf there is. You always put others before yourself and you work ceaselessly for the ones you love. Despite having a past mired in the madness and sins of others, you overcame the chains put in place and broke free of that world. You stayed true to yourself and never stepped on others to make your place in this world.”
Glorfindel saw the trembling still, a sign that his words were reaching Erestor. He stood and approached the lump of blanket and elf on the bed, sitting next to Erestor and placing a gentle hand meant to comfort on Erestor's side. He continued, “As of lately you won’t even look at me, you act like you despise me at times. But that can’t be, not my Erestor. My Erestor is loving and caring and kind. You are the dearest person in my life and I care so much about you.” Wiping a tear from his eye, Glorfindel went on. “Whatever it is that has been beating you down, we will confront it and we will beat it down together. I will show you that you are worthy of love and respect and to be heard and will make you see how important to everyone you are. You’re my everything Erestor. I’m with you through thick and thin. Please trust me. Please allow me in and I will help pick you up and shoulder your burdens.”
Wanting Erestor to really think through all he had just said, Glorfindel lay gently beside Erestor and gathered him in his arms, stroking his hair, rocking him gently to sleep and whispering to him words of love and encouragement. Erestor could hardly believe what he just heard from Glorfindel. It sounded almost like a confession of love. His head spun with a mix of emotions and feelings. This couldn’t be real could it? He had spent so long wanting this and thinking it was never his to be had. Too weak and fatigued to fight his feelings anymore, Erestor allowed Glorfindel to gently rock him to sleep, falling asleep to words of whispered love and devotion. They could figure things out once Erestor got some well needed rest.
