As Nianna rode into the main courtyard of Imladris, her cries brought several elves running. Once FirGael halted, Nianna carefully dismounted while holding Frodo’s unconscious body up on the saddle. As one of the elvrabbrabbed the reins of her steed, she gathered the small hobbit in her arms and walked swiftly towards the stairway. As she passed one of the elves, she curtly requested, [“Have Lord Elrond meet me in the healer’s room, immediately.”]. Nianna knew she was being slightly rude but at the moment, Frodo’s life was more important than any civility.
She climbed the stairs and walked swiftly down the hallway that led to the room that was set aside for the sick and injured. She entered the large room and immediately went to the bed. Laying Frodo down in the middle of the bed, she gently pushed back the sweat soaked bangs from the pale face. Before she could do more, Lord Elrond entered the airy room, followed closely by Mithrandir.
There was no time for Nianna to celebrate Mithrandir’s safety and return to health when the attention shifted to Frodo as he moaned softly. She stood up, allowing Lord Elrond to take her place next to the hobbit.
[“What has happened?”], Lord Elrond said as he sat next to the inert body of the hobbit.
[“The Nazgul attacked us, four days ago. Frodo was stabbed by one of their blades.”], she said quickly as Mithrandir walked towards the bed and stood next to her.
Lord Elrond looked at the wound and than raised the lids of Frodo’s eyes. Noting the colorless iris, he said, [“He is slipping into the Shadow World, there may be little we can do.”]
nna’nna’s eyes widened and her breathing pitched as she saidNo!”No!”]. Nianna was filled with panic over the fate of the little hobbit.
Mithrandir grabbed Nianna’s arm gently but firmly and guided her towards the door, [“You have done all you can, Nianna. Lord Elrond and I will do our best to help Frodo.”]
Nianna was still slightly stunned over the possible loss of the hobbit and never took her eyes off of Frodo as Mithrandir dragged her to the door. He pushed Nianna through the threshold and released her. Before Mithrandir could close the door, she was finally able to remove her eyes from the body on the bed. As her teary eyes met the eyes of the Istari, Mithrandir smiled gently at the she-elf, [“Do not lose faith, Nianna, all will turn out as it was meant to be.”] With his cryptic message hanging in the still air, he gently closed the door.
Nianna quickly stepped back, stunned as the grain of the wood encompassed her view. Tilting an ear towards the voices inside, she could not make out the whispered conversation between the occupants of the room. Her only relief is that not one but two powerful immortals were in the room with Frodo and they would do everything they can to help the little hobbit.
Realizing that there was no more that she could do for Frodo, Nianna glanced down the corridor and began walking back towards the main kitchen. Nianna’s thoughts moved towards the other t hob hobbits and the human that were now on the road towards Imladris.
The Nazgul may have been deterred for a moment but it has been shown that they were able to regroup quickly and may now set their sights on the remaining members of her party. She placed her worries for Frodo aside and began to mentally prepare for another journey in search of them.
She would need to collect supplies and a fresh horse, knowing that FirGael would not be up to another journey until he was well and truly rested. Nianna ignored her own body’s weariness and pushed it aside. She would rest after the hobbits and Estel were safely in Imladris.
Nianna walked down a flight a stairs, thinking of the coming trip, planning on leaving within the next hour. She was so lost in her preparatory thoughts, she almost ran into a familiar figure.
As she stepped back to avoid colliding into the figure, she smiled tiredly, [“Arwen.”], she greeted.
The smile was returned with more enthusiasm, [“Nianna.”].
The two old friends embraced and as Arwen pulled away, [“I felt the disturbance of the Bruinen. What has happened?”]
The older she-elf told an abridged version of the events leading up to her current arrival at Imladris. As the two elves walked towards the kitchens, Nianna continued to explain her current plans to go back into the wild to find the missing members of her party.
Arwen gently stopped her, [“Nianna, you are exhausted. I have already seen FirGael who is happily resting in our finest stables. Lord Elrond and Mithrandir will do all they can to help the little one. And you do not need to go out, I will take a small party and search for Estel and the hobbits. You need your rest.”]
Nianna could not deny the fact that her body was exhausted but she felt the need to continue until everyone was safe within the boundaries of Imladris.
Before Nianna could argue, Arwen continued, [“You cannot continue. You will fall ill if you do. What good will you be to the others, to Frodo, if you collapse from exhaustion.”]
Unbeknownst to Nianna, Arwen had already changed their direction. As Nianna blindly followed Arwen’s lead believing that she was being lead to the kitchens to gather foshe she said, [“I will not be able to rest properly until I know they are all safe.”].
Arwen reached a door and slipped inside the r gui guiding the tired she-elf in as well. [“Very well, Nianna.”].
[“These are not the kitchens. These are my rooms.”], Nianna looked around. A puzzled expression proved her tired condition as she glanced around the large room that was usually assigned to her during her stays in Imladris.
[“I will make the necessary preparations for you to go on your journey but you must rest until all is prepared, Nianna. At least the time you do spend here, will refresh you enough to continue on.”], Arwen smiled gently at her.
Nianna looked at the face of the Evenstar and noting the gentle, serene smile and the stubborn gleam in her eyes, she relented. [“Very well, Arwen, I will rest for only a few hours. Thank you for making the preparations necessary for the journey.”]
[“I will do all I can to insure that Estel and the other hobbits arrive safely in Imladris.”], she simply said.
Nianna nodded her head tiredly and walked towards the bathing room to clean the journeys dust off, [“Thank you, Arwen. Your aid is greatly appreciated.”].
Arwen watched as the other elf weaved slightly through the room. She called out to Nianna, [“I will see you soon, Nianna.”]. She walked out of the room and closed the door gently.
Nianna was too tired to notice the slight mischievous gleam in her eyes or the little lift at the corner of Arwen’s lips. She removed her travel clothes, cleaned up and robed herself in a sleeping gown. The large bed seemed to welcome the tired elf as she pulled back the covers and laid down. Before Nianna was aware of what was happening, her eyes closed and fell into a dreamless sleep, a state rarely experienced by elves.

The bed cradled Nianna’s body as she rolled over. As the elf slowly returned to consciousness, she opened her eyes and gazed at the window. The stars twinkled in the dark sky and a gentle night breeze drifted through the open window.
Nianna felt refreshed and gave a small smile at how comfortable she was. Her mind began to replay the events of the last few days and the smile quickly slipped off her face as she sat up in bed.
Once again looking out the window, Nianna realized that it was late. Very late. She quickly threw back the covers and rushed out of bed. Finding a clean set of travel clothes in the dresser, she donned them and was out the door.
As she closed the door to her rooms, she nearly ran into one of the serving elves of Imladris. Before Nianna could apologize, the elf smiled, [“Lady Nianna, The Evenstar has assigned me to see to any of your needs during your stay here at Imladris.”]
Realization dawned for Nianna, [“And where is The Evenstar?”], she asked already suspecting the answer.
[“Arwen has taken a small party to find some lost travelers. I hear that one of their friends is already here but is deathly ill. Is he the small creature that you arrived with.”], the elven maid stated. Nianna nodded in reply. She continued, [“Oh, Lady Arwen has left you a message.”].
Reaching into the pocket of her dress, the young serving maid pulled out a folded parchment and handed it to Nianna.
Nianna grasped the note and noticed the seal of the Evenstar on the wax that sealed it. Before Nianna could break the wax seal, the young elf asked, [“Is there anything I could do for you, Lady Nianna?”]
[“Yes, did Lord Elrond send a message to King Thranduil regarding the Council?”], Nianna asked.
[“Lord Elrond sent the message the day you left. He received word from King Thranduil the same day. He was informed that a party would be leaving the very next day.”], the maid replied.
[“The next day?”], Nianna said worriedly, [“They should have arrived days ago.”]
The young elf gave Nianna a look of deep compassion, [“Lord Elrond and King Thranduil are both waiting for word from the missing party.”]
Nianna was torn. Between the worry for Frodo, the danger that Aragorn and the hobbits may be facing and now the news of the missing Mirkwood party, Nianna’s emotions were in turmoil. It took all of Nianna’s resolve not to breakdown.
[“Is there anything else, milady?”], the maid asked quietly, allowing a moment for Nianna to gather herself.
[“Hmmm,”], slightly distracted Nianna looked up, [“Oh, no, thank you. Have a good night.”]
The lady smiled at Nianna and turned to walk away. Before she could very far, Nianna drew her attention again.
[“Oh, I’m sorry, what is your name?”], Nianna asked.
[“Silmarwen, my lady.”], she replied.
Nianna smiled at the elf, [“Silmarwen, have you heard anything about the ill hobbit?”]
[“Yes, Lord Elrond and Mithrandir are working diligently towards healing the small creature that arrived with you. It may take some time before they will be able to leave the young one.”], she said.
[“Thank you, Silmarwen.”], Nianna said, [“I appreciate all your help. Good night.”]
[“Good night, my lady. Do not hesitate to seek me if you require anything.”], she said.
Nianna smiled sadly and watched the elf walk away before returning her attention to the sealed parchment she held.
She broke the wax seal and unfolded the note left by the Evenstar.
Nianna,
I apologize for the deceit but I felt that it was necessary. Knowing you, you would have continued on this exhausting path until you collapsed. You would have been little help to those you cared about if you became ill due to this. The fact that I was able to easily manipulate you, should be testament to this fact.
Do not worry, I shall do everything in my power to assure the safe arrival of Strider and the three hobbits. I have taken a small party to accompany me and we should return to Imladris by tomorrow afternoon.
Also, do not worry about the Mirkwood party. Knowing their leader, they are perfectly well and will be arriving to Imladris soon.
Rest Nianna, you deserve it.
Arwen
Nianna slowly refolded the note. She could not deny the fact that her body was still extremely tired despite the short rest period. With Arwen off in search of Aragorn and the hobbits, and with Lord Elrond and Mithrandir still occupied in healing Frodo, and no word from Mirkwood; there was nothing more Nianna could do.
She decided to take this opportunity to rest; though try as she might, she doubted she would. She turned back toward her room and as she closed her door, she hoped that tomorrow would bring good news of Frodo and reunions with the endangered travelers.
