Chapter 12
Her eyes fluttered open, wincing at the light that streamed into the room. Feeling a gentle hand stroking the hair on her head, she turned her eyes to see Haldir sitting beside her, a look of concern on his face.
"How are you feeling?" he whispered, his gray eyes soft and filled with compassion.
"Like I've been run over by a truck, er horse," she answered, her throat still sore and raspy. "When did you get here, Haldir?"
"As soon as I heard your call, I went to Celeborn. I knew he was the only one who could confront Galadriel. I have been at your side ever since."
"What call?" She shook her head, thinking she was misunderstanding him. "Ever since? How long have I been out?"
"Three nights. The healers said your wounds were not grievous, but that your mind needed rest to heal properlyP>
"Haldir, what happened after I went to sleep?"
"You do not need to hear this now. You must rest I will not allow you to become upset again," he answered, shaking his head.
"Please don't start in on me with the macho bullshit, Haldir. I need to know what happened," Calla frowned, eyeing Haldir with 'that' look. He didn't understand what 'macho' meant, but he understood very well the look she was giving him. The look that told him she was about to get very stubborn, and very uncooperative.
Sighing, Haldir smiled at her, relieved in a way that she seemed to be returning to her normal state of rebelliousness. "It has been hundreds of years since I have seen Lord Celeborn so angry. He publicly denounced Galadriel's actions, and declared you to be under his protection. I know not what punishment she received at his hands in private, but I do know that it is rumored that she has not been able to sit down since that night!" Haldir chuckled. Growing serious again, he continued, "I do not think anyone, including Galadriel, will risk harming you again. The Lord of the Wood is not known for his mercy when angered."
"Who was the Elf that took me to her?" Calla asked next.
Haldir's eyes darkened, his features scowling. "It was my brother, Orophin. He has always been jealous of both my position and my relationship with the Lady," he spat. Looking at Calla with pleading eyes, Haldir whispered, "I am sorry that one of my own flesh and blood did this to you," He gently touched the bruise over Calla's temple where Orophin's hard fist had connected with it. "He has not been seen these past three nights, but I have Rumil and my wardens scouring the woods for him. I will deal with him personally when he is found."
"He's your brother, Haldir I don't want you to do anything to him that you would regret," Calla said softly, reaching up to stroke his cheek.
"He is no longer a brother of mine, or of Rumil's - Rumil was nearly as upset about what Orophin did as I was."
"Please, Haldir I never had siblings, but I always wanted them. Promise me that you won't do anything rash when he's found."
Seeing the angui loo look on Calla's face, knowing that she felt guilty for coming between the brothers even though none of it was her fault, Haldir bent and softly kissed her lips. "I promise, if it will make you rest easier. Now, do you want to see the surprise I have for you?"
"Surprise? What surprise?"
"Actually, I have two surprises. One is the reason I was not with you when Orophin attacked, and for that I am most sorry, Calla," he replied, looking for a moment as though he thought she might blame him for not being there.
"Haldir, I'm a grown woman - I don't expect or need you to be hovg abg about me every minute of every day."
"I still blame myself. If I had been there, none of this would have happened."
"Bull. If you had been there, you might have gotten hurt, too."
Haldir laughed, waving his hand. "The day Orophin could take me, is the day I lay down and fade."
Calla chuckled softly, then asked, "So what's the surprise?"
Reaching behind him, Haldir pulled out a bundle. Untying the strings that bound it, the package fell open to reveal several lovely dresses. Ranging in color from a deep ruby red to a pale willow green, the dresses were of different materials and trim, and each was more exquisite than the last.
Hesitantly touching the material with a finger, Calla looked up at Haldir questioningly. "This is why you left me alone? You went shopping?"
"I knew you weren't exactly happy with the blue dress or your nightgown, so I thought I would get you something more appropriate to wear to meet The Lady and Lord."
"Haldir, I don't know what to say they are beautiful. Thank you," Calla replied, lifting her hand to the back of his head, drawing him down to her lips for a kiss. Haldir smiled, pleased that his gift was well liked.
"I have another surprise for you - one I didn't know about until this morning, and one I didn't have anything to do with planning," Haldir said cryptically, smiling at her.
"Well, what is it?" Calla asked, curious, and a bit impatient.
He grinned broadly, nodding his head toward the door of the talan. There, framed by the doorway, stood an Elf she had never thought she would see again.
"Legolas? Legolas!" she squealed, trying to rise up from the pallet. Haldir put a hand on her shoulder pushing her back down. She grinned at her surprise visitor, as ame ame to kneel beside the pallet. "What are you doing here?" she asked, grinning at him.
Cupping the side of her face gently with his hand, his sapphire eyes clouded with concern. "I heard you call me."
Looking confused, she glanced from Haldir to Legolas, not understanding his statement in the least. "That's the same thing Haldir said. I didn't call anyone - I couldn't have. I was gagged. And even if I did, Haldir was out shopping somewhere, and you were supposed to be miles and miles from here in Rivendell!"
Legolas frowned, looking up at Haldir. "Have you not spoken with her yet to explain things?"
Haldir shook his head at his friend. "She has just now awakened. I felt it too soon."
"She must be told, Haldir you have let things go on too long as it is."
"Hello I'm right here, you know. Please stop talking about me as if I weren't in the room," Calla huffed, confused and a bit put off by the conversation between the two Elves.
Haldir and Legolas exchanged another glance, nodding at each other, as if a mutual decision had been reached. They each reached for one of Calla's hands, holding them gently in their own.
"I should have told you this days ago, Calla. I think, perhaps, I was afraid of your answer. I have known since Mirkwood, and should have discussed it with you then, but I feared you would reject me," Haldir began, looking at her in a way that made her heart melt.
"I have told you that Elves share pleasures of the flesh whenever two Elves are willing, and feel a desire for each other. What I neglected to tell you is that Elves do not ordinarily fall asleep in each other's arms, unless there is a very strong bond between them."
"Huh? I don't understand, Haldir."
"We are at our most vulnerable when sleep glazes our eyes, Calla. For that reason, sleeping with someone is reserved for only those with whom we have formed a strong attachment. Sleeping in the same room is one thing, done often for convenience, but sleeping in each other's arms is something else entirely."
Calla thought back to Mirkwood, when Haldir had refused to let her have her own room; Haldir waiting for her to leave Thranduil's chamber, rather than going to sleep with someone else; on the road with Legolas when Haldir had pulled her into his arms to sleep while Legolas slept alone on the other side of the fire; that first day in Caras Galadhon, when he asked if she would please share his talan rather than go to one of her own. She realized that not a single night had passed since they had met that she had spent outside the sweet embrace of his arms, aside from the past three nights when she had been under the healer's spell. Even then, he had told her that he had been sitting by her side. Her eyes filled with tears as she came to understand the import of what he was telling her.
"You asked me once if Elves did not fall in love. I told you then that it happened, but was rare. Little One hea heart has claimed you as its own. I knew it in Mirkwood, and should have told you then. For that, I am sorry. But my feelings for you are what enabled me to hear you when you were distressed. Your voice did not call to me your heart did," Haldir whispered, a look of need and fear in his eyes.
Tears began to fall from Calla's eyes, as she looked his his anxious gray eyes. Reaching up, she pulled him into a deep kiss, forgetting for a moment the other Elf who sat patiently at her side.
Breaking the kiss, she followed Haldir's gaze to Legolas, who smiled softly at her. Lifting her hand to his lips, he kissed it, then held it to his heart.
"I have never known anyone like you, Calla. You captivated me from the first moment I saw you in Haldir's room in Mirkwood. I stood back, watching Haldir, knowing he was making clear his claim on you, but wanting you nonetheless. I chose to travel with you because I wanted to be near you for as long as I could. My heart is lost to you it beats only to hear your voice. When I heard your call, I was in Rivendell, and rode hard without rest to reach you."
"Legolas has asked my permission to enter our relationship, Calla. I have given it, but the choice is still yours," Haldir explained, smiling at his friend.
"Can we do that? Is that legal?" Calla asked, dumbfounded by the confessions of the two Elves.
"Of course why wout itt it be?" Haldir countered, smoothing her hair from her forehead.
"It isn't where I come from."
"People seem to be very confused where you come from. They don't even believe in touching each other when there is an attraction."
"Things are just a lot more complicated there. How do you two feel about all this? Haldir, you said you gave your permission, but how would you feel abLegoLegolas sharing our bed?" Calla asked. As tempted as she was to agree imatelately, she was concerned for Haldir's feelings. After all, she knew him longest and best.
Haldir smiled. "Legolas and I have been frequent lovers for centuries, Calla. There is no one I would rather share you with than he."
As if to prove his point, Haldir leaned over Calla and took Legolas' lips in a deep kiss. Legolas opened his mouth, accepting Haldir's soft tongue. Calla's breath began to quicken as she watched her two lovers kiss over head.
Separating, Legolas looked down at Calla, running a finger down her cheek. "What say you, Calla? Will you accept me into your arms along with Haldir?"
Unable to speak, Calla nodded, as tears began to fill her eyes. Never had she thought, when Halfirsfirst threw her over his shoulder and carried her off to Arda, that she would find herself as happy as she was at that moment.
Haldir and Legolas lay down next to Calla, wrapping their arms around her and each other. The three of them cuddled for a long while without speaking. Words were not necessary, since their hearts had already spoken.
It was nearly an hour later when a messenger knocked on the door to the talan, informing Calla that Lord Celeborn wished to see her immediately.
