Tending Elrond's Heart
Chapter Twelve
Players and Slayers
Elladan had managed to corner Merenant just before dinner, securing her promise to allow him to escort her on an after-dinner walk through the gardens. He had a particular garden in mind, one that he knew she probably had not been to before, and one he was most anxious to show to her before Elrohir got the opportunity to do so.
Merenant found herself being whisked off barely having had time to lay down her fork after the meal. Elladan, completely oblivious to the frowns from Elrond, Erestor, Glorfindel, and Elrohir, had been standing behind Merenant's chair, tapping his foot, impatient for her to finish eating. Aware of the looks being thrown at the Elf who stood behind her, Merenant thought it best to leave before any one said something that they might - or more likely, she might - regret.
"Where will you be escorting my ward this evening, Elladan?" Elrond asked, none too pleased with the amount of time his sons both seemed to be lavishing on his ward.
"Just through the gardens, Adar
she likes the gardens," Elladan replied, his hands on the back of Merenant's chair. Looking down at Merenant in an effort to hurry her, he missed Erestor whisper something into Elrond's ear, and the look Elrond then exchanged with Glorfindel.
Rising, she bid all a good night, including Elrond, who nodded back at her. Her feelings were still hurt since Elrond had be steadfastly ignoring her since the Solstice, and Merenant was positive that it was because of something she had said or done. Every time she saw him she felt a physical pain in her chest which always brought the threat of tears to her eyes, although she had managed to keep them in check in the presence of others. The same could not be said when she was alone, either in the garden or her chambers. Crying seemed to have become an oft-repeated pastime with her.
Still, regardless of her feelings of abandonment by Elrond, it was difficult for anyone to remain melancholy in Elladan's presence. His quick wit and solicitous behavior precluded Merenant from dwelling on her hurt feelings, and soon had her smiling as he recounted some or other anecdote of his youth, usually involving a prank of some sort, and always involving Elrohir as the instigator. To hear Elladan tell a tale was to believe that he was always the innocent aggrieved party dragged into mischief by his brother.
Brazenly taking hold of her hand, he held it tightly, leading her well past the House of Healing, away from the center of the city and toward the deeply wooded copse in the shadow of the foothills of the Misty Mountains. The sun was already well into its descent, the stars beginning to twinkle in the velvet expanse of the sky, when he drew her through the wood and into a small clearing. Here, young Elves had planted a garden of sweet smelling flowers, roses, Kingsfoil, lilies, and irises among others, in small evenly laid patches.
Bidding Merenant to sit, Elladan removed a travel pouch from his waist that she had not been aware he had been carrying. Seating himself close beside her, he pulled a small flask of wine and two pewter traveling mugs from the pouch, pouring them each a glass of the dark red liquid.
Sipping her cup, Merenant smiled at the variety of flowers in the well-kept garden. "This is a lovely spot, Elladan, but tell me why was it planted within the wood? I would think not very many would visit here since it is so secluded."
"Sometimes it is nice to be away from prying eyes, Merenant. Still, it is also nice to be surrounded by beauty that is why this garden was planted here in the wood," he answered, draining his cup.
So close to her that she could feel the warmth of his skin on her arm, Merenant tried to nonchalantly move over a couple of inches, but found Elladan scooting over with her. She bit her lip, wondering why he felt the need to be sitting nearly on top of her.
Her answer came when she turned her head to ask him a question, and found his lips upon her own, his hand quickly sliding to the back of her head, pulling her closer.
Putting her hand to his chest, she gently pushed him back, breaking the kiss. "Elladan " she managed to say, quite shocked that he would kiss her without first asking. "I " Again she was cut off by his warm lips sealing themselves to hers once again. Her mouth opened in protest as his hand found her breast, his thumb rubbing her nipple through the thin fabric of her dress. As her mouth opened, his tongue thrust through her lips, his body bending her backwards to lie flat upon the ground.
Pinned beneath his weight, she tried to free her arms enough to push him away, knowing that he must not know that she did not want his attentions, but she couldn't budge them, trapped beneath him as they were. His own hands were busy, one at her breast, the other sliding her skirt up her leg.
Suddenly, his entire weight was lifted off of her, as Elladan seemed to levitate before her widened eyes. The shock on her face at seeing him seemingly floating on top of her was mirrored by the shock in his own. A deep booming voice solved the mystery.
"Inconsiderate Pup! You should be flogged for forcing your attentions on the young Elleth! I may very well take the pleasure of doing the deed myself, you arrogant, insensitive, thoughtless, half-wit! No more control than a bull in heat! Perhaps a month on the fences will cool your ardor!" Glorfindel bellowed, holding Elladan aloft by the scruff of the neck and the seat of his pants. With a mighty heave, he sent the Peredhil twin flying, to land in a bed of not-especially soft lilies, where he landed with an audible grunt.
Before Elladan could recover enough breath to speak, Glorfindel had helped Merenant up from the ground, assured himself that she was unhurt, and was quickly leading her back to Elrond's House.

"A month on the fences! Adar has completely lost his mind, allowing the Slayer to lay such a punishment on me for doing nothing but steal a kiss! Has anyone told them that Merenant is an adult now? She can make her own choices! An entire month on the eastern fences!" Elladan raved, throwing his clothing and other essentials into his leather satchel, preparing to depart the city for the mandated tour of the eastern fences, which led up the sides of the Misty Mountains - cold at best, frigid and desolate at worst.
Elrohir shook his head in sympathy at his twin, packing his own bag. "How do you think I feel? What did I do to deserve being saddled with the same punishment? I didn't even try to steal a kiss! I should have but I didn't and yet here I am, being forced to accompany your sorry arse to the furthest reaches of Imladris!"
"You would have had you had the opportunity, Elrohir, and you well know it. Had you moved a bit faster, it would have been you in the wood garden with Merenant that Glorfindel pitched into the lilies, and I would have been the one being forced to accompany your sorry arse to the fences! Ai! My rear will be sore for a week from that landing!"

Glorfindel brought Merenant to Elrond's Chambers the following morning. Smiling gently at the Elleth, who had protested the entire way back the night before of Elladan's innocence - surely he hadn't known she was unwilling .he was always solicitous and kindly in his treatment of her and please, Glorfindel, do not tell Lord Elrond please, Glorfindel, do not punish Elladan please, Glorfindel, I must have said or done something to give him the wrong impression please Glorfindel, it was entirely my fault, punish me instead - he patted her cheek, and instructed her to wait outside the door until she was called.
Entering Elrond's office, the Balrog Slayer walked to stand before the Peredhil Lord, his bearing indicating that an immediate, official briefing was in order. He quickly gave Elrond the facts, up to and including the punishment he had meted out to the Lord of Imladris' sons.
Shaking his head, Elrond said, "Glorfindel I told you to follow him to make sure things did not get out of hand - I know full well the lascivious natures of my sons - but I did not tell you to throw my progeny into the bushes over a stolen kiss, or banish him and his brother to the fences!"
"It was not just a kiss, Elrond his hands were quite busy, and even from a distance I could tell that Merenant was not a willing participant. I have no doubt that Elladan, in his lust, could not see it, but I could. I was not about to let him continue pawing her that, my Lord, will all due respect, is your job."
"Glorfindel! That was uncalled for. Mind your tongue, Slayer, or my sons will not be the only ones on the eastern fences this month!" Elrond growled, scowling at the blonde Elf."
"She is waiting outside the door, Elrond as her guardian, father of the Elf involved, and Lord of Imladris, I should think you'd want to have a word with the poor, beleaguered elleth - if nothing else, but to apologize for the actions of your spawn."
Elrond frowned again. He hadn't exchanged more than a few words with Merenant since the Solstice, never mind being alone with her, and with good reason - he just didn't trust himself. However, Glorfindel seemed to have backed him into a corner and, he was correct. He did owe her an apology on behalf of his son as well as on behalf of his own actions since the Solstice. "Fine send her in on your way out, Glorfindel."
The Slayer bowed, a small, self-congratulatory smile on his lips, as he walked to the door, opening it and allowing Merenant to enter. He winked at her as he left, eager to find Erestor and tell the Advisor that their little scheme to get Elrond alone with Merenant had worked out very nicely.

Merenant stood just within the door, looking down at the ground and biting her lower lip. Her face flushed red as she waited for Elrond to say something anything. The silence was most unsettling.
Elrond looked at the young Elleth, knowing at once that she took the blame for the entire incident even though it would be clear to anyone else that none of it were her fault. He knew she would blame herself for Elladan's loss of control, and subsequent punishment, but for once, Elrond was disinclined to be lenient. Seeing her with his sons had been grating on him for days, though he was loathe to admit it to anyone, including himself.
Stepping up to her, he took her hands in his, waiting for her to lift her head to look at him before speaking. As she turned her emerald eyes up to his, however, all rational thought left him, and he found himself sweeping her into his arms, his lips claiming hers in a most passionate, deep kiss.
