Hobbitnapped

Chapter 13

As soon as Sam, Merry and Pippin got back to Bag End they lay down and tried to get some rest. Though none of them could sleep. They were each caught up in memories of Frodo and worry over where he was now. Frustrated, Sam got up and went into the kitchen to prepare supper. They had missed afternoon tea and lunch was a light affair. When Merry and Pippin entered the kitchen, Sam was just setting supper on the table. There were several large beef steaks, baked potatoes with sour cream and chives, Mushrooms sautéed with butter and onions, assorted fresh vegetables from the garden and a large bowl of raspberry jam and sweet cakes for desert.

They all sat down to eat but not much food got eaten. Not a one of them really had an appetite. After about 30 minutes they all just gave up pretending.

As Sam began to clear away the empty dishes Merry again voiced his displeasure. “We’re wasting our time! We should have headed toward Bree! Like as not it was one of those ruffians that took Frodo. Even if it was Ferny, that’s where he is bound to be.” Sam and Pippin both started to say something when they were all startled by an insistent knocking on the front door. Merry looked at Sam, “Your Gaffer?” Sam shook his head. “No he would have just come in.”

“The Sheriff?” Merry asked. “Maybe.” Sam replied. “Well we’ll never know if you don’t answer the door!” Pippin spoke up as he walked toward the front door. When he opened it he took a step back. “Its an Elf!” he exclaimed. Merry and Sam were immediately beside him. The elf bowed. “I am Silinde from Mirkwood.” The three hobbits bowed in turn and introduced themselves.

“Peregrine Took from Tookland.”

“Meriadoc Brandybuck from Buckland.”

“Samwise Gamgee from Hobbiton, please come in.”

The elf looked at the low ceilings rather uncomfortably. “Why don’t we join him outside?” Suggested Merry. “I would be most grateful.” Silinde replied and the three hobbits joined him on the front stoop.

“What can we do for you Mr. Silinde?” Sam asked. “Would you like a drink or something?” Silinde shook his head “No, there is no time for that.” The three hobbits gave their full attention to the elf and he continued. “My brothers and I were hunting in the woods nearby when we caught word that one of your kind was missing. Today I crossed paths with a human who was talking rather strangely to himself. I followed him for a short way and became convinced he was talking about the missing hobbit.”

“But why did you come here?” Sam demanded to know. “We had heard that the Master of Bag End was an elf friend, I merely wished to tell him my news.” Sam lowered his head and Pippin spoke. “It is he who was taken.” A look of shock and dismay came over the elf’s delicate features. “Had I know this I would have gone after him myself.” Silinde lowered his head. “I am no warrior. I am just now perfecting the use of my bow.” Silinde said by way of apology. Sam looked up at him. “Can you show us where you last saw that man?” The elf nodded. Sam ran into Bag End and returned moments later with Sting. “Lets go then!” He said. Merry and Pippin looked at each other then ran to catch up with Sam and Silinde as they disappeared into the darkening evening.

They had traveled for some time when Sam spoke up “Silinde” he said breathlessly. “I cannot go any further. I must rest or I will fall over.” Sam bent over with his hands on his knees trying to catch his breath. “Us too” said Merry as he and Pippin supported each other. Silinde walked back toward then. “Forgive me, I forgot that Hobbits were not as quick footed as Elves.” He sat down cross-legged in front of the exhausted hobbits. They all flopped down where they stood. “How much further?” Asked Pippin. “Half a days journey by your reckoning.” Silinde answered. “Its near midnight now,” Merry said. “Maybe we should make camp and continue in the morning.” Sam jumped up, “How can you even suggest that when we are so close?!” He yelled. Merry balked at the anger in Sam’s voice. “Sam” he said. “We are exhausted now! What good would we do Frodo if we are dead on our feet when we find him?”

“Merrys right Sam.” Pippin interjected. “We must rest if we are going to be able to fight to save Frodo!” Sam sat back down and put his head in his hands. “I’m sorry Mr. Merry, I’m just worried about Mr. Frodo.” Merry put an arm around Sam’s shoulders. “We all are Sam.”

“Your friends are wise Master Gamgee” Silinde said. “you get some rest, I will keep watch and wake you at first light.” Sam looked up with gratitude. “Thank you Silinde” he said. The three hobbits made themselves as comfortable as possible and soon fell into an exhausted sleep.

True to his word, Silinde woke the hobbits just as the sun was beginning to rise. Sam was instantly on his feet ready to get moving. Merry and Pippin were just as eager. Not a single one of them made mention of breakfast. They were eager to get to Frodo as soon as possible. They walked throughout the morning and just after noon Silinde stopped them and pointed to a run down shack.

“That is where the man was heading.” he said. Sam let out a yell and made to run at the shack with Sting raised. Silinde stopped him with an arm across his chest. “No” he said. “we don’t know if your friend is in there nor do we know who else might be.” Sam lowered Sting. “Your right we should scout it out first.” he said. Just as Sam said this the door to the shack opened and Ferny stepped out carrying something wrapped in what appeared to be a bloody blanket.
