CHAPTER 13:
The seasoned sentry stationed at one of the outermost posts of Imladris blinked his eyes in disbelief, the bow he had been about ready to nock lowering limply to his side, as the approaching figures came to a stop before him. A travel-worn Elladan addressed him.
" Send the call to alert my father's house. Lord Elrohir is gravelly injured."
Only his many centuries of service as a warrior of Imladris, kept the stunned elf from falling into a paralized stupor as he watched the riders and their...mount...go by. That, and the urgency of the twin's words. They galvanized him into action. He unhooked the horn kept at his waistband, placed it to his lips and blew the coded notes that signaled the impending arrival of incoming injured. The call echoed in succession through the forest, barely ahead of the hard-riding Peredhel, leaving a series of slacked-jawed sentries in its wake.
At last they came to the long, stone bridge spanning before the mightiest of the many waterfalls gracing the perimeters of the Last Homely House. There, the great beast carrying Elladan and Elrohir suddently stopped, lifting its nostrils to scent the evening air. Elladan patted the thick mane.
" No one will harm you here mellon nin. That I promise. Please, we are almost there.."
After a moment, the noble creature placed a paw upon the stones.
For the first time since that morning, Elrond felt a smile curve his mouth. He had enjoyed teasing Glorfindel, who was not only known for his unparalled warrior skills, but also for his nearly unparalled beauty. A beauty that the Balrog Slayer was not shy about displaying to full advantage. A chuckle burst forth from the Lord's lips as he recalled his seneschal's blushing discomfiture at being found in such a dissarayed state. Elrond had playfully ordered his friend to seek the nearest bathing chamber, lest his well-earned reputation as a most fashionable elf suffered irrevocably and he found himself utterly bereft of admirers.
Glorfindel's parting look had nearly sent Elrond into peals of laughter. Not that the dignified Lord of Imladris would ever give in to such a display. Still, the lighthearted mood was welcomed and linguered as he savored both, a second drink and the cooling breeze coming through the open balcony doors.
It took a moment for the sound of a distant horn blowing to enter into his awareness. Another, for the meaning of the notes to fully register. Then Elrond was up and rushing out of his study, leaving his hastily placed goblet precariously balanced upon the low table's edge.
Elladan bypassed the main courtyard of the Last Homely House. Instead, he headed straight for the healing wing, knowing that to be the place where his father would go. As he rounded the corner, only the creature's amazing reflexes kept them from running over the lone, hapless elf in their path.
Melpomaen, who had just procured a drought to help soothe his frazzled nerves, nearly fainted as he saw the great beast bear down on him. Only to find in the next instant that some miracle from the Valar had spared him a most undignified trip to the Halls of Mandos.
Although many, himself included, believed Melpomaen to be timid and faint of heart, he could be as fiercelessly focused as the best warriors, once his curiosity was aroused. His eyes followed the creature and he was further startled to see that astride it, were none others than Imladris' own twin Lords, one obviously injured. Without the slightest hesitation, Melpomaen turned and followed.
Elrond came through the doors leading to the healing wing's courtyard just as the great beast came to a stop. And for the first time in centuries, the Lord felt his composure utterly desert him. His shock only deepened as he beheld his sons upon the creature's back.
" Ada!. Elrohir is hurt!."
The eldest twin's voice was laced with latent fear as he began to undo the knot in the strip of cloth that had kept his brother secured to him during their journey.
Elrond was instantly over his momentary lapse, as his son's words sliced right through his parental heart. He immediately began to issue orders to the awaiting healers who, to their credit, set about their tasks despite their own shock at the creature's appearance.
As Elrond approached, the noble beast gracefully lowered its impressive bulk to lie with its front paws extended, before inclining the great head in respectful greeting. The Lord of Imladris could spare no time to marvel at the gesture, simply tipping his own head in return as he made his way to his sons' side, reaching out to hold Elrohir while Elladan dismounted.
Then the healers were there and Elrohir was laid out on the stretcher they carried between them, before the group of elves turned to rush their precious cargo back to the healing rooms. Just as they reached the doors, Elrond spotted Melpomaen standing off to the side.
" Send two guards to me. Instruct them that they are not to harm this creature." Elrond said, eyes briefly alighting on the huge figure calmly reclining upon the grass. " Then inform Lord Glorfindel of the situation. He should be in one of the bathing rooms."
And with that, the Lord disappeared inside.
