@Anon: Yea, Haldir can be all cute when he needs to be! I thought it was time for Maglor to stir up things and though he’s not really mentioned in this next chapter he’s far from gone! Dun dun dun!
Chapter 13: I couldn’t stay away
Legolas was eager to accept Haldir’s affection. He had always been. He didn’t care what he had been told. This had to be more than following a mere order. This was genuine care. It had to be.
He closed his eyes, enjoying Haldir’s gentle embrace for a moment more as he whispered softly, “I do not know what to make of this Haldir”
When he received no answer, he elaborated, “I enjoy spending time with you and… I feel… I feel happy and safe when I’m with you… But Elladan… I feel things for him too”
Haldir slowly brushed his fingers through the prince’s hair, “I have fallen for you hard, prince of Mirkwood. I can’t and do not want to deny this any longer.”
Legolas looked up at the broad Marchwarden, “Why have you?”
The question seemed to bother Haldir as he pondered how best to answer, “All of this started with that one command, though it became so much more than that… then, a command was given for me not to pursue you, in favour of Elladan, and so for a year I kept my distance. I defy my Lord by being here, but I couldn’t stay away”
Legolas listened to the words in fascination. He had never imagined that Lord Celeborn would order his Galadhrim around in such a way, to deny someone the affection of another in the hopes of awakening a love elsewhere… The thought was positively upsetting, “I like that you didn’t stay away…”
The words were whispered so softly that Haldir just barely caught them, but they served to bring that familiar half-smile to his lips, “If you would allow it, I’d be around you even more”
It somehow seemed no longer an issue to defy his Lord if Legolas would but wish for his affections.
Legolas offered a light nod, “I would like that”
As Haldir sat up on the bed he looked on the golden-haired beauty next to him and leaned in to softly claim his lips, “I know I’ve hurt you by what you learned of the reason that started my interest in you, but I hope to amend it by letting you know that since that very command it’s been more than that. Not many manage to earn my respect, but more than that you excite me, your very presence brightens my day”
A light blush coloured the prince’s cheek, “I would like to focus on that then and forget how this was started. You cannot help your orders, but you can help what you do with them”
Haldir offered a light smile, “Lord Elrond’s lessons have truly done you well, you hold wisdom beyond your years. Alas, you need to get ready, prince of Mirkwood, today’s an important day”
Legolas smiled, moving into the bathroom without a hint of fear as he showered and dressed while Haldir kept himself entertained in the main area.
When Legolas stepped back out he smiled as a small breakfast stood ready and Haldir explained, “I know you hate to eat when there are others watching you. Eat now and merely pretend to in the dining halls so that you are at your best for the hunt”
Legolas smiled anew touched by the fact Haldir had noticed that small detail, “Thank you” as he sat down and picked up the strawberries. They were his greatest ‘addiction’ and apparently Haldir enjoyed indulging him, “Will you join me?”
Legolas didn’t miss the look on Haldir’s face that told him the Marchwarden wanted to, even though he shook his head in decline, “I must finish the preparations for the day, we shall speak later.”
Legolas nodded, “Very well, good luck Haldir”
The Marchwarden offered a light bow before he disappeared from the talan.
Legolas finished his meal and took his bow and arrows as he departed and moved to the halls where everyone would gather. Maglor was among the first he spotted but strangely he didn’t feel fear. Let him come. He wasn’t the same fragile Elf anymore that would lay down and take whatever thrown at him. He’d fight tooth and nail and it would be good enough to keep himself safe once Haldir finished training him.
He passed the guard without offering him so much as a second glance, carrying himself in the manner of a true Prince.
Haldir however didn’t miss the look of angered hatred the guard aimed at the prince, causing the Marchwarden to believe this was far from over.
The Elves all gathered, lightly chatting as they waited for the hunt to begin. The stakes weren’t all that high, there was no great reward, but everyone wanted to get the stag, everyone wanted the glory.
Soon after the signal was given for the hunt to begin and though most rushed into it, Legolas took his time and used remarkable patience despite the stakes that would determine his place.
He had to be successful so that he could prove to his father that he could do this.
His pace was slow and methodical as he moved to the borders of the city. Most just ran in hopes of running into something, rushed by the pressure of having to succeed. Legolas stalked, following tracks and signs to guide his way directly to the stag.
The prince had a clear shot at the great animal when he heard his father’s cry in the distance, “Ambush!”
The idea was to have the majority of those participating flee the scene and return to the heart of Lothlorien, but not Legolas.
He released his arrow and struck the deer, wanting that success at least, before he dashed towards the source of the cries, “Ada?!”
His eyes glided along the tree line, but he didn’t spot his father within the borders.
Drawing closer to the borders themselves he spotted the King with his sword drawn, slashing at ugly-looking creatures.
The creatures were similar to the ones that had attacked Lothlorien’s borders before; foul and dark creatures that were intimidating in their ugliness.
Legolas didn’t hesitate, perhaps against better judgment, as he readied his bow and killed creature after creature with lethal shots.
He drew closer and ignored the risk he was taking by doing so, but it seemed that for every creature he killed two more popped up. It was an endless battle.
A loud battle cry escaped him to alert the others, to call in those who had thought to flee after the initial cry his father had sent out, but in doing so he drew the creatures’ attention to himself.
The creatures came storming at him all but forsaking his father, but rather than flee Legolas held his ground and fired his arrows in rapid succession, it wasn’t until a blade cut into his skin that he realized this new threat.
I can’t fight close combat. Yet even as he thought it he could practically hear Haldir’s voice telling him ‘You can. You just have to try’
Putting away his bow he grabbed the two long knives and began hacking away until he alone stood victorious when the other Galadhrim appeared.
Legolas sighed in relief, half concerned more of the creatures would make an appearance.
Though he moved toward them he felt an increasing fatigue come over him before at last there was only darkness. He tried fight it as he found himself tumbling while crying out, “Ada” but couldn’t seem to defeat that darkness threatening to take over now.
His body with the forest ground with a thud as he lost consciousness and it was Haldir who was the first to move to the prince, gently picking up the body while whispering, “I have you, prince of Mirkwood”
Thranduil moved to the pair, unsure at first before he spoke softly, “He saved my life”
The words sparked an anger within the Marchwarden, who did his best to remember propriety in speaking to the King but only felt rage now that Legolas lay so weakly in his arms to save a man who’d never shown him any kindness.
The prince was too forgiving, accepted too much.
The Marchwarden lifted his eyes to the King, speaking in the same soft tone, “Then he did a better job keeping you safe than you’ve ever done for him”
Looking back at the prince, Haldir missed the look of guilt that crossed the King’s features.
Lord Celeborn approached the pair then, assessing the prince’s condition, “He has but one wound that I can see, not one to induce his weakened state. There’s a great chance that these creatures used poison. We must clean the wound as soon as possible or risk losing the young prince”
Somewhere someone shouted they found the stag bearing Legolas’ arrow.
Words of awe spread among those gathered, increasing as they found out just how many creatures he had killed, but Haldir didn’t care, his attention solely focused on the Elf in his arms, “You did not survive all this to die on me now.”
It was Thranduil who then surprised all as he knelt down next to Legolas’ body and touched his cheek, “Open up your eyes, Ionneg”
Haldir’s brow rose as Thranduil openly proclaimed Legolas his son, but he ignored it, instead he lightly touched the Elf’s face, “Fight it, prince of Mirkwood, fight it”
A light soft gasp escaped the young prince who tried to sit up only to lay back down, seemingly having caught some of the words spoken to him, “What happened?”
King Thranduil was the first to reply, “You saved me, my son.”
Legolas’ eyes opened faster than before, eyes searching before settling on Haldir, “Am I sleeping? Dead?”
Haldir offered a light smile, “No, no you’re not”
The prince seemed as confused by the sudden change as the rest of them, but he closed his eyes as though he could escape having to think about it.
Standing with Legolas in his arms Haldir looked at his Lord, “I will bring him to the house of healing to get his wound cleaned, I can travel the fastest of all in these woods”
Lord Celeborn nodded, but it was the King who stepped forward, “You shall take my horse, see him to safety”
Haldir inclined his head but didn’t speak before mounting the white steed with Legolas in his arms and rushing off through the forest before carrying the golden-haired Elf into the house of healing, “He’s been poisoned by creatures of darkness, he is weak… The poison needs to be cured and his wounds needs to be tended to.”
Saelbeth inclined his head to the Marchwarden in acceptance before he ran the necessary tests. Haldir was ushered from the room as the healers set to the task of healing the prince. The cut was healing swiftly, as all wounds did with Elves, but just the same they stitched it up to make sure it would heal nicely and not leave a scar.
The poison was a more difficult enemy to defeat, taking a lot of careful measuring to produce a cure.
The Marchwarden outside wasn’t able to keep calm; he couldn’t bear to lose Legolas and felt weak himself at the mere thought.
It took two hours before Saelbeth came out of the healing wing to speak to Haldir, “He will be well, you can see him now”
Haldir inclined his head as he moved into the chamber, “Thank you”
Saelbeth nodded, leaving the chamber so that the two had some privacy as Legolas glanced around, “Did he… did he really call me his son?”
When Haldir nodded, the prince found tears trickling down his cheek that the Marchwarden gently brushed away.
Legolas offered a light smile, “He’s never called me that, ever”
The Marchwarden slowly laced his fingers with the prince’s, “Perhaps he’s finally seen your worth, your greatness, the way we have”
The prince looked at the proud Galadhrim then, “Thank you for being here for me”
Haldir inclined his head, thinking to himself it truly could be no different.
Legolas offered a light smile, but recalled the command Haldir had been given and now had publically defied, “Why did you…?”
The questioned seemed innocent enough, but it carried such weight that it took Haldir off guard, leaving him to consider a proper reply for a moment before speaking solemnly, “I couldn’t stay away if I tried”
No matter what that meant for them.
