Chapter 14: Hell Hath No Fury Like One Scorned By Chocolate!
After calming Felicity and Boromir down, Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli quickly escorted the two back to where the others were waiting for them.
Leading the way, Aragorn, kept a close eye on Boromir as Legolas and Gimli walked on either side of Felicity. They walked silently until they came upon the camp. It was now vacant though the fire was still ablaze and several of Sam’s pot and pans could be seen scattered about.
Seeing this, Aragorn paused, and held up his hand motioning for the others to stop. He walked around slowly, surveying the area and tried to find any traces to what had happened to their companions. There seemed to be no signs of struggle save the footprints of the four hobbits heading towards a large Elm tree near the outskirts of the camp.
Aragorn quickly headed towards the tree and made his way around it when he noticed a rather large hole at the base of its trunk. Cautiously, he peeked in the dark hole to see the four hobbits nestled together, their swords unsheathed.
“Aragorn!” Sam cried out happily when seeing him.
“May I ask why the four of you are hiding in a tree?” Aragorn questioned, trying to not laugh at the sight before him.
“Strider! You did not hear that horrible noise?” Merry asked rather astonished.
"Noise?” Aragorn looked at them, slightly confused.
“Yes that loud screeching noise! It sounded like one of them dark riders!” Pippin exclaimed shaking slightly.
“It sounded so much like one we grabbed Mister Frodo and hid in this tree!” Sam added.
“Gentlemen, I can assure you the noise or screthatthat you heard was no Ringwraith.” Aragorn reassured them.
“Well then what was it?” Merry asked cocking his head sidewise.
“I believe what you heard was Felicity screaming, “ Aragorn explained. He now noticed the look of worry that they now bore on their faces.
“Well, where is she? Is she alright?” Sam stuttered nervously.
“Yes, yes. She is fine. Now come out of there and join the rest of us.” Aragorn offered them his hand.
The four hobbits climbed out of the hole and made their way back to the camp where Boromir, Legolas, Felicity and Gimli were still waiting where Aragorn had left them. They saw Aragorn come back into view with the four hobbits following close behind him and proceeded to join them knowing now that all was well.
“Why were you halflings hiding? Did something spook ya?” Gimli chuckled lightly.
“They thought they heard a Ringwraith, Gimli,” Aragorn explained.
“A Ringwraith!” Gimli exclaimed, narrowing his eyes and looking around the dark forest for any traces oe.
e.
Aragorn rolled his eyes at the dwarf and placed a hand on his shoulder, “Gimli, there are no wraiths, it was Felicity that they heard.”
“Uh, could someone please fill me in as to what a Ringwraith is?” she stated sarcastically, glaring at them now as she held a strip of cloth to her bloody upper lip.
“I will tell you later,” Aragorn said as he moved towards her and inspected her lip, “Let’s get this wound taken care of first.”
“Aragorn, I am fine and can take care of myself,” Felicity grimaced slightly, feeling a little pain from moving her lip when she spoke. “Besides I suggest that you tend to Boromir, for he is in much worse condition then I am,” she motioned to him, as he was sitting on a log holding a damp cloth to a deep gash in his forehead.
“Why you little…” Boromir quickly stood up and began to head towards her, only to be stopped by Gimli.
“I suggest that you, Sir, turn around and sit back down, for we will be having no more of that, understand?” Gimli stated, giving Boromir a stern look. Boromir turned his head toward Gimli and huffed.
“Yes, you had better sit down, or I’ll take care of that other eye for you, Boromir,” she lunged at him once more, fists drawn up. She prided herself in the fact that his right eye was so badly bruised it was swollen shut-he had it coming; there was no doubt about that!
“Let me tend to her, for I feel it would be best if you deal with Boromir.” Legolas suggested giving Aragorn a knowing look.
Aragorn agreed and he and Gimli took Boromir to the farther side of the camp.
“Ahem!” Legolas heard then and when looking down saw Merry and Pippin standing before him.
“Yes?” Legolas asked the two.
“You just do not know when to quit do ya!” Pippin sneered at him. Legolas knew what was coming next.
“Yeah, your always bothering one of our fairies!” Merry glared now at him, “So I guess since Kimber’s not around, you are going to be botherin’ Felicity?!”
Legolas took in a deep breath. He had to admit that the first one hundred times he thought the two were amusing with their little possessive nature, but lately it began to grow on his nerves.
“Merry. Pippin,” he spoke sternly to them, “I was only going to tend to Felicity’s wound, nothing more.”
Felicity raised a brow at his tone, could it be that the elf, who always had his emotions in check, was now losing his patience? She decided to help him out by changing the subject and finding out where Kimber had gone off too.
“Speaking of my sister,” Felicity now looked at Merry and Pippin, “Where is she?”
“Ah! She went to talk to Rumil,” Pippin pouted.
“And may I add it was against our better judgment!” Merry crossed his arms in front of his chest.
Felicity quickly looked to Legolas, who was frowning after hearing of Kimber’s whereabouts.
“Well are you going to mend me up here or are you going to let me bleed to death?” Felicity asked half jokingly as she managed to give the elf a small grin.
“My apologies Felicity, “ Legolas replied, snapping out of his trance. He guided her lightly by the arm over to one of the sleeping mats where he motioned for her to sit down. He crouched down and examined the cut closely, then turned to Sam and asked him to fetch some water so that he could clean the wound. Sam wasted no time and quickly returned with the water.
Legolas, as gently as he could, dabbed the cut with the wet cloth, removing the dried blood. Once he was satisfied, he asked Sam to bring him his pack. He did so with little time lost. Legolas searched through his belongings until he finally pulled a small vile which contained a white paste.
“What is that, Legolas? You are not putting that on my lips,” she paused. “I have conjured up enough ‘solutions’ to know better than to let anyone put anything on my lips, lest you tell me what is in it first.”
“You should feel honored Felicity, for this is a special healing ointment created by the elves. It should ease your pain in no time as well as speed up the healing process.” Legolas smiled lightly at her as he applied the ointment to her lip.
“Perhaps you should feel honored for even touching my lips,” she smiled, wincing again as he applied the salve.
“There!” he announced, “You should be as good as new!” He started to repack his belongings and was just about to stand when he felt Felicity pull him back down.
“Legolas,” Felicity whispered, “Do not be upset that Kimber is with Rumil. She had to talk to him sooner or later to straighten this out.”
Legolas looked down to the ground, “Are my emotions set upon my sleeve?” he questioned, disgusted with himself.
“Please do not think like that. All I am saying is that she only has feelings for you, so you needn’t worry. That is all, ” she offered.
Legolas grew uncomfortable knowing that Felicity could read into his thoughts so easily. He knew that she was just concerned about his relationship with her sister, but his carelessness in revealing his emotions bothered him to no end.
“Felicity, I do believe you when you tell me of Kimber’s feelings for me, but there are still questions that I have that can only be answered by her to convince me of such things.” Legolas paused, giving Felicity a look of serenity, “Now, let us talk about your little spar with Boromir. What in all of Endor possessed you to do such a thing?”
The scene played back in Felicity’s mind as she recalled everything that had taken place, “I heard what he said about my sister; he had no right to disrespect her in that way!” Felicity responded a bit defensively.
“I understand your loyalty and love for your sister, but you should have not acted as you did Felicity,” Legolas’ expression became firm, “He could have seriously injured you or worse yet, he could have killed you!”
Felicity couldn’t help but to let small laugh escape from her mouth, “Kill me? Not in his wildest dreams.”
Legolas shook his head in disbelief, “Have you no fear?”
“Legolas you are wasting your breath. She heeds her own advice, lives by her own creed, she is selfish and does not care how her actions affect others; even those who care for her” Haldir stated coldly as he now stood over top of them.
Felicity quickly stood up and gave him an impertinent look, “Why Haldir, I do believe that you have just described the March Warden of this forest!” Felicity swiftly turner ber back to him and noticed Rumil and Kimber now running into the camp.
“Felicity!” Kimber exclaimed now heading towards her, “What happened?! Are you alright?!” she panicked as she now saw her sister’s bruised lip “Who did this to you?” Immediately Kimber looked to Haldir giving him an evil glare, “Did you do this to my sister?!”
Haldir stood silent, his pride hurt at Kimber’s accusation.
“Kimber, I am okay.” Felicity began.
“Did he do this to you?” Kimber demanded.
“No, I just had a little spat with Boromir that is all.” Felicity replied with a shrug.
“Just a little spat with Boromir!” Kimber could not believe what she was hearing. “Well you can explain everything to me while I take care of your wound.”
“There is no need to, Legolas has already tended to me.” Felicity smiled.
“Legolas?” Kimber whispered a little stunned. She had not taken notice of his presence until hearing the mention of his name just then. Slowly, she looked to see him staring at her and quickly turned away, ashamed for all that she had done to him.
“Yes Legolas,” Felicity answered, “And since you are both here, I think now would be a good time for the both of you to talk.” she suggested looking at both of them.
Kimber could only imagine what he thought of her now. Legolas on the other hand looked to Felicity who was motioning for him to take her sister away, she knew Kimber was not going to make the first move.
He approached her sy any and held out his hand to her, “Kimber?” he spoke in a soft tone.
Kimber looked up slightly to see his gesture and nodded as she took hold of his hand. The couple slowly walked off into the night.
“What goes on here Rumil? I thought you…” Haldir began to question his brother after watching Legolas walk off with Kimber.
“It is nothing Haldir, just a misunderstanding that I would prefer not to talk about at the moment.” Rumil replied, “Now if you all will excuse me I must return to my duties.” Rumil excused himself and headed off into the forest.
“As you were, brother,” he looked after him then at Felicity, who was heading into the wood; he thought it appropriate to go to her perhaps; but dismissed the notion, first he needed to have a word with Boromir.
**********
The silence that engulfed them was making Kimber uneasy, she decided to break it, “Legolas I am…”
“Kimber, let me speak, as I have found that crow is best eaten while it is still warm,” he offered.
She now looked at him curiously.
“I need to apologize for my actions, for much has been revealed to me by Gimli,” he began. Kimber’s expression softened a bit.
“You do not…” she began.
“Please let me finish,” he insisted.
“Gimli has enlightened me to all that I missed during my hasty retreat but…the fact still remains that Rumil has offered you his hand,” Legolas looked to her for an answer.
“And I have refused,” she stated reassuringly.
“Have you?” he wondered.
“I have told him how I feel for you,” she replied.
“Kimber my heart is glad and yet saddened at the same time, as I can not help but to wonder why he thought it appropriate to ask for your hand if you did not give him reason to do so,” Legolas suggested.
“What?” she inquired.
“I do not mean any offense, but I must know Kimber I can not…” he began before she interrupted him.
“Legolas,” she smiled now thinking of the circumstances surrounding the proposal.
“Kimber?” he gave her a puzzled look.
“Now you be silent while I explain,” she smiled at him. He took a seat on a stump and looked up at her, her eyes danced in the moonlight as she began her recount of said events.
“So what you are saying to me is that whilst I was making a fool of myself in front of the hobbits, he was setting himself up for marriage and you were paying no attention,” he quirked a brow.
“Oh I was paying attention, just not to him,” she smiled coyly before taking a seat next to him.
He looked upon her now, eyes transfixed with hers; he entertained Boromir’s thought for a moment-he was bewitched, by everything about her; her voice, her beauty, her lips…her lips…he could contain himself no longer as he brought his mouth upon hers.
She was quick to respond to him as she melted into his embrace.
“Kimber,” he pulled from her for a moment and looked deep into her tawny-colored eyes, “I love you.” He uttered before kissing her.
“Legolas, I love you too,” she whispered now caressing his face before meeting his lips once more, they held each other for a moment. A sense of peace had come over him as he held her close, never before had ever imagined giving his heart to another but he had and she had given hers to him.
“Wellam gam glad to see that the two of you have come to terms with your shortcomings, though I must wonder if this union is not doomed?” Gimli gruffed.
“Gimli?!” Legolas objected.
“One passes out and the other runs for cover at the first sign of a disagreement, should make an interesting marriage,” he chuckled.
“Master Dwarf!” Kimber resounded.
“Young lovers, I am joking with you! It warms my heart to see two who are truly in love come together, for it tis rare in my land. Where I’m from you just marry the gal with the shortest beard,” he laughed heartily.
“Gimli,” they now chuckled together.
“Come let us join the others,” Legolas stood and offered a hand to Kimber.
“Before we do,” she paused, “Legolas you know my feelings for you and for that I am not ashamed, but if it pleases you, Rumil is dealing with great anguish right now,” she looked to the ground.
“Say no more Kimber, I understand, you do not want to bring him more grief than he already has,” Legolas deduced. “As much as it will pain me to keep my hands from you, I will obey your wishes, my lady,” he bowed his head.
“Alright, alright enough of that!” Gimli huffed as the two now made their way back to camp.
**********
Felicity wandered over to a nearby tree. Sitting down, she leaned back and closed her eyes as she tried to rid herself of the sickening feeling that was coming upon her once more.
“Are you alright?” Felicity heard Frodo’s voice and slowly opened her eyes to see him kneeling beside her.
“Yes, I am fine. I must over exerted myself is all.” she sighed.
“Is it true what I hear of you and Boromir fighting?” he questioned as he was now joined by the other three hobbits who were also eager to hear what had taken place.
Felicity let out a soft laugh, “Ah, yes it is true,” she confessed.
All four hobbits looked to one another in shock and then back to her.
“Miss Felicity, why would you do such a thing?” Sam asked, breaking the silence.
Felicity closed her eyes, “Let’s just say that he said some rather nasty things about Kimber and no one but no one talks of my family in that way,” she took in deep breath as she felt her stomach begin to turn.
Frodo saw that Felicity was in no shape to continue with the explanation and knowing the other three, they would not give up until they heard the complete story, “Alright let us leave her to rest, she can tell us more later on,” Frodo stood and began to shoo the others away.
“Thank you Frodo.” Frodo looked down to see Felicity give him a quick smile.
“Your quite welcome” he decided to sit beside her and wait until Kimber returned, as he was growing more concerned about her health as of late. She was glad to have him there as she rested her head on his shoulder and dosed off.
*********
“Aragorn,” Haldir called to him as he tended to Boromir’s eye; which was swollen shut, “I would like a word with your comrade,” Haldir approached the two.
Aragorn gave the Warden an uneasy look; Haldir offered him a non-threatening artificial smile.
Boromir offered Aragorn a smug look, “I can hold my own, Ranger.” He was still a bit peeved about their disagreement earlier.
“As you wish,” Aragorn stood and walked past Haldir offering him a nod as he headed back to camp.
“Ah, Boromir, my friend,” Haldir strolled over to the rock he was sitting on and took a seat next to him.
“Haldir,” he acknowledged him; thoug was was a might embarrassed to be sitting next to him looking as he did; at the hand of a maiden.
“It seems as though you have had your hands full this afternoon,” Haldir looked at him.
He paused for a moment, staring off into space, “It was that wretched Felicity.”
“So it was. She is something; is she not?” Haldir offered, thinking of how it must of looked with the two of them fighting.
“Yes, but ‘what’ I do not know,” Boromir’s eyes widened now, “ I only know that this is not over, she thinks she has gotten the best of me but she has not, Haldir, I swear to you as we sit here that I will see that she pay for this,” he pulled down his shirt revealing teeth marks on his shoulder.
“And I swear to youromiromir, that the injuries you now bare will not hold a candle to what will become of you if I even see you cast an eye upon her, let alone touch her,” he peered at Boromir out of the corner of his eye, “I will snap your neck with my bare hands,” he replied evenly before standing and taking his leave.
It infuriated him to no end that Boromir would harm anyone of the female persuasion; especially Felicity! Only a weakling, a coward would do such a thing. He wondered if she were well. He knew her in as much as he knew himself, even if she were not she would not admit to it.
*********
”Wake up sleepyhead,” Kimber whispered.
Felicity’s eyes shot open at the sound of her sister’s voice, for the last thing she remembered was falling asleep on Frodo; who oddly enough, was nowhere in sight.
“You know what I’ve got a craving for?” Felicity pined.
“What is that Felicity?” Kimber asked curiously.
“Something we haven’t had in days,” she replied, regaining her composure, she grabbed her sister by the arm and led her into the woods.
“Now where do you suppose they are off to, Haldir?” Orophin walked over to his brother and motioned to the two of them as they trotted off.
“Give them a half of an hour, then we shall go after them,” he replied wearily for he was quickly tiring of keeping tabs on them; alone they were barely manageable. Together they were truly a handful.
Much to his delight, they returned in half the allotted time having taken one of Sam’s gathering baskets, which now brimmed with fruit and brown beans of some sort.
“Now what do you suppose they’ve got there?” Merry cocked his head curiously at the fairies.
“I don’t know Merry, but whatever it is it looks like we might be able to eat it,” Pippin rubbed his tummy.
Kimber grabbed Sam’s pot and placed it over the fire once more before retrieving the basket.
“Uh, Felicity whatcha got cookin’ there?” Pippin now hovered over them; Kimber inspected each cocoa bean before placing it into Sam’s pot.
“We are making something for dessert,” Kimber smiled.
“Dessert? What is dessert?” the hobbits responded all at once.
“You mean to tell me that you have never heard of dessert?” Kimber giggled.
“The way you hobbits eat I don’t believe that for a minute!” Felicity looked at them in disbelief.
She stirred some sugar into the pot as the beans cooked; Pippin no longer able to contain himself, reached over, grabbed a handful of beans and shoved them into his mouth. He chewed on them for a second before spitting them out on the ground.
“What? What is the matter Pip?” Merry gave his friend a worried look.
“That was horrid!” Pippin gasped.
Kimber slapped his hand and glared at him, “That’s what you get for sticking your hands in other people baskets, now wait,” she huffed. Both he and Merry were surprised by her actions.
“Yeah, Popcorn,” Felicity smiled in agreement.
“It’s…oh never mind,” he sighed picking the pungent beans from his teeth.
“I don’t suppose you might give me a taste?” Kimber looked up to see Legolas standing above her. She smiled gracefully and was about to dip a cherry in the mixture when Felicity slapped her hand down.
“Felicity!” she gasped.
“He can wait just like everyone else.” she insisted
“You’ve certainly got a feisty woman, Haldir,” Orophin laughed.
“Indeed I have.” he smiled as he watched her wag her finger at Legolas.
“Why don’t you give it a try”, Gimli taunted as he walked over to the two of them, “Surely she would not refuse the March Warden of the Golden Wood,” in effort to keep his reputation, as it were, Haldir accepted the challenge.
“What have you got there ladies?” He now approached them.
“We are making dessert,” Kimber replied sweetly, motioning to the pot as she added more beans to the mixture.
Haldir bent down to their level, “How about giving a little to the March Warden?” he smiled suggestively.
“Oh sure,” Kimber blushed before looking to her sister whose back was to them at the moment. Kimber handed Haldir a strawberry. He kissed her hand graciously and lowered the fruit to the pot.
“Do it and you’ll be drawing back a nub”, Felicity turned to him, “Just because you are ‘in charge of walking us around’ does not mean you are in charge of this dessert, now off with you, March Warden!” she pushed him aside causing him to fall back on his bottom.
He stood up and brushed himself off before heading back over to his brothers.
“Boy they are but forces to be reckoned with around the kitchen or rather around the cooking pot,” Legolas smiled as he now walked over to where Gimli and the sentinels were standing.
“Ha! I see that someone has been denied,” Orophin laughed at his brother’s failed attempt.
“Quiet, as if you could do any better,” Haldir insisted.
“My dear bother we know our place in the fairy’s pecking order,” Orophin replied.
“I bet she would give some to Frodo”, Gimli snickered; Haldir cut him a glare.
“The wager?” Haldir challenged.
“Your bow,” Gimli eyed the ante, “For my axe”.
“Yes, I suppose such a tool would come in handy for cutting kindling…done,” Haldir retorted proudly.
“Ah, I believe that it is finally finished”, Kimber smiled, dipping her finger in the tepid chocolate. “Mmmm!” she sighed.
“Let me have a taste” Felicity insisted doing the same, “delicious!”
Just then Sam and Frodo came into you view as they were now returning from gathering more wood for the campfire.
“Do you smell that Mister Frodo, what is it?”’ Sam closed his eyes and inhaled deeply.
“Let’s go find out Sam,” Frodo smiled as they walked over to where the fairies sat, huddled over one of Sam’s cooking pots.
“Ladies, that aroma is truly intoxicating what in Middle-earth is that, for I have never smelled such a thing,” Frodo knelt down beside them.
“Open your mouth and close your eyes,” Felicity insisted. Frodo obliged parting his lips. She dipped a strawberry in the warm chocolate, blew on it in a rather seductive manner until it hardened (all the while looking Haldir right in the eye). She then popped the fruit into Frodo’s mouth.
“Mmmm…that was delightful,” he smiled wiping a dribble of chocolate from his chin while the crew of elves along with the dwarf stood there with their mouths agape.
“Aww! That wasn’t even fair,” Merry whined as he toddled over, “How come he gets to have some and we don’t?”
“Merry,” Kimber tried to appease him, “It wasn’t done before, we didn’t want you to get sick,” she placed a hand on his cheek and lovingly stroked his hair.
“Yeah like I did, Mer,” Pippin joined them now, “But since its finished how’s about you give us a nibble?” he smiled as Kimber dipped two strawberries in the chocolate liqueur and popped them into their mouths.
“Unbelievable,” Legolas looked on in disbelief as Kimber popped another strawberry into both Merry and Pippins’ mouths. They looked like goats at feeding time, mouths open waiting for another morsel to be tossed.
“Well you can believe this,” Gimli stated with a grin as he walked over to where Haldir’s bow was resting against a tree, picked it up and slung it over his shoulder. Haldir’s ear tips were reddened and his nostrils were panned as he looked on to see Felicity now feeding Frodo a cherry. She was smiling at him as she wiped the excess from his face delicately with her fingers.
“Fuzzy feet two, March Warden zero!” Gimli taunted as he cruised past the elves.
