Disclaimer: I do not own the Lord of the Rings (and associated) book series, nor any of the characters from it. I do not make any money from the writing of this story. |
The bad news…well, I’ve been attacked by plot bunnies again and even after promising not to start a new story until this one is half way through (which is a long ways from that), I have started a new fic. Honestly, they (the vicious and fickle plot bunnies) wouldn’t let me sleep until I had done so. I haven’t posted anything yet on the new fic, which is not a LotR fic nor Orlando Bloom related, but will let everyone know when I start. It will probably be only published at aff.net, ff.net and my site, Mystifying Dreams.
Thanks Liz.

I hope to keep you dancing, lol.
Nita from ElvenLords
While I have several ideas brewing in my head, I am stubbornly keeping to this story and will not stop writing this story until it is complete. Even if it takes years and I start millions of other stories.

I am trying really hard to interweave Nianna into the story as much as possible so she seems part of the group instead of an add-in. I appreciate your praise so much because it lets me know that I have at least accomplished this on some level. As for Nianna finally getting rest, I felt tired describing her adventures so I knew it was time for Nianna to sleep (elf stamina or not), lol.
Yue from aff.net
I hope this chapter lives up to your expectations. I’m glad you like Nianna and there are hopefully a lot more fun scenes in the future. Your more recent review gave me the spur I needed to get this next chapter out. I actually felt bad for updating with such a short interlude, lol.
Senor Noodlepants from ff.net
Not sure if this was a positive review or not but thanks for reading anyway.
Crecy from ff.net
It took forever to get them there but they finally made it, lol.
As always, a huge thank you to Elfmaiden for being a fabulous beta. Go read her fantastic LotR story called Finally Love as well as her Highlander story, Torn at the Mystifying Dreams website. Thanks again Elfmaiden.
Chapter 13: Reunions
Nianna was woken from a restless night by a strong knock on her door. She was able to interpret the knock was made from a wooden object, and reasoned that Mithrandir had come to visit. She quickly rose from her bed and donned her dressing robe. She crossed the bedroom, practically at a run, and entered the small sitting area to answer the knock.
[“Good morning, Nianna. I hope you have rested well.”], Mithrandir greeted as the door opened.
Nianna only watched the Istari intently as he walked into the room. She followed him with her gaze as Mithrandir sat in one of the large chairs provided in the small sitting room. She knew not to rush Mithrandir and she simply sat across from him and waited.
After Mithrandir got comfortable, he stated, [“I have news.”]
Nianna quirked an eyebrow in anticipation as the exasperating older man took his time. She waited patiently for him to begin but Mithrandir stubbornly stayed quite.
The silence of the room was deafening and both occupants remained quite. Just as Nianna began to speak, a small knock interrupted the silence.
[“Ah, breakfast.”], the Istari said as he rose and welcomed the young elf, Silmarwen as she entered the room. She carried a large tray containing two covered dishes, as well as two large goblets.
Seeing this, Nianna moved the light table beside her to stand between the two chairs.
[“Good morning, Silmarwen.”], she greeted.
[“Good morning, Lady Nianna. I hope you rested well.”], the young elf replied.
[“As well as can be expected.”]
Nianna watched as the maid left the tray on the table provided to her and softly exited the room. Once Mithrandir had closed the door behind her, he returned to his original seat and uncovered his dish. Without speaking he began to dine on his breakfast, not once looking at the younger elf, which at that moment had returned to glaring at him.
Realizing that her stare was not producing the results she had hoped for, Nianna followed his example and uncovered her morning respite and began to eat as well.
A companionable meal replaced the once deafening silence as the two old friends ate their breakfast. Nianna sat back on her chair once full and watched Mithrandir as he continued to eat. If she didn’t know better, she would have assumed that he was part hobbit based on how quickly and how much the older man ate. He even pointed and silently asked for the reminder of her bread, which she conceded and smiled as he eagerly took it.
The reminder of the hobbits brought back the worries of the night before but Nianna patiently waited for Mithrandir to finish eating before beginning.
As the Istari finally sat back from his meal and lit his pipe, he stared out the large open window that overlooked the surrounding Imladris grounds.
Nianna had had enough, she had been patient and it was high time that Mithrandir reveal his news.
[“Mithrandir…”], she started.
[“Frodo is fine, Nianna. He is resting and the danger of him dwindling into the Shadow World has passed.”], Mithrandir interrupted before she could continue, [“He will be sleeping for the next several days as his body heals from the damage the blade inflicted.”]
Nianna sighed, thankful. She was relieved that young Frodo would live to tell his tale.
Mithrandir turned his stare to the elf sitting beside him, [“You do understand the ramifications of such a wound?”]
Nianna only nodded her head. The wound that Frodo had sustained would haunt him to the end of his days. The scar would always be a reminder and always sore, as if only several days had passed since its infliction. Any who made contact with the Nazgul in such a way, even vicariously through another object, suffered a constant reminder.
Nianna looked down at the arm that never seemed to warm completely and flexed her fingers. Even though she had never made direct contact, she still felt the icy numbness of the Nazgul residue left behind.
Mithrandir watched her actions, [“Were you injured?”], he simply asked.
[“No, when I first came across the hobbits, one of the Nazgul had already found them. He had separated Frodo from the other three. I charged towards them and attacked the wraith, hoping to get Frodo away from him. As Frodo ran toward his friends, I stabbed him to buy the little ones some time to reach the ferry.”], she explained quietly, never removing her eyes from the arm that had held the short sword. It began to grow slightly numb from just the memory of the encounter and she continued to flex the arm bringing normal feeling back to it.
Mithrandir leaned forward, [“You are irrevocably linked with this wraith. If you are nearby, he will sense you and you will be able to sense him. The sound of his voice will cause your arm to remember its initial pain…but luckily for you it will only be slight. He will never have a hold on your mind due to only being connected through metal.”]
Leaning back in his chair, he gravelly said, [“Unlike Frodo. Because a Mordor blade wounded him, they will affect him more so. Even if by chance the Nazgul could be killed, the wound will be a constant pain to him. They will be able to sense his presence to a greater degree and if they call to him, he will be hard pressed not to follow.”]
Nianna finally looked up, [“Frodo is stronger than you think, Mithrandir. He will be able to resist their call.”]
Mithrandir drew on his pipe, causing a small puff of smoke to escape the corner of his mouth, [“Indeed he is, Nianna.”]
Nianna glared once again at the all-knowing Istari while he only grinned around his pipe in return.
The grin slowly faded as Mithrandir continued, [“We have received word from the Mirkwood party.”]
Nianna straightened and with wide eyes waited anxiously for him to continue. Clutching the arms of the chair, her breathing shortened.
[“They are safe.”], Mithrandir quickly continued, not wanting to distress the young elf before him.
Once again, Nianna sighed in relief.
[“They had to take the more northern route through the mountains. The High Pass through the Misty Mountains has been overtaken by orcs.”], he said.
Nianna listened intently as the Istari continued, [“They suspect that not long after you had passed, the orcs moved away from Mirkwood to seal off the pass. There were too many of them, for the small party, and it was decided early on to travel further north before attempting to cross the range. They are expected to arrive at Imladris by the end of the week.”]
Nianna smiled, happy to hear the good news.
[“The other attendees of the council will arrive before than with Gondor’s representative arriving the day after tomorrow. Lord Elrond has decided to hold the council the day after your party arrives.”]
[“Has Lord Elrond mentioned the matter on what will take place at this council?”], she asked curiously.
[“Only that the fate of the One Ring would be decided. Besides that, it would depend on the other participants of the meeting.”], he answered.
Both occupants returned to silence and stared out to the lush greenery that was framed by the open window. Mithrandir finished his pipe and returned it to a hidden pocket within his robes. He stood, [“Well than, I will leave you now and allow you to prepare for the day. Arwen and her returning party should be here by midday. I will see you than, Nianna.”]
[“Thank you, Mithrandir for coming.”], Nianna rose as well and escorted him to the door.
After closing the door behind the Istari, Nianna leaned against it and thanked the Valar for the good news that had been delivered to her. She hoped that in the near future, she would be able to fulfill her promise to the hobbits and return them home.
*****
Nianna wandered the halls aimlessly as she awaited the arrival of the search party to Imladris. She had dressed in a simple green gown that afforded her mobility in case she decided to take Fir Gael riding later in the day. The only other chore left was to return the tray of now empty dishes and goblets to the kitchen. Once that had been completed, Nianna was at a lost on what to occupy her time.
“Ah, you must be Nianna,” an older hobbit said, startling the elf with his sudden appearance. She had been lost in thought and had been unaware of another’s presence as she rounded a corner in the expansive hallways.
Nianna looked down at the hobbit, “Hello, you must be Bilbo Baggins.”
The hobbit seemed pleased at being known, “I wanted to thank you personally for bringing Frodo safely here.”
Nianna smiled, “Frodo has quickly become one of my closest friends and I would do anything to make sure he remains well.”
Bilbo held out his hand and as Nianna took it, he shook it enthusiastically, “Never the less, thank you.”
Nianna took his words graciously. As the two walked together, they acquainted themselves to each other.
An hour passed of Bilbo regaling her with stories of Frodo’s and his friend’s antics as children when she heard with her elven hearing riders entering the courtyard.
Nianna smiled, “I believe the rest of the hobbits are here, Mr. Baggins.”
The smile that crossed the seemingly ancient features on the hobbit, lit the hallway with its brilliance, “Let’s go and greet them, shall we?”
Despite Nianna’s excitement to see the three other hobbits as well as Estel, she paced her steps to the shorter and slower stride of the hobbit beside her.
As they approached the courtyard, Nianna could easily hear Merry’s and Pip’s excited voices carry through the hallways. She smiled as she saw the party come into view and when they noticed her approach, a dual scream echoed through the courtyard, “Nianna!”
Merry and Pip ran to the elf as she bent down to give each a welcoming hug.
“I am so delighted to see that you are all well and safe,” she said.
“We were so worried about you and Frodo,” Merry said. They both turned towards Bilbo and just as enthusiastically as they had greeted Nianna, they greeted Bilbo.
Sam, a little slower than the other two, reached Nianna. As he hugged Nianna, he asked, “How is Frodo?”
She placed a hand on the solemn hobbit’s cheek, “Frodo is fine, Sam. He is doing well and is resting as we speak.”
Sam finally smiled, “Can I see him?”
“Certainly, I will take you to him,” she straightened holding out her hand, which Sam took, led him towards the healer’s room. Before disappearing around a corner, she looked back and nodded a welcome to Estel who returned it.
Estel turned his attention back to the three hobbits that now spoke excitedly to each other. Merry and Pip had overheard Nianna’s assurances to Sam and knew that Frodo was in good hands. They quickly moved onto more important matters such as getting directions to the quickest route to the kitchens.
Estel smiled at the hobbits and eagerly volunteered his services to aid them in their quest. As he began to guide the hobbits, he noticed that another would be joining them. Arwen graciously took his offered arm as they walked towards the dining areas with the three hobbits leading before them.
*****
Sam had stubbornly remained at Frodo’s side while the injured hobbit healed. The only amount of time he would allow himself to be separated from his friend was upon the insistence of the other three hobbits, Nianna, Estel and Arwen. They all watched Frodo for short intervals, allowing Sam to rest.
As several days passed, the other delegates arrived. First the men from Gondor arrived and than the dwarves. While Nianna had encountered men before, including Estel, she had only seen the dwarves once during her long life. Dwarves tended to stay within their mountains and rarely traveled above ground. From a balcony, she watched with intent curiosity as the small group rode into the courtyard.
“Nianna,” a voice spoke softly behind her, not alerting the dismounting dwarves of her watchful gaze.
As Nianna turned toward the back of the balcony, she smiled at Estel as he drew closer.
[“Your curiosity will be your down fall one day.”], he joked.
Nianna laughed softly, [“Sometimes it is my curiosity that has aided me in future endeavors.”]
He leaned against the sturdy railing and looked down as Lord Elrond greeted the guests.
[“You hold no ill-will towards them?”], he asked.
Nianna returned her gaze at the man that was stood beside her, [“Ill-will, why would I hold ill-will toward them?”]
[“Many elves feel slighted by the dwarves. Since they were not the true creations of the Valar, elves feel that they are an abomination. Add to the fact that a group of such beings escaped from Mirkwood not long ago, and I would think that you would hold that against them,”] he explained.
[“While it may be true that it was not the Valar that initially created them, it was the Valar that breathed them life. I can only assume they had a purpose for doing so. Elves hold too much regard in their title as Children of the Valar. We are all ultimately the offspring from them,”] she said, returning her gaze to the now empty courtyard. She had always been a little upset regarding the elves small prejudices against other creatures of Arda and couldn’t understand how her enlightened race could continue to perpetuate such ideas.
[“Besides, according to Bilbo, the dwarven party that had briefly been our guests at Mirkwood had a little help in leaving,] she said slyly looking back at Estel.
He smiled, [“Other…citizens of Mirkwood may not see your view point.”]
[“Other citizens, as you put it, are stubborn. And will need much…persuasion to be shown the correct path,”] she said.
Estel laughed out loud, no longer needing to hide their presence, [“I am sure that such persuasion will be easy to mettle out when the correct time presents itself.”]
[“Of course,”] Nianna said. She turned away from the balcony and went in search of two mischievous hobbits.
Estel watched her leave and shook his head. He did not envy one particular citizen of Mirkwood in his dealings with an equally stubborn she-elf.
AN: Okay, before I get flamed for giving out incorrect information, here is the background needed on dwarves.
First of all, it wasn’t the Valar who created the elves, it was Iluvatar (The One) who created the Valar and subsequently the Elves and Men. Aule the Smith is one of the eight greatest Valars and forseeing the creation of Elves, he created the dwarves because he wanted to “have children” as well. But Aule did not have the ability to breathe life into his creations and after “talking” with Iluvatar, he was told that his creations would be brought to life but only AFTER the elves. This is the VERY short version of the story, check out http://www.glyphweb.com/arda/default.htm (The Encyclopedia of Arda Online for those of you at fanfictiondotnet) for more info.
It’s a complete assumption on my part that the reason the elves hold dwarves in low regard is because they are not the direct creation of “The One”.
The reason I used the Valar’s name instead of Iluvatar’s is because if you have been reading this fic, you are more familiar with the Valar being a part of the story and makes it easier to read if I continue to try and make this as easy as possible.
The Tolkien world is expansive and can take many years to fully understand, heck my dad has been studying it for decades and he tells me that every time he rereads one of the books, he learns something new. I am continually astounded at the depth of history, culture, religion and everything else he did in creating this magnificent world.
On with the story!
*****
Two days had passed since the dwarves had arrived. Nianna occupied her time between the hobbits and satisfying her curiosity on the visiting dignitaries. As the end of the week drew nearer, she became noticeably more withdrawn to the hobbits. Anticipation and worry for the Mirkwood party continued to plague Nianna. Often times, she could be seen laughing with the hobbits or talking with Arwen and Estel and the next moment she would be quiet, reflecting inward her thoughts and worries.
It was one clear day that she was escorting Merry and Pip, along with Arwen, back to the room where the newly awakened Frodo rested. Sam continued to refuse to leave Frodo’s side despite the many urgings from the younger hobbit.
After breakfast, Nianna and Arwen carried trays back to the room to offer food to the two remaining hobbits. Merry and Pip cheered the two she-elves with further stories of their adventures, mostly arguing on who had done what and at what time such events had occurred.
During one of the heated debates, Nianna stopped suddenly. Her still body alerted her companions that something was amiss. Before they could question her, she smiled brilliantly, placed her tray on a nearby bench and took off swiftly down the path.
Arwen, having guessed the reason for her friend’s hasty retreat, simply smiled while the two hobbits looked astounded at the swiftness of the she-elf’s disappearance.
Merry looked up to Arwen, “What’s going on?”
“The Mirkwood party has arrived,” she replied.
Pip looked quizzical, “How did she know?”
Arwen simply shook her head and guided the hobbits to the courtyard. She laughed out loud at the sight that greeted them as Merry and Pip watched with surprise.
Nianna was currently laughing and embracing an elf that had obviously just arrived after a long journey. Four other similarly dressed elves had dismounted and were smiling at the couple. Nianna drew back slightly and to the astonishment of the two hobbits, kissed the elf passionately.
Nianna had no regards to her audience and simply enjoyed the touch and embrace of the other elf. Her heart swelled and tears clouded her eyes at her happiness of this long awaited reunion. The kiss was welcoming but also hinted at a more private reunion away from curious eyes. As she drew back, she smiled up at the brilliant blue eyes of the elf that still held her. One hand she laid on the broad shoulder of the male elf while the other stroked gently along the lines of his smiling face. An arm wrapped tightly around her waist, joining them firmly together and a hand that brushed back the loose curls of her hair returned her attentions. It was an intimate scene between the two but one the hobbits felt no guilt in breaking up.
She didn’t hear the slight clearing of throat from one of the hobbits, so lost was she in the gaze. But at the light laughter from the Evenstar she turned her head toward them never breaking the embrace. As she smiled at the two hobbits that waited patiently, she winked and turned back to her companion.
[“Come, there are two little ones that I wish you to meet,”] reluctantly she broke the tight embrace but still holding hands, she walked toward the hobbit with the other elf following closely behind.
“This is Meriadoc Brandybuck and Peregrin Took,” she introduced to the still unnamed elf.
“Merry, Pip, I would like to introduce you to Prince Legolas of Mirkwood…my husband,” she smiled gleefully.
Both elves smiled at each other, while Arwen covered her laughter at the scene before her. The two hobbits stood still with mouths gapping and eyes widened in shock at the unexpected announcement.
Let the flaming begin…Actually wait, before you decide to seriously flame me…can I say something. Did I surprise you? Even a little?
I’m actually doing a little dance right now cause I FINALLY got everyone to Rivendell. After the terrible time I had writing Chapter 12, I am immensely relieved that this chapter took little effort once I started, especially after the little conversation regarding dwarves (that just popped in, out of no where).
Forewarning though, the next chapter will probably be R rated. I have decided that I will only post this chapter at fanfictiondotnet, adultfanfictiondotnet and my website/group, Mystifying Dreams. For those of you who are reading this at a Yahoo Group, don’t worry, I’ll let you know when the next chapter has been loaded. I decided to do it this way because I know some groups don’t allow fics with a rating above PG-13 so in order to make this as easy as possible for me and to avoid confusion, I will simply notify all the groups when it is loaded at the above sites.
As I stated at the beginning of this endeavor, I did have a prequel and sequel planned for this story. While I may change my mind regarding the sequel, plans are already spinning around in my head for the prequel. I probably won’t start it though until this tale is done, but you may get some little tidbits as this story continues regarding Nianna’s and Legolas romance together.
If you are still reading this, than chances are that you are still interested in this story and may decide not to flame me. Thank you, but I would appreciate a little feedback from readers regarding this little twist. I wanted to do something different from other fics and I hope I have done so without pissing too many people off.
Sorry for being so chatty. See you at the next chapter.
Liz
