Chapter 14: I have wronged you
Lord Celeborn hadn’t missed the way his otherwise stoic Marchwarden had become a frantic mess when he saw the Prince of Mirkwood fall.
It seemed despite the command to stay away his most important warrior just couldn’t.
That was a problem; love complicated everything and took away from logical thinking to produce these frantic situations. It wouldn’t do, something somehow had to change.
His pet would not escape him.
King Thranduil’s sudden embrace of his son puzzled just about everyone, but he himself didn’t seem to think it anything odd at all, as though he had forgotten he had just a year ago sold the Elf because he deemed him a disgrace.
It was Rúmil who approached the King, “My liege, your son will be fine given some rest, he liked for me to convey the message that he is happy you are unharmed”
There was a moment of silence in which Rúmil thought the change of sentiment had been short-lived, but King Thranduil surprised him yet again, “I shall go see him soon, thank you… Rúmil, isn’t it?”
Rúmil nodded lightly, but the King’s next request for him to join him was so unexpected he didn’t know how to respond.
Urged by a nod from Orophin, he sat down next to the King who offered him a glass of Miruvor, “Tell me, has my son long taken this role?”
Though it started with innocent conversation, the subject slowly twisted and turned and somehow it had come to Rúmil being questioned about how many partners he had shared himself, “I…”
The blush that coloured his cheeks couldn’t be missed even as his voice dropped to a whisper while he answered, “I haven’t…There haven’t been any"
The King seemed surprised at the revelation, but took a moment to form thoughts before he spoke, “I must say I find this surprising, an Elf like you… Perhaps we should see about amending that sometime”
With that the King rose, leaving Rúmil to wonder his intent while the King left to see his son.
Haldir looked up as the King entered the room, puzzled by his intent but prepared for the worst. It was a rather big surprise to see the King to approach his son as if he were the most loving father in the world, “Would you leave us?”
Coming from the King it wasn’t so much a question as much as it was an order so Haldir nodded, looking to Legolas as he moved, “I’ll be right outside”
The prince looked worried, unsure, saddening the King, “I have wronged you, my son.”
The words truly were an understatement, but coming from a man who had spent years making him feel as if he should never have been born they were perhaps the kindest words he would expect to hear, still his father pressed on, “I am sorry I didn’t listen to you when you needed me to… While I’ve seen you here you were among the bravest of Elves, going as far as risking your life for one who is in part responsible for your own life being… not the best. Not many would do such a thing.”
Legolas offered a smile at that, “No one should die alone. No one should die if it could be helped”
The King looked at his son, “You carry more honour than I, Legolas, for I am not sure I could agree to that sentiment myself. I do not think if roles were reversed I might’ve done the same thing”
Though Legolas wanted to deny it, he didn’t. He wasn’t so sure that his father wasn’t right, still he shrugged refusing to accept his act as a thing of greatness, “I only killed the creatures, ada… Apologies, my liege, I did nothing of greatness to deserve such praise”
Thranduil winched as his son corrected himself in calling him father, “I am truly sorry for the pain I have caused you… I do not know how I could attempt to correct that wrong… or if it can be corrected”
Legolas however seemed less impressed by the suggestion; how often had he wanted his father to see the truth of the matters? How often had he attempted to make his father see the bruises that clearly showed his pain only be ridiculed and humiliated? Legolas shook his head, “’Tis nothing to worry about… You didn’t have cause to mistrust your guards. If I were not an active witness, I might not have believed it myself”
The words showed a wounded soul that had accepted blame. The words betrayed the fact that Legolas lacked the spirit to argue the fact he hadn’t been a willing participant, lacked the fire to want his attackers to be punished.
Thranduil shook his head at his son’s easy dismissal, “I should have trusted you. You are my son.”
Legolas offered a light smile, “I am thankful you accept me now”
Could it truly be that easy? The King didn’t believe it should be, but who was he to argue with his son in the matter of forgiveness?
Thranduil bowed his head in a show of gratitude, “It should never have been otherwise”
It was his son however who once again showed remarkable kindness and forgiveness as he offered his father his hand, “It is in the past. Let us leave it there, ada”
Accepting the extended hand the King of Mirkwood took it into his own with a smile, “I can do that, lonneg. You shall never doubt my care again, that I promise”
With that the King took his leave, leaving his son to rest while pondering the ways in which to amend past wrongs. First, he needed to see to his guards. They had committed acts that were unspeakable among Elves and though Legolas showed remarkable strength having endured so many years of it, he wouldn’t torment his son any more by having to see the Elves that had harmed him.
His son’s forgiveness might’ve been easily given, he himself wasn’t so easily accepting of it.
The wrongs had to be righted.
As the King left, Haldir returned to the prince’s side, “You seem content”
Legolas smiled, nodding, “I am… I could want for nothing more. He finally accepts me, sees me and believes me”
Haldir sat down next to him, taking his hand and pressing a light kiss to the palm, “As he should, prince of Mirkwood. I imagine then that soon you shall return…”
The sentence trailed off but there was no mistaking the heavy emotion in that voice. Haldir didn’t want the prince to leave, didn’t wish to be without him.
Legolas didn’t miss the unspoken desire and shook his head at the suggestion, “One day, perhaps, first I wish to repay the debt over my purchase and learn all that I can so that I do not have to doubt myself”
The answer didn’t seem to satisfy the Marchwarden completely, who was waiting for something else. Something more. The knowledge caused the prince to smile, “And, there’s a certain Marchwarden I do not want to miss… I forgot his name…”
The smile returned to the Marchwarden’s lips, further lifting the prince’s spirit as Haldir spoke, “It pleases me to hear that, prince of Mirkwood”
Timing was the key to everything and Lord Celeborn was a master at it as he strode into the House of Healing just in time to hear the end of the conversation between the prince and the marchwarden. Love. They couldn’t love, they were entirely unmatched. A prince and a marchwarden? An abused slut and a pet? It could never be.
He’d seen it coming, this development, and so the Lord had planned ahead in preparation for this moment, “Young prince, I’ve received word from Elrond of Rivendell. He invites you to join him in Rivendell for one season, to train with Glorfindel and to learn from his trusted seneschal Erestor. Shall I let him know you’ll be there in a fortnight?”
Legolas seemed unsure at the sudden plan but didn’t seem suspicious of it, but Haldir knew the true reason for the sudden question; Lord Celeborn didn’t support the relationship he and Legolas were building now, not at the expense of his Grandson and so he hoped to change the matter.
The prince didn’t realize the intention behind the agreement and Haldir had no way of alerting him without Lord Celeborn being aware.
Not before long the prince gave a nod in confirmation, “Please do”
Hanging his head Haldir realized this would be the end of it, there would be no returning.
Haldir didn’t doubt the training Legolas would receive there was solely focused upon becoming ready to claim the throne when the time came, after this visit he’d be returned to Mirkwood now that the relations there seemed to have been restored and a union between him and Elladan would be encouraged to strengthen the bonds between the lands.
Lord Celeborn nodded in great satisfaction at the prince’s answer, announcing that he would make the necessary arrangements before he left the two.
It was Haldir who spoke first while looking at Legolas, “I cannot stand to lose you”
The prince tilted his head curiously, “Haldir…it will only be for one season, I shall be back before you know it, you hardly lose me”
But he would.
Legolas just didn’t see the greater plan unravel before him. Haldir did and he knew he was powerless to stop it from happening and yet he wouldn’t burden the prince with the knowledge. Perhaps it was simply for the best.
He leaned in, gently pressing his kiss to those of the Prince, “My heart shall weep in your absence, Prince of Mirkwood”
Legolas offered a light smile, “As will mine, Haldir… Can you not come? I could request it, couldn’t I?”
Lord Celeborn would never allow it, it would complicate his plans. The Lord would find a reason, an excuse to make sure Haldir wasn’t able. The Marchwarden forced a smile to his lips, “I do not believe Lord Celeborn would accept his most trusted captain leaving…not for such a while”
Though pouting the prince nodded, “Perhaps you could come to visit me, for a few days?”
The journey alone would take as much, Legolas knew it even as he suggested it but still he remained hopeful.
Haldir offered a light smile, “Perhaps I could.”
The words served as an assurance to Legolas, but they weren’t necessarily true. It wouldn’t be allowed, Lord Celeborn would never let him go.
Legolas looked at him then, pondering for a moment as a light blush tinged his cheek, “Haldir…?” “Yes Legolas?” “Could you… I mean… would you… I would like for you to… No, never mind it”
The Marchwarden’s brow rose in curiosity over the words, “What is it, prince of Mirkwood?”
It had seemed like a good idea initially, Legolas couldn’t very well deny it was actively on his mind, but now that he stood so close to voicing the thoughts he just didn’t know if he should.
Fear took over and he shook his head, “No, please, I was wrong to voice plans that shouldn’t be spoken of… Let us forget I mentioned anything”
To speak his thoughts now was just too much, he just couldn’t do it. It was too much, too forward.
The words were spoken and Legolas seemed beyond reluctant to speak of the matter, but Haldir found himself uncaring, somehow what Legolas had wanted to say seemed of great importance and he couldn’t bring himself to let the subject go.
The Marchwarden grasped Legolas’ hand, pressing light kisses to it, “What is it, Legolas, you can tell me… You know I would never judge you, wrong you or make you feel uncomfortable”
The Prince nodded slightly, “I just… I wondered what it would be like to…without it being forced and with someone I want…I wondered what it would be like… with you”
To say the words surprised Haldir was an understatement. He stared at the Prince for a full minute, until he smiled, “You would want this… with me? You are certain of it?”
The prince gave a small nod that seemed somewhat unsure still, “Yes…”
The Marchwarden smiled, “Once Saelbeth has determined you’re good to go we shall attempt such a thing, once you are rested and your body has ceased aching”
It was the greatest gift Haldir could receive from the prince and although it would only be this once, at the very least it’d give Haldir a lasting memory to get him through the rest of his immortal life knowing he’d never lay eyes upon Legolas again if he left now.
They didn’t stand a chance once the prince was removed from the realm likely to never return. Haldir’s heart was heavy, but the thought of what it might bring warmed his soul, “I must see to some things, prince of Mirkwood, find me as soon as you may leave here”
Legolas nodded his head, watching as the Marchwarden left the room.
A light smile played on his lips with thoughts of what was to come. This was the start of a new forever. With Haldir.
