Chapter 15: It will kill me
Aragorn was the first to react on sheer instinct alone as he covered Legolas up with a blanket. He didn't care about his own state of undress so much as he worried about Legolas' modesty. His eyes met with the stranger's. A tall dark elf that commanded attention, muscular with an unusual tan, "I would say we quite managed to get ourselves out of such"
It was Haldir who spoke next, "It has been done m'lord..."
Námo narrowed his eyes, "Ah, yes, yes, you've fulfilled your part of the bargain in binding to the princeling wishing desperately that I'd made an appearance after he had managed to cover up and protect his modesty, you may keep your life here, as was agreed."
By the Valar, not only did the man have a bad timing, he had little idea of sensitive behaviour.
Haldir felt the prince's eyes upon him as the news was delivered, searching, wondering, imploring, "I was going to tell you my sweet prince, I didn't want it to sway your judgment, to guilt you into it knowing I'd perish if you didn't..."
There was a look of hurt so pure in the prince's eyes that Haldir knew he'd made a grave mistake without Legolas having to tell him as much.
The silence lasted as the latter send such a gaze to Aragorn, too, worsened by his words, spoken in disbelief, "You knew. It is why you rushed me, rushed this..."
Aragorn, too, needn't answer for the answer to be obvious.
Legolas, now angered, gathered the blanket around him, "You should've told me. One of you. Both of you. You should've trusted me to follow my heart." He stood, ready to walk out of the talan and find himself another when Námo raised his hand, "Sit, Legolas Thranduilion, there is more to be discussed. It is true that the binding was a necessity to keep Haldir bound to this realm and secure his place in it, but it seems your scheme to include Aragorn, son of Arathorn, in your affairs has changed all the rules. Never in my life have I witnessed this"
Haldir's brow rose in question while he stood and slipped on his trousers for the sake of propriety, "What do you mean, m'lord?"
The Keeper of the Slain nodded for Haldir to sit down, after which he looked at the three, "It shouldn't be possible, but it would seem Legolas' great love for the both of you has confused his Fëa ... the result of which is even odder, even to myself and as you could well imagine, I'm not entirely acquainted with the possibility of not knowing something in the matter of Fëa... but it would seem that all three of your Fëa, or souls as Mankind prefers, have bound and connected"
Aragorn stared at the dark creature before them, "That's not possible. They cannot be bound to me"
Legolas was the only one to sit in complete silence, his pale face becoming more pale even though that wouldn't seem possible.
The Marchwarden spoke next, questioning what all three were wondering about, "What does this mean for us?"
Námo offered a casual shrug of the shoulders, "Only time will tell. As I mentioned this is the first time something like that's happened, I do not know what effects this has on either your immortality, or Aragorn's mortality. There's no way to know, but to find out."
With that Mandos disappeared from the talan, leaving the three behind.
Every bit of contentment that had been in the room had vanished, replaced by an air of tension.
Haldir was the first to spoke, a hint of resentment in his voice, "I should never have agreed to this, to you joining us in our life together."
Aragorn stood, pulling on his pants, "It is not as though I asked you for it, do not for a moment flatter yourself by thinking that being tied to you was a part of the plan or a fancy"
The two broke into a great argument aiming insults back and forth, it wasn't until the door clicked and interrupted the argument that they realized Legolas had left.
The Mirkwood Elf sprinted through the Lothlorien forest, tears rushing down his cheeks. He kept running until he came to the edge of the forest and climbed into a Great Willow Tree, nestling in its branches and seeking Nature's comfort as he did.
Haldir narrowed his eyes at Aragorn, "See what your continuous meddling has cost? You should've stayed away from him. You call him love but you condemn him!"
Aragorn charged at him, throwing punches, "I would never do anything to purposely hurt him"
Haldir shook his head, "But you would. You have. Remember?"
The words were cruel and harsh, but sadly Aragorn couldn't deny they were true.
It didn't matter that he hadn't harmed Legolas since, that one incident was one too many. He was lucky and ever grateful that Legolas had forgiven him and understood...He looked at Haldir then, "I may have made mistakes in the past, but with that one incident came a promise that I'll forever keep. I will never hurt him, never risk his life. I will find a way to fix this, to amend the mistake and restore the bond as it was meant to be, but now... That is not my concern. He is. This will have to wait."
Aragorn rushed out then, his shouts for Legolas echoing throughout the silent forest but going unanswered.
A rustle alerted him and he turned around drawing a sword and winding up just short of cutting Haldir's throat. The Marchwarden looked at him, "You are right. I made this about details, about mistakes and regret... I shouldn't have. This is about him and he is my everything, he loves you...you have as much a right to be bound to him as I do, even if I do not like that you are or what it might mean. I wronged him equally."
Aragorn gave a light nod of understanding, "Let's just worry ourselves about finding him now"
The two soon discovered that finding a Mirkwood Elf in a forest wasn't at all easy.Their calls for him went unanswered and it wasn’t before long that Aragorn grew frustrated with the lack of answers, “He's lost to us, we cannot find him if he doesn't want to be found"
A light grin came to Haldir's lips, "It is clear you humans have little knowledge of the binding of Fëa. We could find him anywhere now."
It was simply his preference not to use the method because Haldir felt it was too easy. Now, they had no choice, "Close your eyes and think of our sweet prince. You'll feel a pull, a strange sensation that feels instinctual but isn't. Follow it, it'll lead you to him"
For a human, it must be more difficult and so Haldir was the one to move ahead following that golden link with Aragorn following closely behind.
"Legolas!" "Legolas where are you?!"
He heard the cries, heard as they grew closer yet he couldn't bring himself to call out and answer them. Why should he?
Let them search for him, let them worry. They cared little to nothing about the impacts their argument had on them. He wasn't sure they even realized he was leaving until after he'd gone.
It wasn't until he heard Haldir's voice right underneath the Willow Tree he was in that he realized that the pair would find him anywhere Stupid. He should've remembered.
He didn't move, not even as the Marchwarden began climbing the tree and soon sat facing him while he heard Aragorn cry up from below, "Is he alright??"
Legolas stared at the Marchwarden, eyes red and swollen from all the tears he'd cried.
Haldir cupped his face, gently brushing away the tears, "Forgive us, lirimaer... Our anger was misguided... It was our fear over what had happened, what it meant to you... Please forgive us"
The prince didn't answer, couldn't. His eyes searched Haldir's before a throaty voice escaped him, "How would I live with this? I couldn't survive with the two of you constantly fighting. It would kill me."
Haldir nodded, but then lightly brushed his fingers through the prince's hair, "There shall be no more fighting, it shan't happen again"
Legolas looked at him, eyes betraying suspicion, "How can I trust that? You say one thing, but how do I know for sure it would not happen again when you two find something else to disagree on?"
The Marchwarden offered the hint of a smile, "Because we love you, my sweet prince. Come, forgive us our errors, it was never our intention to upset"
But that was the problem, wasn't it? They didn't mean to upset him, but they did. That they did meant they could inadvertently do it again and he would suffer for it.
Still when Haldir urged him down the willow tree to Aragorn who, according to the Marchwarden, was as equally worried and eager to see him, Legolas followed without so much as a word.
Aragorn drew him into his arms and whispered softly, "Please forgive our stupidity. Our actions were less than honourable, we know that... but our reasons were. The both of us were worried about what had happened, frustrated over what it might mean for your life. Not our own. There's positive attributes about the situation too, I mean... I for one feel quite content with the situation as it turned out."
Haldir nodded, piping in, "In addition to that, we've decided we had two choices. One was to hold on to grudges, hurting you and truly being no better off for it ourselves, the other was to accept we both love you to the point we'd die for you willingly, that we want to see you as happy as we can make you and that truly, there's ways to make this work"
Legolas watched the pair curiously, as though doubting the two, but Haldir went on, "We love you, Legolas and, though Aragorn and I have our differences I respect him for what he's done for you and vice versa, it might not be the unconditional love you feel for us that we feel for each other, but there's a basis to be build upon. It can work."
Aragorn smirked then, "Plus, I don't know about Haldir, but I don't mind sharing you as much as I thought I did, not now this new step was made. There's ways for the three of us to all be together, even if there's no submission between Haldir and I."
Haldir nodded with a grin of his own, "It may not ever be love, but there is lust enough for us not to mind the exchange."
The King of Gondor drew Legolas close, kissing him lovingly, "You looked beautiful in the midst of us, submitting to us both and yearning every bit of pleasure we had to give you...For that alone we shall make it work"
The proud Marchwarden gave a short nod, closing the distance and pressing his body up against Legolas' from behind, "Indeed"
Legolas' cheeks tinged red at the words as he shyly hid his face against Aragorn's chest, "When you put it that way..."
Haldir grinned slightly at the words, whispering lowly into Legolas' ear, "You can't do anything but accept the words spoken and yearn for what we have to offer you, isn't that right, my sweet prince?"
Legolas nodded, a light purr escaping him at the very thought of what that entailed and breathed a wanton, "Yes"
Aragorn offered a light smile, "Whatever this bond means, let us all make the most of it and enjoy it to the fullest. Let us go home"
The end.
