Chapter 16: Should never have come
Haldir never thought he’d mind being alone, that the solitude would drive him insane, but it had only been a day since the parties had left for Mirkwood and Rivendell, taking his lover and his brothers with them and he was already overcome with despair.
It was the Lord Celeborn who came to him, “You should not feel such grief. You know it’s for the best. You could never have provided Legolas with what he truly needs in his life. He is to be King one day, he cannot let himself be paired with a mere Marchwarden, no matter that you are the best out there”
Whether the Lord of Lothlorien believed this would truly make the Marchwarden feel better Haldir didn’t know. Ultimately it just made him feel all the worse as the last bit of hope was brutally torn away. Lord Celeborn was right; Legolas could never be his.
A moment later he was alone again, growing ever more frustrated with the thoughts running wild in his mind; thoughts of Legolas trapped beneath Elladan’s body, of Legolas never even sparing him a moment of thought.
A greater sadness overtook him as he whispered softly, “How will I live with this?”
He couldn’t….but he had to. Too many lives depended on his watch, his skills.
And so the proud Marchwarden drowned out his emotions and fully focused on his task.
Meanwhile Legolas had arrived at the borders of Rivendell, greeted by Glorfindel who took watch, “Mae Govannen, Legolas Thranduilion”
Legolas offered a light smile while inclining his head, “Well met, Lord Glorfindel”
Though tired, Orophin didn’t linger. Instead he felt an overwhelming necessity to return to his brother and shortly after he started his way back home.
The Prince of Mirkwood and what remained of the party followed the golden-haired Balrog slayer to the city itself.
Nervous, Legolas watched as a group of Elves approached them, led by Lord Elrond with the twins in tow as well as the Seneschal and another number of Elves Legolas didn’t recognize.
Dismounting the horse he was greeted by an excited embrace from Elladan before the dark-haired Elf froze and whispered softly, “You smell of him my Prince. The scent of him still lingers on you…”
The prince froze too, a heavy blush colouring his cheeks, “I…How..’
Elladan continued the light embrace, “Others won’t notice it, they don’t know how his scent makes a difference to your own. Wish that I had not either”
With that Elladan drew back and away, looking considerably shaken by what he had learned. There was no time to speak of it as Lord Elrond stepped forward and greeted the party and explained the purpose of Legolas’ presence here; he was to train with Glorfindel in the art of wielding weapons other than a bow and to manage in hand-to-hand combat too and he was to study with Erestor whilst also enjoying the warmth of the halls in the cold of winter and the many splendours Rivendell had to offer.
Legolas nodded, inclining his head in gratitude before following the party to the dining halls where a grand feast had been prepared in his honour.
Though appreciative, Legolas wished he could in good honour seek out Elladan to speak of their earlier encounter, to … explain.
He rose, intent on joining Elladan, when Elrohir drew near and sat down beside him, “Leave him be. I think we both know you’ve already done enough damage. My brother might fancy you to be innocent and naïve to the ways of the world but I do not share the sentiment. You dally with Haldir then come here and hope for my brother’s affections? Perhaps the stories about you weren’t entirely fabricated.”
Legolas grew pale throughout Elrohir’s words, tears filling his eyes, “Saes, that is not true…”
Elrohir raised a brow at him, his voice becoming softer but more menacing all the same, “Leave my brother alone. Others may fall for your tears, your excuses, your pathetic coyness but not I. You will leave him be, or I’ll reveal you to the world for what you are, you Mirkwood slut”
The words were enough to give rise to fear, proven by how the young prince stood and excused himself before fleeing the dining halls.
Once out, he stopped. He didn’t even know where to go.
A shivering mess he sat himself down against the wall, arms wrapped around himself, “I should never have come here”
It was Glorfindel who startled the young Elf with soft spoken words, “Harsh words to speak in light of those who would help you”
Legolas looked up, brushing away shed tears, “I am grateful for the aid offered, I am… but I know my presence here isn’t wanted by all. That there are those… those that would wish me harm”
Glorfindel touched the youth on his shoulder, “You are safe within our realm, prince Legolas, you have no cause for fear. If ever alarmed… seek out any of us and find aid immediately offered”
Legolas nodded, then looked up at the tall warrior, “I… I don’t know where to find my chambers”
A light smile followed, “Come, I will show you”
With a nod, the prince stood and followed the Balrog slayer to his chambers, “They’re among the most luxurious within our city, prince, and they lock, if need be, from inside out if that should make you feel more safe”
Legolas inclined his head, “Gratitude”
With that the great warrior took his leave, leaving Legolas behind as he closed the doors, “This will destroy me…”
/I miss you Haldir/ his thoughts rang out, and somewhere in the tall woods of Lothlorien his Marchwarden heard those words, but considered them figments of the imagination, /By the Valar I miss you too, my beautiful Legolas/
Legolas closed his eyes as savoured the fleeting thought as though Haldir were truly speaking them, but frowned at his own stupidity over it before a knock broke him free of thought altogether, “Who is it?”
Silence for a moment as Legolas drew closer to the door before at last a voice responded, “It’s me.”
Legolas opened the door, “Elladan, come in”
Elrohir’s threat all but forgotten, the Prince was simply happy to have company, “I… I was hoping to speak with you”
Elladan nodded as he closed the door behind him, “I didn’t think you’d leave so fast… you hadn’t even eaten”
With that Elladan produced a small collection of food, including strawberries, “You must eat”
Legolas blushed slightly, bowing his head, “Hannon le”
Elladan watched as the prince eagerly ate the food, “Why did you leave, if you are so hungry?”
The Mirkwood seemed to hesitate to give answer for a moment, “I was… Someone didn’t want me to be near you. To leave you alone… They said I am… that the stories were right”
A frown crossed the Half-Elf’s features, “Apologies, Legolas, but please do not take such words to heart. I understand the need for comfort, for warmth… Were that it had been in my arms you sought it, but as it is, I understand the need that drove you to it, my sweet prince”
Legolas looked away, “You’re too kind…”
Elladan smiled, “’Tis not as much kindness as it is self-serving. I want to be with you, Legolas, you know this, you know my heart. Just… if you would… Tell me why him?”
