Chapter 18--Unwanted Nursemaid
"Do you want anything to drink, Erestor?" Glorfindel asked from his chair, "or perhaps I could read to you some more?"
Erestor sighed, vexed. He had been right. The last couple of days had been miserable. Glorfindel hovered like a fussy mother. "No, but I would like it if you would fetch me a book from my chambers that I was reading. It is on the nightstand," he said.
"Do you not like the book I was reading to you from?" Glorfindel asked with wide-eyed innocence.
Erestor sneered. "If I have to listen to one more vapid, boring love poem I will be violently ill. I would like my book if you please," he said.
Glorfindel pretended to pout then got up. "You are cruel, lirimaer, but I will go and get it right now," he said and left the room.
Erestor sighed and relaxed, trying to make the most of this brief period of peace and quiet. Just then he heard the door creak open and looked that way. He knew Glorfindel could not be back already. It wasn't Glorfindel though; it was the twins.
"Uncle 'Tor, can we come in?" Elrohir asked nervously.
"Of course, little ones," Erestor said gently.
The twins entered the room and carefully climbed onto the bed, making sure not to jostle Erestor. "We are sorry you got hurt because of us, uncle 'Tor," Elladan said.
"Really sorry," Elrohir added. "Will you forgive us, uncle 'Tor? We promise we will never be bad again."
Two pairs of sad dark blue eyes peered up at Erestor and he couldn't resist. "I forgive you, pen neths, but you have to keep your promise and never do such a thing again," he said.
"We will not," Elladan said adamantly. "Thank you. We will let you rest now." The twins climbed off the bed and headed for the door.
Glorfindel walked in just as they reached it. "What are you doing here, young ones?" he asked.
"We came to tell uncle 'Tor we were sorry he got hurt. We did not bother him, uncle 'Fin, honest," Elrohir said.
"I know you did not, but your mother is looking for you. Run and find her," Glorfindel said. He watched them scamper from the room then walked over to the bed. "I found your book, lirimaer," he said, holding it up.
"Thank you," Erestor said. He reached for it and scowled when Glorfindel pulled it away. "What are you doing?"
"No thank you kiss?" Glorfindel asked with a mischievous grin and a teasing wink. "I am disappointed, lirimaer."
Erestor glared. "Stop it and give me the thrice damned book. I am sore and stiff and do not feel like playing your silly games," he said crossly.
Glorfindel frowned at that and handed the book over. "Are you in severe pain? Elrond left something to ease it if you need it," he said.
"I do not need it. I just want some peace. Do you think you can manage that?" Erestor asked, opening the book. He shifted and couldn't control a wince as sore muscles and injured ribs protested the movement.
Glorfindel saw it and went to the dresser where the vial of medicine sat. "I think you had better drink some of this," he said.
Erestor looked up. "I have already said that it is not needed," he pointed out.
"I think it is and I am in charge of your care. Either you drink it or I call Elrond and he will gladly force feed it to you if need be. I will do the same if I must," Glorfindel said. He held out the vial. "Drink it, lirimaer."
"How many times have I told you to cease calling me that?" Erestor demanded.
"Do not try to distract me. It will not work. "Now drink this," Glorfindel said.
Erestor muttered, but he took the vial and drained it. "Satisfied?" he asked.
"Yes, it should numb the pain soon," Glorfindel said. He sat down in the chair next to the bed and plucked the book from Erestor's hand and laid it aside. He began moving Erestor gently into a reclining position.
"What are you doing?" Erestor demanded.
"If you are hurting then you should not be sitting up. I will read the book to you," Glorfindel said. He sat down and picked up the book. Opening it to the marked page he began to read.
Erestor sighed and surrendered to the inevitable. He was at Glorfindel's mercy until he healed, a frightening thought.
Dinner time came and went then the room slowly darkened. Glorfindel lit several beeswax candles then returned to his chair. "Time for you to get some sleep, lirimaer. You need sleep to help you heal," he said. He adjusted the blankets over Erestor. "I imagine Elrond will be here to check on you tomorrow morning. Good night." Leaning over Glorfindel kissed Erestor on the forehead.
Any other time Erestor would have yelled at him, but he was tired though he'd never admit it to the Elda and he wasn't interested in an argument. He ignored the affectionate gesture and allowed himself to slip into reverie.
