Chapter 18: Stronger than you think
The power of telepathy was faster than any horse, but only of use to the most ancient of Elves and those who had bound their fëa.
Upon this revelation Haldir had understood the strength behind his imagination, the power of it; it had been real, through mind and heart Legolas had joined him.
As it was Lord Celeborn used the ability to notify Elrond who appeared stunned by the words, but moved into action immediately by gathering his healers and Glorfindel as they rushed to the prince’s chambers.
They knocked first, but when no answer came it was Glorfindel who broke down the doors themselves.
It was him also who discovered the young Prince within the bathroom, his blood staining the tub while the Elf himself was as white as snow as life had started escaping him, “Legolas… Why?”
It was Lord Elrond who ignored the obvious questions but instead took the lead and instructed the Elves what to do.
Get towels, return to the Halls of healing and prepare needles and herbs… carry the Prince.
Glorfindel carefully picked up the ever weakening Elf before the whole of the party rushed toward the Halls of Healing.
The situation didn’t escape the attention of the crowd as they rushed passed the dining halls.
It was Elladan who responded first –responding only through emotion, “Ada? What happened to him?”
No answer came initially, forcing Elladan to follow after the group, “Will he make it ada? He has to make it, saes.”
As they laid the Prince to one of the operating beds, Elladan moved to him and gently brushed his fingers through the golden hair now tinged with blood, “Don’t die… Don’t die Legolas, saes. I didn’t mean it… I love you. Please don’t die.”
The words weren’t missed on Glorfindel who narrowed his eyes at the Half-Elf, “We shall speak now, while your father attempts to save a life nearly lost. Out.”
Even as Lord Elrond and the healers approached the prince, Elladan hesitated while feeling overwhelmed with guilt over what he thought had caused Legolas to make such a drastic choice.
Meanwhile Haldir was made to rest, to eat and drink several potions all in the attempt to strengthen himself to compensate for Legolas’ decline of it.
In the hallway Glorfindel looked at Elladan, “What did you do to him?”
Elladan shook his head, “I did nothing. I..I caught him with Elrohir.. he was… He was pleasuring himself…I got angry… I didn’t mean to… to cause him to…”
Glorfindel raised one finger at him while his other hand moved up to rub his own temples, “Find your brother. I will deal with the both of you. NOW, Elladan”
The younger Half-Elf nodded and rushed off to retrieve his brother.
Initially Elrohir refused, feeling he wasn’t at all to blame for Legolas’ latest bout of insanity.
It wasn’t until Elladan stressed that it was Glorfindel himself who had demanded it that his brother sighed and went along.
The Balrog slayer was always intimidating, but even more so when angry. Staring down on the twins he narrowed his eyes, “Now. What happened? All of it.”
Elladan related the story of what he felt had happened and what he had said that he believed caused Legolas to make his choice. Utterly sincere, Glorfindel turned his gaze to the older twin who consciously seemed to avoid eye contact, “Is that correct, Elrohir? Do you confirm this?”
Elrohir nodded, but didn’t elaborate and so Glorfindel pressed on, “If it is true what you say Elrohir, why would the Prince say you forced him?”
Elrohir shrugged, “Feeling guilty and stupid?”
Glorfindel raised a brow, “Truly? Weren’t you angry with him? When you found out yesterday that your brother had gone to see him? I seem to recall you spewing venom over it to some of your friends. Why would you now desire him suddenly, while yesterday you declared him a filthy whore wholly undeserving any affection and by greater definition your brother’s?”
Knowing he was caught in his lies, Elrohir looked up at the Balrog slayer. He couldn’t think of words to escape the truth even as he felt his brother’s horrified gaze upon him, “You said that about him? Just yesterday?”
Elrohir nodded, then Glorfindel snarled, “And you forced him to do what he did when Elladan walked in, didn’t you?”
Another nod even as Elladan replayed the facts, replayed the emotions he’d seen on Legolas’ face, replayed the way Legolas turned around to face him, “He wasn’t erect”
The words were but a whisper, but the knowledge betrayed everything in favour of the Prince.
Not even the Balrog slayer was in time to stop Elladan from pounding on his brother, “You worthless… How dare you?! If he… You better hope he lives Elrohir!”
Glorfindel pulled the dark-haired Elf back as he looked at Elrohir in clear distaste, “You are no better than the Guards that once condemned him”
Elrohir felt a tear slip down, “That’s not true! I did it for ‘Dan! He shouldn’t be with that… that…”
Elladan narrowed his eyes, “He’s a far kinder, more beautiful and more caring Elf than most in this world. Were it there were more like him, that his fate shouldn’t be this dark.”
Glorfindel nodded, “Go to him, Elladan, give him strength to remain in a world that’s hurt him”
As his brother departed Elrohir hesitantly met Glorfindel’s gaze, “We will deal with you later. Now get out of my sight before I do something I might regret.”
Scrambling to his feet while touching his hand to his burning cheek and the other to his bloody nose, Elrohir cleared the scene faster than expected.
Elladan moved into the healing wing, watching as his father and the other healers packed up their things, “Ada? Is he… Will he be alright?”
Lord Elrond looked at his song, “Legolas is weak, whether he makes it now depends solely on if he wants to make it. Only time will tell”
Elladan moved to the Elf for a moment before rising and finding a bucket that he filled with warm water as he began washing the blood from the Prince’s hair, cleaning it from his arms and face, “Please come back to me Legolas, I am so sorry… I should’ve believed you…I can’t believe I was this stupid and didn’t see sooner… Please… please don’t die”
With Legolas’ situation stabilized and Haldir’s attempts to create equal bearings with his own health and strength the situation slowly progressed and all too soon Haldir was back to his old self, “I must go to him” but Lord Celeborn told him he could not, that Legolas could never know of this.
Legolas couldn’t be with him. No King-to-be could be with a mere Marchwarden.
Dejected, Haldir sat back down. /I love you, poikaer. I do not know what caused you to attempt this, but I cannot live without you./
Though it was simply the truth because one couldn’t survive if their soul-bound partner died, the meaning was greater than that. Even if not for the bond, Haldir couldn’t think of living without the golden-haired Elf somehow in his life. Even if they were worlds apart.
It was two days before Lord Elrond declared Legolas’ safety, but despite this the emotions weren’t overly excited. Everyone felt disappointed in Elrohir, didn’t understand his unnecessarily cruelty.
It didn’t keep Elladan from Legolas’ side, despite his brother’s pleas to talk Elladan didn’t move and Elrohir wasn’t allowed near.
Elladan gently brushed his fingers through Legolas’ hair, “Please open your eyes my sweet prince, return to us… to me”
As if awoken by those words, Legolas’ eyes gained awareness as a look of confusion spread over him, “I’m not dead?”
Elladan shook his head, clutching the Elf’s hand gently, “I’m glad to say you are not”
A frown crossed the prince’s features, “I can’t even kill myself and succeed. What a failure”
Elladan pressed a light kiss to Legolas’ lips, “Don’t say such things. You shouldn’t have attempted it. What would I have done without you?”
Legolas frowned at him, “You… you told me..”
Elladan nodded, “I know… I was stupid. I know it wasn’t so… I knew even then… I just… By the Valar, Legolas, I just really care for you a lot… It drives me insane with jealousy… I cannot help it… You are so beautiful…. I am sorry for doubting you, my sun”
Though the words warmed his heart, the prince wasn’t keen to accept the apology, “You say that now, but what will you do when… if such a thing would happen again? You thought me a slut, nothing more than that. You thought… you thought the stories were true!”
Anger replaced sadness as it overwhelmed the prince, “Get out of here. I do not want the false affections of one who is so ready to accuse and doubt me”
/I wish you were here Haldir, I wish I’d never left…/
The Marchwarden smiled as he heard the voice he now knew to belong to Legolas himself and wasn’t imagined /As do I, poikaer, but it shall be alright. You can get through this. You are stronger than you think/
The thought added to the resolve the prince felt, “Leave me now. Perhaps at a later time I shall be inclined to speak with you”
The words weren’t as heartfelt as he said them, but even while Elladan looked stunned for a moment and got up and left, Legolas knew he made the right choice.
It was Glorfindel who came to him next, “Prince Legolas”
Legolas inclined his head lightly in greeting but Glorfindel spoke again before he could utter a word, “My apologies for not… I should’ve known, should’ve stopped it”
Legolas offered a light but bitter smile, “I’ve lived thousands of years with people –including my own father- not aware that my guards took advantage of me on a daily basis. I can assure you, you are quite forgiven”
Glorfindel frowned at the words but didn’t indulge Legolas’ bitterness, “I’ve arranged for you to have a new chamber, it’ll be next to my own. I will not disturb you or ask your time other than in training, though you’re free to my time whenever you need it. It shall be saver for you there against such unwanted intrusions. I know it doesn’t make the incident go away, but it should at least ensure it is only that, an incident.”
Legolas nodded in gratitude, offering a light smile, “I’d like to start the training…”
Glorfindel smiled, nodding, “And you will, very soon, but first you must recover your strength”
The prince nodded once again before he looked away, “To think I was nearly dead over … over that. It wasn’t worth it. I’m glad you found me… but… but how did you know?”
Glorfindel pondered this, Lord Elrond had been firm in stating Legolas mustn’t know of his connection with Haldir –though the lord hadn’t seemed pleased with that- and so Glorfindel had to think of an excuse, “Lord Elrond seemed to think there was something amiss. I believe it might’ve been his gift of sight…”
Legolas seemed at ease and satisfied with the explanation and so Glorfindel stood, “For what it is worth, prince Legolas, we are all truly sorry for what transpired… Elladan most of all”
The prince nodded, but seemed otherwise unimpressed as the Balrog slayer left the scene.
/I should never have come here. I need to leave/
Despite own determination, that voice -Haldir’s voice- rang out again /First you must learn all you can from those who would teach you/
It was true, of course. That had been his purpose.
He didn’t need Elladan’s excuses or his affection. He’d learn what he could and be off.
It would work out.
