newfound friends

Chapter twenty newfound friends

Isil’s rays illuminated the sky as did the light of the many stars. Elrohir smiled as he watched the silver light touch the valley. He had been unable to sleep and after tossing and turning in bed for a while he had got enough and left. He was now aimlessly wandering about the corridors.

About to turn another corner he stopped when he saw a silhouette in the garden. Another had been unable to catch any sleep, or so it seemed. Elrohir quickly, but silently, made his way down: he wanted to get there before the mystery-elf had vanished but he also didn’t wish to startle the other.

He was surprised to see blond hair fanning around, caught in the wind’s gentle breeze. He knew only two elves with blond hair here and one was currently asleep, he had just crossed Glorfindel’s sleeping room, and so he knew his presence was known. Legolas would never be sneaked upon. He wanted to speak up, but he did not know what to say. At times like this he wished he was his father, who always seemed to know just which words to say.

Legolas spoke without turning. “Aren’t you going to sit down?”

Blushig, Elrohir walked closer to sit down besides Legolas, who turned his blue eyes towards him. He swallowed before voicing his mind. “I am surprised to see you here, Legolas. Shouldn’t you be sleeping? Surely there’s nothing keeping you from sleep here?”

But Legolas shook his head. “Something is wrong, and it keeps me up.”

Elrohir’s face became one of worry. “Wrong? What do you mean? Don’t tell me Mirkwood is in danger.”

Now the blond smiled. “No, nothing like that. It’s just that…” He trailed of, unsure whether he should, or could, tell Elrohir or not. He did not want to insult the Peredhel, nor did he wish to scare him should he not know. But his silence scared Elrohir more than words could have done. “For Valar’s sake, Legolas, what’s wrong. We can help you know.”

Legolas smiled at Elrohir. Gentle eyes met his own and something inside him warmed. “It’s just that I do not wish to be insulting, nor do I want to scare you.”

“To late for that, I’m afraid. You already scared me, and if you do not tell me I -will- take it as an insult.” A pearl laughter erupted at this response. “Well, I’m just curious what’s going on here.” Legolas finally said. “Your father seems absentminded and, well, I don’t know.” He found it hard to put his feeling into words. But Elrohir put a hand on his shoulder and smiled. “You are very perceptive, my friend. Something is amiss and I speak for all when I ask you to keep your findings to yourself. We hope it will soon pass.” Elrohir’s words hit something inside Legolas and he snapped his head around. Elrohir misinterpreted the movement. “I am sorry, but I can’t tell you what it is. But it -will- pass.” He only hoped it would be the right outcome for all.

He rose. Elrohir could not keep up his mask for much longer. He already had to force his tears back. But Legolas held him down. When Elrohir’s questioning eyes locked with his own he felt his heart beat faster. “Ar man ná raica yo lyë?” Elrohir laughed and Legolas blushed. “Aiya, I made mistakes. I hardly get the change to speak it often since my kin at home all use Sindarin.”

Elrohir stopped laughing and blushed himself. “Methinks you should brush up your Quenya then, my friend. I apologize, it was tactless of me to laugh.”

Legolas waved the apology away. “Pray tell me : what -did- I say?” But this time it was Elrohir who waved his hand. “You’ve got the meaning right, you just used a non-existing word I’m afraid. Lyë is only used as a suffix behind a verb. And yo is a prefix.”

Legolas nodded. “So how should I have said it?” Elrohir sat back down and smiled. “ ‘Ar man ná raica yotyë?’ or ‘Ar man ná raica anwa te?’ ” Legolas used his eyes to tell Elrohir he still needed an answer to that question. Instantly the smile faded and Elrohir’s good mood vanished like snow melting in the sun.

When Legolas saw the tears make their way down Elrohir’s cheeks he cursed his curiosity and he quickly enveloped the Peredhel in a tight embrace. “Now it is I who has to apologize to you. I did not mean to…” Shock made him stop speaking as Elrohir flung himself at Legolas.

Everything now came out, all the pain he had been holding back for centuries and all the new pain as well. It was too much. Legolas didn’t know what was wrong, but he pulled the younger twin closer and started a rocking motion. He did not speak a single word, he didn’t think Elrohir was in need for comforting words. He merely sat there, holding and rocking his friend. He could ask his questions later.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Elrond sat upright in bed, his hand reaching for his heart. He wondered why he had awoken. If it hadn’t been a nightmare, somehow he knew that. About to wipe some stray hairs out of his face he realised his hand’s position and wondered why it was hovering above his heart. Suddenly his heart contracted painfully, making him hiss. He now had his answer, but he also had a new question. Why was his heart paining him so?
He wanted to get out of bed to make himself a potion but his entire body hurt. He could feel all the muscles in his body and wondered what was wrong with him. He lay there in the dark, and thought himself insane as he heard horses hoofs in the corridor. Elrond shook his head to get rid of the noise. ‘Elrond, you fool, this is a house, there are no horses walking in the corridors.’ But his ears didn’t listen to his mental berating. Hoof-sounds kept invading his hearing and Elrond would have gone insane had his door not cracked open and showed Linyenwaer on the threshold.
Elrond looked surprised to see him, but the deer continued to walk inside. Now Elrond gasped in horror, for Erestor was hanging onto it’s side, Linyenwaer’s support the only thing holding him up.
Erestor could barely lift his head and for the last meters had been unable to move his legs. It had been his fortune the deer had been there to catch him as he had collapsed and lead him to Elrond otherwise Erestor might still be laying on the floor, dying; most likely.
Elrond ignored the pain in his own body and jumped out of bed but nearly fell down on the floor.
The deer continued to walk inside. When he was besides Elrond he nudged Erestor, who lifted his head. Seeing Elrond he reached out his arm. As Erestor made the movement, Elrond could feel his muscles hurt. He now understood what was happening. He could feel Erestor’s pain, but he did not know why Erestor was in such agony.
He grinded his teeth as he supported Erestor to the bed. When they were both on the bed he could not suppress a relieved sigh. He heard Linyenwaer turn and spoke. “Thank you for bringing him, my friend. Please tell Elladan to get some books. I need to know what’s happening.” Linyenwaer turned his head, showing he had understood. Elrond could care less. He was too concerned about Erestor. “What happened?”
Erestor tried to lift his head, but Elrond told him not to. “I don’t know. Pain, everywhere. Just suddenly happened. I don’t know. Am I dying?” All though his voice was laden with fear Elrond could detect the tiniest hope in it as well, which surprised him. “No, I don’t think so, Erestor. I can feel your pain and it’s getting less.”
Erestor was about to ask how Elrond could feel his pain but then instantly knew the answer. “The bond.” A single tear made it down his cheeks. Elrond felt it fall on his robe. “Erestor? What is it?”
“I’m so tired.”
“Then sleep.” Sleep would heal him, so it sounded logical to Elrond. But Erestor shook his head, instantly regretting the motion for his head pounded. But it showed him Elrond had spoken the truth for he would also hear the half-elf hiss. “No, I can’t. I’m afraid I might die.”
Elrond continued rubbing the distressed elf. If Erestor didn’t move his limbs, they didn’t hurt and he was able to use them. It greatly surprised him, but he made sure to keep his voice calm as he spoke. “You won’t. Sleep is not death.”
“How can you be so sure?”
“I feel it.” That sounded plausible, but still Erestor refused to rest. Elrond could feel his confusion. “What is it, Erestor?” His voice was one that demanded an answer.
“I can’t take this anymore, Elrond. What’s happening to me, I mean. I wanted to die, I still do, but you stopped me and now I can’t anymore, for I will take you with me.”
“You would have taken me without the bond as well.” The words were out before Elrond had realised he said them and instantly prayed Erestor hadn’t heard. He thought he was in luck as Erestor remained silent but Erestor did hear.
He had heard the admission and instantly knew what it meant. He didn’t say anything nor did he do anything, he merely lay there thinking about everything. So much now made sense. As he lay there thinking his pain got less and he was asleep before he knew it. Elrond, no longer feeling the pain either, soon followed suit.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

He groaned as he heard a knock on his door. Softly grumbling he made his way to the door and threw it open. “Man sí?!” he shouted the words, which were immediately followed by a large yawn.

Elladan smiled. “Apsenat ni prestien te, Lindir, er méran maquetsenë hoan man carinten epë.” When Lindir’s face showed no sign of knowing what the other was talking about Elladan clarified: “Forcing you to play your instrument. But it just sounds so lovely, it’s a waste not to let others hear it as well. And I wanted to hear it again.” The last sentence was a mere whisper and if Lindir hadn’t been so sleepy he would have heard. But now all he did was wave the apology away, yawning again.

It was now that Elladan realised he had woken the other up. “Aiya. Tápin olorilya. Forgive me, I did not realise. I will leave you.” But Lindir’s hand stopped him from turning around. “No, Elladan, it’s all right. You look troubled, what is it?”

Elladan shrugged. “Elrohir. Something is wrong with him, but I can’t put my finger to it. I….I just don’t know.”

Lindir nodded. “I was about to go for a walk, care to join me?”

Elladan looked disbelieving, pleased that the dark corridor hid his features. He knew Lindir had no such plans, not if he had just been woken up by him. He smiled when he realised this was Lindir’s way of offering support. “If you don’t mind.” He was actually looking forward to another walk with this highly mysterious elf. The more Elladan got to know him, the more layers there seemed to be.

Lindir turned and invited Elladan in. “Just wait a second while I change.”

Elladan sat down on a chair and looked around curiously. Lindir’s room was simple; no fancy decorations on the wall, but it made the room seem larger and more spacious than boring. Elladan saw the light and warmth would be provided in winter by a comfortable looking fireplace with several rugs in front and lots of single candles. He was still looking at them in wonder when Lindir came back from his bedroom. “I enjoy sitting in front of the fire, I make my best songs there. And the single candles are more relaxing to me than seeing several of them standing in a candelabra.”

Elladan smiled. “It certainly looks more cosy.” He rose and made for the door, but Lindir shook his head opening his balcony door instead. “This is my favourite way to go to the gardens. Come.”
