These smile-evoking silent lips
Will never speak a word again - forgive me
(Diorama - Kain's Advice)
They were heading towards Minas Tirith. Usually Legolas would have been two steps ahead of them, checking the area for orcs and other foul creatures. But not this time. The beautiful Elven Prince didn't even pay much attention to what was happening around him. Grief had taken hold of the Elf, a venomous potion, slowly killing him. But Legolas didn't fight it. He most welcomed the nearing death. There was nothing left for him in this world, in this life. His life had been torn asunder. His soul broken, his heart pierced. There was no will to live anymore. A nightmare he'd never wanted to live through had become true. Haldir, March Warden of Lothlórien and Captain of the Galadhrim had fallen at Helm's Deep. Legolas had not only lost his friend and lover that night. He had lost his soulbond. His counterpart. The one the Valar had chosen for him before he was even born.
His soul craved for its counterpart. For its one and only completion. It cried out into an unknown darkness, but where once a bright and burning promise answered the calls, only darkness and pain now responded to the sweet pleas.
His mind was very well aware of him requiring the Elvish healing ritual, and it knew that Aragorn was capable of doing it, but the young Elven Prince fought against all reason and sensibility. He didnant ant to live anymore. Not without Haldir. And he also very much doubted that Aragorn would grant him the healing ritual once he'd learned that his former lover and friend was Legolas' soulbond.
Legolas felt a gentle hand on his shoulder when Gandalf rode up to him. "Won't you tell him, Legolas?" Gandalf sounded worried. "Won't you at least tell him why you deny him the comfort he yearns for?"
"What is there to tell?"
"Everything. You know that Aragorn can do the healing ritual. Do you really think he would deny you this once he learns the very nature of the bond Haldir and you shared?"
"You know why I can't let him do the ritual."
"I know your foolishness," Gandalf said a bit harsher than he meant to. He took a deep breath and continued in a gentler voice. "Do you really think Aragorn would condemn you?"
"No, he won't. But I don't want to destroy the last memory he keeps of Haldir. And I don't want him to see what he is going to do to the Evenstar, shall he ever bind himself to her. As for me - there's nothing anyone could do. The one that could is dead. In time, I will follow my bond into the Halls of Mandos. I only want to outlive the war. After that, I will lay myself down to die."
"Arwen's choice shant be discussed here. She knows what awaits her when Aragorn's time has come. But Aragorn can't cope with the death of both you and Haldir."
"With my death - I think he can cope."
"A po the the stiff necks of the Elves! But Aragorn does not deserve this. What memory could be so precious to him that he would rather see you dead?"
Legolas gulped. Too vivid were the memories he himself kept of Haldir. "Haldir died with the words 'díhena-nin, melethron-nín'. Aragorn believes that Haldir asked him for forgiveness."
"And you'd rather die than tell Aragorn? Fool of an Elf!"
Legolas dropped his gaze. He couldn't meet the eyes of the Istari. Yes, he would rather die than telling Aragorn. But not out of mistrust for the human or because he feared Aragorn's reaction, but for longing for his soulbond.
"Do you really think Haldir would want you to give in? To die?"
"No," Legolas admitted. He wouldn't have wanted Haldir to die either if he - Legolas - would have fallen to the axe of an Uruk-Hai.
"Let him heal you, Legolas," Gandalf suggested gently. "Let him save you. You know he can and you know you have to. To honour Haldir. If you lay yourself down to die everything Haldir had fought and died for will be in vain."
Legolas glared at the wizard. Gandalf smiled, knowing that he had been choosing the right words.

The companions had set camp outside a small forest. There'd used to be friendly banter and happy chatter whenever they had set camp before. Before the horrors of Helm's Deep and Orthanc had struck the Fellowship hard. Now there was only silent working, and empty phrases were spoken. Every one of them sought comfort in solitude, so Aragorn volunteered to take the watch for the night. Legolas followed the ranger to his watch post, not approaching him yet. He watched him a few moments, hurting at the pain that lined the handsome face. Maybe Gandalf was right and he, Legolas, was a selfish fool, closing his eyes before the grief his friends where suffering from.
Legolas stepped out of the dark strolling towards the ranger.
"Take some rest, my friend," Aragorn said quietly as he saw the Elf approaching him. "We're all weary with sorrow and guilt."
"I can't rest, Aragorn. Not now. Not then. Never again," he added, barely audible.
"I wish I could've spared you the horrors of Helm's Deep."
"When I joined the Fellowship I was very well aware of what war's horrors await me," Legolas lied with a proud tilt of his head. He didn't want the ranger to see him weak, though he was reminded of himself never being ready to lose his bond in this war.
"Have you awaited the death of your own kin? Of a friend?" When the Elf didn't say anything in reply Aragorn sighed. "I think I have lost more than a friend that night. May the Gods forgive me for betraying Arwen's heart." He buried his face in his hands. "He asked for forgiveness before he died. But what is there to forgive? I do not know."
Legolas gathered the ranger in his arms. Soothingly he ran his hands over this strong back that writhed with every sob leaving the ranger. How could he turn away from such grief?
"Tell me about him," Aragorn requested when his tears subsided for the moment. "Tell me everything about him. Tell me everything you know. I wanted... I very much hoped... that there would be a time after the battle... but there will never be a time... will there?" The human searched for the wisdom he used to find in the Elf's once star-lit eyes, but was taken aback by the sorrow and grief he saw in the sapphire-blue pools. "Legolas..."
"No, there won't be a time for hope and want, my friend. The only rescue is death." He brushed over the stubble cheeks of the human he grew fond of over the years. "I'll tell you everything about him, Aragorn. Everything there is to tell. But... there is something... something I wanted to ask you for first."
"Tell me what I co foo for you, my friend. Don't be afraid to ask for anything. I'll do whatever I can to put your troubled mind at ease."
"I wanted to ask you... for the healing ritual..." Legolas now met the ranger's gaze openly. "I...I would have asked... Haldir... if he just could be here... with me... but... he will never return to me again..." Legolas averted his eyes, again ashamed of the tears he shed.
"You and Haldir were close, weren't you?" Aragorn suggested kindly.
Legolas kept his gaze down when he answered. "Yes. As close as Elves can get. Closer than you and Haldir could have ever gotten."
"What do you mean with that? Tell me... Please?"
Legolas met the ranger's eyes without hesitation. "Haldir and I... we are soulbonds."
Aragorn turned white. "You were bound to each other?" he whispered. "By the Valar! What have I done? What have I done to you?" Aragorn sprang to his feet and turned away from the fair creature that knelt on the damp ground. "Why didn't he tell me? I would've never followed him to his talan if I'd known."
"You would've resisted him to no avail, Aragorn. Haldir is a master of seduction. Sooner or later you would've given in. There's no way anyone can resist him once he lays eyes upon them. He didn't want to estrange you and me. He ed ted to heal your soul. Mend your heart."
Aragorn shook his head in disbelief. "He has betrayed you... I have betrayed you... I can never ever forgive myself for that..." Aragorn felt dizzy. He swayed. Legolas was at his side at once.
"Don't, Aragorn. Don't do that to you. You haven't betrayed me. Haldir hasn't betrayed me either. I was there. I was there when he made love to you. I was there when he died and asked both of us to forgive him. I am his soulbond. We still are soulbound. Sooner or later, I will follow him to the Halls of Mandos and either await the end of the world with him or be re-born into this world. My soul cannot linger here without him."
"Is there nothing I can do about it? Won't the healing ritual help you?" His eyes burned with unshed tears. "I don't want to lose you, Legolas. Not now. Not ever."
Legolas' heart grew heavy. He couldn't bear to see the future King of Men break before his eyes. To see him beg for Legolas' life. By the Valar! Who am I to deny him this plea?
Legolas lead the ranger to a tree and urged him to sit down. "Forgive me, my friend," he said in a low voice. "I'm selfish. Too stuck in my grief to realise. I'm sorry." He managed a little smile. "Haldir would call me 'Princeling' whenever I behaved like that. Perhaps he was right..."
Aragorn tucked Legolas to the ground. "You love him a lot, don't you?"
"He is the very reason I exist. He pictured the both of us to sail to Valinor and live happily ever after. He was a romantic."
"How did it come to pass that you joined each others souls?"
"That is a very long and sometimes sad story."
"Will you tell me?"
"If you promise to be patient with me? I am no storyteller."
Aragorn smirked. "We have the night, my lovely Legolas." He tugged his pipe out of his sleeve and lit it. "We have the whole night, indeed."
