Chapter Two:
The Fields of the Rohan.
Or, "the oddly coloured rock."
After a pause of a few minutes, Gimli the dwarf squared his shoulders as best he could and rearranging his axe a little more comfortably, set off after his companions. He fallen behind again and all he could see of them was the glinting of Legolas's hair in the distance.
They had found the leaf of Lothlórien the day before and were starting to gain on the horde of orcs.
Gimli prayed they would catch up soon.
He focused on putting one foot before another for the next few minutes, and didn't notice Legolas back track to him.
"Come on Gimli! Make haste!"
Gimli snorted and he muttered grumpily at the prince, "I'm a warrior! I stand my ground! I am not accustomed ta all this 'ere running is all!"
The elf smiled at him, shook his head softly and darted back to Aragorn, whose even gait had not yet faltered.
A chill breeze pulled at Gimli's beard. Before him the harsh rolling fields of the Rohan seemed to stretch out forever.

Sarah was cold.
Very cold..
VERY VERY cold in fact.
She tossed around and felt for her blankets, she must have kicked them of the bed again.
She could summon her blanket from her floor.. but that would require far too much effort.
Sighing she twisted herself into a tighter ball and tired to ignore the chill and go back to sleep
********
"How does Gimli fare Legolas?"
The elf glanced over at Aragorn, "well enough… for one of his kind."
Aragorn nodded.
Legolas saw his disapproval in the set of his face, though the man tried to hide it.
Sighing inwardly he set his eyes on the rugged terrain stretched out as far as he could see, which was, obviously, quite some way.
He knew he occasionally still let his dislike for dwarves slip into conversation, but he had been trying to stop it. He had been travelling with Gimli for sometime now and was growing rather fond of him. He did not like that Aragorn still thought he held unjust distaste for Gimli, and his kind.
He wasn't going to tell his friend that his mind had been changed about dwarves right this second however, he didn't feel like the teasing and ridicule he would no doubt face from Aragorn and Gimli.
Besides, Gimli still hadn't exactly admitted to them elves weren't as foolish as he had originally claimed.
He was occupied with such thoughts, rather trivial given their current circumstances when his sharp eyes glanced over a black shape some way ahead.
Had he been paying more attention, he would have noticed it sooner, far sooner. As it was, almost as soon as he saw it, Aragorn squinted into the distance, having spotted it himself.
"What is that over yonder Legolas? An oddly coloured rock?"
"I am not sure Aragorn. I would say not however. Perhaps a shrub, for it is quite small."
"well, we shall see soon my friend I suppose." Turning he looked back at Gimli who was jogging along valiantly, almost on par with them, "Gimli! There is something up ahead."
The dwarf nodded having no breath to reply.
It was several minutes before Legolas spoke again, "It is moving. I am certain it is not a rock or shrub. It could be a small person or an orc however."
Aragorn let a little hope shine threw on his face, "or perhaps a hobbit. i do not smell orc."
The elf nodded, "that is true."
They steadily moved closer to the figure, which they soon realised was a person lying with their back towards them, the brisk wind flicking their clothes. It was most definitely not a hobbit.
Gimil drew his axe just incase, as he was prone to do, and Legolas and Aragorn crept stealthily closer.
Legolas spoke again, "It's is a woman. What would one of the Rohirrim be doing out here?"
Aragorn, "I know not Legolas. I do not smell orc around, thankfully I do not think she was left by them."
The heavy breathing betrayed slumber and Legolas knelt behind the woman's back, turning her onto her back.
The first thing Legolas noticed was her scent. She must have been wearing a perfume, because as her hair rustled in the wind, he smelt a sweet mix of flowers and something fresh like the sea.
Before them shivering in her sleep, was what appeared to be a beautiful elven lady.
Legolas's eyes widened at the sight of her. At a glance she was akin to Arwen, with dark raven locks framing a delicate face. But her skin seemed to have more colour to it, and the feeble rays of sun that filtered down through the clouds set off flashes of red in her hair.
However lovely she seemed however, it was obvious that she was becoming ill with the cold. Her cheeks held no colour and her lips seemed almost blue.
The reason for this was obvious, for she was wearing next to nothing.
Though her clothes seemed very finely made, with a deep black tunic-like garment to her knees, her legs were almost completely bare. This in itself was very odd, even odder still was the fact that her legs appeared completely smooth and hairless.
Without realising what he was doing Legolas let a finger run along the curve of her calf.
Suddenly Aragorn spoke into his ear from where he had crouched down next to Legolas, "Mind you manners there friend."
He then looked intently at the girl, held a hand over her parted lips for a moment, then laid a palm across her brow.
"She appears to be simply sleeping"
Gimli "well, no orc would have left the likes of her unharmed! Reminds me of the Lady Arwen…But what is one of your kind doing sleeping in the middle of the wilds of Rohan Legolas?"
Legolas furrowed his brow slightly, "I am not sure she is of my kind Gimli."
The dwarf shrugged, "Well, She's a right beauty anyway! An bonnie gel if ever I saw one!"
Aragorn smiled briefly at the dwarf, "true gimli. Legolas, do we have anything that we could give her as a blanket?"
The elf took a moment to tear his gaze from the face of the sleeping girl and then he looked at Aragorn blankly for a moment.
"legolas?"
"Oh! Er.." The prince pulled his cloak from Lórien off and draped it over the sleeping figure.
Carefully tucking it under her so as to make sure she kept warm.
Looking back up, he saw Gimli smirking at him, "Oh ho ho! Looks like the young laddie's a wee bit ruffled by the gel's presence ey Aragorn?"
Aragorn grinned back at him, "Well now Gimlin yon you blame him?"
Legolas turned back to stare at the maiden again, "I am entirely unruffled. I am merely .. concerned…"
Gimli rolled his eyes, "surely you are."
Legolas did not look back at him however, for at that moment the girl had sighed, moved closer to him and was now resting her head on his thigh. He did not see the dwarf wriggling his eyebrows suggestively, he did however hear Aragorn sniggering slightly.
Rolling his eyes and trying to look unaffected he looked away again, "well Aragorn, what are we
to do now?"
********
Sarah was suddenly aware that she was much warmer.
The breeze from her open window did not seem so harsh. Smiling softly she snuggled into her nice warm blanket. Her blanket smelled very nice. Like spice and leather. Inhaling deeply she slowly felt herself drift towards consciousness.
She hadn't felt this comfortable for as long as she could remember.
Dimly she could hear the voices of the other girls in their dorms.
"Well, we cannot just leave her here Aragorn…"
She ought to get up, but her pillow was soo warm..
"Yes, obviously Legolas! I was not suggesting that, but if we stay here much longer…"
She was almost asleep again when something registered. She could her male voices, not girl ones.
For a few seconds she drifted between sleep and awakening, then suddenly everything came into focus.
She was wrapped in something warm and soft, which was surely not her own. She wasn't sure, but thought she was lying on grass? Had she fallen asleep outside?!
Then she noticed something else. Her pillow. Her lovely warm pillow. It was moving slightly.
"well why don’t we try and wake her? Could be she was just a wee bit chilly an taking a bit of a kip! Mayhap she'll be able to keep up!"
"Yes, or perhaps she lives nearby and can safely make her way home."
"Okay then, Legolas. Wake her."
She could heard three men discussing something in oddly accented English which didn't quite make sense to her.
One voice was thickly accented like she remembered her old Scottish grandpa's was.
The other was a deep english, noble sounding man, not unlike some of her father's 'friends'
And the third, who's voice seemed unnervingly close to her sounded like.. well.. she couldn't describe his voice. It was melodious and rich, and very nearly putting her back to sleep.
With a huge effort she opened her eyes.
For a moment she forgot to breathe. Staring directly down on her, looking a trifle shocked to say the least was a blonde, blue-eyed man. His light blue eyes were seemingly too bright to be natural, and his face was so attractive she wasn't entirely sure what she was looking at.
She stared blindly into his eyes dimly aware of long strands of golden hair tickling the side of her cheek.
He was gorgeous.
She inhaled deeply, feeling the sweet scent of his hair fill her breath.
Ah.. so THIS was the owner of the yummy smelling cloak.
At that thought she smiled slightly.
The man above smiled softly in return.
Then the gruff voice was heard again, "Well laddy!? Are ye jist going ta sit there all day staring? Is she al righ?"
Sarah turned to face the voice, briefly noting a handsome dark-haired, rather grubby looking man seated nearby.
Who, or what she saw next she could not comprehend.
There was a mass of red hair, beard and bushy eyebrows all a few inches from her face, slightly yellowed teeth with bits of gold glinted at her, and two beady eyes peered intently at her.
Also, the man.. midget.. what ever it was, smelt rather bad.
Sarah, refined young lady as she was, gave a little scream and bolted upright.
She had never seen anything like this creature before. It was horrifying.
She felt the man next to her stand and take hold of her arm, she roughly pulled it away.
Spinning around she saw the dark-haired man right behind her, with a sword at his side.
She turned again and there was the scary midget, whom, she now noticed, brandished a massive war axe staring up at her with his beady eyes.
Gasping she backed up a few steps, again running into the blonde man, she didn't need to turn around to know it was him, her keen sense of smell reminded her.
Her grabbed her around the waist pining her arms to her side, "Please! My lady! Calm down!"
She felt fear well up inside of her, she had felt she could trust this man, but now she was not so sure. Ignoring the pleasantness of his warmth, she yelled at him viciously,
"Do not touch me! Let go of me!"
To her surprise, he did just that.
She tumbled forward a step and spun to face him.
He had a sad look on his face, she could not bear to look into those deep eyes of his. Turning again she gathered up the cloak and sprinted as fast as she could away from the group.
(which was, might I say, rather speedy indeed)
Turning back once she saw the dark-haired man holding back the blonde man with a hand on his shoulder.
She sped up, her nimble feet flying over grass and stone.
When she looked back they were but specks even to her strong vision.
Without stopping to think she entered a forest and they were lost from her sight.
********
He watched the slight figure disaping ing over the rolling fields of Rohan towards the darkness of Fangorn forest.
The girl was undoubtedly the most beautiful he had ever beheld. And he was over 1000 years old.
Her hair looked like silk, partially restrained with little metal clips which failed to keep it from forming a rippling frame for her delicate face. He had longed to run his fingers through it's shining length. Her slighted parted lips had seemed very lush and soft to him as he gazed down at her.
She had to be elvish, her strength, and her astounding speed when she had ran. Yet in her features, whilst they were delicate and fine, they did not seem of the eldar. Perhaps she was like elrond, half-elven. But that still did not explain her eyes.
He had been trying to think of a gentle way to awaken the sleeping angel in his arms when suddenly her eyes had snapped opened.
For a moment he had stared at her in shock.
Her eyes were a cool shade of violet. But that was not the only thing that had caught his attention. Her irises were rimmed with silver, or so it seemed. He had never seen such eyes.
He had not realised such beauty existed.
She seemed to make Arwen Undómiel, and even Galadriel whom he had always regarded as the most beautiful of elves seem almost…plain.
He had to see her again.. he did not even know her name…
********
"Legolas? Hello!?… it's no use, you try Gimli."
"Oi! LEGOLAS!….. HEY YOU! ELF!"
Legolas shook his head, "pardon?"
Aragorn shook his own head, in amusement and pity however, "Ah, Legolas my friend, you remind me of myself sometimes."
"What do you mean friend?"
Aragorn smiled, "My reaction to Arwen was much the same.. although she did not scream.. and …I did not attempt to chase her across a field."
Legolas felt his cheeks burn, "I was merely concerned!"
Gimli grinned, "Aye, so ye said laddy."
"Don’t look at me like that master dwarf. If I awoke to your face so unexpectedly, I would be startled to!!"
"What!? Twas not! She took fright at your improper treatment of her obviously! You wood elves don't know how to treat a lady."
"What? We know far more of chivalry then the dwarves! That is surely true!"
Aragorn smiled, "Amusing as you two are, we need to continue. We still have many leagues ahead of us, and the lady, no matter how fair, has cost us time."
"But what of.. what of.. the lady?"
Aragorn smiled, "well, she seemed to know her way around when she ran so swiftly from you friend, I think she can look after herself."
Gimli laughed, "Undoubtedly! I am glad I have lived ta see the day a pretty gel ran away from the great, handsome, noble Prince Legolas. Ha ha!"
Legolas scowled at him them returned to his own thoughts. Less of the hobbits now, more of the girl.
