Behind the city the rest of the company waited for them with horses. Tall and slender figures in gray hooded cloaks stood up to greet Lord Glorel ael and Lady Arwen. The dark-haired elf halted in safe distano feo feel as comfortable as it was possible. The black head of his horse rested on his shoulder and snorted to his ear. And then it pushed him.
But at that moment Lady Arwen approached him. With a smile she offered him an apple and a strangle packet of leaves. He had never seen such food. He looked questioningly at her. "Lembas, our travel bread. One morsel makes you feel fed." So he opened the packet and bit the unknown food. It was not bad. No, it was delicious. His eyes widened in surprise.
"We will leave soon," a voice sounded behind him and took him in complete surprise. He did not hear Lord Glorfindel approached. A piece of the apple nearly went down the wrong way. Immediately he searched the blue eyes. They will leave then? So he is going to leave this part of his long life here behind. "Up to the saddle then. Let us see how good a rider you are."
The big dark eyes widened even more at that comment. "Come... it's easy." Glorfindel took his elbow and pushed him near to the mare. The unexpected closeness of Glorfindel's body made him feel anxious. Frightened, he watched as the pale hand took his one and raised it up to the saddle. "So the left hand here," the quiet voice behind him whispered. His heart throbbed wildly. He wished to run away. "And the right one to the back." Glorfindel led his hand to the right place and then he stepped back. "Now the left foot to the stirrup, and glance off and the right leg over the horse back."
Left to the stirrup? The pale hand hold the stirrup at one place so that he could put his boot full of holes foot in where it should be. He glanced off... He did not know how he mounted. Surprised he looked down at the couple. Lady Arwen was smiling at him while Glorfindel took the reins and led the horse for a few steps. Oh, how was it familiar to him! In dark eyes shined a flash of recognition. Oh, yes, he had ridden a horse, yet before...
The same recognition flashed in the sky-blue eyes that watched him. Glorfindel gave the reins to the dark elf. Pleased he nodded and then a few orders sounded in that strange language. His men stood up and mounted, long bows over their shoulders. They were ready to leave. Even Lady Arwen. Until Lord Glorfindel mounted his stalwart white stallion two of his men rode over the plain ahead of the city to the road. It took one to the forest.
The white horse with his master in hal halted next to the dark-haired elf. "You will ride next to me," Glorfindel addressed him. He smiled slightly and urged the horse the way his men left. The dark elf didn't think and urged his mare too. Yes, certainly he had ridden a horse before...
... But he was not used to it. They rode all the day non-stop and it was laborious. At the beginning of the ride he was watching the landscape but after some time and with the growing pain in his lower body he tilted his head and tried to concentrate only on the ride. When they slowed down he raised his head again to look around. They were in the forest and it was growing dark... Will they make a camp for the night?
Near the company he caught sight of the two men who ridden before them. They joined the rest of the company and all of them left the road. Not far from the road they found a brook where they stopped. The gray figures immediately dismounted and started to take care of the horses and to prepare the camp. In wonder the dark elf watched the fair-haired archers. There was something about them...
"You can dismount," Glorfindel's voice sounded beside him.
Dismount? Yes,willwill do it if only he could move... He looked at the noble man standing next to his horse. In surprise he held his breath. Glorfindel pulled his cloak aside and now the long golden tresses were flowing over his shoulders. Few locks were drawn from his face to the single braid. His eyebrow arched in question... He was... Lord Glorfindel... he was an elf. The dark-haired elf could not avert his eyes from the elegantly pointed ears. The elf... as himself. And now everything what was strange on the company was clear. The fair figures were elves. Even Lady Arwen. Just at that time he realized that her headstyle was unmade by the long ride and the points of her ears stuck out from her dark hair.
Glorfindel smiled at his surprise mirroring in those dark eyes.
"Come, try it," he called him again. And the dark elf tried to obey. But the sudden pain when he moved his leg completly paralysed him. Powerlessly he fell from the saddle. He closed his eyes in expectation of the hard fall. But nothing like that happened. He felt the strong arms caught him. And at that moment he was glad that his matted hair covered his face to hide the blushing. But Lord Glorfindel did not put him down to stand for was going to the fire instead. He raised his head in alarm. It was wrong!
He gasped at the pain when his feet touched the ground near the fire. Questioningly he looked at the golden-haired lord. What now? What should he do? Before Glorfindel could say anything Lady Arwen appeared.
"Come, there's no use for us. You must rest. Are you hungry? Why do I ask? Of course you are." She took his hand and led him to the other side of the fire where her sleeping place was prepared. Uncertain, the dark haired elf looked behind at Lord Glorfindel who watched them smiling. Really could he leave? To rest? But there was no other chance than to follow Lady Arwen who drew him behind her. The pain shooting into his body with every step drove tears to his eyes.
"Oh, Valar!" her gray eyes widened when she looked at him. "Come, sit down," she pointed at the blanket near hers and sat next to him. One of the elven warriors put three restless hairy balls on her lap while another one gave her evening meal. The dark elf startled when a pale hand offered him ... lembas. He looked up at the fair face framed by the long fair hair. It was so beautiful and the friendly green eyes sparkled. Uncertain, he raised his hand to take the bread and the flask with water. Still he could not believe his situation. He was among elves!
"I'm Arwen," the lady addressed him while taking the little bowl with some food for the puppies. "I'd like to know your name," her gray eyes watched him for a while. "But Glorfindel said you did not speak. Did you live with the humans for a long time?"
Confused the dark-haired elf shrugged his shoulders. A long time? Perhaps. How should he know what a long time meant for the elves. He lived on when the generations of the human families died so for human it meant a long time.
"What are the humans like? You know I would like tow tow them better. Often the strangers visit us but my father hardly allows me to meet them. I think he will be cross with Glorfindel because he allowed me to visit the market. It would be naive to think that he will not find out. He will because Glorfindel will have to explain our delay..."
He listened to her. He would like to know who her father was and what her relationship with Lord Glorfindel was. And where is ... Imladris? How far is that place? He would like to ask her so many questions. Disappointed he caught the puppy which tried to get on his lap.
"I think he likes you," Arwen laughed when the little dog started licking the back of his hand. "I will give him to you if you want."
He looked in her smiling gray eyes and caressed the soft fur of the small animal. The elves were strange. He had never met anybody so friendly. His eyes searched for Glorfindel. He would like to accept her offer but he clearly remembered the displeasure of the golden elf when he noticed that she had bought the puppies.
Like reading his thoughts she said: "Glorfindel's right that it was not very clever to buy them because we traveut wut who would resist? They are so adorable! So, this one is yours. What his name will be?"
He shrugged his shoulders.
"I think that could wait!" a grumble sounded above them. Frightened he looked in the blue eyes those were focused on the black ball of hair in his arms in displeasure. He did not hear Glorfindel approaching. "You should rest," he addressed Arwen.
"But I'm not tired," she raised her chin at defiance.
"Maybe you are not but somebody could be," the elvish words caressed Glorfindel's lips. The dark-haired elf tilted his head guiltily. It was clear that his new master was angry. And according to his experiences he knew that the punished would be the servant - him. Many times he licked his wounds after others had given vent to their anger.
Arwen stood up obediently and moved to sit at her sleeping blanket. When the silence lasted for a long time his dark eyes looked up at the elf standing next to him. He met the thoughtful look which tried to pierce the veil of his matted dark hair to his features. Glorfindel knelt next to him.
"Are you afraid of me?" Glorfindel asked the elf whose big dark eyes even widened. He could read the fear in them in spite of trying to hide it.
"I know it was too much for you today. But I promise that I will explain everything to you when we will be safe in Imladris and we will have enough time and peace. Of course only if you don't want to go anywhere else.
Exp
Explain? What will Lord Glorfindel explain? He frowned. 'Of course your duties, silly!' he answered his question immediately. 'There's no use for you! You know nothing!' an angry woman's voice sounded in his head. 'You are good only for one thing!' another voice, a man's one, joined. 'Only for one thing...' others and others voices repeated. He heard so many of them over the centuries! 'If I knew it before, I'd kill you myself!' another memory shrieked. What will he do in Imladris? Why did Lord Glorfindel buy him?
