Erestor awoke early, as was his want. This day he woke to the sound of snoring in his right ear, the sound that only the drunk can make. Carandhol was fully dressed still, boots and all, and lying on top of the covers, apparently the way he fell onto the bed. He reeked of wine and perfume. He groaned as Erestor moved from the bed to ready himself for the day. After dressing, Erestor tried the impossible task of waking the dead.
"Carandhol, it is time to awake," said Erestor loudly as he opened the heavy crimson curtains to let in the morning light. More moaning sounded from the bed along with the sound of a pillow being thrown in his direction.
"You need to be on the training grounds in an hour," added Erestor.
"Son of an Orc, Erestor!" cursed the sleepy warrior. "Stop your shouting!"
"Shall I start a bath for you before I take my leave?" asked Erestor trying to be helpful.
"NO!" yelled his husband, "JUST LEAVE ME BE!"
Erestor winced but did as he was told, quickly walking to his office to start his day.
He noted that Elrond’s adjoining office door was still closed, as no doubt his Lord was feeling the affects of last night’s merrymaking as well.
Sighing he began his tasks for the day.
Two hours later an angry Carandhol bounded into Erestor’s office.
"Why did you not wake me up?" He seethed adding, "Now I am over an hour late for the morning session!"
"I tried to get you up but you threw me out of our quarters, do you not remember?" Erestor told him matter-of-factly.
"Glorfindel sent a recruit to get me!" "ME!" he pointed to his chest.
"Do not do that to me again, Erestor!" hissed Carandhol through clenched teeth as he turned and left in a huff.
Elrond, in the meantime, had come into his office and heard every word that was uttered by the two.
Opening his door, he saw Erestor wipe a tear from his eye quickly as he stood to greet him.
"Good day, my Lord Elrond," Erestor stated formally.
"Good morn my dear counselor," answered Elrond. "Is all well with you?"
"Yes, yes, my Lord, everything is fine," lied Erestor.
The sound of running feet getting closer came to them as two exuberant, dark-haired elflings ran into their father’s office. "Ada? ADA!"they yelled in unison.
Elrond raised an eyebrow at the noise, "I am with Erestor my sons, and please lower your voices, this is not how we speak in our house."
"Sorry," they muttered but continued their tone of excitement. "Nana is taking us swimming today!" They began making swimming arm movements as they bounced around Erestor’s office. "Morning Restor,"Elladan half-bowed to the counselor, trying to do as Erestor and his mother had taught him.
"Good day, Lord Elladan, Lord Elrohir," nodded Erestor as he smiled at the two who were so full of life.
They giggled at Erestor’s usage of their title. "Morning Master Restor," bowed Elrohir, wobbling as his did so.
Celebrian smiled at the scene from the doorway. She nodded to Erestor who smiled back at her as he inclined his head.
"Come along now, and leave your Father and Master Erestor to the running of Imladris." Celebrian shoed her sons out the door, though not before Elrond went to her side to give her a quick kiss.
The twins ran back to their father and each hugged a leg and then waved goodbye to Erestor. Elrond smiled after his family.
"You are truly blessed my Lord," smiled Erestor at the happy little family.
"Aye, that I am," smiled Elrond back as he squeezed his friend’s shoulder.
Erestor was sitting at his place with Elrond and his family in the dining hall. They were awaiting a few more members to their table before dinner would be served. Elrond usually graced his household with a fifteen-minute margin to be seated. Elrond was about to signal for the start of the meal when a few more stragglers walked into the hall, including Carandhol and Glorfindel. They both bowed to their Lord and Lady and Glorfindel nodded in greeting to Erestor. Carandhol sat in his place next to Erestor and said nothing. Erestor decided to try and alleviate the strain between them.
"How was the rest of your day, Carandhol?" asked Erestor nervously.
Glorfindel, who sat across from them, smiled at the two, and was listening to their conversation as the first course was being served.
"Well, I kept feeling a little behind schedule… all day." And he glared into Erestor’s eyes.
"Too much merriment for you meldir," teased Glorfindel and Carandhol laughed heartily.
"Too much merriment for us all," agreed Elrond.
"Did you have fun swimming today?" smiled Erestor to the twins.
"Oh, yes!" they said together excitedly. "Nana said we swim like fish!" All laughed at their expressiveness.
"Next time, can you go swimming with us, Restor?" they asked with pouting eyes.
"Of course I will," answered Erestor, "if my scheduling permits it, that is."
This answer seemed to satisfy the twins as they smiled and resumed eating. Carandhol smirked for Erestor’s hearing only. "If your scheduling permits."
Glorfindel sat and watched his friend interact with his spouse. Something was just not right between the two. He couldn’t put his finger on it. He knew that Carandhol slept around at times and though it didn’t bode well with him, he would never interfere with a warrior and his mate. He did not understand why Carandhol did so, for Erestor was beyond fair, with that long silky raven hair, those chocolate eyes and full red lips. True, Erestor was not a warrior, but he was lean and fit and had the cutest round bottom he had ever seen. Where did that thought come from? He chastised himself.
Carandhol did his best to ignore most comments that Erestor threw his way and only responded with one-word replies. As dinner ended and all began to take their leave, Erestor reached out for his husband before he wondered off without him again.
"Carandhol, a word please?" asked Erestor after him.
Turning around, Carandhol glared at the counselor. "What do you want Erestor?"
Erestor walked up to his husband and gently touched his forearm. "I, I just wanted to ask for your forgiveness for this morning, I will try harder next time to awaken you."
Carandhol smirked, "I shall give you my forgiveness then."
"Th-thank you," smiled Erestor adding, "If you do not have any pressing matters, w-would you walk with me in the gardens?"
"I am about to meet some friends in the hall of fire for a card game, so not this night," answered Carandhol without a second thought.
"Come, join us," said Glorfindel heartily.
Carandhol laughed low. "Erestor does not play cards, he likes chess."
"Truly?" asked Glorfindel, "How about a game sometime?"
Erestor smile brightly, "I would very much like that."
Carandhol was none to happy. "Don’t worry my dear, I will come to our bed earlier this night," he crooned seductively, as he bent to place a kiss to Erestor’s lips. Erestor, embarrassed by Carandhol’s display, blushed fiercely.
Erestor walked alone in the gardens, and in finding a secluded spot near a small fountain, sat on the grass and stared up at the stars, thinking of the night’s events. What was Carandhol up to? Why did he go from ignoring him to kissing him like that in public? It had to be because Glorfindel paid some attention to him, thought Erestor. Carandhol deeply admired the reborn warrior. It was nothing that Erestor himself had done; he knew that deep within his heart.
He never thought that his life would be like this. Though he loved Imladris, his work, Elrond and his extended family, he always thought he would have a soul mate. Sighing, he felt a single tear fall down his face. One thing he did know, and that was that love should not make one cry every day.
