Our boat landed with a soft thud on
the rocky beach. I exited it slowly, my stomach still trying to calm itself.
“You shouldn’t worry yourself,
Merry,” Pippin said as we sat down by the fire, “Even the most stouthearted
sailors get seasick from time to time. Here,” He handed me a piece of our
lembas bread, “Perhaps this will help.” My stomach nearly turned on itself
again at the mention of food.
“I’m not hungry right now, Pip,” I
replied.
“Are you feeling well, Merry?
You’ve never turned down food before,” Pippin said to me.
“I’m fine,” I said, not meeting his
gaze. Meanwhile, the others had begun to discuss which route into Mordor would
be best for us to take. I stood and stretched.
“I’m going to get some more
firewood,” I said, and walked into the nearby forest. Soon after leaving the
sight of our encampment, another wave of dizziness washed over me and I had to
hold onto a nearby tree to keep from falling. I had been getting sick to my
stomach nearly every morning since leaving Lothlorien. I hadn’t the heart to
tell the others about this, lest I become a burden to them. It is likely I ate
something I did not agree with, and these bouts of sickness will pass soon. I
quickly gathered some nearby pieces of wood and returned to the camp. Upon
returning, I noticed something seemed a bit off.
“Where’s Frodo?” I asked. Everyone
began peering around. It was then we noticed that Boromir was also missing. A
worried expression crossed Aragorn’s face.
“We must find them,” He said to us,
“Split up, but stay on your guard for I don’t believe we are alone in this
forest.” With that, he vanished into the trees, followed soon after by Legolas
and Gimli. Sam ran off in another direction, calling Frodo’s name.
“Why did Frodo leave?” Pippin asked
me.
“I don’t know. Perhaps he just
needed a moment alone,” I replied.
“Frodo! Frodo! Boromir!” Pippin
called out, “I hope they’re alright.”
“I’m sure they’re fine. Perhaps
they…” Pippin’s eyes widened, his face paling, “What is it, Pip?”
“Th…that!” He yelled, pointing
behind me. I turned slowly, my own face paled. Barreling down on us were what
appeared to be orcs, but much larger.
“Find the halfling!” one screamed.
“Come on!” I said as I took
Pippin’s hand and ran off down a path. We dove for cover in a nearby bush and
waited for the creatures to pass us by.
“Is it clear?” Pippin whispered. I
peered out of the bush. As the last creature past our hiding place, I noticed a
familiar hobbit hiding behind a nearby tree.
“Frodo!” I called out. He turned to
me.
“Hide here, quick! Come on!” Pippin
said to him. Frodo shook his head, a sad expression on his face.
“What’s he doing?” Pippin asked me.
“He’s leaving,” I replied.
“No!” Pippin yelled, running out
into the clearing.
“Pippin!” I yelled, running after
him. I turned to my elder cousin.
“Run, Frodo! Go!” I told him. I
then turned to the new creatures.
“Hey! Hey you! Over here!”
“Hey! This way!” Pippin yelled as
we retreated. I saw Frodo run off as our enemies chased after us.
“It’s working!” I heard Pippin say.
“I know it’s working! Run!” I
replied. However, we were stopped in our tracks as another group of the
orc-like creatures charged at us, cutting off our escape. At that moment,
Boromir seemed to appear from nowhere and began fighting these creatures. We
drew our swords and tried to help. However, no matter how many were killed,
more came to take their places. Boromir took a white horn from his belt and
started blowing through it, the sound echoing throughout the forest.
“Run!” he yelled at us as he
stabbed another creature. We threw stones at the creatures in an attempt to
help him. In an instant, a long black arrow flew through the air and stabbed
Boromir through the chest. Time seemed to slow as Pippin and I watched, frozen,
as Boromir screamed in rage and pain as he continued to fight. Another arrow
hit Boromir, but did nothing to stop his attack. We were brought out of our
shock as a third arrow hit Boromir. With a loud cry, we took up our swords and
ran at the offending creature in an attempt to avenge our friend. Two other
creatures captured us as we ran forward and walked off with us kicking and
screaming. The last thing I saw as we left the clearing was Boromir’s body
falling to the ground.
