A Change of Course
The
Countess was happy enough to be in darkness again. And Fangorn Forest
was very dark, full of shadows and strange shapes and had a dank quality that
even Mirkwood did not have. "Does every forest on this world have
its own personality?” she asked Legolas, who only smiled in
response. They left the tracking to Aragorn as he led them sure-footedly
through the forest.
Gimli turned aside on noticing something on the
leaves. Taking a sample, he brought it to his mouth, tasted it, grimaced
and spat it out. "Orc blood," he said.
She smiled at him. "And, Gimli, how would you
know what orc blood tastes like?"
It tastes poisonous," he said gruffly. "I
was just seeing if we were still on their trail."
They traveled through the forest quickly; she was amazed
at Aragorn's skill. This forest floor was as difficult for her to read as
the rocky ground of Rohan had been. In the ground of Rohan, there was
nothing she could see; here, there was too much going on for her to read the
ground easily.
"These are strange tracks," Aragorn said, coming
to a stop.
'The air is so close in here," said Gimli, looking
around uneasily.
"This forest is old," said Legolas. "Very old. Full of memory." He looked
about him. "And anger."
The creaking and groaning of the trees was getting
louder. Gimli exclaimed in alarm and raised his axe, fearing an attack
from any direction.
"The trees are speaking to each other!" Legolas
exclaimed. He turned to look at the others, wondering who offended and
could not be surprised to see who it was.
Aragorn, also noting that Gimli had his axe raised, said
quietly "Gimli! lower your axe,"
gesturing with his hand.
Gimli did so. "They have feelings, my
friend," said Legolas gently. "The elves began it," seeing
Orenin's puzzled look. "Waking up the trees,
teaching them to speak." He looked over at Gimli and was not
disappointed.
"Talking trees," Gimli said in disgust.
Legolas and The Countess exchanged smiles.
"What do trees have to talk about, hm?" Gimli
continued. "Except the consistency of squirrel
droppings."
They had walked on only a short distance when Legolas
tensed and he quickened his pace to pass Aragorn. "Aragorn,
something is out there." They followed Legolas for a few paces; then
he stopped.
"What do you see?" asked Aragorn.
"The White Wizard approaches," Legolas said
softly.
"Do not let him speak," whispered
Aragorn. "He will put a spell on us."
The Countess was puzzled; she also sensed the presence in
the forest but... She saw that Legolas
had drawn an arrow, fitting it to his bow; Aragorn made ready his sword
and Gimli his axe. She frowned. "Legolas?"
"We must be quick," said Aragorn softly.
She was concentrating as hard as she could but still
couldn't make sense of what approached them. Her eyes widened and she
shouted "No! Aragorn! Wait!"
But at Aragorn's signal, the elf, dwarf and man turned to
face what had approached them from behind. But the Countess did not turn,
could not turn to face the light that had suddenly enveloped them all.
She stood between Gimli and Legolas, keeping her back to the light. She
heard Gimli's cry of effort as he threw his axe and heard Legolas's arrow
fly. But she was helpless and could not turn to face what was there, what
spoke to them.
"You are tracking the footsteps of two young
hobbits."
"Where are they?" shouted Aragorn.
"They passed this way, the day before
yesterday," said the voice. "They met someone they did not
expect. Does that comfort you?"
"Who are you?" challenged Aragorn.
"Show yourself!"
At that, the light dimmed a little but the Countess still
could not turn to face it, nor see who was there.
"It cannot be!" said Aragorn in a tone of
wonder.
"Forgive me," said Legolas and he knelt.
"I mistook you for Saruman." On her other side, she saw Gimli
bow from the waist.
"I am Saruman," said the voice. "Or rather Saruman as he should have been."
"You fell," said Aragorn, still trying to
comprehend the one standing before him.
And then she knew who it had to be.
"Through fire.
And water," explained Gandalf. He told them of his battle with
the Balrog. And by the time he had finished his story, his light had
faded enough so that the Countess had been able to turn and face the renewed Gandalf.
"I've been sent back until my task is done."
"Gandalf" said Aragorn.
"Gandalf? Yes,"
he said slowly. "That was what they used to call me.
Gandalf the Grey," he smiled. "That was my name."
"Gandalf," Gimli repeated.
"I am Gandalf the White," he continued.
"And I come back to you now at the turn of the tide."
Gandalf turned and started walking back the way they had
come, not looking to see if they would follow, knowing that they
would. "One stage of your journey is over; another begins. We
must travel to Edoras with all speed."
"Edoras!" said Gimli in surprise.
"That is no short distance."
"We hear of trouble in Rohan," Aragorn said to
Gandalf. "It goes ill with the King."
"Yes," said Gandalf, "and it will not be
easily cured."
"Then we have run all this way for nothing!"
Gimli continued. "how we can leave those
poor hobbits here in this horrid, dark, dank, tree-infested..."
The trees began their groaning again. "Ah," Gimli
amended. "I mean charming, quite charming forest..."
Gandalf turned. "It was more than mere chance
that brought Merry and Pippin to Fangorn. A great power has been sleeping
here for many long years. The coming of Merry and Pippin will be like the
falling of small stones that starts an avalanche in the mountains."
"In one thing you have not changed, dear
friend," Aragorn said with a smile for the new Gandalf.
"Hm?"
Gandalf said, half turning to Aragorn.
"You still speak in riddles."
They smiled and Gandalf said "A thing is about to
happen that has not happened since the Eldar days. The Ents are
going to waken and find that they are strong."
"Strong?" Gimli looked around nervously.
"Oh, that's good."
"So stop your fretting, Master Dwarf!"
Gandalf turned and resumed walking. “Merry and Pippin are quite
safe," he called back to Gimli. "In fact, they are far safer
than you are about to be!"
"This new Gandalf is more grumpy
than the old one!" Gimli said to the Countess and Legolas.
Legolas only smiled, happier than he'd been in some time,
feeling justified in his faith in the Valar. Merry and Pippin were safe,
Gandalf had returned to them and they were not now on their way to
Mordor. Orenin could not find what she sought and be taken from him now.
They came to the edge of Fangorn Forest.
Gandalf let out a loud whistle and a white horse appeared out of the distance
and raced toward them. Legolas said, awe in his voice, "That is one
of the Maeras, unless my eyes are cheated by some spell."
"Shadowfax," said Gandalf, greeting the
beautiful horse who had come up to and stopped in front of him. "He
is the Lord of all horses and has been my friend through many dangers."
Gandalf managed to keep a straight face watching Aragorn
help Gimli up onto Arod behind Legolas and they were off to Edoras.
