Title: Reading Between the Lines (2/?)

“Orophin?”
“Yes, Haldir?”
“Are you out of bed yet?”
“Of course! I have things to do today!”
“I am afraid to ask, but I will. What are your plans?”
Orophin stepped through the doorway, still tying up the laces in his tunic. Smiling he said, “I am going to spend some time over at the library, I think.”
Sighing, Haldir looked over at him. “Remember what I told you, be careful.”
“Please, I know he is Elrond’s head advisor. But that is not going to stop me.”
“Erestor might try.”
“Oh yes, but remember this, dear brother, when I have him in my bed.”
“As you say,” Haldir said, rolling his eyes and going back to his own dressing. “I will also be sure to remember this conversation when you come back here one evening with your most intimate parts in a bag, removed by one dark haired elf and his quills.”
“You have no faith in me.”
“I do, only not in this matter. There is much you do not know about him, Orophin.”
“But I wish to learn.”
“Learn quickly and keep your distance.”
“What do you mean?”
“I mean… Orophin, just back off a little. Do that for me?”
“Why?”
“He is not interested in you. His feelings are for someone else.”
“He has a mate?”
“No, he does not. He desires someone who does not desire him, but much like you, he is intent on that someone and is not allowing anyone else through. No matter how attracted he is to anyone else.”
“It is not you, is it, Haldir?”
“No, it is not. And it is not Elrond, either. Who it is is none of your business. Just do not get your hopes up of winning his heart. He has been pursuing this elf for a very long time, and you will not convince him to give up the chase.”
“If this elf has shown no interest, maybe it is time for him to move on.”
“Maybe so, but he does not believe so. And in any light, why would he give up on him for an elf that is eventually going to leave? Think about it, Orophin.”
“Long and hard, brother.”

Orophin poked his head into the library and glanced around. He noticed a younger blonde elf sitting at one table, writing as fast as he could and surrounded by a large pile of various books. But other than this elf, he could find no one else. Stepping inside, he tried to make himself look as if he was genuinely interested in the books and not there for unrelated reasons.
Walking up and down the rows of books again, he finally stumbled on the object of his hunt. Erestor was kneeling on the floor before some shelves, mumbling to himself as he moved books around from one place to another.
Orophin slowly approached and cleared his throat. Looking up, Erestor made no effort to hide his eye roll and exasperated sigh.
“You again? What do you want today?”
“I just wanted to say hello and see what you were doing.”
“Well, hello then. And I am trying to put these books back in order. Someone keeps messing them up. How hard is it to put things back exactly where you found them?” He stood and dusted off his robes. Orophin didn’t budge.
“Um, is there anything I can do to help you today?”
“Why?”
“Well… I am bored. And besides… I sort of like it here.”
“Really? You enjoy angering me with your flirting that much?”
“I am not flirting, I promise you. I only wish to be your friend.”
“My friend, you say? How can we be friends? We have nothing in common.”
“How do you know that?”
“I never have anything in common with warriors, which has been made perfectly clear to me.”
“But you do not even know me, Erestor. Maybe we have something in common, something we can talk about. Not all warriors are the same, you know.”
He looked the blonde elf up and down and sneered. “No, I can see that perfectly well for myself.”
Orophin turned as Erestor pushed past him, and followed. “Alright, maybe I am not as good looking as some warriors…”
“I did not say you were not attractive.”
“So you think I am attractive?”
“You are, but you are not my type.”
“And what is your type?”
“You ARE flirting with me!”
“I am not! I am only trying to learn about you, Erestor!”
Putting his hands on his hips and crinkling his nose, Erestor looked at him. “Odd way of showing it.”
“If you could only stop being mean and just talk for a little while we…”
“Why do you wish so badly for my friendship? There are plenty of other elves in this land for you to befriend, why don’t you…”
“SHH!” They both looked over, shocked, at the elf sitting at the nearby table. “I am trying to finish my work!”
“Well, if you did not put these things off, this would not be an issue. Do not do that to me again or your work will be a lot harder to complete on the steps outside!”
The elf smiled sheepishly and went back to his work. Erestor turned back to Orophin. “Where were we?”
“I believe you were busy telling me to get lost.”
“Yes, well. Get lost, then.”
“I am afraid I cannot do that.”
“What do I have to do to get you to leave me be?”
“Spend some time with me. Tonight.”
“Oh, no! No way! I am not going to spend a moment with you alone.”
“Why not?”
“Why should I?”
“Just give me a chance. If I still anger you after this evening, then I will stay away for good. But if I can make you smile at least once… then you will be my friend.”
“Why are you doing this?”
“As I said. I only wish to be your friend. I have a thing with trying to make everyone like me.”
“Everyone likes you, then?”
“No. But I try real hard.” He smiled.
Erestor rolled his eyes. “I will consider your request. But for now I have work to do.”
“When will I have my answer?”
“Oh… tonight. At evening meal. Is that alright with you?”
“Perfectly fine. I will see you then.”
“Yes, yes. Leave now.”
Orophin chuckled and watched as Erestor disappeared down another row in a cloud of black hair and cloth. Turning to leave, he nodded to the blonde elf and made his way for the outside.

“Orophin! Haldir said he had brought you along! Where have you been hiding?” Glorfindel smiled as he made his way to Orophin’s side.
“Not hiding at all, just trying to make some new friends.”
“Bored, I see.”
“Very. But things are getting a little more interesting. What has my brother been up to anyway?”
“He has some business with Lord Elrond. I believe he never comes to just visit.”
“Yes, Haldir does nothing without a purpose.”
“And I hear you are learning that way of living well. He says you have taken an interest in someone here.”
“Yes, I guess you could say that, although that someone is very disinterested in me. But I will not give up.”
“May I ask who you are pursuing?”
“Erestor.”
“Ah, yes. Very stubborn. He will do nothing he does not desire to do, and making him desire to do anything that is not related to his work is a difficult task. I believe that shall take up the rest of your time here, and any future visits as well.”
“I will have him by the time I leave.”
“Confident, I see.”
“Very. Mark my words, he will be begging me to stay by the time I leave.”
Glorfindel laughed. “Yes, well, I would not count on that.”
“I know he has his eye on someone else, but I plan to change that.”
“I am not sure of his love interests. But just the same. Good luck. I must be on my way. I will see you at evening meal.”
“See you then!”

Haldir sat next to his brother, already waiting for evening meal to begin. Orophin smiled at him. “Have you seen Erestor?”
“No, not today. Why?”
“I am waiting for his answer about spending the evening with me, and he promised to have an answer for me at evening meal.”
“So you made some progress?”
“Maybe. I am not sure just yet.”
They sat silently, watching the other elves file into the room and take their places. Orophin watched them enter, intent on catching Erestor as soon as he entered.
After several minutes, everyone began to settle down and prepare to eat. Erestor was nowhere to be found.
Glancing around the room, he searched the faces there thinking maybe he had missed the advisor slip into the room quietly. But he was absent, as he had assumed. Sighing, he smiled to an elf sitting across from him.
Elrond took his place at the table as the elves chattered away. He and Haldir began a conversation of their own, leaving Orophin to eat in silence.
Feeling a gentle nudge, Orophin looked over to Lindir, seated next to him, and smiled. “Forgive me, but I could not help but over hear that you were waiting for Erestor.”
“Yes, have you seen him?”
“Some time ago, in the library. But he told me then that he would be eating in his rooms instead of joining us for evening meal.”
“Why?”
“I do not know. He seemed rather flustered. I suspect he is just very tired.”
“Well, that may be so, but I have something to speak with him about.”
“You could always pay a visit to his rooms.”
“I may do that. Thank you.”
