Hope this chapter will continue to have you wanting to hug Haldir! Enjoy!
Chapter 21: Your silence kills me
There was little that could’ve hurt Haldir more than the prince’s silence. Even worse it was to watch Elladan shower kind affection upon his soul mate.
Orophin spoke to him, said it was alright to leave, but Haldir couldn’t. This was his life, his duty.
Haldir had known not to count upon ever having his love returned, not with another fighting so hard to gain it while he was forbidden to pursue it.
Meanwhile, the Half-Elf seemed beyond pleased and Haldir questioned his part in Legolas’ sudden disregard. /Why do you ignore me?/
The question echoed through Legolas’ mind as he rode on in silence before they had to abandon horses and proceed on foot /You do not care for me, I am but one of many. I shouldn’t have come/
The words were harsh, cruel almost and Haldir felt their full weight /Ask me. Ask me about it, so I may have the chance to assure you of my love. You were right to come to me./
There was a pause then silence as Legolas seemed to contemplate the words as he spared Haldir a single glance that was filled with pain but also wonder.
There was a chance.
Haldir wouldn’t pursue Legolas but he wouldn’t avoid him either… it had to be the prince to take the first step.
All too soon they stood before the Lord who sent Haldir a warning glance before he addressed the visitors and welcomed them.
It was Orophin who was charged with the task to see the guests to their talans.
/I will linger at the training grounds. If you have any heart toward finding truth, come to me/
The words caused Legolas to raise his brow, confused by the oddities of his own mind, before he followed Orophin as Elladan lingered with the Lord Celeborn to discuss matters.
Orophin looked at the prince, “What is your purpose in returning here?”
Legolas looked at the Galadhrim with mild hesitation, “I thought to ease mind, but now… I do not know if I shall be able”
The silver-haired Elf offered a light nod, “I know my brother isn’t necessarily a man of words, but he has missed you. If you manage, ask him about that letter you send him”
Legolas stopped, raising his brow, “He did receive it then? I had hoped perhaps it had been lost… He has not answered it”
Orophin nodded, “There are reasons he has not yet answered… but trust me when I say the letter has been well received and greatly cherished up to this day”
The Mirkwood prince didn’t answer beyond that, playing with the idea in his mind, “I… I will manage to find my way to the talan, ‘tis the same one as before, is it not?”
Orophin nodded at that, “It is, but are you certain you do not need me to accompany you? ‘Tis no problem”
There was another moment of hesitance before the prince shook his head, “I am certain, hannon le, Orophin”
The brother bowed his head before leaving the prince who detoured to the training grounds where ‘lo and behold he found Haldir, “Haldir?”
The Marchwarden looked up, stunned, as though he hadn’t at all anticipated Legolas’ presence, “Legolas”
Legolas bowed his head, “I need to ask you… a few things.” When the Marchwarden simply nodded, remaining silent in expectance Legolas continued, “Is it true that you take virgins to your bed only to discard them after?”
Haldir seemed to consider the question carefully before he sat down, suggesting this would make for a long story and so Legolas joined him on the grass as the Marchwarden began speaking, “Centuries ago I was not the man I am now. I did things I am not proud of. ‘Tis true that I took virgins to my bed, but they were never absent the knowledge that it would be no more than a night, because I hardly knew them well enough to speak of love. I see now, of course, that in doing so I must’ve hurt more than a few, mostly those who thought perhaps it would be different with them, that I would feel the love… It is why I made sure it was but a single encounter, so that I wouldn’t give them hope that there might be more. Some didn’t take that very well”
Legolas parted his lips to speak, but Haldir beat him to it, “There have been many times where I wish I hadn’t chosen that path, that I’d gone about it differently, maybe that I should have given a few the chance to see if perhaps there might have been more… but then I became a Marchwarden and those incidents grew less and less until they were none existent and only those aware of my rules would take to my beds and abide by the knowledge it would always and ever be just sex. A means of releasing tension after a long day’s work. ‘Tis not something I’m proud of proclaiming… and in the last few centuries it’s only happened but a few times as I’ve become more selective, more focused… but there you have it”
The story made sense and the prince of Mirwood could do little to argue differently. One could not change their past and often the stories of the past –like his own- never left, “Why did you not tell me?”
Haldir smiled, “As I told you, ‘tis not something I am proud of… It’s part of my history yes, but ‘tis no part of who I am now.”
Legolas accepted that, knowing himself how the past could alter opinions, “What of me?”
The Marchwarden turned to the prince then, “I love you Legolas, more than you know”
Legolas’ brow rose in suspicion, “Then why did you not answer my letter? I was desperate to hear from you Haldir… but you didn’t answer? I now know you did get my letter, so that cannot be an excuse”
The Lothlorien Elf mumbled something under his breath that somehow seemed related to his brother before he looked at Legolas, “You and Elladan deserved the chance to see what it could become.”
The answer wasn’t entirely truthful, for it had been Lord Celeborn who had forbidden him from sending a reply, but the answer didn’t at all appease the Mirkwood prince who spoke softly, “Orophin told me you were glad to receive it, that you cherished it…”
Haldir reached into his tunic to produce the letter. It had coloured and wrinkled as time had gone by, carried ever over Haldir’s heart, but there it was, “It has helped me through many a lonely night”
Legolas blushed as he thought of the fantasies that had helped him through several nights as such, “I am glad to know it was well received”
His heart felt lighter now that he was next to Haldir. It was like he’d finally come home and every part of him was entirely at ease. Empowered by the feeling Legolas climbed unto the Marchwarden’s lap and claimed his lips in a gentle kiss that soon turned into one of need.
It took all Haldir’s willpower to urge Legolas back, “Not here”
He would not compromise the prince’s honour, “There’s too many who might pass by and catch a glimpse”
Legolas stood and but moments later they were moving to the prince’s talan but it was Lord Celeborn intercepted them beforehand, “Prince Legolas, Haldir.”
Legolas offered a light smile, in contrast to Haldir who looked mostly nervous, “Haldir was showing me to my talan, I told Orophin I would manage but I fear I have lost my way”
The Lord looked suspicious for a moment before he nodded, “Very well. Haldir, I expect you to report to me after you deliver our young prince”
Haldir inclined his head before the two moved on and Legolas pressed a light kiss to his jaw, “Why does he make you so nervous? I didn’t think the great Marchwarden feared anyone”
The Galadhrim smiled then turned to the prince, “The Lord prefers my focus solely to be set upon my duties.”
Legolas frowned, “I would prefer your focus solely on me, dear Marchwarden”
The words caused Haldir to grin, “You have more of my focus than you know, prince of Mirkwood. I shall find you later, if you wish, after I speak to the Lord”
Legolas nodded as he raised himself to his toes and kissed Haldir’s lips, “I shall await your return”
The wait seemed endless until finally there was a knock.
All but running to the door Legolas opened it only to pout when he realized it wasn’t Haldir, but his brother, “Oh…It’s you”
Orophin grinned, “I don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone this excited to see me”
Legolas blushed slightly, “Apologies… I was just expecting”
“My brother…I know, he wished for me to let you know that he cannot come, duty calls him away”
Legolas frowned, pouted, then nodded, “Thank you for informing me…I hope he returns soon”
Orophin nodded, “As do I”
After departing Orophin headed to his brother’s talan where Haldir was still face-down on the bed where he’d left him.
Orophin bit his lip at the sight of his brother, his back covered in cuts and blood from the whiplashes he’d received, his robes to speak of his station torn away and destroyed, “You should’ve left him be Haldir, look at you”
A light hiss was all the answer he received as Haldir tried to push himself up from the bed, “I cannot… I cannot break his heart, it’d be as if I’m breaking my own. He loves me too, Orophin. It was different when I thought his feelings to be but an infatuation.”
A cold cloth was touched to his back, soothing as Orophin cleaned the wounds before dressing them, “And now? Now you have nothing but a bloody back and a displeased Lord”
Haldir smiled, “And his love… I have his love”
But Lord Celeborn would never allow that to be.
Haldir wouldn’t listen, even whipping his most respected Marchwarden had resulted in nothing but leaving Haldir even more convinced that he should pursue the prince. That this was ‘love’ and it couldn’t be stopped.
But he’d see. Love was a fickle thing and could easily be destroyed.
Trust was everything and Haldir, well he’d kept a great secret from Legolas, hadn’t he?
Another knock to Legolas’ door and the prince was up again to answer it, “Lord Celeborn… What can I do for you?”
Lord Celeborn smiled, “I hoped to have words, prince Legolas.”
With a nod, Legolas stepped aside to let the Lord of Lothlorien in, “I hope there’s nothing amiss?”
Lord Celeborn shook his head as he took a seat, “I know you have convinced yourself you love my Marchwarden”
A light blush started to form upon the prince’s cheeks even as the Lord continued, “Were it anyone else, I wouldn’t have interfered, but as it is… you must know that what you feel are not your feelings. When he laid with you, your weakened soul connected to the strength in his and you were bound. Perhaps you have noticed this? Travelling thoughts? Lifelike dreams born from the bond itself?”
There was a light gasp, telling the Lord he was right as he went on, “One so young, so fragile, you couldn’t possibly ignore such a pull, but you must be aware… You must know that your feelings are not true, they are based on a lie and Haldir… though he is my best Marchwarden, I cannot say he is well-known for his fidelity. It is not too late to break this bond if it is overruled by another.”
Legolas frowned at the words, “I… I do not….”
Lord Celeborn raised his hand, “Worry not, I shall find you tomorrow after you have had some time to consider what I have told you.”
With that the Lord disappeared, leaving Legolas upset, confused and angry.
He counted to ten before he left his talan, storming to Haldir’s.
When he drew near he heard sounds, heard Haldir and groaning, sharp inhaling… ‘Duty calls him away’
Legolas anger merely increased to know he had been lied to yet again.
Driven by anger he stormed into the Marchwarden’s talan.
