Chapter 22: Mine
“HOW dare…. Haldir?”
Every bit of anger fled the young prince as he saw Haldir on the bed and discovered the reason for the moaning sounds he had mistakenly assumed were sounds of pleasure.
His hands moved up to cover his mouth, “What happened?”
The words were barely a murmur, but Orophin looked over at the prince as he started covering up the wounds Legolas had caught a glimpse of, “Haldir learned a lesson”’
Legolas’ brow furrowed in confusion, “Could you leave us?”
Orophin nodded and stood but a moment later, “I’ve finished dressing the wounds, I shall be back in a few hours to revisit the deed”
Haldir nodded, pushing himself up to that he could sit on the bed despite the obvious pain it caused him, “Who did this to you?” The question had been expected but Haldir chose to ignore it, “’Tis not as bad as it looks. What is amiss? You seemed angry when you came in…”
Legolas’ eyes narrowed briefly as he realized Haldir was avoiding the subject, “I thought you were…. With someone…”
Haldir frowned, reaching out his hand to the prince who moved forward and took it almost hesitantly, “I have been with no one since I’ve met you, no one but you. I know these are just words, but I ask you to trust them for they are true”
Legolas withdrew his hand from Haldir’s as he stepped away, “How can I trust you if you keep being dishonest?”
The Marchwarden looked confused, “Dishonest?”
Legolas looked at the Elf then, “We are bound, are we not? You… you haunted my thoughts, my dreams… My feelings… How do I know if they are my own? Perhaps you’ve merely instructed them, as you enslaved me”
Haldir stared at the Elf, completely dumbstruck at the prince’s assumptions no doubt put there by his Lord. It was moments before he spoke at last, “We found out when you attempted to take your own life and nearly ended mine with it. I didn’t tell you because our bonding had not been a conscious choice and I wanted you to… I thought you deserved the chance to decide if you loved me… for me, or if you would rather be with Elladan, not that you’d choose to be with me because of a sense of obligation.”
Legolas looked at him suspiciously, “Or did you simply intend to mesmerize me with these thoughts that I thought were mine? With those fantasies?”
Haldir frowned, hissing as he tried to stand up so that he could move to Legolas but on instinct the prince moved to him and forced him back down.
The Marchwarden sighed in frutstratio at the prince’s doubt, “I would never try and force you into anything, prince of Mirkwood. I heard your thoughts and wanted them to be happy, to be at ease… Those fantasies were mine as much as they were yours. Perhaps… perhaps I did take advantage by making the most of them, but Legolas… I love you. I couldn’t very well deny you what you sought as much as I didn’t want to deny myself. I am sorry I’ve ever made you feel as though you had reason to doubt my motives”
Legolas frowned, huffing in an attempt to hold unto this anger even though he found it hard with Haldir’s sorrowful words, “What happened to your back Haldir?”
The Marchwarden hesitated before he answered, “I cannot tell you. If you knew… it would change everything”
A knock interrupted them, “Haldir? We must speak.”
Haldir recognized the voice and to Legolas he seemed suddenly nervous, unnaturally so. /You have to hide. Please./
Legolas’ brow rose but he nodded anyway and slipped into the bathroom, leaving the door but slightly ajar so he could listen in and perhaps discover why his strong and fearless Marchwarden feared his Lord.
Lord Celeborn raised a brow at Haldir as he opened the door, “What took you so long, Haldir?”
Haldir bowed, hissing slightly at the pain causing the Lord to chuckle, “Ah, yes. That.”
Ignoring the Marchwarden’s obvious discomfort the Lord stepped inside, “I thought perhaps you had company. I was told the prince was no longer in his talan, but I see I was wrong. Good. I’d hate to learn you’ve disobeyed your Lord, your Master, yet again… and you wouldn’t do that, would you, Haldir?”
A light shake of the head and a softly spoken, “No m’lord”
There was silence for a moment before Lord Celeborn moved, trailing his hand along his Marchwarden’s arm, “’Tis a shame you have made me hurt you, but you should’ve known. You are mine to command, to control. I told you to stay away from him now that my Grandson has taken an interest, but you didn’t listen. No… No you made it worse, tying your souls together…You had no right. Your soul, your body, all of it is mine. It always has been, always will be”
Haldir lowered his gaze to the floor, ashamed at the words, ashamed Legolas had to know this, “Yes m’lord.”
The Lord seemed to look around for a moment and Haldir feared the worst, but then Lord Celeborn looked at him, “See to my needs, Marchwarden”
His brow furrowed as he looked up, a pained expression in his eyes but Lord Celeborn cut it short, “No I won’t be using your body Haldir, just use your mouth. We struck a deal so long ago, but now… now I must see to it that you remember your place. Make it quick, I need to see my Grandson. He needs to take Legolas and leave here, before you ruin any more of the plan.”
Haldir sank to his knees, speaking a soft, “Yes m’lord” as his fingers worked to free the Lord’s shaft from its confinements.
Meanwhile Legolas stood and stared in disbelief at what was going on. The words had offended, but what had stunned Legolas more was that Haldir clearly endured the same torture he had for years.
His strong, proud Marchwarden was treated no different than he had been.
Haldir still lived through it, he closed his eyes and fought back tears as he listened on, “It’s been years, this… has it not? See what you’ve made me do Haldir, I told you last time… no more, but look, you’ve gone and made it necessary, all these centuries later… just to remind you of your place. You seem to have forgotten that I paid for you and therefore you are mine”
The words echoed to him, reminded him of the things Maglor would say.
Angered, he stepped forward just as Haldir freed Lord Celeborn’s cock, “You stay away from him!”
The voice startled both Haldir and Lord Celeborn.
Haldir because he knew what it meant, Lord Celeborn because he was caught in an unspeakable act.
Lord Celeborn stepped back, covering himself up, “Prince Legolas, I do not believe you understand the nature of this event”
The prince shook his head, his eyes filled with anger even as there were tears falling along his cheeks, “No. I understand exactly what this is. It is of the same nature as what I have gone through… for so long. Get out. Get out while I still might accept this as ignorance or I swear you shall suffer for it.”
The Lord of Lothlorien bowed his head and turned to leave, but not without sending Haldir a vicious look that spoke of vengeance.
Legolas helped Haldir to his feet, embracing him tightly even as Haldir hissed at the pain before Legolas recalled the injuries and lessened the embrace, “I’m so sorry… I didn’t know…”
Haldir avoided eye contact as he spoke, “I told you… if you knew, it’d change everything”
The prince gently touched Haldir’s face, pressing a kiss to his lips, “That is why you … why you allowed me to go to Rivendell… and why you didn’t reply to my letter”
Haldir nodded slightly, “It is”
Legolas cried more tears for Haldir’s fate, “I understand why you didn’t tell me… I’m sorry I didn’t see…”
Haldir gently embraced the prince, still a bit in a daze at what had happened, at what that meant, even as Legolas went on, “He came to me, earlier, to tell me about… that we bound, he wanted to replace the bond for one with Elladan, he said it was possible...”
Haldir looked at him then, the hurt he felt at those words visible in his eyes, “You wanted to do that?”
Legolas bit his lip as he considered it, “No. He said that your feelings weren’t real, that my feelings weren’t my own… It made me doubt”
Haldir moved back to the bed to sit down, leading Legolas along with him, “A bond of the fëa doesn’t alter emotions that aren’t already there…Once aware of the bond it increases with need to be reunited when apart and if… if long enough it could cause the Elves to fade…”
Legolas thought back on how Haldir had appeared when they’d come to Lothlorien. Tired, pale… Legolas looked at him then, “Lord Celeborn said my soul bound to you because mine was weak and drawn to your strength”
The Marchwarden frowned at that, shaking his head, “When the fëa bind, it’s a sign of true, selfless love. It is beyond choice of either of the Elves involved unless the coupling is cut short at the time…Neither of us chose it, but our souls accepted it”
Haldir offered a light smile, “When I discovered that we were bound… the reason behind the discovery wasn’t happy, but it only strengthened the love I already felt for you, but was forbidden to feel”
Legolas gasped at the revelation, completely unaware of that entire story, “I didn’t know this…”
The Marchwarden smiled, “Regardless of that connection… I love you, prince of Mirkwood.”
Legolas smiled, too, pressing his lips to Haldir’s, “Those fantasies… you know about them?”
A light blush coloured the Marchwarden’s cheeks which Legolas thought was entirely becoming as Haldir nodded, “I know… I participated”
Those words drew a blush to the prince’s cheeks in turn at the news, imagining Haldir in equal pleasure as he had been over the strength of imagination alone, “I don’t believe I quite mind this… this bond”
Haldir smiled, forsaking all thoughts of duty and punishment at those words, “Stay here with me tonight”
A nod came and Haldir smiled as he moved to lay down before recalling his injuries and turning to his stomach, “This… Did he do this to you? Because of me?”
The words were soft, heavy with a sense of guilt but Haldir drew Legolas close next to him, “He did this because he wished to display dominance. He did this to benefit his Grandson. This is not your doing, nor your fault and I will not have you feel guilty over this Legolas”
The prince nodded and moved himself up and against the Marchwarden, “I love you Haldir”
The Marchwarden smiled, wrapping an arm around the prince, “I love you too Legolas… and if … I could decide, I‘d always be with you”
It was Orophin who interrupted the two, “Have you lost your mind Haldir? You know you cannot. You know the consequences!”
Legolas’ head whipped around as he looked at Orophin, “Lord Celeborn will respect my choice and Haldir will not suffer for it anymore. It is decided”
Both Orophin and Haldir looked at the prince in stunned amazement before Orophin grinned, “Not so shy and helpless anymore, are you, prince of Mirkwood?”
Legolas blushed at the words, then smiled, “It is time I start making my own decisions about my life, regardless of what others think about it.”
Orophin gave a nod, then looked at Haldir, “We need to redress those wounds if they are to heal properly”
Legolas smiled, “I can do that, too. If you do not mind”
The Galadhrim grinned again, shaking his head, “Not at all, go ahead. I shall see to keeping the other… visitors… occupied.”
His words weren’t necessarily heard as Legolas began removing the bandages and revealed the still angry, bright marks on Haldir’s back before he stood and slipped into the small kitchen area where he gathered several herbs that he mixed together before he applied the ointment to the Marchwarden’s back, “This will ease the sting and encourage the healing”
Haldir nodded wordlessly, biting his cheek to keep from making sounds of pain before all too soon the pain seemed to vanish as Legolas finished dressing the wounds and ended the process by pressing a kiss to Haldir’s shoulder, “It should help you rest more comfortably, too”
The two settled into a gentle, loving embrace of warmth and comfort until reverie claimed them both.
Meanwhile, Lord Celeborn and Elladan weren’t nearly as much at ease.
Elladan hadn’t seen Legolas since they’d gotten to Caras Galadhon and Lord Celeborn was frustrated over his plan backfiring and Haldir not only defying him, but lying. His pet dared lie to him?
It filled the Lord with a great rage, but he knew he couldn’t act upon it now, not while the prince remained.
Orophin had left the pair and searched the grounds for Elladan. It was no secret that the twin desired the prince’s attentions equally, but knowing that his brother had found love, a love so strong he defied his Lord and risked losing his entire life… He had to do something and he had just the idea.
Two birds, one stone.
