Chapter 23--Time to Cool Off
Glorfindel stared after Erestor, one hand clamped over his bleeding nose. He couldn't believe his bad fortune. After refusing to speak to him for two days Erestor had came to find him and he had to hear this. He groaned to himself, knowing he had lost all the gains he'd made. He wanted to go after Erestor, but decided not too yet. Glorfindel knew it was best to let the advisor have time to cool off a little. He sighed and headed for the healing house to have his nose tended.
Erestor slammed the door to the library and sat down at his desk, taking deep breaths to calm him. Fool, you should have known it was all a game to him. He only wanted you to allow him to bed you. Thank the valor I did not give in, he thought. He had wanted to, he finally had to admit it to himself. He had wanted Glorfindel, but now it hurt horribly to know he had been just a bet to Glorfindel and his men. Taking a deep breath, he started on his morning paperwork, hoping it would distract him.
Hours later Erestor stretched and glanced out the window, startled to see it was dark. He had worked straight through the day. He glanced at the stack of finished work and smiled. At least everything was done. He put everything away and headed for his chamber, hoping he wouldn't run into Glorfindel. He made it to his room without out incident. Suddenly exhausted, he undressed and slid into bed after donning a pair of sleeping pants. Soon he was lost in reverie.
Someone knocking on the door awaked him. Yawning, he rose and went to open it. If it is that cursed Glorfindel, I swear I will punch him again, he thought. He opened the door to see one of the twins. "Elrohir! What are you doing out of bed? It is to late for you to be up, pen-neth," he said.
Elrohir nodded, clutching a battered stuffed bear to his chest. "I am sorry, uncle 'Tor, but I had a bad dream and I am scared to go back to sleep. Can I stay with you, please?" he begged.
Erestor sighed, but he couldn't bring himself to refuse. "All right, come on, but you have to behave," he said.
"I will, thank you, uncle 'Tor," Elrohir said. He came in and clambered up on the bed. He laid down and yawned. "Can I have a story?" he asked hopefully.
Erestor closed the door and went to the bed. "It is well past time for an Elfling to be asleep, but I suppose so," he said. He fetched Elrohir's favorite book and settled down on the bed.
Elrohir snuggled up to him as Erestor began to read. Ten minutes after he started Erestor looked down and Elrohir was asleep. He arranging himself comfortable and joined the youngest twin in reverie.
Early the next morning Erestor awoke and glanced at Elrohir. He was still fast asleep. "Time for you to go back to your own bed, little one," he said. He put on a robe and carefully lifted Elrohir into his arms, making sure to take the bear too. He carried him back to the room he shared with his twin and laid him in bed. He pulled the blankets over him. "Sweet dreams, little one," he whispered then turned as he sensed another presence. "Good morning, Lord Elrond."
"Good morning, Erestor, he came to your room again?" Elrond asked in a concerned voice.
"Yes, he said he had a bad dream," Erestor said.
"The nightmares are getting more frequent. It worries me," Elrond said. He led the way out of the room and closed the door. "I will see you at breakfast," he said.
"Of course," Erestor said and headed back towards his room. When he got to his room Glorfindel was standing there. "What do you want, seneschal?" Erestor asked coldly.
"We need to talk, lirimaer," Glorfindel said.
"We have nothing to say to each other," Erestor said coldly, "and do not call me that. Now if you will excuse me I have to get ready to go to breakfast." He reached for the door handle and Glorfindel grabbed his wrist. "Let go, do not force me to become physical with you, seneschal."
"That is your choice, now come on," Glorfindel said. He headed for his chamber, dragging Erestor with him and ignoring the advisor's protests. Reaching his chamber, he pulled Erestor inside and closed the door behind them then locked it. That done he finally released him. "Now we will not be interrupted while we talk," Glorfindel said.
"Talk then if you must," Erestor said.
"I did not start the wager on my success at seducing you, my men did. I was speaking out of frustration when you heard us. I would never be so cruel to you, my dark one," Glorfindel said. "You know I would not lie to you, but I will make sure of it. I swear in the name of the valor I am not lying, may they take me back to Mandos's halls if I am," Glorfindel said.
Erestor knew all to well that no Elf would ever dare swear such an oath if they were truly lying. He nodded his acceptance.
"So what did you come to tell me that day, 'Tor? I would really like to know," Glorfindel said.
Erestor hesitated. That day he had wanted to admit the truth, but now he wasn't so sure he was ready. "I wanted to …" he began then shook his head. "It does not matter."
"May I court you formally, lirimaer. I would like to win your heart and would treasure it always, treasure you always," Glorfindel said.
"Yes," Erestor said, shocking himself, but shocking Glorfindel even more.
Soon though Glorfindel recovered and smiled at Erestor. "Then let the hunt begin," he growled.
