@Elladansgirl: I’m glad you’ve enjoyed the story so far. As for Saelbeth… Time will tell ;)
@Neptunesdemon: And there you have it!
General author’s note: I would have continued this sooner. I had most of it finished and ready to go up when my computer crashed L boo! It took me a while to rediscover a new angle to write, since going in the footsteps of the original story just had me frustrated because I felt it wasn’t as good.
Also, because I used IE I couldn't upload anything. I actually downloaded a different internet browser just so I could.
So here it is!
Chapter 26: The Faith I lack
Two weeks had passed and Haldir found himself half surprised that Lord Celeborn hadn’t reconsidered their agreement.
He hadn’t told Legolas and the prince hadn’t asked. It seemed better that way.
Legolas wanted honesty, but how much happier would he be to know of the deal that was made?
The two of them had found their place of light, why disturb it with memories of a darkness that had passed?
No, he couldn’t ruin their mutual happiness, yet it hadn’t entirely stopped his own suspicions and fears. Haldir felt that threat every day. What if the Lord changed his mind?
It was a gentle kiss to his jaw that pulled him from troubled thoughts as Legolas spoke softly to him, “Despite everything that has happened to the both of us, our paths lead us here. Lead us to a point of peace, a sense of belonging that I never thought possible.”
Those words were all he needed to hear to remove any doubt he might feel as his fingers drew his prince closer to softly claim those rosy lips in a gentle kiss, “I love you, my prince”
Legolas’ lips curved up into a smile, “I love you too Haldir”
Even if the Marchwarden seemed to prefer calling him prince over Legolas.
Now that Elladan had admitted his desire and lust for Orophin the two had spent but ample moments apart from each other. Regardless of that desire Orophin teased Elladan relentlessly. It wasn’t just lust he was after. There was something more, something bigger.
Elladan failed to see or understand it, much to Orophin’s amusement. It wasn’t that he didn’t want the Half-Elf, no, it was that he wanted this Half-Elf to be with him forever.
Elladan had the choice and Orophin wanted him to choose him. Forever.
He could tell Elladan was growing restless, growing uncertain and doubtful despite his at times clearly evident advances.
Orophin just had to be sure this was more than lust alone.
It was how they had ended up in the great hall for breakfast, with Orophin –as usual– picking out Elladan’s food first, before his own.
He fed him too, despite Elladan’s mumbled whispers and heavy blush.
It was their way. He would fully woo this Half-Elf and he liked to think he did a great job at that.
His brother and the prince soon joined them and of course the former couldn’t help but make it worse, “What do you think my prince, shall I feed you like this, too?”
Legolas lightly nudged Haldir with a frown, “Why don’t you go and get us something to eat?”
Haldir grinned, but nodded.
As he left, Legolas looked at the pair, particularly at Elladan who seemed to have grown a brighter shade of red, “Apologies, he meant no harm with the remark. Truly I think it’s rather sweet.”
That didn’t help. Orophin was about to comment on that remark when Saelbeth came stumbling in.
The Elf looked as if he was in great pain, barely able to walk and near out of breath.
Before any of the three could ask him however, Lord Celeborn strode past him, barely sparing the Elf a glance.
It was Haldir who moved to the Elf, “Saelbeth, what ails you? You seem to be in great pain”
The Marchwarden’s eyes had shifted to the Lord, almost accusingly, but Saelbeth interjected, “’Tis not pain, Haldir, it is only the light ache that comes from… excessive use of certain muscles. That is all.”
There was something that suggested Haldir wanted to question the statement, but he didn’t get the chance as Lord Celeborn interjected, a pointed look aimed at Saelbeth, “Are you coming?”
Saelbeth’s lips curved into a light smile, “Not at the moment.”
Haldir feared the worst at that moment, but surprisingly the Lord’s laughter filled the room, “Well then… whenever you are ready, Voronwer”
A light blush touched Saelbeth’s cheeks at the nickname. Loyal one. Just the same he bowed his head, “I shall find you, my Lord. Always.”
With that Lord Celeborn left the Hall, leaving Haldir to look beyond stunned, “What is going on?”
It was only then that Saelbeth seemed to recover a sense of seriousness as he looked at Haldir, his voice softening, “You did not think your deal was the whole of it, did you Haldir?”
There was a dooming sense of understanding in Haldir’s eyes, “But…”
Saelbeth shrugged, “But nothing. He doesn’t hurt me and I find that I quite enjoy his company and his… leadership. It was but a small price to pay for me, to ensure a far greater price for you. That deal you struck, it wouldn’t have been enough if that had been all of it. He wouldn’t have left you go.”
“What deal?”
The question startled both the Elves and as Saelbeth excused himself, Haldir turned to Legolas with a pained expression, “Legolas… It was nothing”
Those words alone… They brought back memories “How can I trust you if you keep being dishonest?”
He saw that look of hurt, “What did you keep from me now?”
The words cut him like a knife, he felt the actual pain of them in his chest, “Legolas, it isn’t like that.”
But the prince wouldn’t hear it, rushing out of the halls with Haldir in pursuit, “Legolas! Please! Listen to me”
The words froze the prince in place before he turned around, “Why should I listen now? Suddenly I am good enough for you to tell me the truth, hm?”
Haldir frowned, “You’re being unreasonable.”
And with that the prince marched on, unforgiving.
Haldir followed, stubbornly, “What was I supposed to do, hm? Tell you how I had to degrade myself in order to ensure our happiness? Tell you what he made me do? Would you like to know what he did to me, Legolas? Would you like for me to tell you the details?”
Legolas stopped, turning to look at him, “You should have told me, I would have gone with you, I would have supported you. You shouldn’t have had to do what he made you do.”
Haldir looked at him, shaking his head, “I couldn’t. I wanted to, but I couldn’t. I want you to have nothing to do with this darkness. It was done, over. I didn’t want you to know because I am ashamed of it.”
A frustrated sigh left the prince, “I will always support you Haldir, in everything you do, I would never make you feel less for such a thing… but I cannot support you or comfort you if you do not let me in.”
Haldir –too– sighed. Of course Legolas was right, but speaking of it seemed impossible. He couldn’t.
Another, quieter sigh escaped the Marchwarden, “It is difficult for me, Legolas, to speak of it. You must understand that.”
Legolas briefly cast his eyes up to the sky before he looked back at Haldir, “I do… I just wished you had more faith in me.”
Another dagger in his heart, “Legolas… It is not faith in you I lack… it’s faith in myself”
TBC…
