Chapter 28--Private Evening
An hour before dusk Erestor signed the last document on his desk with a flourish. Sighing, he carefully cleaned the quills then capped the ink. Leaving his office, he locked the door and went to his chamber to change. An hour later he was standing in front of Glorfindel's door. He reached up to knock and hesitated, suddenly feeling the urge to forget about the whole thing and return to his chamber. Stop acting like an Elfling with a crush, fool. It is just dinner, not an orgy, he scolded himself. He knocked on the door before he could lose his nerve again. The door swung open to reveal Glorfindel. "Good evening, raven," he said.
Erestor couldn't seem to think for a instant. He was to busy admiring the Elda's appearance. Glorfindel wore cream leggings with a silk shirt of sapphire blue. "Beautiful, " he said softly.
Glorfindel winked roguishly. "Thank you," he said.
Erestor blushed. He hadn't meant to say that out loud.
Glorfindel took Erestor by the hand and pulled him inside, closing the door. "You look beautiful as well. He studied Erestor's burgundy silk shirt and black leggings. "That color suits you well. You did not wear your robe either," he said, obviously pleased.
"Contrary to what everyone believes I do not always wear them nor are they permanently attached," Erestor said tartly.
Glorfindel laughed and gestured to a comfortable looking couch. "Sit down, I will pour us some wine," he said.
Erestor sat, glancing around the chamber like he had never seen them before. Actually in a way he hadn't, the last time he had been in here he had been to agitated to pay much attention. The room was furnished in shades of blue, gold and white. The colors were soothing and not overdone. The large windows and balcony doors were closed now, but in the day when they were open it would maker the chamber bright and airy. Erestor had to admit he liked it.
A large fire in the fireplace and carefully placed candles gave the room a romantic air. The table was already set and food and wine waited for them.
Glorfindel returned and handed him a goblet before sitting down beside him. “I hope the meal will suit you. I asked for both our favorites,” he said. He studied Erestor for a long minute. “You look good with your hair falling loose. You usually keep it tied back or braided.”
“It is more convenient, you wear yours much the same when on duty,” Erestor said.
“But it is not like that now. Does it look good on me?” Glorfindel asked.
Erestor glanced briefly at Glorfindel then looked back at his cup. “You know it does,” he said. “You somehow manage to look good at any time and there is few Elves in this valley that do not stare at you.” He took a long drink from his goblet. It was brandy, the best that Elrond had in the wine cellars. He looked at Glorfindel.
Glorfindel grinned mischievously and took a drink from his own goblet.
“Does Elrond know you stole a bottle of his best brandy?” Erestor asked with a raised eyebrow.
“Steal?” Glorfindel gasped, putting his hand over his heart in exaggerated hurt. “I never steal, I liberated it. That is all,” he said. He grinned wickedly. “You spend to much time with Elrond. You have picked up his raised eyebrow trick.”
“That is not a very respectful way to speak of our Lord,” Erestor chided, “and Elrond will have your head when he learns of your liberation.” He drank from the goblet again.
Glorfindel smiled to himself. He could see Erestor was trying to cover his nervousness at being alone in such intimate surroundings with him. “Shall we move to the table?” he asked. “I am starving,” he added suggestively. He stood and offered his hand to Erestor.
Fighting back a blush, Erestor took the offered hand and let Glorfindel pull him to his feet. He blushed when he was led to the table with Glorfindel still holding his hand. He was forced to let go when they sat down.
They were quite as they ate which gave Erestor time to compose himself.
Glorfindel was content to enjoy the way the candlelight played over Erestor’s dark mane. He found himself thinking of their encounter in the garden. Perhaps they could pick up where they had left off. No one would interrupt them here.
Meanwhile
Elrond gave Celebrian a concerned look as she sat doing needlework on the couch. She had been silent all day and had barely paid any attention to the twins or Arwen at lunch. “My love, are you feeling well?” he asked.
“I do not like this business between your guardian and Glorfindel. It is not proper and is affecting their behavior,” Celebrian said. “I caught them about to couple in our garden and that is not acceptable.”
“We have had many trysts in that garden ourselves as have many others. Why does it matter if they do? I think they would be good for each other,” Elrond said.
Celebrian frowned and tossed her needlepoint to the couch. “You always side with Erestor over me, sometimes I wonder why I bother to speak to you,” she said. She stood and left, slamming their bedroom door.
Elrond sighed and massaged his temple, feeling another headache coming on. He and Celebrian had argued more then usual as late and he didn’t understand why. He stood and left the room, perhaps a walk in the gardens would help stave off the headache.
Sorry about the slow pace, I am really having to much fun here, maybe I’ll need a sequel. I’m afraid this is getting a bit long. Feedback is more then welcome!
