= Here's a new one...just a little Legolas and Mel scene for the moment. The next one will be longer and have some more Elfling cuteness...enjoy, and please remember to review... = Chapter 28 Birthright “...Ada, can I get my ears pierced?” the Elfling asked. “Certainly not!” “Katya’s nana let her have her ears pierced for her birthday.” “Katya’s nana can decide what she lets her daughter do with her ears. “Elves do not pierce their ears,” he added firmly, more than a little scandalized at the very suggestion. “But I’m not just an Elf...” Mel insisted with a child’s logic and persistence. “You are right little one, you are not just an Elf,” her father said enigmatically fingers lightly caressing the page in front of him. He had acquired the books from a traveling merchant several years ago for a pittance; of course the Man really had no idea what the books were or even how he had come by them...and did not know how much they would mean to the slave... They were only a few volumes of a very old collection of Elvish History, mostly about the Second Age, some poems and stories included in their pages... He had spent many pleasant nights in the seclusion of his rooms when the King did not call for him, once more reading, for the first time in so many years, often until almost dawn stories he had known from Elflinghood. And the volumes later became extremely useful as schoolbooks when he decided it was time for Mel to learn her Tengwar, as well as some basic Elvish History... Their afternoons reading together were one of the very few things he had come to look forward to... “But it is not Harawaith blood that makes you different...but the blood of the many great and noble Elves who came before you..." “Ada...?” He looked back at the Elfling who was looking at him curiously and smiled, wondering in passing what Thranduil would think of his little granddaughter if ever they got the chance to meet... He smoothed back her dark hair, tucking a loose strand behind her ear, “You are so much more than you know yet. But it isn’t because of half-Haradrim blood...but the blood of many great Elves who came before us... “All the way back to the Great Journey when our ancestors decided to remain in Middle Earth and settle the Greenwood...” He turned the page again to a picture of the War of the Last Alliance, “This was the battle of Dargolad,” he said showing the Elfling, “many of our kin fought there...” He turned to a few other pages, showing the child other pictures of Elven warriors and stopped when he came to a very old portrait of King Oropher and Queen Gailrin... “Who’s that, Ada?” “That’s Oropher, Mirkwood’s greatest king...and Queen Gailrin...” The child looked from the solemn, fair-haired monarchs in the book, who she didn’t know were her great-grandparents, and back to her father, her brow furrowed slightly and she giggled in her childish way, “He looks like you...” “Maybe a little...” he smiled sadly, seeing his own father in the image that gazed back at him from the book; all of Oropher’s children and grandchildren had inherited the same blue eyes, the same brow and shape of the mouth as the old King’s. Though of all the Royal cousins only Legolas got the fair hair, all three of Princess Mereniel’s children were dark-haired like their father... He closed the book and looked back at the child earnestly... “Do you understand what I’m trying to say, Mel?” The Elfling frowned again, trying to see her father’s point and shook her head. He kissed her dark hair, as he stood up, “...someday, Ield Nin...” he smiled. “There’s nothing wrong with being Haradrim,” he said. “...but you have a very great heritage of your own...and you should be proud of that. And not do something because Katya does it... “Now,” he said, “it’s late. Put your books away; we’ll keep reading tomorrow...” “Yes, Ada...” Quickly gathering the parchments they had been using to practice Mel’s writing, he tore them up and put the pieces one at a time in the fire, as he did after every Tengwar lesson, scattering the ashes so there would be no evidence of slaves writing in a language other than that of the Harawaith...
