Another man was passing by and for a glimpse it strangely seems
As if they were known to one another in spite of being contradictive

"So, where shall I start?" Legolas thought about it for a minute. When he closed his eyes everything seemed so clear and vivid. For a moment, it almost seemed that if he reached out with his hand to his imagination that Haldir would be right there - with him again. It was painful, though. To relive all the moments he had shared with his soulbond. But he didn't know how to put all his memories of his beloved into words.
"How did you meet? When?" Aragorn gently urged. "I have so many questions about the two of you..."
"Then I shall start with the year when I came of age. The year I first met Haldir of Lórien. The year everything changed. Even my father. Almost 3000 years ago..."

The time an Elf comes of age is usually a happy occasion. For Elves rather celebrate the year the Elf in question was begotten, the year an Elf comes of age is a year full of celebration and joy. The celebrations usually took place all over the year because one could never say when exactly the Elf had been begotten. It was also the last year that the young one could enjoy the carefreeness of the youth, for he then entered a world full of duties, devotions and commitments.
Especially Legolas, Prince of Greenwood the Great, had to experience that with age came duties. His father, King Thranduil, had made sure Legolas knew all about his duties, his privileges, the protocol, the court etiquette. And he was very determined that nobody and nothing would destroy his picture of the perfect son.

Legolas stood beside his father in the throne room, awaiting the wave of well-wishes and congratulations for this day. His father barely said a word as he expected his son to learn the fine art of diplomacy. It bored Legolas to no end. He wanted to get over with this appointment as fast as possible since a young Elven maid awaited him in his chambers. He even didn't pay much attention to the visitors, letting his thoughts wander to Linaewen's curves. He was quite caught off his guard when the seneschal announced thet vit visitor of the day. "Haldir of Lórien, March Warden of the Golden Wood, Captain and emissary of the Galadhrim, personal ambassador of Galadriel, Lady of Light and Lord Celeborn of Doriath."
Legolas was actually torn away from his thoughts by a statement his father was muttering merely to himself. "As if that title meant anything within these halls."
Legolas looked up and froze. He had never seen an Elf like this before. Every movement spoke of strength and pride. He crossed the room with that kind of feline grace that made Legolas hold his breath. Haldir of Lórien was tall, even for an Elf. His broad chest was clad in silver. His black breeches showed off his lond snd slender legs. Long silver hair flew around his shoulders and back like a veil of woven moonlight. Dark-blue pools of liquid glass were complimented by the marble and flawless skin of his features. The sensual lips were curved into a genuine smile as he approached and bowed in front of Legolas.
"The Lady of Lórien and her husband send their regards and well-wishes to you Prince Legolas of Greenwood the Great," a thick velvety voice said clear as a silver trumpet. Legolas noticed that the hall had gone silent. Not only because they all waited for the Prince to bow and thank the emissary of the Galadhrim. They all marveled at the Elf who seemed oblivious to all the attention he was getting.
To everyone's surprise, Legolas stepped forward and greeted Haldir as an equal, offering him his arms.
If Haldir was surprised by the gesture, he hid it very well. He took the arms of the Prince without questioning. A murmur passed through the lines of servants and high guests, and Legolas felt the piercing eyes of his father in his back. He surely would be scolded for that later. For the moment, he didn't care.
"Welcome, Haldir of Lórien. I thank you for the kind words you bring from the realm of the Lady of the Wood. I hope, your stay will be a pleasant one."
He squeezed Haldir's forearms lightly - barely noticeable for anyone that watched. But Haldir smiled again returning the gesture.
He let go of the Prince, bowed to the King and left the hall with equal grace as he had shown when he had entered the throne room a few minutes ago.
Legolas instantly felt cold. He couldn't tell why. Only that he felt diminished and lost without the presence of the March Warden.
Once the throne room was empty for all the guests had returned to their quarters and homes Thranduil glared at his son. "What did you think you were doing? Are you out of your mind? You have offended half a dozen high families. Not to speak of the humiliation you brought to me! How could you do that? I'm very disappointed in you, child."
Legolas met the gaze of his father openly which was no easy thing to do; Thranduil's eyes burned with anger. "I used my eyes and my instincts, father. That Elf is special. I can feel it. His fate is mingled with mine. I know that. I felt it when I touched him and met those eyes."
Thranduil snorted. Legolas knew exactly what his father was thinking of Haldir. To his father, all Elves that were not born of royal blood were second class beings. And it was obvious to him that Thranduil did not like what he had said about Haldir. "Whatever you call it, child. It was highly inappropriate and I will make sure that it won't happen again."
His father turned away from him. He apparently thought the debate to be over. But Legolas made no effort to leave. He flinched slightly when his father locked his gaze again with his. "Have you anything left to say?"
Legolas straightened his back and tried to look as determined as he thought he was. "I would like to make a personal request, my King."
Legolas was aware of the pleased smile that graced Thranduil's features for a second. Yes, Legolas knew how to behave appropriately. "And what would that be?"
"I request Haldir of Lórien, March Warden of the Golden Wood, Captain and emissary of the Galadhrim as my personal tutor and mentor."
Thranduil turned white. Legolas almost regretted his request. But he withstood the probing gaze of his father's burning eyes. "You don't know what you are saying, Legolas. And your request is hereby denied. Go to your chambers until I send for you."
"But father..."
"This debate is over!" Thranduil roared. "Do as I say, or I shall forget that you are my own flesh and blood! I am tired of these tantrums of yours!"
Legolas gritted his teeth. He knew it was useless to take this any further. "As you wish, my King."
With as much decency he could afford Legolas left the hall to get into his chambers. On his way, he only thought of a way to make Linaewen. He only wanted to be alone now.
But fate blessed Legolas with the absence of the Elven maid. He walked out onto the balcony and breathed in the fumes and scents that flattered his nose. Though his father's palace was built like the great underground city of Menegroth, Legolas always had the feeling of gazing into the open nature when he took a look at the city. Perhaps he felt like this because the forest grew into the streets and pillars. He loved the cave-palace of his father. Seldom, he felt the desire to walk into the open lands or woods surrounding and growing over the city.
He leaned onto the balustrade and let his gaze wander over the peaceful scene that opened up before him. Servants busied themselves with all kinds of work; he spotted his youngest brother Lindor standing across the square by a well; birds were singing their beautiful song; everything seemed to be in perfect order. Until he caught a movement in the corner of his eye. Only to find Haldir and two other Elves chatting happily with each other. The two unfamiliar Elves looked very much like Haldir, though they lacked his grace and pride; Legolas assumed them to be Haldir's brothers.
Legolas allowed himself to linger for a moment, drinking in the sight of the beautiful Elf. Haldir seemed to be content and happy. Legolas noticed the differences in the Galadhrim's braids to his own. Unlike the Elves of Mirkwood, Haldir kept the front strands of his silver hair unbraided, allowing them to grace his collarbones. It felt strange to Legolas to think a male Elf beautiful. Nevertheless, Haldir was beautiful. He watched the Elven warrior doing all-day things for a while, listening to the teasing of the brothers in kind banter. He seemed so very much alive, so carefree, so different. A sudden wave of envy hit the Prince, and he realised then that he had made his request for this very reason. He envied Haldir. He wanted to know this carefreeness. This difference.
He flinched slightly when his father's seneschal appeared at Haldir's side, telling him that he had been summoned to the King. Legolas released a breath he didn't know he was holding. It didn't go unnoticed because Haldir looked up to seek the eaves-dropper. But he smiled his genuine and sensuous smile he had given Legolas only a few moments ago when he found the young Prince staring at him. He inclined his head in a light bow, never dropping his sapphire-blue gaze before he followed the seneschal to meet King Thranduil.
Legolas clenched his hands to fists at his side. He knew exactly what his father had summoned Haldir for. Most likely he would have to leave the court. And all because of Legolas' stupidity! Angrily he started to pace his chambers. He didn't like these thoughts of him. Especially the thoughts he was having about Haldir leaving. He might never see the proud March Warden again, and that was nothing he wanted to happen.
His brooding and pacing was interrupted by a careful knock on his door. "Come!"
Legolas froze as he watched Haldir enter his chambers. He expected to find anger and frustration in his eyes and was taken aback by the commitment and affection he found instead.
Haldir tilted his head in that graceful manner he had shown the Prince before, smiling. "Prince Legolas, your father has informed me you have requested me as a tutor and mentor to you. Before I can decide on that I have to know why you have requested me when you could have chosen someone from your own realm."
Legolas gulped. He had reckoned with everything but that! "Well..." He tried to compose himself. "I have to admit I acted on pure intuition and instinct. It seemed right to me." He smiled shyly at Haldir. "And when I think of it... I dare say I've made the right choice."
Haldir seemed to ponder the answer seriously befor he nodded. "Very well. It would be my pleasure to teach you everything I know. But I have to request permission of my Lady before I can step into your service, my Prince."
"Please, Legolas is sufficient enough when we are in private."
"Legolas." The smile that had never left his lips grew wider. "Your father is not very happy about your choice, you know?"
Legolas sighed. "Yes, I know. Title and blood means everything to him. He does judge people neither by character nor appearance but by on which side of the bed they were born. But gladly I am not like him. Otherwise I would have happily accepted the decisions he had been making for me."
Haldir's chuckle filled the room with joy. "I have a pretty good idea of those decisions. And I am definitely not one of those choices. He would have rather chosen someone from his realm to teach and educate you."
Legolas relaxed. He felt very comfortable around this charming Elf. And now that he knew that Haldir wouldn't have to leave for good, he could breathe freely again. "Come, have a seat, March Warden. Make yourself at home," he added quietly for the meaning was not wasted on Haldir.
"I will, Legolas. I will. But please... if I am to be your tutor and mentor... just call me Haldir, all right?"
Legolas blushed for a reason he couldn't name at this very point. But he nodded. "Haldir, then. When will you leave for Lórien again?"
"I won't. I am to await the arrival of my Lady and Lord here. To prepare everything and get things in order." He helped himself to a goblet of wine and handed Legolas another one. "So, what am I to teach you?"
"Everything!" Legolas blurted out and turned pink.
"Everything?" Haldir was amused. "And what would that everything be?"
"That is yours to decide. If I knew what that everything was - what would be left for you to teach me?"
"Wisely spoken, young one", Haldir said affectionately. "I think we will be more then student and tutor." He traced the fine line off Legolas' jaw. "At least, I hope we will be friends."
