“Well, what did he say?” She asked. “I hope you didn’t mess things up with your big mouth again.” Her tone changed suddenly, but upon seeing the masses of jealous females return to being bright.
“He asked if my feet hurt.” She said, dreamily.
Completely unfazed by the question, Tulo continued. “And what did you say?”
“I asked if he could tell by the way I was dancing, but he said he couldn’t.”
“Well, thas vas very good of him to say so. I could tell that you were not on your best form, and certainly not one of the best dancers in the room, but I suppose he was being kind.” There was a pause where Cara glared at her guardian. “What else?” She asked.
“Oh, I don’t know.” She angered, rubbing her eyes. When she opened them she saw Tulo glaring angrily up at her.
“Don’t be so-” but she stopped as another mother moved towards them to talk. “My, isn’t Jane looking beautiful tonight!” She said.
“Thank you,” replied the other mother, “but it seems that the prince only has eyes for your Cara.”
“Not at all, not at all.” Replied Tulo, “You watch, by the end of the evening I am sure he will have danced with everyone in the room!”
Cara watched for a moment as these rude pleasantries were passed around, and more parents with their single daughters joined in the conversation. As she did so, she found herself being pushed to the back of the room, but at the opposite end to the glass doors.
She looked around wearily for someone neutral to talk to, but everyone seemed busy talking about her or Legolas. As she looked around, she noticed that he had disappeared somewhere, and his parents remained talking to the rest of the guests. Lucky Prince, she thought to herself, and sighed, realising that she was going nowhere.
“Hello again.” Came a deep voice from behind her. She turned to see Legolas stood there.
“Legolas.” She nodded.
“Cara.” He said, smiling as he nodded back. “I have come to tell you that I have informed your driver among other staff that you shall be staying the night. Your guardian shall lodge in the West Wing, that way she will have the best view of the gardens. My parents also lodge in that part of the house.”
“I thank you.” She said, smiling. “But where am I to stay?” A smile broke out across his face.
“In the East Wing.” He said, still smiling. “It has the best view of the sunrise each morning, and is also where I lodge, in case you should need something in the night.” He waited for her reaction, but she continued as if nothing had been said. “I hope this is to your liking.”
Having provoked a response he revelled in his answer. “Once more, I thank you, yes. Though I would not want to trespass on your family’s kindness.”
“It is no trespass.” He replied. “It is an honour.”
Cara paused before speaking again, all remnants of her earlier smile had faded from her face. “But perhaps it would be better for my Aunt, Tulo, to lodge in the East Wing, seeing as it is her who prefers sunrises, and myself who prefers the view of the gardens.”
Legolas watched her for a moment before replying. “As you wish.” He said, before pausing for a moment to look around the room. Still not looking at her he continued to speak. “I hope you do not think me too forward if I ask you to dance again. I understand that you may be tired, but as you are by far the most interesting being in the room, aside from my mother, of course,” he included, sarcastically with a smile, “who would give you a run for your money, I would love to stand up with you again.” Cara smiled and looked at him as he turned to face her.
“I thank you for your kind offer, Legolas,” she saolitolitely, “but I feel that were you to dance your first two dances with me, and me alone, it would cause quite a stir, and much talk would arise from it.” Legolas watched her.
“You do not strike me as the sort of person who would give care to such chatter.” He said.
“Perhaps I am not.” She replied. “But still, I feel that more harm would come by it to either party, were I to dance again with you.” She waited for her response, but when she got it, she became most confused.
“Then we shall neither of us dance!” He replied, smiling. “Instead we shall stand here, or rather,” he corrected, “I shall stand here and try and get you to talk to me as you did by the pool, when you didn’t know who I was.” There was a pause. “Like a normal person.” He added, slowly, watching her. She smiled back.
“You honestly want me to stand here and point out these peoples foibles?” Cara asked, exasperatedly.
There was a glint in his eye. “Why not?” He said, with a flicker of his eyebrow. “You know all there is to know, and I just know what I’m told – what society is ready to tell me.” She looked at him for a moment, before turning to trace her vision around the room.
“Very well,” she said, her eyes resting on the two brothers who stood with their sister, looking very angry indeed, “you see them, over there in the corner?” She asked. Legolas traced her vision.
“Who? Do you mean Lady Mirarthuar?” He asked in earnest.
“Very good,” she replied, “don’t look at them now, but listen.” They both rested their gazes on other areas of the room. “She is in love with Lord Marcus’ brother, who is her brothers’ best friend. If they knew they’d castrate him,” Legolas winced at the thought, “but for about three months now, she’s been feigning headaches and leaving in the evening to meet him.” Legolas raised his eyebrows.
“How do you know this?”
“I am a friend of their scullery maid.” She replied, in earnest, watching him. Seeing the expression on his face she looked away. “I shouldn’t have told you that. Forget I said anything.”
No, No, no.” He ushered. “Don’t stop!” She looked at him, and they both fell silent. It was for several moments that they remained like this, until Cara realised and looked away. Legolas smiled. “I am glad that you are staying till the morning,” he began, “it will make for some interesting conversation.” She continued to look anywhere else.
Imbrothŕid stepped forwards, towards her son. “Legolas,r,” r,” she said, completely ignoring Cara’s presence, “you must pick a partner to dance with.” Cara watched for Legolas’ reaction. He tried to smile.
“I shall at some point,” he said, turning to Cara, “but as of yet, I am tired and wish to wait until later.” Imbrothŕid was unfazed.
“Well, at least you must dance with the Lady Mirarthuar, and Lady Katerina, as your father and I have invited them to stay until the morning.”
“Mother!” Angered Legolas, trying to level his voice. Cara pretended to be ignoring the conversation.
“What?” She asked. “You have invited someone till the morning, and so it is only right that some others get the chance as well.” Legolas glared down at her. “I am not embarrassing you, Legolas, so I don’t know what is troubling you with this issue.” He continued to glare.
“You are-” he began, but she interrupted him.
“A mother can never embarrass her son, nor can he her.” She said, smiling around the room, at her own happyuatiuation. “It is just the way it is.” Legolas stared at her as the music concluded on another dance. Couples streamed away from the centre of the room, only to be replaced slowly by more.
“Well, then,” he began, “there is nothing I can do to you.” She looked at him, puzzled. He simply smiled and turned to Cara. “Are you ready to dance?” He asked.
“I’m sorry what?” She asked, blinking quickly. “I don’t understand.”
“We must dance. It is our time.” He said, offering his hand. She took it, and was led to the centre of the room.
Cara watched the looks on everyone’s faces as he did so. Jealousy festered in most, as well as anger. In fact, the only one who seemed genuinely happy was Tulo, who stood beaming across the room, and looking at everyone else’s reaction.
“But my feet!” She protested quietly, as they stood ready to dance. “You said I wouldn’t have to dance!” He looked down at her as the music started again, and they slowly began to move.
“And for that, I sincerely apologise.” He replied, looking around the room as she continued to look up at him. “Among other things.” He added, finally looking down. He saw the innocence in her eyes. “I thank you, really I do.” He said.
“You can thank all you want,” she said, a little more angrily, “you have no idea what they are going to be talking about now.” He looked apologetic at her. “Two dances!” She exclaimed. “The only two dances!” His air turned a little nervous. “For you nothing too bad will happen, but for me!” She looked around the room as they turned.
“In the morning this will all be forgotten.” He suggested. “Soon this party shall end, and I can show you to your room in the East Wing.” He looked at her for a response, but none came. There was a pause. “Does it matter terribly ifple ple talk?” He asked.
She didn’t look at him, but instead at everyone else – the spinning faces around the room. “I don’t care what they say.” She said. “It doesn’t matter to me, but it matters to them.” She paused. “Oh, words are just words.” She looked up at him, their faces very close in their embrace. He began to lean forwards and pull her in.
The whole room seemed to fall silent, watching them. Their breaths quickened for a moment, but then…
“I thought you said Tulo was going to be in the East Wing.” Cara leaned back a moment, her voice harder than before, more commanding. Legolas looked at her, hungrily.
“I…I can’t remember.” He said, watching her lips, the whole room watching them.
“You did,” she continued, “you said that.” She looked at him and waited until he looked her in the eye.
“I…um…yeah, they wont be able to do that.” He replied, taking a deep breath, watching her, the room still watching him.
“That is a shame.” She said, sceptically, watching the way he was watching her. “Tell me, what of the other two Ladies who are staying the night?”
“There is plenty of room in the West Wing.” Cara raised an eyebrow. “I shall see to it personally.” He continued.
They continued for a moment, in silence, looking at each other. But after a while, Cara looked away, and smiled. Legolas smiled slightly but he did not stop looking at her. He sensed that the dance was coming to an end; the music was slowing, the onlookers were talking quick as ever, and his parents were watching him, fuming. He held her tightly towards him, so close, in fact, that she found it difficult not to trip over her dress as she moved. He held her so firmly that he almost lifted her off the ground.
She looked up at him. Once again, their faces were almost touching. The music stopped.
Slowly he released her and she found her footing on the ground. A strand of hair befell her face. Before she could raise a hand to move it, Legolas raised his own and gently brushed it aside. She looked at him whilst he did this, until she caught his gaze. He ran his hand gently down her arm until he picked up hers, and began to lead her slowly from the centre of the room.
