The day was beautiful. Guilty to stay inside. Erestor left his study and went down to the gardens. It was spring and everything flourished. The trees burst into fresh-green leaves and flowers. The grass was still cold but pleasurably caressed his bare feet. The flowerbeds were full of colourful flowers, yellow, blue, white and red, and a light wind brought their scents through the valley. The sun was shining and the sky was bright blue, without clouds like...
Erestor's eyes widened in surprise. The halted just in time to stop himself from running into the figure that appeared all of a suden. He was looking into the grey eyes of the ruler of Imladris who smiled at him. He greeted with a nodof his head. Without hesitation Elrond caught him and linked their arms.
"Beautiful day, isn't it, Erestor? It surprised me to see you outside," Elrond said and barely noticing Erestor's reluctance as he escorted him back to the gardens.
"Do you need something important? Or you just decided to join me?" Erestor asked and hoped it would be the first alternative. It would give him a chance to work more. At the last days it seemed to him he had had less duties which could take away his thoughts from the fateful evening.
"No," Elrond smiled. "I hoped you would join me."
Erestor arched his eyebrow in question.
"We will go to see others near the river. It's a beautiful day and a short holiday won't do any harm," Elrond answered and quickly added when Erestor tried to object: "Everybody has a holiday, even you."
Erestor swallowed his objection. "Is it necessary for me to go to the river? I'd rather stay here," he halted when they were about to leave the gardens.
Elrond turned to him with a serious expresion on his face. "Enough, Erestor. Why are you trying to escape? Did Glorfindel do something so terrible to ruin your friendship? I know he tried to speak to you because he wished to clear up the situation..."
"Clear up? Do you advocate him?" the dark eyes narrowed.
"No. I came to you as a friend who can not watch this anymore. Yore fre friends, weren't you? Does Glorfindel really deserve as much as your listening to him? Will you not try at least?"
"We made a mistake, both of us. And although you all think I have no feelings his words hurt me, more than you can emagine. He always hurt me again adn again since the time he came to the valley and he never knew."
"You never mentioned anything..." Elrond was speachless.
"Well, what should I have said?" Erestor snarled at him. "Should I be the greatest fool? You know I've never begged for anything. But I was tempted to go to him and beg for his favour he gave to others. Oh, yes. Why that consternation? I loved him, since the begining, for centuries. But I have my pride. I will not beg, never!" He grimaced bitterly when he noticed the stream of thoughts and memories that mirrored in the grey eyes of Lord Elrond. "So, you have your answer I owed it you. And I hope you realize how difficult it is for me to let him speak to me..." And then when Elrond still couldn't find any words, he added: "You wished to go to the river."
The ruler of Imladris nodded slowly. All that Erestor revealed him was more than surprising. He watched the fair face. He always acknowledged his cool beauty and he remembered the days when he tried to reach behind that cold mask. But he didn't succeeded. He thought nobody could reach that heart of ice except young princ of Wooden Realm. And for all the time since the golden-haired elf appeared, Erestor's heart beat for him.
For all those centuries his dark-haired advisor suffered and nobody noticed. Elrond knew that even he wounded that heart when he laid with Glorfindel for some time.
"I'm so sorry," Elrond whispered.
"So am I," Erestor replied. "I will accompany you but don't press me to speak to him. I can't do it... not yet."
In silence Erestor followed Elrond down the forest path to the river. From far he could hear merry laugh and songs mixed with the whisper of the wind in the crowns of the trees and the bubbling of the river. And than he saw them - fair and dark elves with light hearts. They dived to the foamy waves of the river, they danced and sang on the meadow.
And then he laid his eyes on the well-known figure.
The sun warmed his body on the stone in the middle of the river which stream played with the golden tresses. Behind the closed eyelids clouded impressions of the fatal night slipped. He wished he had known his mysterious elf. It seemed so clear to him but it was not. And withal he was sure he knew those dark eyes. He still sensed their gaze...
He opened his eyes and turned his head to the riverbank where the elflings played. Most of the elves of Elrond's house wer here near the river. An afternoon picknick was a welcomed interruption of the routine. He had to be among them, his mysterious elf. He sensed his eyes on himself. Glorfindel looked around. Under the trees he saw Lord Elrond coming and to his surprise also Erestor.
He forgot his dream in the moment long-haired she-elves surrounded Elrond. Erestor sat under the chestnut tree, aside from the others. Maybe Glorfindel could try to speak to him again. He had to admit he had missed Erestor's friendship.
Erestor held his breath when Glorfindel's fair body slipped into the water and without mistake headed in his direction. He looked around. Elrond was lead away from him in cheerful conversation, Elladan tried to drown his brother. Erestor didn't want to go through another conversation with tha golden-haired elf but nobody was near to hepl him. Quickly he stood up a disappeared into the forest.
He was not ready to speak with Glorfindel. Not now, a few moment after he had told his secret to Elrond. He felt too vulnerable. He didn't manage to built his cold wall around himself as quickly after he destroyed it not so long ago. If he met the golden-haired elf everything would become clear. And he was not ready for rejection.
He followed the river upstream in the shadows of the trees. The chatter of the elves quieted until it died out. A comforting silence surrounded him when he sat on the stone at the riverbank. He raised his knees to his chest, embranced them and put his head on them. The black eyes stared at the foamy waves of the river which sang a quiet song. Chirrups of the forest's birds and whispers of the wind in the crowns of the trees entered his heart like a healing balsam.
Glorfindel watched his friend who sat without movement by the river. Long dark tresses flew in a light wind from the water. His dark robe fell around his slender body and its edge became wet everytime a bigger wave burst into the stone he sat on. Erestor was so lost in his thougthatthat he didn't notice Glorfindel approaching to him nor when he sat beside him.
Until a light touch on Erestor's shoulder brought him back to reality. He turned his face away from the water and his big dark eyes laid on the well-known face. Glorfindel held his breath in surprise. It seemed like he saw his friend's fair face for the first time. For the first time in the depths of the dark eyes he could see everything Erestor hid. He could read it now like an opened book. Nothing stayed hidden, there was a great pain and sorrow but also a deep love.
Carefully Glorfindel raised his hand and his fingertips touched Erestor's face. The dark eyes filled with tears and closed. A hot drop slipped from underneath the trembling lashes. Many centuries they spent together and Glorfindel never noticed what Erestor had felt. Never once came to his mind to seek a beating heart under the cold facade. And now he suddenly had that heart put in his hands, fearing his answer, greading rejection.
Slightly Glorfindel stroke the fair skin on the high cheekbone and then his fingers moved into the dark tresses and caressed the curve of pointed ear. The black eyes opened faltering. Of all the elves of Rivendel, Erestor was the last one Glorfindel would seek his mysterious elf in. And yet he was glad it was him and none other. He slowly bent forward and joined their lips.
"You should have told me, Erestor," Glorfindel whispered.
In wonder Erestor stared at bright blue eyes. Was it really happening? Was it possible that Glorfindel didn't turn away from him? Would be possible their feelings would be mutual some day?
At the moment Erestor smiled, the fair face lost its cool mask. And Glorfindel gasped for breath. Disbelievingly he stroked that face. How was the dark-haired elf beautiful! The black eyes lost their pungency and let Glorfindel's attention fix upon the beautiful features .
"I can tell you now," Erestor replayed quietly and raised his hand to caress the gold tresses. He pushed them behind elegant pointed ear.
Glorfindel held his breath. Erestor's quiet voice sounded so soft, so seductive. Gentle fingers caressed the curve of his ear. Before him there was totaly different Erestor. Glorfindel's heart throbbed like little bird pounding with its wings to the walls of its cage and every moment was closer to the dark-haired elf. Will Erestor say that words?
"I love you, Glorfindel," Erestor whispered.
"Erestor..." golden-haired elf took a breath and took the fair face into his hands. He wished he could say something more. But if he had had any idea, it was gone when the hot lips pressed to his. He felt pulled into the kiss that took his breath away.
"Will you not make sure you found the right elf?" Erestor whispered to his lips.
"No," answered Glorfindel and slightly brushed his lips over Erestor's. "I know that." Yes, this time he was sure.
The End.
