Legolas followed him to the darkened chambers. Erestor lit the candles on the candellabra situated on the play-table between armchairs near the fireplace. Vague yellowish flames lightened the room a bit.
"Take a seat," he told Legolas who stayed near the door.
A bit uncertainly the prince approached one of the armchairs and sat on the edge of it while he watched the dark figure taking two goblets and a caraffe with wine. He looked up at Erestor when he came closer to the play-table, filled the goblets and handed him one. But the black eyes didn't look at him until Erestor sat down too. Only then their pungent sight pierced him and Legolas doubted if it had been the right idea to seek the dark elf.
"So you may start," he challenged the prince. "You asked me to spend this night here. It's a really an unusual plea so I must ask why. And I wont accept an answer like yesterday's NOTHING. Because SOMETHING is happening anu gou got me involved although I doubt that any of us enjoys it."
Legolas averted his eyes. "I don't know where I should begin," he whispered.
"They took your key..."
"Yes. When I returned to my room after dinner and wanted to lock the door, it was simply gone. I don't know who took it, but..." Again he looked up to the carefuly wathing eyes. "I didn't know where to go, I couldn't stay there. They would return..."
"You obviously mean Elladan and Elrohir. I recognized their steps last night."
Legolas' blue eyes widened and he nodded.
"Excellent, so we have the beginning," Erestor remarked ironicaly. "You can continue. You evidently didn't wander through the house to seek me out only because your key was gone. You could have solved this matter with Lindir who takes care of the household..."
Big tears appered in prince' eyes. How could he have thought that Erestor could... "I hoped... yesterday... and this morning... you helped me. I thought you could..."
"... do it again?" the dark-haired elf finished. He leaned to the prince until the predatory flames reflected in his black eyes. The light underlined his features and reflected sharp shadows on it. Legolas nearly pulled away with his throat tight. Elrond's advisor looked suddenly too dangerous. Uncertainly he averted his eyes and took the goblet to drink. The potent wine ran through his body in the the warm wave that vanished earlier.
"Yes," he agreed quietly. "I'm afraid they would sway me to do something I don't want to do. I forgot to lock my door yesterday..."
The silent movement revealed that Erestor rested comfortably and also drank from his goblet.
"It begun before. I always liked Elladan and Elrohir like my brothers... I remember the first time they came to the Woodland Realm. We ran away and got lost in the forest. For the whole week our soldiers were looking for us. Finaly they found us in an old hollow tree where we were hiding because we weere scared fo the spiders..." he looked at Erestor who was hidden behind the burning candles. "When I came to Rivendell this time something changed. I didn't realized it at the beginning, I never thought that my best friends... Every time we ..., we wrestled in the grass, we secretly sneaked in the night... but this time their touches were more... intimate. I had to realize earlier than that day near the river." The fair features blushed and Legolas looked into the sivler goblet in his palms. "I knew that they... that they had been closer than brothers. But never came to my mind they would want me... my body."
"And you don't want them?" Erestor whispered his question.
"I do no deny that I noticed their charms but it never came to my mind to look for something more in oulatilationship... Maybe I would... If Glorfindel didn't interrupt us maybe everything would be different now... But since that day I feel like a hunted animal. I fear them, they wait for me everywhere... I tried to avoid them, but it didn't work. They are the only ones in Rivendell I ever spent my time with. But this time I rode scared with them and always I hoped that someone would ride with us. I was wont to lock my room..."
"... until yesterday. I don't know, somehow I forgot. I don't remember. I woke up only when..." the blush on his features deepened.
"When?" Erestor repeated quietly.
Legolas closed his eyes for a while. Could not Erestor imagine it? "When I was... inside me... Elladan entered with his fingers... It was so unexpected. They aroused me but inside... I felt nothing. No desire for their touches. Nothing. I knew only that I did not want them. I don't know how I escaped them... I don't want to experience it again, Erestor. I don't want it, that's why I couldn't stay there tonight. They would return, I know that."
"Why did you seek me?" Erestor's voice was still quiet, almost distant.
"Who would believe me? Elrond? Glorfindel? Yesterday I felt safe with you..."
"Really? How strange!" again the irony returned to his quiet voice.
"You gave me your word. Whatever they tell about you nobody doubts your word and I believed it... I wanted to believe. You helped me although I don't know why, but I'm gratefull to you."
"And you want me to help you again?"
"I didn't know what to do! I still don't know! I wished to ride away," Legolas cried.
"To run away?"
"Yeah, to run away," he stood up and knelt before Erestor. He took the fair hands into his palms and urgently looked up into the black eyes. "You are Elrond's chief advisor. Give me an advice now. What should I do?"
Erestor grimaced. He released one of his hands from the grasp and stroked lightly Legolas' pretty face with the back of his fingers. The dark eyes saddened. "I'm not the one who should give you advices. I'm not the right person." Prince rested his head on Erestor's knees. The soft hand stroked his golden hair. "But one thing I can tell you is: Don't run away..."
"Then should I give them what they want?" the prince closed his eyes.
"No, not that. Don't let them win."
"How?"
t Ert Erestor didn't answer him although his fingers still caressed his fair tresses. For a long while they stayed in silence until Legolas looked up into the black eyes which gazed at the cold fireplace absentmindedly. With strange far-away look they lowered to him.
"You can stay here tonight if you wish. And tomorrow I'll try to find a spare key."
"Thank you," the woodland prince smiled with relief.
"Go to bed," Erestor whispered and pushed a lock of golden hair behind one pointed ear.
"And won't you go?"
"I have some work to do... I think you will manage without me."
"Can I help you?" offered prince although he suspected Erestor would refuse. When he shook his dark head, Legolas stood up to abandoned him to his duties. "Then good night, Erestor... And thank you."
"Good night."
He stepped into the bedroom and halted for a while and listened. For a long time there was silence, then Erestor sighed and the silky fabric of his robes whispered. He heard quiet footsteps followed by rustling of turning pages and by the scrapping of the tip of a quill on the paper. Legolas entered the bathroom to wash off the all-day dust. He undid golden braids and brushed them. And then he stepped into the bedroom again. He put away the gray mass of robes on the armchair and slipped under the dark blanket on the huge bed. The cold fabric caressed his skin. He closed his eyes in that pleasant feeling. Again he felt safe. He looked through the opened window at the night sky with shining stars and he smiled happily at them.
