Outlaw
Summary: Partially inspired by Ned Kelly. “It was the
summer of 1880. Nothing was really unusual except for the weather - it was a
scorcher… I remember seeing him for
the first time, out chopping wood with his brothers – that’s when I knew I would
love him.”
Feedback: Please! I’d absolutely love it!
Disclaimer: I don’t own Orlando or Viggo or any other familiar
characters. *sniffle*
Archive: Perfect Bloom. If you want to, just ask.
Warnings: Language, M/F and M/M
Author’s Note: This is my first serious fic so it
might get a bit rough on the edges but those can always be smoothed out in the
end.
I made a few changes to some of the characters, but only
slightly physically or age-wise. Most of this will be done in Orlando’s point of view, just so there’s no
confusion. I know that Orlando
only has one older sister, but for this, I’m taking some artistic license.

Deathkiss: YAY! My first review! Thanks so much! ^-^
Line: Thanks so much! I’m hoping this is soon enough.
:P
namárië120: Thank you! Lol, I kind of turned Orlando into some blushing little girl, but
if the chemistry works for you than I’m doing something right!
Thanks to anyone who reviewed or voted (on aff.net). I’m
totally flattered and I love hearing feedback!
ENJOY!

Chapter Three – Anything You Want
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*
I woke up the next morning to a
soft pushing at my chest. Opening my eyes blearily, I grinned. “Grace, it’s too
early to be gettin’ up. Go back to sleep, lovey.” I rolled over and pretended
to fall back to sleep. I heard a faint giggle and a whined ‘Orli!’ and I rolled
back over to face the day. “Now Gracie, why are you gettin’ me up so early
today, hm?” I asked, gently pushing her away from me so I could stand. She
rolled from her kneeling position to her backside and giggled.
“It’s my birthday, Orli! Ma’s making a big supper and said
Lijah can stay over again!” I laughed a bit at her enthusiasm at the prospect
of Elijah staying over as he was over almost every night.
I had
barely pulled on a plain shirt and rolled the sleeves up when I felt Grace
hugging at my leg. “Orli. Did you get me a present?
I’m turnin’ six after all. Lijah says that it’s a big day.” She looked up at me
through her long chocolate curls and I frowned.
“Well lovey, I wasn’t sure what you’d be wantin’ exactly
so…” I saw her face fall in disappointment and I kneeled down so that we were
the same height. “I got you this. We can go out later and spend it on whatever
you fancy.” I reached into the pocket of my trousers and pulled out a small
coin. Her face lit up once more and she threw her arms around my neck, hugging
me tightly to her.
“Thank you Orli!” she whispered in my ear, playing with the
curls at the nape of my neck. She unwrapped herself and took my hand, heading
into the kitchen. “Ma! Ma, guess what Orli got me? One whole pound, ma! And him
and Lijah are goin’ to take me out to spend it, ma! Ma look!” She held the coin
up as high as she could; trying to get my mother’s attention away from the
potato she was cutting.
“Yes dear, it’s lovely. Now go get cleaned up, eat your
breakfast, and then you can go out.” My mother smiled gently down and patted
Grace’s head, kissed her nose, and sent her out back to wash her face. Once
Grace was out of sight, her look turned hard. “Really, Orlando, where did you get that? Money has
been hard enough to come by lately without you stealing something.” I frowned.
“I didn’t steal nothin’ ma! Honest! Lij got me a job a while
back with his da at the mill. I’ve been workin’ for months and savin’ what I
could.” By the look on her face, she didn’t believe me. Grace hurried back into
the house and grabbed my hand.
“Come on, Orli. Lijah’s already outside and ready to go! We
can get somethin’ to eat at Ian’s store. Bye ma!” She pulled me out of the
house and I smiled when I saw Elijah waiting for us a bit down the path. I
pulled Grace up onto my shoulders and ran over to him.
“So, did she believe you?” I heard Elijah whisper in my ear.
“No. I don’t think she ever will, even if your da went right
up to her and told her God’s honest truth… sayin’ I really was workin’ there.”
I don’t think that she ever really did believe me, but it didn’t matter.
By the
time we had arrived in town, Grace was bouncing up and down with excitement. I
let Grace down and she ran ahead of us, Elijah calling after her to be careful.
She skipped through the streets, looking into store windows to see if something
would interest her. “Gracie, your brother and me are goin’ to be sittin’ right
here, darlin’!” Elijah called after her. She smiled and nodded then hurried
further down the street. We took a seat on the low brick wall that ran around the
Hound’s Head. Elijah fell oddly silent and I was about to ask him if something
was wrong, when I felt a pair of hands covering my eyes and two other pairs
lifting me up and pulling me across the street to where the rain barrel sat in
front of the general store.
“Don’ you even think about – ” but
I was flung dropped into the barrel. Spluttering and coughing, I glared up at
the three pairs of eyes grinning back at me. “Buggers! The lot of you! Why is
it always me? Lij is smaller!” I pulled myself from the barrel and pushed
Elijah to the ground while he was laughing hysterically.
“We gotta do it to ya, Orli! You’re the youngest! It’s
easiest to pick on you!” Dominic shoved my shoulder lightly and grinned. “What
fun would ya be without us? Ya couldn’ drink ‘till last
year.” Despite myself, I laughed and shook the extra water from my hair.
“Well then, let’s just go find Gracie and see what she’s up
to.” Billy glanced over at Elijah and me.
“You brought Gracie and let her just run off?” he asked,
eyes wide.
“We always do, Bill.” I said, wondering why he was so
uptight.
“They’re crackin’ down harder than ever, Orli. The
coppers’ll take ya off with no real reason, and Gracie don’t know no better.
She’d get herself in trouble just for bein’ too sweet.” Billy’s words rang in
my ears. If Grace got hurt…
“Gracie!” I called, starting down the street she had taken,
Dominic, Billy, and Elijah following beside me.
“Orli!” I turned around a corner
and saw Grace, her arms held at her sides by one of the police men while another
was inspecting the coin I had given her. “Orli!” she cried again. “Orli, they
took my birthday present!” In that moment, when I saw tears pouring down her
cheeks, and two jeering men taunting her, something snapped.
“You bloody bastards! That’s hers, that is! You got no right
takin’ it!” I lunged at the man holding her coin but
he stepped to the side and I, not expecting it, went straight into the wall
behind him.
“You hear that Sean? We got no right takin’
what’s been stolen! The Blooms with money is as likely a thing as a cat
sounding like a dog.”
“That ain’t stolen… I worked for it, now give it here!” I
punched the man in the nose, knocking him down. I grabbed the coin and pocketed
it, but when I turned to get Grace from the man called Sean, I felt something
connect with the back of my head and everything went black.
