After spending several days and
nights in a semi-conscious haze, I finally awoke when the orc carrying me
dropped me to the ground after we had stopped to make camp. I winced slightly
as I felt the wound in my head begin to throb.
“Merry!” I heard Pippin frantically
whisper as he crawled over to me.
“I think… we may have made a
mistake leaving the Shire, Pippin…” I whispered, turning to face him. I tried
to sit up, but another wave of nausea thwarted my attempt.
“Are you well?” He asked me,
“You’re so pale…”
“I’m fine, don’t worry…” At that
moment, we heard a strange sound coming from the nearby forest.
“What’s making that noise?” Pippin
whispered to me.
“It’s the trees…”
“What?”
“Remember the old forest on the
borders of Buckland? Folks used to say there was something in the water that
made the trees grow tall… and come alive...”
“Alive?”
The moaning grew louder.
“Whisper, talk to each other…even
move…”
“I’m starvin’!” One of the Uru-kai
yelled, “We’ve eaten nothing but maggoty bread for three stinken days!”
“Yeah!” Another said, “Why can’t we
have some meat?” We froze as he turned to look at us, “What about them? They’re
fresh!”
“They are NOT for eating!” The
first shouted. I attempted a sigh of relief, but it caught in my throat as a
third Uru-kai lifted us from the ground.
“What ‘bout their legs? They don’t
need those. They look tasty!” The first Uru-kai charged forward and wounded the
one holding us, causing us to fall back to the ground.
“Looks like meat’s back on the
menu, Boys!” He yelled, referring to the one that was wounded. Chaos ensued as
the others jumped on their comrade.
“Pippin, let’s go!” I whispered.
However, before we could crawl away, one of the Uruks grabbed Pippin’s leg.
“Go on, call for help!” He sneered,
“No one’s going to save you now!” As he raised his knife to gut Pip, several
hundred men on horseback seemed to materialize out of thin air, cutting the
Uruks down left and right. As I tried to free myself I saw Pippin roll out from
under a random horse and cut himself loose. He ran over and untied me, and we
both ran toward the forest. Suddenly, an uruk grabbed hold of Pip’s belt.
“The belt!” I shouted. He took it
off quickly.
“Run!” I said as we entered the
wood, the uruk closing in behind us. We quickly climbed one of the trees and
waited.
“Did we lose him?” Pip asked,
looking around, “I think we lost him!” I smiled, but that feeling was cut short
as something pulled to the ground.
“Merry!” Pip yelled. The tree he
was holding onto seemed to twitch a bit, then opened its eyes…
Wait a minute… eyes?
The sight of that nearly caused
Pippin to fall, but the tree caught him before he hit the ground. I
wasn’t sure what to be more afraid of, the uruk about to kill me, or the living
tree that held Pippin hostage. My question was answered for me as the tree
stomped on the uruk, killing it.
“Run, Merry!” Pippin yelled. I
tried to, but the tree picked me up before I could get away.
“Little orcs!” The tree said,
glaring at us.
“It’s talking, Merry! The tree is
talking!” Pippin said.
“Tree! I am no tree! I am an Ent!”
The tree replied.
“A tree herder, a Shepard of the
forest!” I said in awe. I had heard stories of their kind as a lad.
“Don’t talk to it, Merry!” Pip said
to me, “Don’t encourage it!”
“Loathsome orcs! They come with
fire! They come with axes! Biting! Clawing!
Breaking! Hacking! Burning!”
“We’re not orcs!” I yelled, “We’re
Hobbits! Halflings! Shire folk!”
“Hmmm, perhaps you are… and perhaps
you are not. The White Wizard will know.”
“The white wizard…” Pippin
whispered.
“Saruman…” I said. We were then
unceremoniously dropped to ground at the wizard’s feet. I looked up slowly at
what I thought would be our doom, then felt my jaw drop at the vision before
me.
“Meriadoc Brandybuck, what the
devil happened to your head?” He said, reaching out to me. He whispered some
words I didn’t understand; I then felt the pain vanish. He seemed to hesitate
for a moment, then retracted his arm.
“Gandalf?” Pippin said slowly, once
we had both recovered from the shock, “But, you fell…” He nodded.
“However, I was able to return in
order to complete my task,” He replied. He then turned to the tree behind us.
“These two are Meriadoc Brandybuck
and Peregrin Took, hobbits from the shire near the western edge of Middle
Earth. I can assure you they mean you no harm. And I would like to introduce
the two of you to Treebeard. He has been a friend of mine for many years.”
“Hello,” We both said.
“Now come,” Gandalf said to us,
“You both could use some rest. Don’t worry, nothing will harm you this night.”
We walked into a small clearing by a spring.
“You may sleep here,” Gandalf said
simply. Pippin promptly yawned.
“Well, it’s about bloody time! I
haven’t had a good nights sleep since we left Lorien and I’m exhausted!” We
laughed, feeling more at ease. Pippin curled up near the bottom of one tree and
quickly fell asleep. I shook my head. Even at times like this, Pippin was still
his carefree self.
“You should sleep too,” Gandalf
said to me, “You need the rest more than he does.” I peered up at him.
“I feel fine, I assure you,” I
replied, slightly confused. He looked at me.
“Have you not felt ill of late?
Nauseous, or more easily tired?” I stared at him.
“How did you know?” I asked, “I
have not told anyone of that!”
“Do you know why you have been
ill?” I paused, sighing.
“I have thought about it, but I’m
not entirely sure… As a lad I heard stories about other hobbits in my family
but… its rare…umm…” I hesitated.
“Then you already know what is
happening to you.” He stated. I sat down, my mind in a haze. Then it’s true,
Gandalf’s magic had sensed what I had been thinking for a while. I am with
child, something not entirely unheard of in my family. I sighed.
“Please, allow me to tell the
others about my child when I am ready to,” I said. He nodded.
“All I ask is that you take extra
care, Master Merry. Now, get some rest.” I nodded slowly, curled up next to a
loudly snoring Pippin and fell into a dreamless sleep.
