King of the Golden Hall
Aragorn,
Gimli, Legolas and the Countess, now joined by Gandalf, the mission now changed
and on their way to Edoras, had stopped for the night. Gimli had found a spot on the ground to rest and
was snoring away. Aragorn had been
sitting, trying to rest but, too restless, he got up
and was talking to Gandalf.
It
had taken a long time for Legolas to calm the Countess as she was also very
restless due to her hunger. Finally, he
persuaded her to lie down, brought her a little water, then
lay down next to her. Positioning her on
her side, he snuggled next to her and, draping his arm over her, placed his
hand high on her abdomen, under her breasts.
He calmed her as he had once before and her hunger faded as she drifted
off. The temptation to take her away
disappeared almost as fast as it had come to him and Legolas just pulled her to
him tighter and waited for the night to pass.
The
next day’s riding brought them to a sweeping valley and sight of a city
on a hill, topped by a great hall.
Gandalf stopped them.
“Edoras,” he announced.
“And the golden hall of Meduseld. There dwells Theoden, King of Rohan – “ his voice dropped – “whose mind is
overthrown. Saruman’s hold over
King Theoden is now very strong. Be careful
what you say. Do not look for welcome
here.” And he urged Shadowfax on,
followed by the others.
They
passed through the gate of the city. The
courtyard and city they rode through, while populated enough, had an air of
quiet dread; the people of the city, dressed in mourning black, watched them
but no one greeted them. They rode
through the city and up the hill to the great hall.
“You’d
find more cheer in a graveyard,” said Gimli.
They
dismounted at the bottom of the stairs leading to the hall and gave the horses
to the care of grooms who came up to their assistance. They walked up the stairs and were met by a
guard who had come out of the great hall.
The
guard stood before them and said “I cannot allow you before Theoden King
so armed, Gandalf Greyhame. By order
of…” He paused and in a
mixture of disgust and shame, he continued “…Grima
Wormtongue.”
At
Gandalf’s nod, Legolas, Gimli, the Countess and Aragorn gave up their
weapons to the doorwardens. When they
were done, the guard looked apologetically at Gandalf. “Your staff,” he said, nodding at
the staff Gandalf still held.
“Hmmm?
Oh,” said Gandalf.
“You would not part an old man from his walking stick?”
“By
order of Grima…” the guard began.
“Look
at me,” the Countess said, drawing his attention. The guard’s face went blank. “Escort us in. We’re wasting your time,” she
told him.
The
guard nodded, then turned and led them into the hallway. Gandalf, closely surrounded by the others,
walked down the long and wide hall that was filled with shadows and half
light. Legolas walked on one side of
Gandalf, holding his arm and the Countess walked on his other side; Gandalf
held his staff hidden behind the Countess’s back. The doors were closed behind them with a
finality they couldn’t help but hear.
She could see the old king seated on the throne, a man in black at his
side, speaking into his ear.
“The
courtesy of your hall is somewhat lessened of late, Theoden King,”
Gandalf called to the King as they walked toward the throne.
The
old King, in a querulous voice, answered him.
“Why should I welcome you, Gandalf Stormcrow?” and then
turning to the man in black as if seeking affirmation.
“A
just question, my liege,” said the man in black unctuously. Rising from his seat next to the King, he
continued, his tone changing to one of menace.
“Late is the hour in which this conjuror chooses to appear.”
The
Countess looked over to the side of the hall.
Men dressed in black, threatening in manner, different from the others
in the hallway, were keeping pace with them with very unfriendly expressions.
“Lathspell,
I name him,” Wormtongue sneered, coming up to them. “Ill news is an ill guest.”
“Be
silent!” commanded Gandalf.
“Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I have not passed through fire and death to
bandy crooked words with a witless worm.”
And with that, he brought his staff from behind the Countess to brandish
in Wormtongue’s face.
“His staff!”
Grima backed away, clearly nonplussed.
“I told you to take the wizard’s staff...”
Grima’s
men rushed through the people standing in the hall, attacking the
newcomers. They may have meant to try to
take Gandalf’s staff but Gandalf’s companions kept them away from
him as he continued walking toward Theoden, his staff raised.
Aragorn
struck one of Grima’s men into the Countess’s grasp; she pushed him
against a column, looked into his eyes and said “Stay very
still.” Then she just watched and
waited as the others fought Grima’s men.
“Theoden!”
called Gandalf, “Son of Thengel, too long have you sat in the
shadows.”
The
men in black were downed in short order and even Grima was down on the floor
and had Gimli’s boot in his chest.
“I would stay still if I were you,” Gimli told Grima.
“Harken
to me,” said Gandalf sharply to the King.
Seeing
that everyone’s attention was now on Gandalf and the King, the Countess
pulled the man in her grasp out of the great hallway; the hunger that she had
pushed away for so long was now rising so fast it would be hard for her to
control. Only Legolas noted their
departure.
Pulling
the man to an empty room off the great hall, she pushed him up against a wall
and bit into his neck. She fed and fed;
the thought had occurred to her before she began that it would not be wise to
kill but her hunger was overpowering and she couldn’t stop herself. The man fought her, pushing and hitting
against her but she was stronger and she took from him until she couldn’t
get any more; the man’s heart had stopped, and the blood flow was
done. She broke the man’s neck and
dragged his body back into the great hall, empty and quiet now.
Grima’s
men were beginning to stir, one waking the others; looking around them, they
saw that they were only four. They were
looking around for their missing companion when they saw the woman dressed in
black, leaning against a column, watching them.
When
she saw she had their attention, she spoke.
“In all my travels, I’ve seen that collaborators are dealt
with very harshly once their masters are overthrown.” They had no response to that, only staring up
at her sullenly. “If I were you,
I’d leave quickly.” She
brought the man’s body out from behind the column and threw it at
them. They recoiled from it in horror.
“And
take that with you,” she continued.
Paralyzed
with fear, they could only stare at the body of their friend.
Losing
her temper at their slowness, she said “Go! Before I change my mind and kill you all
myself.”
Galvanized
to movement at that, they got up and took the body of their friend and stumbled
past her out the side door and away as fast as they could go.
She
waited until they were gone, then took a deep breath and walked carefully to
the stairs leading to the throne and sat on the bottom step. She folded her arms on her knees and rested
her head. She heard Aragorn shout from
outside the hallway – “Hail Theoden King!” Trying to stay awake, she waited for Legolas.
