@Raevyn: Maybe! Or Maybe Maglor took him! Or maybe… I don't know, read and find out I say!
Chapter 30: My fault
Elladan hadn't really thought about his plan. As he dragged Maglor's body along with him, back to the surface, he had every intention to claim the murder as his own.
His station outranked Haldir's, with great enough argument he might even get away with the murder. Maybe.
That had been the plan, but the closer he got to the surface the less certain he became. Kinslaying was the biggest crime and though Maglor had deserved it, they hadn't had the authority to decide his fate.
He heard someone, Orophin, alert others to their return.
All too soon he was hauled out of the passageway, the body of Maglor a moment later.
There were gasps. People were horrified. What happened, who killed him? Where were the prince and Haldir?
Elladan looked at the crowd, meeting first of all the gaze of his father, "I killed him. There was no other way. He threatened our lives, we would have died had I not taken his life. Haldir and Legolas should return soon, too."
The words echoed through the passageway, reaching Haldir and Legolas as they made their way back, "He is taking the blame for this. We cannot let him, Legolas, he is not a murderer."
Legolas and Haldir rushed back to the surface, but as they came to it they heard the vindictive words, "Then you must face the consequences of your actions, îon-nîn."
"Wait."
Everyone paused at the command that was given, "I shall not suffer Elladan to be blamed for something he did to save my life. If you must punish someone, then you can punish me. It is my fault any of this happened."
Lord Elrond's gaze drifted to Legolas then, "If there is anyone to blame, it is me. I cannot begin to offer apology for my part in this. I saw no lie in his eyes when he told me he wished to right the wrongs."
Legolas offered a short nod, "I do not believe he was lying, I merely think he had another sort of righting in mind than you believed, Lord Elrond."
It was Orophin who spoke next, "I know I am greatly outranked here, but really, is there anyone here that truly believes anyone should be punished for the death of that disgrace of an Elf? Truly…"
A light grin came to his lips, "Did he not find death in the catacombs, known to be a place of danger and potential death to any who set foot in them? It was his own choice to venture there, does that not make it his own responsibility?"
Silence.
It was Lord Celeborn who nodded, "No one can be faulted for the path Maglor chose to walk that lead to his demise but Maglor himself. It is done. We shall see him on his way."
Though no one argued with those words, Legolas still felt the guilt, as Lord Elrond did even more.
How did he not see it coming?
The Galadhrim were the ones to take the body, led by the Lord Celeborn.
The rest of them lingered, each for their own reasons.
Haldir wrapped his arms around Legolas, pressing a light kiss to the nape of his neck, "Let us go home, poikaer."
His gaze then lifted to Elladan, "Thank you."
The Peredhel nodded, "It is alright, regardless of what happened I knew I stood a better chance of being responsible than you."
Legolas, too, bowed his head in gratitude before he took Haldir's hand, "Come home with me."
As the two elves took their leave, it left Orophin, Elrohir and Elladan.
The latter didn't miss the tension between his brother and his … Orophin.
He didn't have to wait long to find out why this was as his brother looked at him and demanded to know, "You are with him?"
Hesitation. Was he still?
Elrohir took the moment of silence to press on, "Do you love him?"
To that his brother nodded, "I do." He was sure of that much, at least.
"And he loves you?"
Orophin used the moment to move up behind Elladan, "I do."
Elladan couldn't keep the smile from his lips at the words. It was all he had wanted to hear, wanted to be sure of, "He makes me happy, Elrohir, he completes me."
Silence, followed by a nod, "I hope, for your sake, that you are right about him, Elladan."
Elladan nodded in turn, "I am certain of it."
As Elrohir left them, Elladan turned to Orophin, "I did not mean to doubt you, Orophin, I only wanted…"
Orophin cut him off to offer a type of apology of his own, "I have been a fool, Elladan. I wished only to prove that you were more than a mere conquest, but in doing so, I realize now I made you question my intentions. I will, from now on, ensure you shall never have to doubt it again."
A light grin came to his lips, "Starting now."
Before Elladan had the chance to utter a word Orophin had claimed his lips in a kiss that spoke of love and passion, "Let us find our way to my talan, hm?"
Elladan grinned, "I thought you would never ask."
Three days later…
It had been three days since Maglor had attacked him, but Haldir had repeatedly told him since that he had proven himself against the Elf. He had bested him, it only spoke in his favour that he could not kill him.
Legolas did not see it that way. Maglor was right, he had been a coward.
Haldir kissed his lips, "Legolas, stop telling yourself you are a coward. If you were a coward, the Valar only know what might have happened to you. You stood up for yourself, you had him at the point of death."
"But you were the one to take his life, where I could not."
Haldir offered a light smile, "And perhaps I have been too hasty to do so, overcome by a sense of…rage. He had dared to try and hurt you again. I could not suffer it anymore. You had greater sense and morals than I did. All I could think of was killing him, ending his miserable life so that he could no longer threaten you. I did not consider mercy. You did. I believe that alone should make you the more honourable of us both"
Legolas hadn't considered that, but as he did he found himself comforted by the thought.
Arguably Haldir had a point. Still Legolas wasn't too keen to accept it.
The subject came to a close, but that wasn't the end of it. There was another matter, "Ada wants me to return to Mirkwood earlier, some weeks before the wedding."
Though the words gave Haldir pause and immediately tugged at his heart, he nodded, "Then you must go."
A frown came to Legolas' face, "I do not wish to go alone. You must join me, Haldir. It concerns your brother too, after all."
But Haldir knew the odds were against him; Orophin would want to go too and Haldir knew the Lord Celeborn preferred him in Lothlorien, being the most trusted guardian of the city.
With the attacks of the creatures of the Dark Lord increasing, he doubted he would be allowed to go, "I shall do my best to make it so, melamin."
The words were enough to tell Legolas the chances were slim, but still he had hope, "Perhaps we shall be so lucky this time."
In his heart a greater worry grew; he was heir to the throne. One day, he would have to return to Mirkwood and stay there. Would Haldir choose to remain in Lothlorien? Without him?
Would he come along and leave his duty, his Lord, his realm?
Did he even fit in there?
Mirkwood was far different than Lothlorien, a place of shadow. Though he was a wood elf, they were accustomed to spending time within the palace.
Would Haldir be able to get used to it?
Could he refuse the throne and stay here, instead? Where he wanted to be and felt right at home?
Of course Haldir noticed he was lost in thought, immediately questioning what was amiss.
Legolas forced a light smile, "I was just thinking that I should hate to be parted from you."
It wasn't the whole truth, but for now it simply had to be good enough.
Stop destroying everyone's happiness because you cannot find your own.
The words kept haunting him. Elrohir loathed to admit it, but Orophin was right. He was alone, now more than ever. Elladan had always been there for him, with him. Now his brother was barely there for him to even talk to.
Everywhere he looked, people were in love.
Legolas and Haldir, Orophin and his brother, his grandfather and Saelbeth. Even his own father had found love again -with Glorfindel no less.
He was alone. Who would love him? Be with him?
His heart ached.
Haldir had not been his true love, he had known it too. Elrohir had allowed himself to get caught up in his own fantasies and now, now he could not think of another path to take.
He would be alone, forever. That was to be his fate.
It was a fate that he did not wish to accept. He would sooner die.
That Orophin had pointed that out to him said enough; everyone must be thinking it. Clearly no one believed he could find that happiness.
But why? Did he not deserve to be loved?
A tear rolled down his cheek as he sat down against the tree.
"My lord? Are you alright? "
He knew the voice more than well; Líndir.
His eyes rose up, "It is nothing you need to concern yourself with, Líndir, certainly no one else does."
A brow rose, but even still Líndir knelt down in front of him, "Do you not believe that to be part of the problem, Lord Elrohir?"
