Gimli stood alone in their outer chamber. He had just returned from a noon meal with Legolas' family. They would depart for Erebor early tomorrow morning. Legolas had left with his father after the banquet for a last private conversation. Gimli wanted to give them time alone and he desired to go through the rooms and reminisce.
He looked around the chamber. The floor was polished wood but it was covered almost completely by a thick green rug. Gimli studied the hunting tapestry on the wall to the left of the table: an autumn scene of elves bringing a huge stag into the fortress. The table and chairs were made of a very dark wood. There was a glass vase holding a white flower with a long stem on the table. He and Legolas had often sat at the table and talked. They had played several games here.
Gimli remembered smoking his pipe in this room many times with Legolas' steady stare on him. When Gimli questioned his elf about his scrutiny, Legolas replied "You could put other things into your mouth. I am surely just as warm and relaxing."
Gimli chuckled. "You, my friend, are delightful but I am not sure relaxing is a correct description of you. I think when I smoke whereas you can make it extremely difficult to form a coherent thought. You are indeed like treasure to me, making it impossible to dwell on anything else but the pleasure of it. I certainly could not ponder anything with a mouthful of elf."
Gimli smiled at the memory as he went over to the brown wine cabinet for a cup. He helped himself to one of the big goblets of mottled blue and poured some mead.
When they had first arrived Gimli could reach only the smaller glasses and the plates without straining. They had come back from a walk and found all dining ware shifted to a lower shelf. A wine holder of dark wood that was open and was not higher than Gimli's chin was placed next to the cabinet. The wine bottles were taken from their lofty shelf and slid inside each individual opening.
It had been the day after Gimli had spoken with the King in the library and had asked the Lord for a book that he could not reach. Gimli believed that Legolas' father had instructed the servants to move items where the dwarf could have easy access to them.
Gimli thought back on another good recollection. One of Legolas' numerous nephews came to visit unexpectedly. Luckily, they were eating their noon meal and were completely dressed. Alassell brought a ball. Legolas played with the lad as if he was a child too. Elven laughter filled the room like the pleasant tunes of a flute.
Gimli was finishing up his apple pie and had just got the last bite in his mouth when the toy landed in his plate. Gimli glanced up to first meet mischievous blue eyes and then uncertain ebony ones. He grinned. Picking up the ball, he pretended that he was going to toss it to Legolas and instead threw it to the boy. His reward was more laughter and happiness surrounding him as water shelters an island.
Gimli ran his finger over the rich wood of the table and recalled something else. It was here that Gimli had beheld the newest in Thranduil's line. Celduil and Lastand brought Terean to see Legolas and Gimli. The baby was wrapped in a soft yellow baby blanket. The infant was only a day old and Celduil told Gimli, "He is Tyultaer's brother." as if this explained it well enough for the dwarf to place the newborn. Gimli did know Tyultaer and that she was of Celduil's descent.
Terean was very interesting to Gimli. A dwarf would fear for a baby with so little colour and eyes that continually stared off into the distance. He did not seem to breathe enough in Gimli's estimation, either, but the very tiny hands that occasionally fluttered in the air stated that the lad was well. Terean had such spare hair that when Celduil asserted the child would be blonde, Gimli could not see how this could be determined.
Celduil announced that Terean was the most recent of his descendants. He contemplated the lad fondly, clasped Lastand's hand, and smiling said "For now."
Happily, Gimli took a sip of his drink and went into the inner chamber continuing to call up the past.
The mirror in its golden frame was now aligned with the bed. A very huge bed in Gimli's opinion. The headboard had carved stars at the top and several trees under them. Gimli knew he would be ecstatic to be back here each time they visited. He had come to love that bed and the images associated with it. He had spent many hours under that midnight blue comforter. It had the moon in its phases across the top and bottom. First it showed Ithil when he was only a sliver. The next moon would be a bit more complete progressing on until the final one which was a full moon.
It was not just the thrilling lovemaking that Gimli connected with this bed. There was also the simple joyous comfort of resting close to Legolas each night, sensing his elf's presence even in slumber. The elation of waking with the beloved body snuggled next to him and the scent of his lover along with the often chirpy singing or tender touches were more captivating to Gimli than any gem would ever be.
There were also the many quiet conversations that had taken place in this bed as they lay wrapped in each other's arms. They had traded endearments and confidences.
Gimli's mind brought back the night he had the nightmare. There had been no more bad dreams. He thought of Legolas helping him deal with the guilt he had felt over Merry and Pippin's capture. The event seemed to take new significance as Gimli dwelt on it. Their bond had grown stronger due to Legolas' willingness to brave a discussion that could have proved difficult for both of them.
Gimli's gaze skimmed over the chairs in front of the dresser that were made of light wood. The floor in this chamber was covered with a brown rug that went from one wall to the other. There was a big chest of drawers carved from some great oak against the left wall. They had kept their packs there until yesterday when they had started to prepare to leave.
Gimli sipped some more mead and headed to the innermost chamber. He loved this room with the blue marble floor and the sunken tub. The bathtub was very big. There were wide steps down into it. They had put those stairs to good use. The room had two doors. One led straight into the bed chambers and the other was for the servants and went out into the hall. That door had a bar so they could be assured of seclusion when it was needed.
The fireplace in the room was large and had panels on both sides. The panels displayed the river and the surrounding trees. They showed the bank and water in the summer on one and spring on the other.
The tub had long stands on either side. The buckets, soap container, and the little dish holding shampoo were all white with trees and a brown horse on them.
There was a rectangular mirror on one side of the room. It was set into the wall itself and had no frame. Gimli felt it was not very useful. He could use it easily but it should be positioned for elves and Legolas had to sit on the bench in front of it to see his face. The looking glass did give Gimli a delightful view of Legolas' chest. Gimli recalled asking "Why put the mirror sideways, Legolas? If it were upright you could see yourself entirely."
"It looks better and reflects the fireplace more that way." his elf replied.
Gimli kept the "crazed elves" comments to himself. Mainly because Legolas' fingers were making slow rubs over his nipples and he did not deem it was a good idea to cause Legolas to conclude that his actions were crazed.
Another cherished remembrance came to mind. They had been here only a few days and had been going to bathe. Legolas asked "May I wash your beard, Gimli? I have longed to since Lothlorien."
Gimli answered "You may but don't sound so excited, Legolas. It is not a fun task." Despite his words, his elf's eyes became soft and dreamy.
Legolas was so aroused by the time he was finished washing Gimli's beard that a simple touch from the dwarf brought him to bliss. Gimli did not need more than a caress either. The slender fingers in his beard, the sweet kisses pressed to his face, and the compliments from his elf whispered in a husky voice were enough to keep Gimli erect and close to completion.
Gimli mused on the delectation of that occurrence as he walked over to the brown cabinet next to the mirror. There was a small painting of a white horse adjacent to it. The cabinet had drawers at the bottom and shelves at the top holding extra soap, oil, and towels. The towels were rolled up on one of shelves and adjoined with another board containing brown jugs for holding water.
Gimli sipped some mead and grabbed some of the scented white soap he knew Legolas was fond of. The soaps rested in light blue boxes and Gimli decided to take a container to Erebor.
Legolas had a total of ten bottles of oil in one of his packs and Gimli had made many comments on it including, "Legolas should you fall on..." that objection had been greeted with a glare. Legolas clearly believed that elves did not take sudden falls.
Finally Gimli had asserted "Dwarves do know of the existence of oil, mir nín. You can get some in Erebor."
"Not oil made from the plants of my forest. Besides I am not going to a market and asking any dwarf besides you for oil!"
Gimli got the soap and went to leave. He paused, looking back on another delightful hour. The second night after the ceremony, they went to wash and discovered crushed flower petals in their bath water. Gimli stayed in the doorway for several minutes staring in disbelief. Then he laughed for awhile. He said "I suppose you expect me to cleanse in that or perhaps I'm not allowed to as you are worried it will be dangerous for a dwarf?"
Legolas responded "If you will move out of the doorway, I will go see if I can discern what type of plant has been put in the water."
Gimli chuckled.
Legolas examined the flowers and commented "It's camomile blossoms and is harmless. It is also revenge."
"Revenge?"
"Yes, Celduil and I added flowers to Tasar and Lisse's bath several times after their bonding night."
"So I can expect this again."
"It is a distinct possibility. If you agree to wash..." Legolas' tone became as heated as the blaze in the fireplace, "I promise I'll lick off any petal that is bold enough to touch a dwarf."
Gimli concluded that having flowers in his bath especially bold ones was very entertaining. It amazed him that Legolas could get him to cheerfully participate in actions that only a year ago Gimli would have sworn he would never in his life do.
Sighing with contentment, Gimli went back into the bed chambers and tucked the soap inside a pack. He walked into the study. This chamber elicited many good musings too. He knew he would always cherish their bonding night. They had made love twice on the floor in front of the fireplace before moving to the bed. Legolas had taken him the second time because Gimli felt strongly that it was important that the bond be consummated in every way possible despite their having made love many times since its beginning. The dwarf was certain that he would never forget Legolas' reaction to his feelings.
His elf said as excitedly as someone who is given a gift "In every way possible? There must be a hundred or more methods of making love. We have a few days to try every way!"
Gimli laughed. "I will attempt anything you and I can dream up but I only meant that I wish to have you rest inside me for awhile."
Legolas smiled. "I do not surmise that is exactly what you crave from me but I will give you both the stated and the unspoken desire."
He had done that and more. Gimli's heart would always cherish those days of joy following the bonding ceremony more than it ever would gold. Never would he have imagined the love and the felicity those hours had held. Gladness that made even mithril's value small in comparison.
Gimli's ponderings went to the sweet smell of the twigs burning in the fireplace on their bonding night and how it was in this chamber that he had begun to experience Legolas' feelings through the bond. He closed his eyes briefly and enjoyed the sensation of the heartbeat in his chest that was not his own but belonged to Legolas.
Opening his eyes and having more mead he considered the desk of light wood with carvings of birds along the side. It held a lamp that had a golden stand. The middle of the stand was round and held oil. The lamp was given fuel through a long wick. Gimli remembered sitting in the tan chairs and writing to Gandalf and the hobbits. He also relived the missive to his father.
He analysed the painting above the desk. He liked this art because it was very detailed. It was a meadow scene with trees and mulberry bushes bordering the glade. There was a bee flying by one of the shrubs and a bird nest in one of the trees with baby birds and a parent hovering in the air close by. White, yellow, and blue flowers adorned the ground. Gimli fancied that the field where their bonding ceremony had been performed appeared similar to this in the summer. Plant holders containing ivy were on either side of the painting.
Lamps stood in each corner of the room with slender golden stands that were higher than Gimli was tall. The lamps themselves were round with an ornamental gold top.
On the wall across from the desk was the bookcase and alongside it another painting. This one exhibited a dwelling typical of those many wood elves lived in. The place was surrounded by trees in their winter garb. A dirt path wound up to the building.
Gimli finished the mead. He turned to get more and caught the soft knock at the door.
